New York Toy Fair photos

Posted by ,

Ace at fbtb has been busy uploading hundreds of well-organised pictures to the fbtb flickr stream. He's photographed every last detail and you should be able to determine all the things I couldn't remember at the London toy fair, including the identities of the Harry Potter minifigs in the Forbidden Forest, Knight Bus and Battle for Hogwarts. When you've done so, please list them here.

Wow... if this is true with regards to pricing, this is awesome. For Forbidden Forest, you have 4 figures (and not just any minifigures) for $11.99... this will be a hit. Could not wait for it to come out, hope the pricing is true.

Wow... Once again Minifigs to the rescue in these sets....
In the Knight Bus we get Stan Shunpike (conductor), Ernie Prang (driver), Harry and the Shrunken Head
In the Forbidden Forest (as predicted by some) Voldemort (new face maybe?) Narcissa Black, Hagrid and Harry
Battle for Hogwarts we have Professor Sprout, Remus Lupin, Harry, Neville Longbottom, Dementor and Lucius Malfoy........

I have to say all 3 of these sets are disappointing - while the Knight Bus is much better than the original, I'm more disappointed by the choice of set, not the set itself. What was wrong with Bill & Fleur's Shell Cottage; or one of the many hiding/camping spots - like the frozen lake with the Silver Doe.

The Forbidden Forest has almost a direct replica of the tree from the original Forbidden Forest set with Aragog (Chamber of Secrets). Other than that, you get some minifigs and an obvious minifig flipper.....

The Battle for Hogwarts is saved by the minifgures, as the towers don't add much new (except for some new Portrait stickers, a new Globe and new blackboard), and the *tiny* Viaduct leaves much to be desired.

Then again, the Pirates of the Caribbean sets look superb, (love all the Minifgures - especially the new mermaids!), Alien Conquest looks OK (loving those ugly aliens), but the Kingdoms sets are the real jewels of this collection.

The Star Wars sets have been heckled to death already, but I still can't wait for some interior shots of the Millennium Falcon!

Having just got the original Knight bus i'd say the better of the two is the original, better minifigs in the new one but overall old one looks best. Having said that will be buying the new one as well.

Birgoyle i think that instead of Narcissa Black it is actually Bellatrix Lestrange in the Forbidden Forest set

My highly anticipated City Harbor theme is a disappointment. I was hoping for a more in-depth update to the previous harbor - not a dumbing down of it. While the other sets are ok, they lack the pizazz of last year's sets. That said, they will probably still find their way to my home... I just won't be the first one in line to get them.

Thanks for posting the link, I appreciate it.

By in United States,

Let's see what do I remember. . . .

Well, I am definitly getting the Battle for Hogwarts. What I can make out is, improved Atronomy Tower w/ DA hiding place (Room of Requirment", some random table w/ crystal ball. The other tower seems to have "The Room of Missing Things" (which is in the room of requirement), a couple of poraits (put your own Ravenclaw tower in there!), and a new Mirror of Erised.

I'll also get the Forrbidden Forest and add the tree behind Hagrid's Hut, and I doubt Voldemort will have a new face. Anybody else notice that on the box Harry is wearing his jacket, but at the Toy Fair he has his robes on? Also, Voldemort and Narcissa are holding each other's wands.

I will most likely get the Knight Bus (eventuall), but not because I want too, just because I missed out on the original and I am making an attempt to collect all of the 2010-2011 Harry Potter sets.

On top of that, I think I'll pick up the Marina and get the Temple of Atlantis and Lighthouse Island on a later date.

Does anybody think it's weird that the Lighthouse has non-brickbuilt fish?

By in Australia,

Overall, some great pics and a job well done from the fbtb website. This has certainly helped in determining which sets to get and which to pass on.

My biggest disappointment would have to be the HP sets. Both Forbidden Forest and Knight bus aren't anything to get excited about - in fact, the Knight bus is rather ugly and appears quite elementary in it's design, and I don't think I can justify the price just to pick up the minifigures. So both I'll pass on. I feel TLG has really missed an opportunity with this theme - they're so many other sets that they could have done - The Ministry of Magic, Shell Cottage, 4 Privet Drive, The Lovegood Home and the one that I would have most like to have seen, Malfoy Manor. Oh well, there's always next year......

I also had the Queen Anne's Revenge set down as a must have, but after seeing pictures from front on, I'm not too impressed. There doesn't seem to be an enclosed cabin with a door on this set, which I find kind of odd for a pirate ship. Certainly, in comparison to the Imperial Flagship from last year, it pales in comparison. Will probably therefore only pick this up if there's a major sale one (at least 33% off) - if not, I think I'm content to pass. Hopefully, the Black Pearl will not disappoint.

Having said all this, I'm very impressed with the Fire Temple from the Ninjago theme, as well as the Kingdom sets. The Star Wars ones were pretty much what I expected, so no surprises there although it was good to see inside the Millennium Falcon and the Republic Frigate. The prices overall though are a bit of a shock to the system - the U.S. prices are already quite high, which means that we're going to get majorly ripped off here in Australia.

The Forbidden Forest is not made up of trees after all, but "A" tree! Might have been fashioned out of the ewok attack set. LOL

By in United States,

I don't like Harry Potter, so I'm indifferent to the sets. City and Hero Factory also doesn't interest me very much, but I do follow the City sets because my little brothers and sisters love the theme. Also, the Cars sets look nice, but I don't really care for them. However, what I do have a big opinion on is the Star Wars sets.

The Star Wars sets are pretty dissapointing. The Dathomir Speeder is ugly, the Sith Infiltrator has been remade to death, the Republic Cruiser looks fragile, the Geonosian Fighter is not movie-accurate, and the interior for the Millenium Falcon, the set I had such high hopes for, is emptier than my wallet. Surprisingly, the Pdracers look pretty good, and they actually have a very accurate look to them. The Ewok Attack set is also pretty good, though the price is a bit steep. The minifigures for all the sets are decent, though I would rather have some older figures in the sets to at least bring the prices down.

The Alien conquest sets are meh. While I like the whole retro-1990s Space thingy, the sets are simply constructed and just don't cut it for me. However, the Alien figs are nice, and that Alien guy you can put on people's heads is interesting. Besides that, I'm not to thrilled with the sets.

BUT! The Pirates of the Carribean sets are very cool! I'm liking the look of the minifigures and the main ship looks sweet. I can't wait for these sets!

It looks as if the Battle for Hogwarts set has...classrooms. Thank goodness, I need some of those for my castle right now. Thank you FBTB!

By in United States,

I'm loving the Queen Anne (PotC). I think it's stunning. Love the use of skulls and skeletons for decorations. That was the only PotC set on my radar (aside from the Black Pearl), but London Escape is tempting, too. I love the horse and buggy. Aside from that, my only other interests were the SW sets and the Alien Conquest ones, but I find the Alien Conquest sets disappointing and simplistic, so I'll be skipping them.

To echo PaulTR, the Star Wars sets are also disappointing. The Millennium Falcon looks awkward, the Nightspeeder is lame, the Frigate looks too similar to the Republic Cruiser, the Infiltrator was just done a couple years ago, and of course they're all way, way over-priced, even more than usual. The Podrace however, looks really good and is even reasonably priced, and the Ewok Attack looks decent as well, but of course that's way over-priced, too. Very disappointing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wonder why the Black Pearl is still under wraps? It's due out among the soonest of the "Summer" sets (May) and we still haven't seen it...wonder if they are still working on it?

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

Narcissa Malfoy (the two-toned haired woman), Remus Lupin (in beige / flesh outfit), Professor Sprout (in tan dress), Neville Longbottom (boy in casual outfit), Lucius Malfoy, Dementor, and Lord Voldemort... Oh and there's a random Slytherin kid too... Maybe Vincent Crabbe / Gregory Goyle / Blaise Sabini. Whoever among those three. Ernie Prang and Stan Shunpike are also present. And of course there's a Harry Potter and a Hagrid minifig as well. And did I see a Draco Malfoy figure too? Or was that just one of those preliminary box images? Anyway... I think the Battle for Hogwarts set looked a bit better. I'm going to save up for it. At least, I'll have some cool towers and accessories. Not as bad as I thought it would be. There's also a Mirror of Erised in the top-most part of the left tower. And some Gryffindor beds too! =D

I'd also like to get the Forbidden Forest set; just for the figures... =D

The Knight Bus? Uhm... Forget about that... The first version was loads better. Good thing I was able to get it. =)

*sigh* ___________________________________________ Accio July 2011! =)

By in United States,

I think Luke Skywalker from 7965 looks like a kid. The new hair piece he comes with looks good, though.
The ewoks from 7956 look very good. They are more realistic and interesting than the previous ewoks.

The Castle/Kingdoms sets look interesting. They are coming out with a realistic goat and a new pig with spots in 7189. The chickens are okay, but I like the goats more than the chickens. They should make a lego fox.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Incredible job by 'Ace' on all those thorough photos and videos. Really helped me with some of the Star Wars sets I was skectible about. Some of them are growing on me.

Love the Queen Anne. All those skulls as details and the rich red for the sails makes this a nice looking play and display model.

I'm diggin' the Alien Conquest line. I love some of those play features. I don't care for the blue for the Earth vehicles though. I'm gonna' swap them out as best I can with black bricks.

Overall...even though I'm not a PotC fan, their models and designs seem to be the best of themes overall this year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Anak...yep, looks like you can get some nice figs without buying the expensive sets. Not sure the retail on the watches ($20 usd I think?).... but it's great for your kids to have a fun watch and get a couple of hard to get figs.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ever since I heard about the knight bus being re-released, I wanted to get it. But after seeing the pictures of it, straight away, I realized how terrible the re-released knight bus is :-(

Anyway, on a more positive note, the Forbidden Forest has that new mushroom piece, a tree (always handy) and some good minifigs while the Battle For Hogwarts has a new blackboard, globe, mirror, minifigures, etc.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Alien Conquest theme has so much B-movie cheese that I cannot possibly pass up on it, even though I haven't bought a themed "system" set in several years.
Nice to see the Bucket Truck, but couldn't they have shown us more Technic than that?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Harbor set looks awesome, and 90 USD is not too bad.
I will not speak of the SW sets....
The marina looks like an old Lego JR product where the Lego group phoned it in for a few years...
I will be focusing on the Harbor set, launch pad set, shuttle, Maersk train set... Maybe the Knight bus (for the purple parts) and Diagon Alley.. As much as I like Pirates line I dunno how much I want to invest into it.. Maybe the Queen Anne's Revenge.
The light house looks sweet!

Nice for Lego to finally realize you need a collectors case with 16 spots, not 15... (ok ok 8, but put two together..) I also like the tacklebox for parts that is neat too.
So some neat things from Lego, but I am staying away from Lego SW, unless places have big discount sales on them....

By in United Kingdom,

Well, I love the Alien Conquest line I hope to buy all but two (the most pricey ones). I will say this to HP fans who hate the new Night Bus, but love the old one, why not buy the new one, and use the instructions for the old one? If you are missing pieces then you can buy them of Lego or Bricklink.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^He's got a point, and as far as I can tell, it isn't THAT different, you are all just used to better renditions.^

UPDATE: I know it will probably change, but on the picture for the Knight Bus box, Harry seems to have his older casual torso and a new hair piece. IT IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE HOWEVER!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love the Ninjago sets but why isn't there pics of Lightning Dragon Battle. Oh one last thing are these still prelims or will they stay the same?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oops, thanks for pointing that out bluemoose! That would explain it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@JonnyRonny - Probably a mixture, some will change a little, some won't change at all. If you look carefully there are a few examples where there are differences between the built sets & the box art.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks much! Here is a disection of the sets, Huw:

Battle for Hogwarts:
Minifigs: Harry Potter; Order of the Phoenix member/ex-Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and werewolf Remus Lupin (the red-haired man in the suit); Death Eater and father to Draco, Lucius Malfoy; a Dementor; dundering classmate of Harry's Neville Longbottom; Herbology teacher Professor Pomona Sprout; and Slytherin student/Malfoy cronie Gregory Goyle.

First tower: basement has a skull. Second floor is a corridor (evidently for a small battle) with portraits. Third floor is a teacher's study (I'd use it as McGonagall's.) Fourth floor is the Mirror of Erised from the first book/film.

Viaduct: Seen in numerous movies, has a play feature with flames.

Second tower: Basement has nothing. Second floor is the Room of Requirement when Neville and Dumbledore's Army camp out there for the events of the final book and it makes the shape of a dormitory. Third floor is Astronomy Tower, film-accurate, where Dumbledore's death took place. Fourth floor is the Divination tower with a crystal ball and two "teacups" (though these are just mugs.) Professor Trelawney is mysteriously absent from the proceedings.

The Forbidden Forest:
Minifigs: Harry; Lord Voldemort; Rubeus Hagrid; and Narcissa Malfoy (woman with multicolored hair which is NOT incorrect and NOT Bellatrix), mother of Draco and wife to Lucius.

The Rest: Tree area with some mushrooms and a figure-flick play feature.

The Knight Bus:
Minifigs: Harry; purple-suited conductor Stan Shunpike; bespectacled driver Ernie Prang; and the Shrunken Head.

The Bus: the second floor has what looks like a chandelier, and more seating is included on all three floors.

The Accessories: Hedwig the owl and Harry's trunk is included.

By in United States,

I'm definitely gonna have to pick up some Alien Conquest and kingdoms, I don't think I'll have enough money left after that for any City or pirates. :(

Gravatar
By in Spain,

My thoughts of the 2011 line up is

The Star Wars sets look pretty , The Pod racer set , ewok attack and Falcon are a must for me and the frigate , speeder and infiltrater look ok too.

Pirates of the Carribean looks all but awesome and I am definately going to buy most if not all the sets.

Alien conquest looks ok but will probably only buy the smaller sets for figures sake.

Ninja go , The Fortress looks interestign but thats about it.

Harry Potter has some really exiting sets I really want the dark forest and the battle of hogwarts. Eventhough the new Knight bus looks better than the old one I probably wont buy it as I have the old one.

Creator this year is fantastic and the light house and hillside house are defintately sets I would consider.

Cars is alright but I am not interested in it and may just buy the mini individual car fig sets.

City looks like a total disapointment, the marina and harbour do nothing for me but I may just buy the fishing boat and speed boat to go with my coastguard display.

Kingdoms is as good as always .

Gravatar
By in United States,

can't wait!!!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

WHAT!!! Why is the Republic Frigate so much more expensive in Canada, our money isn't THAT far below the U.S.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow! There are are too many awesome new well-designed models, minifigs, and parts coming out this year. It's getting even harder to pick and choose what is best to buy and what I really want. The videos help a lot. Thanks Ace at fbtb!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The new infiltrator is a bitter let-down. Even if the price were not so high it wouldn't be worth the purchase to me. The front of the craft is a literal plank which swings up to reveal a pathetically concealed frame. This one is sure to haunt me for years because I'll be forced to pass up the opportunity to buy a decent darth maul minifig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I totally agree. A ridiculous price and some poor elements are pitilessly juxtaposed by Lego with grade-A minifigures, parts, and a richly detailed back cockpit. There are so many good elements of this set, it's hard to pass up.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Two goats, three chickens, and a spotted pig in 7189 Mill Village Raid. Not too many castle sets, but I think they are all worth the respective prices.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll definitely be getting all three of the new Harry Potter sets. My dream of a non-sticker/printing on windshield shrunken head for the new Knight Bus set has been fulfilled. Now if only he had a real name, lol. The interior of the Battle for Hogwarts is slightly disappointing, but seeing as these are probably incomplete models on display, I'll be surprised if there doesn't turn out to be additional details for the production sets. Anybody know if they are re-releasing any of last years sets along with these? I would love to have a second chance to buy the castle set. Especially since this new one attaches to it.

The PotC sets look nice. Not exactly sure I'll get any of them. I really like that new hair piece they're using for Will. I would love to get a hold of a copy of it for a custom Lego minifigure I'd like to make. However none of the sets he's in interest me all that much, tbh. Might have to see if I can find someone willing to sell it to me, lol.

Some of the Star Wars sets are nice. Though I have to say, I would be vastly more interested in the Ewok set if it was the size of a Battle Pack. I would love to get that new Darth Maul minifig, but like Will Turner and his hair, the set he comes in just doesn't interest me THAT much. Hopefully they'll release him in a cheaper set at some point ("Lightsaber Duel" remake anybody?).

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Most of the Cars sets look good but I must say that Acer, Grem and Holley haven't been done very well. Luigi and Guido look great so I definitely be picking up 8206 but I'm passing on 8638. Anyone know who the other car is? (from left: Acer, Grem, Mater, Holley and Blue/White Car). Who is the blue/white car?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ok, I'm all about City...

A couple things...

Pricing: Seems way too good to be true! But lets hope it is.

4645 Harbor: I'm disappointed that this set does not use raised deck plates and, is Lego printing a new shipping company? But of course, I'll buy it.. it's perfect with a train of hopper cars.

4643 Power Boat Transporter: Something I won't buy, minifigs are very simple and I feel like they're taking a less creative approach on the design of their vehicles. I've noticed that in the new Polices sets as well, I think the trucks from a couple years ago look a lot better.

4644 Marina: Thanks for all the pictures, because this set is a lot cooler when you can get a good look at. It's a really nice attempt at a beach building.

5770 Lighthouse Island: Love it. Done.

The Alien Conquest is an awesome side theme if you're a city connoisseur, I'm really excited for these.

My beefs: Lego's what looks like attempted cost cutting in some of the design of these sets (even though I like the pricing) and all these dang Robber minifigures... how many people do you know engaged in criminal activity in their prison gear!? What to do with all these torsos....?

PS: The Kingdoms buildings are awesome! Almost makes me want to loose City and start a Mid-evil layout...

Gravatar
By in United States,

The HP sets are okay, so are Ninjago. Alien Conquest is a great theme-i'd say the best of the Lego Martian/Space themes-certainly better than the last Space Police and Mars Mission. the 2 new Atlantis sets look excellent, as do the new City themes (don't buy many of them, but they still look nice.) The Hero Factory looks, instead of "upgraded", "downgraded"-signifigantly. As for all those who complain about the repeats of the Star Wars sets, the only reason Lego does that is because every year, new kids enter the lego world, and want those sets-not knowing that they've been out before.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN is certainly the BEST theme-and possibly the best of 2011-we'll see. Can't wait for the first Black Pearl set pictures...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I, unlike most people, really like the frigate, much like the battle for Geonosis set, it is a very useful item for creating a scene or for playing with, although of course I don't do that *cough* yes I do *cough*.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sigh. Childish name calling isn't big or clever. It's also going to get your posts deleted ... [offending post removed]

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sad that there are no new pictures of the other technic sets, mostly the Unimog.
The lighthouse looks so good and the rocket base is kind of expensive, but looks like it will be fun to play with

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The POTC sets look much better than I originally thought. The mini-figures have an amazing level of detail. Sets I think worthwhile are The Queen Anne's Revenge, Whitecap Bay, The Mill and The Cannibal Escape.

For Alien Conquest I really like the mini-figures that come with the set and the fact that the set seems to have lights that light up to it. UFO Abduction looks awesome as well but I wonder how the Abduction function works. I'm more interested in using the saucer as a saucer section for a MOC Star Trek ship. Jet Copter Encounter looks awesome. Tripod Invader looks okay. It's worth getting if you're going to get the rest of these. Alien Conquest is my favorite theme so far this year.

Kingdoms is looking really good this year too. The Mill Village Raid has so many amazing mini-figures and animals and the buildings in the set are amazing too. The King's Carriage Ambush looks fantastic. Now that's a carriage fit for a king. Escape from Dragon's Prison looks decent. I like the fence piece. That makes the set for me.

I typically like Space themed anything but I'm not feeling the Space sub-theme of City this time around. The Satellite Launch Pad is disappointing. The Space Centre is underwhelming but the rocket itself does look good. The Space Shuttle is not impressive either. The space shuttles from the following sets: 1682, 6346, 10213, and 6339 are much more impressive.

For the City sets, the Power Boat Transporter, Marina and Fishing Boat all look amazing. The Marina is a must have for me.

Finally, the Creator sets. Lighthouse Island looks great but I think I'll skip it. I was hoping for photos of Hillside House but didn't see them in that link. I found photos of that set on another site but still haven't made up my mind on it yet. Does anyone know if LEGO will come out with more modular building sets this year (e.g., Green Grocer or Grand Emporium)?

I find a lot of the new sets (both licensed and unlicensed) to be expensive. Many of the sets look amazing so in the end they're worth it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There goes "Battle for Hogwarts" off my list....

Gravatar
By in United States,

The main highlights of my view of summer are Bulk 3.0, Witch Doctor, and the Alien Conquest.
I just LOVE the mask on bulk. and the new orange new-style head? PRICELESS. witch doctor is REALLY big and awesome. and the alien conquest... i do want the one that abducts lego people...
i also like the ninjago fire temple... the "main feature" is something to look forward to....

Gravatar
By in United States,

This may not be a popular sentiment, but I am a bit disappointed if TLG discontinued the Pirate Theme in favor of PotC. Don't get me wrong, the PotC sets are amazing as they depict the movies. However, the original Pirates themes was a lot more vibrant and held a lot more playability than this new theme.

Pirates theme was what really got me into Lego 20+ years ago, and I was hoping to continue the theme with my boys. However, I will not be purchasing any of of these sets outside of the ships (to bolster my Lego Pirate fleet).

I will continue my efforts on the City and Kingdoms/Castle themes.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@aplbomr79 - I share your sentiment! I miss the pirate theme of the late 80's and early 90's and feel that they offered greater playability too. That said, PotC isn't bad - it's just not as good as the traditional pirates!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Marina isn't so bad if you loose the bridge and just make it a rolling strip. The harbor....um....so the boat is on level with the road? Wouldn't water just go right over? A vehicle can just easily drive into the ocen now. No barriers? No raised dock? It just looks odd. I really need to get over the fact that nothing will ever look as good as it did in the late 80's/early 90's. Shame really.

Gravatar
By in United States,

aplbomr79-I kind of know what you mean. Adventurers was what first got me into LEGO, I was devestated when it was replaced be Indiana Jones. I am also glad we haven't seen any new PQ. . . .

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wish they had more Pharoah's Quest or new Adventure style sets. Maybe for the latter half of 2011?

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO Spongebob is NOT Duplo! I can finally resume my original collection. The sets look great and nicely detailed aswell. The POTC sets look very nice also, Sparrow himself is looking quite nice!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

The new Harry Potter sets looks really good! Hope that it will be more sets in 2012 :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I want Lego to make Grimwald Place. It should shrink and grow, come with Sirus and Kreacher and be the same size as the grand emporium, etc.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, they could include the neighboring buildings, have nothing in them except for some slides and then have them slide infront of #12 which would be slightly smaller I suppose. LEGO wouldn't do that though. . . .

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Some pretty nice sets there! I'm for sure picking up ewok attack, sith infiltrator, pod race, and if true then the naboo star fighter!

Gravatar
