The collectable minifig gallery is taking shape

Posted by ,

I've made a start on the collectable minifig gallery: I had series 3 handy so I've done them first.

I'd appreciate your feedback on the categories I've used, I'm hoping all figs will fall into one of the 5: present day, present day sports, historical, futuristic and fantasy, but I can tweak them if that's not the case.

Yay! Thank you Huw! I think that the pics are wonderful. The catagories will work well for the CMs, I think. You might want to put the mummy in historical, though.

Lovely! The Mummy looks a bit like a polar bear in a snowstorm though ;-)

By in United States,

Nice, are you going to add the other minifig collections?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would have categorised them in series instead. I'm glad you've started with a few.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why not sort them by series?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think they are great. I would leave them where they are if I was you. Whats next? Series 2? Series 1?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Excellent work again. A suggestion may be to make an exception for the collectible minifigures and include their accessories. I can see why you wouldn't, but they sort of seem slightly not themselves. (Oh god! Empathising with minifigs.....)

By in United Kingdom,

Good gallery, love the category placements!

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

That's another great work, sir!

Should you continue with your categories, I would suggest " sports and recreation" so you could actually place the fisherman there, as well as other figures from the first two series. But maybe along the line you could diverge a little more with your categories. :-)

Also, there seem to be a lot of musicians and clowns, and others, so I would also suggest "arts and entertainment" as another category...again, that's just me.

By in United Kingdom,

Excellent pictures as usual but I agree with a couple of others that they should be in Series categories otherwise people who aren't well informed won't know which figures are from which series!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Could they have a Series tag so that we could filter by series if we wanted, similar to the BF/AF (before and after flesh) filter?

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Nice work Huw, the gallery looks amazing, and dividing them into those categories is a neat idea. I especially like the way you've put the cap on the rapper sideways, he's just that cool! :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

How about a 'Horror/Monster' theme (Zombie, Witch, Mummy, Vampire, Frankenstein's Monster, Werewolf)?
Also, I second the arts/entertainment theme! :]

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Great! I like all the minifig gallery, great work!

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

The horror/monster theme is also nice! So is the series tag!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Categories are perfect, but the fisherman's beard is off center. :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why don't you include the accesories as well? That is probably the only thing I do not like about it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Honestly, my only suggestion would be to arrange them by series.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^ I agree......not a big fan of the categories. If Lego advertised, referred and/or identified them as such.....I would agree. It's perfect to make it simple and put them by series.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It actually isn't called "Collectible Minifigures", it's just "Minifigures". Nice job for providing these nice pictures.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks Great, Accessories would be great in addition to these pics, also a black or gray backdrop to make the light figs really pop i.e. mummy :) keep up the good work!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Great photos, but I'd love to see them organized by series...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

More excellent pics - thanks !

I would drop "Present Day" and "Present Day Sports". The latter can just be "Sports". I'd suggest a "Music" Category and a "Workers" category (e.g. nurse, fisherman etc.). Anything that's left can just go into "Other".....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Keep them by series please. That's what they are.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I don't intend to show them in series, sicne you can do that anyway at e.g. http://www.brickset.com/minifigs/myCollection/?category=Collectible+Minifigures+%2f+Series+3+Minifigures&showOwned=1&showNotOwned=1 if you're logged in.

I'm looking forward to seeing similar figures from different series grouped together. However I will add (series 3) or whatever to the end of the names to aid identification.

Thanks @DrD for the suggestions, I suspect I'll refine the categories once I add series 1 and 2 which will hopefully be later this week.

Gravatar
By in Israel,

Looks great. But I agree with the others, the categories will need to be tweaked when you add series 1, 2, and 4 eventually...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

category for Monster/Horror will help....

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it! I think the categories are great!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Another great job Huw, I cannot wait to see the rest. But I really think you should include pictures of the accessories.

I'm not sure Categories are needed. Being un-official, they will always be subjective and open to debate. Are the Pilot and Explorer Present day or Historical ? Where would you put the Kimono Girl or Demolition Dummy ? It could be a bit of a can of worms. If you want to keep them, maybe rename Present Day to: City, a nice Lego catch-all. And include the Series before the minifig name.

And I agree you should have a standard grey background for light coloured minifigs, like the Mummy.

Thats my two pennies ...

By in United States,

Love all the pics. The Mummy came out fine. On my screen it's clean and clear on my end.

For categories...my suggestion, instead of 'futuristic' and 'fantasy' put 'Fantasy and Sci-Fi' together as one category.
Like another above, 'Sports and Recreation' is better to include the Fisherman and a variety of others.
For the Rapper and Hula Girl, they can fall into 'Arts and Entertainment'. So many from the other series will fall into this category.
For Historic...I'd say put just 'History' as the heading.
Then you'll have others like Traffic Cop, Nurse etc. they can go under like a 'City/Town' category.

I'm guessing Gorilla Suit Guy and Crash Test Dummy could be put in a 'Misc.' spot but it's debatable like Gorilla Suit Guy can fall into Arts and Entertainment and Crash Test could be in 'City/Town'.

By in United States,

Yes, distilling all the comments above, It definitely seems like if you go with these 6 (or 7) categories...

1) Arts & Entertainment (This category is vital, since many of these figs would never be included in normal sets!)
2) Sports & Recreation
3) City Workers (incl. hazmat guy, nurse, sailor, cop, crash test dummy, graduate, zoo keeper, lumberjack)
4) Historical (incl. 1800's explorer, WWII pilot, kimono girl, royal guard, Sherlock Holmes, 1920's gangster, Inuit)
5) Futuristic
6) Fantasy / Monsters (incl. the gnome, the monster-movie-style mummy, the mad scientist, and Godzilla guy)

...then this will set up at least one solid category for every future fig, with minimal debate over category overlaps.

Gravatar
By in United States,

And yes, the crash test dummy is a wildcard, but he would go perfect under "City Workers".

He has the hardest job of all! =)

Gravatar
By in United States,

And I am sure that people will want to put the Gorilla-Suit-Guy (as King Kong) versus the new Godzilla-Suit-Guy!!

Gravatar
By in Norway,

I think there should be a category for horror. A lot of these are taken directly from the movies. The question is: Where does the witch go? She's taken directly from "The Wizard of Oz", she's scary, but that's not a horror movie... Then again, if it's only called horror, it wont necessarily have to be that exclusive.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Fantastic! Just what I was hoping for! However, I was excepting them to be listed by series, not by theme/category.
Still good!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

@The_real_indy - I totally agree with you! Great ideas!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I think this gallery is great idea, as set pictures are made in a 3D program, shown by how they have flexible body parts.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Hello,
When I watched the pictures I only had one thought. Mummy's do exist and are not a Fantasy and therefor belong to the Historical. And see what the very first comment was.
All the rest is up to you Huw because everyone will have their own wishes and you can never do right for everyone.
Keep up the good work.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It's interesting how much discussion the ordering and grouping of the pictures is causing! Clearly it's a subject everyone's passionate about!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm totally understanding the Mummy being in the fantasy section. Yes, mummies do exist, but the LEGO minifigure Mummy is a character with yellow/green glowing eyes that thumps around causing goosebumps to creep up on unexpecting skin (or worse...). It's not a historical representation of a mummy.

I like the categories this way because it kind of allows you to see what figures there are instead of what series collections there are (I actually group my collection, hold your socks on with this one, by predominant color. There are many sites out there that show the series (including this one). Seeing the minifigures in similar categories allows a collector to get a more overall view of the collection series.

I'm not sure what categories I'd suggest, but I do know that I'm not feeling the "present day" and "present day - sports" groups. There just seems like there should be better groups than those. I like the "historical" and "fantasy" labels but think that the more traditional "sci-fi" would be more appropriate for the "futuristic" group. It seems like the "sports" is going to grow into a really large group and some subdivisions may be necessary.

I can't wait to get home and play around with my figures to see what groups I can come up with. I really think that better groups will evolve once more pictures are available.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yet another great gallery Huw! But I think it would be a tiny bit better if they were organized by series. But then again, I don't own any of the collectible minifigs, so I probably shoudn't complain ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

The more I look at these categories...the more I hate them. Sorry Huw....but being honest. I vote for these minifigs to be listed by series. This is what the general public and fans of the minifigs know best.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah, I'm more under the impression that the Mummy belongs to a 'Horror' category along-side Vampire, Witch, Werewolf and Frankenstein's Monster than it does a 'Historical' category. It's just not a realistic rendition of a mummy.

I like the idea of the categorical view - you can already view them by series using standard Brickset features. The categories will help when someone wants to collect by kind (like, I want all the 'Movie Monster' figures), not by series. That said, I'd like to see 'Futuristic' be changed to 'Sci-Fi' - but that's just a personal preference.

I also think you could create a 'Circus' category for the Clown, Magician, Ringmaster, etc. They could, however, be lumped in with other figures if you went with the 'Arts & Entertainment' idea.

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

As an offshoot of the mummy debates, I just thought that of all the characters so far, the crash test dummy is the only one which is supposed to be not alive, technically...so it can't be placed in any category. It's in a league of its own!

And the garden gnome. (Creepy little things, they are. Put it in 'horror' with the vampire, etc.)
