DK books for 2011

Posted by ,

DK are going to be busy publishing LEGO books this year by the looks of things. There's a list of Star Wars related books at StarWars.com, including 4 LEGO ones, one of which will be of interest to everyone here: "Star Wars Character Encylopedia" which will feature profiles of 200 minifigures!

There's also LEGO Harry Potter Building the Magical World, and Brickmaster City and Ninjago in the works, too. Clearly their previous collaborations with LEGO have been a success...

Wow, I hope the HP one comes with an exclusive figure. Prof. Sprout, Tonks, Kingsley, Percy, Bill or Charlie maybe??
Why have there been no articles recently, there is news out there , check TBB and EB.

By in United States,

I always see the books in stock, but I guess younger kids in my area buy them since it seems there's close to no AFOLs in my area and thaey must be pretty well stocked too.

Unfortunately these never really appealed to me and I'd rather save my money for actual sets.

^^ What stories do you think we should have covered here, that we didn't?

LegoCoastGuard: I highly doubt Charlie since he hasn't appeared in a movie yet. Probably a special Harry considering Luke.

That's so cool! I actually found out about it first at Star Wars.com then I went here to brickset and found it here too! I can't wait to check those books out! I wonder what the exclusive minifig will be? Cool!

These look awesome. I love the Character encyclopedia and the sticker books. Based on the previous Brickmasters(I have Star Wars and its awesome) the City one will be pretty good.

By in Australia,

I really loved the Atlantis set, so the City one should be good.

I have enjoyed the Minifigure Sticker collection, Standing Small, the Lego Book, and the Star Wars Encyclopedia. I hope these are as good.

Can't wait for the Harry Potter book!!!!!!!!!!!

As much as I enjoy the Star Wars Visual Dictionary, The Lego Book, and Standing Small; I'm beginning to feel like they're going a bit overboard...I'm a little concerned we'll start seeing rehashes of these every 2-3 years. Yes, they haven't had much overlap yet, but I don't want this to turn into the Lego City Police collection.

I'll take a look and see what I think when I see them. I picked up the Atlantis book from them due to my love of that theme and wanting to collect it. I've seen other books for Star Wars, Pirates and Castle that they did. Those weren't bad, but didn't have personal appeal for me as an AFOL.

I saw these listed at Amazon.ca a few days ago... Or at least the Ninjago one being new along with Harry Potter and the Star Wars sticker books. The Character Encyclopedia wasn't listed, and I personally can't wait. The Brickmaster books are high-end caliber LEGO items that look good and add to the display for their Themes.

The Harry Potter book was listed as being the Visual Dictionary though, but that title makes a bit more sense. I too am hopeful that they will include bonus mini-figures with the Harry Potter one and that Character Encyclopedia from Star Wars.

As an AFOL I feel that DK and LEGO have done a great job so far with these books, and I doubt they'll have any problems with repeats. If they want to keep making Brickmaster books there are many other Themes that haven't been touched yet. They have yet to make a Space Themed one and if they're making Ninjago and Atlantis then any new Theme is fair game I'd imagine, even the Disney ones. (Possibly.)

^If they did space ones wouldn't they have to make something similar every year to 3 years?

The LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia looks really cool. Does anybody know if it will include the June 2011 minifigures, like Savage Opress (7957 Dathomir Speeder) and Ki-Adi Mundi (7959 Geonosian Starfighter)?

I hope the exclusive minifigure for the new star wars book is a ceremonial Han Solo to go with Luke!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@lagojango: that would be cool!

Otherwise, I would want an original trilogy yoda figure - the Clone Wars one's eyes are too big :D
Or, either Anakin, Yoda, or old Obi-Wan completly in trans-blue (from the end scene in episode VI when they come back as ghosts)! It would be very collectible as it would be the only minifigure to appear in trans-blue.
Or, Boba Fett with printed arms ad legs: A mixture of the new torso, helmet, cape and jetpack and the old cloud city legs and arms :D

@voyanui8768: Your ideas are good too, but the Ceremonial Luke was made for the book because they wanted to make a minifigure that would probably never be released in a set, so all of your ideas are kinda cancelled out :( but since lego said they will never release a lego Yavin base (or at least one with ceremonial luke) Han seems next in line. The only other figure I see being made is San Hill http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/San_Hill or another Separatist.

The character encyclopaedia sounds promising, as long as it doesn’t end up as just another book filled with big, simplified pictures and inane ‘facts’ that everybody already knows eg: big arrows pointing to lightsabres with a sign saying ‘This is a Lightsabre’ etc..

I’m hoping instead it has some proper, real world info about how they came up with the figures and how they went about designing and moulding them.

I’m probably clutching at straws though…

Huw, I'm pretty sure the stories LCG wants you to cover are the unofficial summer set pictures that everyone has from European catalogs. So I wouldn't worry about that until next month with toy fairs.

If you type in "city brickmaster" on Brickipedia, scroll down till you see City Brickmaster (top one) and click on it. Scroll down to the bottom of the page till you see "source", and click on DK retail catalogue.

@ people who want Ceremonial Han: Considering that Han Solo in that scene was just wearing his ordinary outfit in that scene all cleaned up and spiffy looking I think I'd prefer that this one include Ceremonial Princess Leia first, since at the moment I still don't have a Leia Mini-figure, the unique hair piece for her would be very welcome and also she could include a little Medal Accessory maybe... Although Accessories might not be possible with these books.

@Orange Lemons: LEGO Space Brickmaster wouldn't need to come up with something new every year, instead of sticking it to any one theme I think the Space Brickmaster book should go the Classic Space Era route with simple Models, a Blacktron 2 and Classic Space Man Mini-Figure or possibly a Blacktron 2, Classic Space Man and M-Tron Mini-Figure, making it one of the first Brickmaster books with three Mini-Figures. And that would embody LEGO Space... At least that's LEGO Space to me. But for the kids it might be a tad too outdated. SIGH. Oh well, it's just an idea.

By in United States,

I think it will be Queen Amadala. She has never been released in a set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Odeinoichus: Alright that makes space more reasonable. But if they were to do all the new space themes it would end up being very repetitive with all the new ones that look similar to a degree.

Gravatar
By in United States,

At Starfire@...that would be great if they can have Queen Amadala in her red ceremonial dress with that large, ornate headdress and kabuki-like makeup.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree. She would be a big seller.

By in Philippines,

I was thinking that they would produce another Vader fig so it could be like a father and son thing^^. But then again, we already have more than enough of him... I guess the chromed version would be the best one, or at least in my collection, that is.

Queen Amidala would be a great fig, but I wonder if TLG would be willing to produce one...I remember an article in Time magazine where it said they had to decrease the number of unique parts they produced as part of their streamlinig measures. And look at the Luke minifig: I do believe it's only the prints that are unique.

But hopefully they can make something new. Who knows? They made a new General Grievous minifig, didn't they? And it just looks so much better.

Orthobotrex said "... it said they had to decrease the number of unique parts they produced as part of their streamlinig measures ..."

That was a few years ago, and things have changed. There are a huge number of new parts in the collectable figs, for example. I opened the new Atlantis "Deep Sea Raider" (#7984, aka 'the drill sub') last night, and there are some *great* new parts in that set, as well as a number of older parts in colours they've never been released in before. Good times :-)

I would love for it to be a 'Queen Amidala' figure, which they've been teasing us with since the first LEGO Star Wars sets in 1999 ( look at the logo on the box here - http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=7141-1 )

By in United States,

Yes! A Queen Amidala fig would be SO cool! Especially if they made her face a little nicer looking. You know, smaller lips and nicer looking eyes. The old Padme figure looks evil sorta. Her lips are streched out over her face. :P Really weird. Anyways, yes, that'd be awesome. with the hair piece thing and everything, that'd be cool.
But then again a celebration Leia or Han would be very cool too. You know, a unique torso and hairpeice for Her Royal Highness and a medal for Mr. Scruffy. Just kidding! :)

By in Canada,

I just had a thought, there is one Mini-Figure that I'd bet dollars to donuts LEGO will never make available in a set. Pregnant Padme... What if she's the next unique Mini-Figure? Drat, now I don't know which one I'd prefer, Ceremonial Leia, Pregnant Padme or Queen Padme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^If you want a pregnant Padme, prepare for another sumo.

I would personally expect the character to be a well known one, probably from the original trilogy (Luke [pretty sure it won't be him], Leia, Han [not much more to do for him], Yoda [Probably not], R2-D2 [chrome?], or Ben Kenobi [Probably not]). Though Padme would be nice, I doubt that we'll see her (in this book) if she would have a unique hair piece, face, and torso (unless she is Episode II). I would more expect Leia or R2.

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

Pregnant Padme...Sumo wrestler...Patrick! ^^

Maybe we should look no further than the cover of the book...The area where the minifigure is supposed to be blocks out a lot of C3PO's picture...what if it's gonna be him?! But then again, what could be new about him? New arms?

I still wish that the red background represents royalty!

By in Norway,

The Lukes we haven't seen yet: Tatooine-Luke, with poncho and hat. Cloud City-Luke, battle-damaged. Recovering Luke, from the end of "The Empire Strikes Back". That's it, I don't think they're very likely...(It could be Endor-Luke as well, but it has been done, if not too good)
The only version of Han Solo we've yet to see is the ceremonial one, and let's face it, that would be very lame.
We're missing to versions of Leia: Ceremonial, from "Star Wars" and dressed as the bounty-hunter Boushh. The last one is, in my mind, the most likely one, unless they remake Jabba's Palace, which I hope they'll do!
There are only two possible versions of Chewbacca(unless we count handcuffed) and that's regular Chewbacca and Chewbacca with C-3PO on his back. Then again, the last one could appear if they remake Cloud City, another wish of mine...
Someone mentioned the possibility of "force-ghosts", that's a good idea! I don't think they'll make a set called "Ewok Celebration" or a "Luke's Snowstorm Encounter", so that's a good guess at what the figure could be... And it's going to be Obi-Wan, not Yoda or Anakin(or Palpatine, for those who whatches "Robot Chicken").
Queen Amidala is a good guess, but I think(and hope) they're going to stick with the Original Trilogy.
They could bring back Greedo or Lobot, but they're minor charachters, so I'm not to sure...
What no-one has mentioned(I think) is this: What if it's Episode III-Anakin, we haven't seen a figure of him without "hands-free" or with a glowing lightsabre permanently attached to his arm. On this field there's actually a lot of potential, we've never seen a normal version of Palpatine(pre-lightning) or any of the Episode II characters, flesh-coloured.

By in United States,

Yes... Pregnant Padme would be cool....but you're right, they'll probably stick with the original trilogy. SapmiSatan, you forgot one Leia: the endor Leia where she's dressed in the dress the ewoks made for her. It'd be cool if that was the exclusive minifigure, don't you all think? I think so. :) But, a ghost minifig would be awesome too. Maybe a Ben Kenobi!
Yes, a ceremonial Han would be kinda lame. Even though Han's one of my fav characters, there's only so much Lego can do with him since he wears pretty much the same type of clothes all the time. Shirt...vest...pants....vest...pants....coat...blah, blah.
So I'm thinkin' it's going to be either a Luke or Leia. But Luke was the last exclusive minifig so I think they'll do something different. Who knows?
Can't wait till the book comes out! :D
