Space: the final frontier

Posted by ,

This week's minifig gallery is post-Classic Space, featuring all minifigs from regular LEGO Space sets from 1987 to 1998.

I don't have any classic space minifigs, at least not in mint condition, which is why I haven't included them. I will add Space Police 3 once I have all the figs, but I won't be adding the 'our solar system' themes like Life on Mars and Mars Mission or the Space Skulls/Star Justice which featured stickered torsoes and didn't appeal to me.

Update: The next gallery is ready and I'll be uploading it tomorrow. It's one of my favourite themes of recent years. Check back tomorrow to find out what it is!

By in United Kingdom,

Make sure to add the new Alien Conquest theme when it's released huw.

By in Italy,

Great Job! (Again!) We're just getting closer to the Star Wars theme! Do you have all the minifigs, Huw?

By in United Kingdom,

^ I have all from 1999 to the colour change in 2004, except Boba Fett from Cloud City, and I have all from 2008 onwards. I probably have 3/4 of those from 2004-2007 as well. However I'm involved in another project which makes adding the images here until that's completed slightly complicated. More will be revealed later in the year...

YEAH MY FAV SERIES!

By in United States,

Just one thing- under Ice Planet, you have one figure listed as Blonde guy. I came accross Blonde in the dictionary last year and it had two spellings: Blonde is female, and Blond is male. Therefore, he should be Blond Guy with not e.

By in Norway,

I only own one of these figures, the first of the green insectoides. I hadn't added that set to my collection, but now I have. Thanks Huw.

By in Germany,

Great job! Btw: Why won't you add the Life On Mars, Mars Mission and Space Skulls/Star Justice themes in this gallery?

By in United States,

Great work! Really nice seeing some of my favorite guys in such detail. Sure brings back a ton of memories!

By in United States,

Since you seem kind of drawn back by the stickered torsos, just to let you know a couple of the racers sets a long time ago had them too.

By in United States,

Great galleries! I own 2 M-tron guys, a B-tron guy, a Space Police 2 guy, 2 Ice Planet guys, Spyrius, Droid, and a UFO dude. They were some of the first minifigures I ever got, so thank you for bringing back the memories!

By in United States,

I like your collection. It is very interesting. The only lego space set I own would be Mars Mission set Crystl Digger. It wasn't a very big set although it does give some exelent parts for a spaceship. It is really said though that Mars Mission ended. One of my freinds was teriffied when I gave him the news. For him it was the loss of his life. He nearly owned all of the sets exept a few of the smaller ones. If anyone would like to talk to me look me up at lego.com on the messageboards. My charecter name, captains1117.

Mainly because I don't have all the figs and have no intention of getting them.

By in Russian Federation,

Thanks a lot!!! Space is my favourite theme. And now I'm working on the article about Lego Space at our local Russian forum, so these excellent new images are very useful for it.

By in United States,

I was lucky enough to get a lot of the classic space figs from garage sales/thrift stores. Good luck finding ones to add to the gallery!

By in Poland,

Very good pictures! Now we will wait fot The Classic Space minifigrues before 1986, and the new ones. (Life On Mars, Mars Mission, Space Police III) :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awesome! I really like the Blacktron 1 and the Futuron.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not sure I understand why Mars Mission is being excluded. They're definitely "regular LEGO Space" sets! The figs have classic space logos on them! Now Life on Mars and Space Skulls/Star Justice I can understand ;-).

By in United States,

Next, can you do Star Wars or Castle 2007 (include the giant trolls).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh, and please do Mars Mission and Space Police 2009.

Wonderful Work Huw. I never got into the Space theme as I never was too interested with it. What ever happened to the Western gallery by the way?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sigh. This was during my dark years ... I don't have any those cool minifigs. Thanks for the great gallery!

Thanks for the great work & gallery!

The next one is Exo-Force isn't it? I honestly hated the theme. . . no offense!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Good guess but you'll have to wait and see :-)

By in United Kingdom,

Huw, let me have a dig around and I'll see if I can sort out the missing figs to lend you. An incomplete Space gallery makes me sad...

By in United States,

This gallery is great to see, especially after I just recently hunted down and rebuilt all of my Classic Space, Post-Classic Space, Blacktron I, Space Police I, and M-Tron minifigures. You're quite lucky to have so many in such excellent condition. Most of mine are showing some wear on their torso prints. Overall, I probably have all of those with just a few exceptions in the Explorians and Insectoids themes.

By in United States,

This post made me sad. Why did you call Space Skulls/Star Justice atrocious? Granted, I'm not much of a fan of Space Skulls; it is a little too fantastical for my taste, but Star Justice was a neat little set. Sure they had sticker torsos, but that was not a first for LEGO. Moreover, it was a compromise. From an interview with Chris Giddens:

"Printing parts is expensive. If you print a part that’s going only in one line of sets, you can’t spread that cost out because of it’s limited production. We hope the space sets sell a buhjillion copies… but factory sets usually are limited runs. We had the choice of either blank torsos or do stickers. Stickers were the best option. We talked to LEGO about these issues and they agreed that stickers were the way to go. We would use stickers IF: A) we could make them B) They would be on transparent film so they could be used in other applications other than our sets C) we get enough color to make them look cool and D) they would be a part available somehow on LDD or factory so kids who can’t afford our set can still get in on the action by building a small LDD ship and adding stickers. LEGO talked internally about this for a while and made it happen."

@Legoloverman, that would be great, thanks!

@Brickmatic, maybe I was bit harsh, but they didn't appeal to me.

Hypothetically speaking, if someone were to take high-quality pictures of LEGOLAND Space, Life on Mars, Star Justice, Space Skulls, and Mars Mission minifigs, would you be willing to add them to this gallery?

Looking at the original Space gallery that used images from BrickLink, I can see that even from the themes included, there are a few variations that are missing. For example, a couple oddball Futuron guys from Dacta. Will you be adding these to the gallery (most of them can easily be recreated using the Minifigs already in this gallery, so even if you don't have the originals, you could easily recreate them).

Also, if you want to identify the named Minifigs...
- Ice Planet Chief is named "Commander Cold"
- Explorien Astronaut 2 is named "Nova Hunter" (based upon LEGO Mania Magazine)
- Explorien Chief is named "Nova Hunter" (based upon LEGO Racers)
- Explorien Droid is named "Ann Droid"
- RoboForce Yellow is named "Chip Nebula"
- U.F.O. Alien 2 is named "Alpha Draconis" (LEGO Mania Magazine) / "Alpha Dragonis" (LEGO Racers)
- U.F.O. Droid 2 is named "Andy Droid"
- Insectoids Female is named "Gypsy Moth"
Most of these cite either LEGO Mania Magazine or LEGO Racers. The only disputed ones are Nova Hunter (which is applied to two different characters) and Draconis/Dragonis (with different spellings), but I'd probably follow the LEGO Mania's versions because they came first.

By in Australia,

I'm going to take a wild guess that the next gallery will be Fantasy Era Castle.

Yes, definitely.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I wonder what the next theme is... Honestly I have no idea... It's coming out today! Yay!

Gravatar
By in Norway,

@Huw. You are aware of the fact that some of the earliset versions of classic space had stickered torsoes? I have 1 white and 2 red with stickers.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Uh, Huw, there are also the Space brick-built droids! Will you be doing them?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw, Wow, you changed the text of the post! That was very nice of you to do. I mean, in addition to all the nice things you already do like post galleries of minifigs in the first place.

I see you're open to the idea of including pictures of minifigs taken by others. Your goal with this collection was a standardized look, so perhaps you might be able to put together a description of your process for taking photos? That way, others can follow the steps you take and get the same look as your photos. I would definitely enjoy taking photos for any of these minifig galleries. Just a thought.
