Western minifig gallery

Posted by ,

While you've all been drooling over unreleased sets, I've been slaving away over a hot keyboard to bring you the latest minifig gallery, which this time is the minifigs from the Western theme that was released in 1996 and 1997 (or Wild West as it was called in North America).

It was a great theme, and one which surely there is perpetual demand for: 'Cowboys and Indians' is always a popular game...

cool I love the western theme

By in United States,

This is the one theme that I truly wish I had all the sets for. It is amazing how closely some of these sets resembled early playmobil sets of the same theme - and I am not complaining!

By in United States,

I do love it, for my birthday last year I got 6716, 6755, 6761, 6765, 6766, and 6769 in MINT condition. Sorry, a bit off-topic. :(
But great job anyways on all these galleries, Huw!

By in United States,

I want the western theme back! It was one of the best...

By in Norway,

I only had two sets in this theme, the Indian Chief(in the picture above) with a horse and the last bandit with a small cannon of sorts... I really wish they would re-launch the Western theme, only this time: Spaghetti Western! I loved the cowboy and Mexican in the collectable series and would love to see more. If they re-launch Western I might buy something that's not a licensed theme...

By in Ireland,

Excellent job on the minifigure photos as always Huw! Can't wait for the next gallery :)!

By in United States,

Thank you so much Huw! Without a doubt, Western is one of my most favorite themes. I will always regret passing the majority of these sets up. While a great theme, it was a bit controversial. Lego did a good job of skirting around the "killing all the Natives" issue by not including soldiers and Native Americans in the same sets. The theme also went against Lego's no gun policy big time. Fort Legoredo had around 20 rifles and pistols in total. I don't really see Lego bringing back this theme anytime soon; however I would love to see its return and I think it would sell quite well.

By in United States,

Anyone else weirded out by the fact that the Native American figures have noses?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now THAT is ironic. I just discovered the western theme on another site and came here to find out more about it and its figures. Thanks a ton!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks Huw

By in United Kingdom,

The face designs on the indians and bandits are kind of weird... always strange when they give minifigs noses...
@Farmer_John That's not irony.

By in United States,

I love the new minifig galleries!

I do have a suggestion, however. Would it be possible to add "Want" or "Own" (loose) checkboxes next to or beneath the photos (like on the regular set images). I think this would be a bit more user-friendly, as some users may want to look through these highly detailed photos of all the figures for a particular theme to pick out which minifigs they "own" or "want."

This would expedite the process of adding minifigs to the "own" or "want" list, making it like adding sets to the "own" or "want" lists when browsing sets by theme or year. Alternately, the pictures in the minifig galleries could link to the individual minifig pages.

On a different topic: For the "Harry Potter" minifig browser, the 2005 Death Eater should probably be listed as Lucius Malfoy, since the fig is not necessarily a generic Death Eater.

Suggestions for future galleries: Agents, Alpha Team, Castle, Life on Mars, Mars Mission

Of course, these are not demands, but simply suggestions. Keep up the great work!

By in United States,

You should do this for the Collectable Minifigures!

Cool again! Nice job!

By in Sweden,

I love these professional looking minifig galleries. Keep up the good work!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great work again Huw. Having come back to lego fairly recently, I was aware of the Western sets but never paid much attention to them. The Cavalry figures are great, but the eyes of the Natives look really odd.

BTW - does any know if the S3 minifig Tribal Chief has the same head dress re-coloured, or is it a different piece ? And I agree, you should do a Collectable Minifigs gallery soon, both holding their accessories and with the accessories on the side.

More please !

By in Belgium,

Nice gallery again Huw.

I just ordered a batch of Western and Adventurers (waiting for their gallery!!) minifigs last week. Seeing those new pics I am even more anxiously waiting for them to arrive..
(pitty those sets date from before my kids and SW lured me back into Lego)

Maybe a bit off-topic but: could you or one of your "partners in crime" do an article once on the process of taking those pictures? Without going to much into technical details: some guidelines about lighting, getting them in focus (which seems to be a problem for many, seeing the amount of blurry pics of those little critters all over the web), post processing steps that eventually are needed...

I am not sure if Brickset is the right spot to publish this, but I guess it could be usefull to a lot of AFOLs who aren't all (semi) professional or experienced hobby photographers but who nevertheless would like to take some nice pictures of their LEGOs

By in United States,

^ That's a great idea! I'll give it some thought...

By in Japan,

This is brilliant. I love this series, I think I have them all, but they have been put away in boxes for a long time. The Native American costumes were particularly well designed, great detail & color. I think I know what I'll be doing on my 3 day weekend. ( I rebuilt the Ninja seres last time.)
Great photos. Thanks Huw.

'While you've all been drooling over unreleased sets'-LOL :D
And great gallery Huw! Again you have failed to disappoint!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Interesting, the only Cowboy set I don't have is the best and biggest, Fort Legorado. Yet, I seem to have all the non-Indian minifigures...does the Fort not come with any exclusive figures?

Gravatar
By in United States,

A bit off the topic, but I would love a new western theme.

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

I miss the 90's LEGO sets... Particularly the Pirates and Islanders theme... And Fright Knights too. =D
Sir Huw, I think those two I've mentioned should be the next batch of minifigs to be included in your galleries. =D

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

The biggest Western set that I got was the "Main Street"... The bank and the gun shop were awesome! =D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Huw you think that you were bored I had to run 1 and a half miles. It was tough

By in United States,

@mission_zed - I took photos comparing the Collectible Series Cowboys & Indians:

Series 1 Cowboy vs. Western Cowboys - http://www.flickr.com/photos/wiredforsound23/5277758133/
Series 1 Tribal Hunter vs. Western Indians - http://www.flickr.com/photos/wiredforsound23/5258089563/
Series 2 Tribal Chief vs. Western Indians - http://www.flickr.com/photos/wiredforsound23/5258698532/

I just rebuilt my Fort Legorado & Rapid River Village just the other day, so I am happy to see these more accurate photos to see where I have mismatched torso, legs and heads across my various Western Sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ Huw - I'll have you know that I have only been drooling over currently available sets. That being said, I do hope we someday return to the Western theme as these are the jewel of my collection. Yet somehow, I never picked up the Fort, even when it was rereleased a few years later. I'm a moron.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@yellowcastle - you have plenty of company! I too kick myself for the sets I told myself I didn't need, and now go for tons of money on Bricklink/Ebay.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ All - Please note that any off topic and/or offensive comments will continue to be deleted. Let's keep it civil, please.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

nice. I thinkl you should do adventures defently my favorite theme of the 90s. Ah the 90s...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great gallery! I'm not going to burden you with suggestions to do 'this' theme or 'that.' Just keep turning out whatever YOU want to release, with whatever figs you got. These galleries rock!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I just wanted to express my appreciation for all the hard work you are putting into these new, gorgeous galleries. It certainly gives one more reason to check into Brickset on a daily basis. Keep up the good work! If I may put in my two cents, I'd vote for the Monsters from the old Studios sets to get their glory.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pirates next, perhaps? ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank you all for your comments. The main criteria for a theme to get its own gallery is, of course, that I need to have all the minifigs to photograph. I certainly don't have every one ever made.

Themes that will be covered in the near future:

- Speed Racer
- Avatar
- SpongeBob
- Adventurers
- Collectable minifigs

Themes that will be covered eventually:

- Star Wars
- Fantasy era castle
- Agents
- Atlantis

Themes that won't ever be included, unless someone else photographs them:

- Pirates
- City/Town, apart possibly from certain distinct subthemes, e.g. Divers
- Castle (except fantasy era)
- Sports

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Huw: Because you don't own all of the Star Wars minifigs, if you have them all out of one episode, you could split the minifigure galleries into episodes:

e.g If you own all of the Episode 5 and Clone Wars minifigures, they could be two seperate galleries while the other episodes can use Bricklink images for the time being.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Do Collectable Minifigs!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Here's a silly question. How are you going to keep track of figures from new sets you need to photograph and add to the collections? :o)

Gravatar
By in United States,

As you mentioned for City, perhaps you could do a subset of other themes; for example, photos of the various soldiers in the original pirates them wouldn't involve more than 13 or 14 figures, and Islanders would probably be manageable. The same could apply to castle - a small subtheme such as Knight's Kingdom 1 and Kingdoms.

Gravatar
By in Israel,

Awesome! FYI you forgot to add it to the bar on the right. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well, I haven't been drooling over any sets... Ok, maybe I did on that new Falcon... Did anyone else notice Han solo has OldBlue pants?

Very nice work on the Photos. I second the motion for some sort of photo tutorial ^^.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey Huw: Could you possibly do Agents next? Thanks! It's one of my favorite themes... Right behind HP!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey Huw, again! Once you cover Spongebob, I think it'll be safe to remove the shoddy Bricklink images listed below for the licensed themes line at least. Oh, and is there ever going to be a chance that these images will replace the Bricklink ones in the normal sets/my figs sections?

Gravatar

Huw, when you say you can't do Pirates, do you possibly have the ability to do Pirates II? If not, I hope some one is able to do this series.

Gravatar
By in United States,

> Oh, and is there ever going to be a chance that these images will replace the Bricklink ones in the normal sets/my figs sections?

They do already.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

wow! great job! FANTASTIC!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw-You could do STAR WARS episode II can't you? I think you said that you have all of the STAR WARS figures from that era except for the Cloud City Boba Fett. . .

. . . I think I pay attention a little too much. That's how I figured out Exo-Force. . . .

UPDATE: I just checked and he has everything except for the original half-fire droid which included no minifigures anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Keep up the great work I love the new Minifig Galleries!

Gravatar
By in United States,

How I would love a new Western theme...

Gravatar
By in United States,

When are you doing the next Minifigure Gallery? Do SpongeBob SquarePants!
