Collectable minifig gallery is now complete

Posted by ,

I've added series 2 minifigs to the gallery so it's now complete. Well, until series 4, anyway...

I've changed the categories around, and I must thank vynsane for suggesting them. I'm sure you'll find plenty to comment on :-)

Amazing! Love the new categories! You're the best. And I can't wait for all the comments that will arise from the potentially controversial "Extreme Sports" section. :)

By in United Kingdom,

Great stuff, much better, I really like seeing them categorised like this instead of by series. Well done Vyn!

The series looks great Huw!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awesome! I really like how this looks. I would probably move the disco dude to arts/entertainment.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would place the Ringmaster, Clown and the Magician in their own category.
Group together the Rapper, Disco Dude and Pop star as musicians
I would also consider the skier to be under extreme sports

By in United States,

The changes I may make are:

- Move the disco dude to arts/entertainment, as he could be a pro DJ
- Move the diver to City, he too could be a pro and not doing it as a sport
- Do something with the elf who doesn't really fit well with the others in that category. Maybe rename Horror to Horror/fantasty and put him there, and rename Sci-Fi/Fantasy to just Sci-Fi

Let me know what you think...

@amo, I think when we're on series 6/7/8 that will make sense, but for now we'll end up with a category:fig ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 if we're not careful :)

By in United States,

Looks great, I like how you incorporated the taller images with the bigger headgear with the rest. Looks smooth...;)
And I'm glad some of my suggestions made it in...Arts and Entertainment, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and City.
I like the Horror category and Extreme Sports is fine too.
Great lookin' gallery!

Looks awesome. Much better categories now!

Gravatar
By in United States,

All great, Huw!! Have you made room for S4?! ;p

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Looks great, don't change a thing! Even if there is a series 6/7/8 and they end up bringing out animals or something... leave it as it is. Fit the tiger into sports or something, it'll be great!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Horror was a good idea and great gallery update! Cant wait for series 4 and 5 to be added in future!

By in Netherlands,

Disco dude should probably go in entertainment.

[FlameBait]
As should the cheerleader. Cheerleading is obviously no sport, but nonetheless very entertaining to look at :)
Skiing is for wimps, so no way it belongs in extreme sports :)

I think the Disco Dude should be placed in the Historical section, and the Gorilla Suit Guy surely is wearing the suit for some sort of entertainment purpose. I think he'd definitely fit in the Entertainment section well and that would make the City section look more cohesive.

I definitely agree that the elf looks completely out of place. Horror/Fantasy would be a much more properly matched category. I thought he looked well in place alongside the mummy and zombie.

And I agree that the diver would look in place in the City section moreso than the sports section. Or he'd fit into the extreme sports section but...

I'm not a fan of the Extreme Sports section. An extreme surfer would be wearing a bodysuit in my opinion as these are people who take their sporting seriously. This surfer just looks like a guy that would be at the beach for a day of fun. Same for the skater. Just looks like a City kid. The snowboarder would easily fit into the sports section as would the skater and surfer if they really must. The Extreme Sports section just seems excessive.

By in United States,

I can't nearly take full credit for these, as many people made some great suggestions in previous comment threads.

@ambo100 - I considered the Skier for Extreme sports, but he looks a bit dorky, to be honest. He's got a number on his back, too, which denotes him as a competitor in an established sporting event, be it Ski Jump, Cross-Country or Downhill. While Extreme Sports are having a huge impact on established sports and are becoming more commonplace in 'official' events, they originated as a counter-culture to the established sports.

@rslotb - I must disagree with your assertion that cheerleading isn't a sport. The jumping, flipping and especially stacking take a greater amount of skill and coordination than many other sports.

@ericjohn - In defense of the 'Extreme Sports' category, it's not really about people who take their sporting 'seriously' (although, the forthcoming CMFs4 Surfer Girl DOES sport a wetsuit, so there you go...) - it's a counter-culture within sporting which is exemplified by the figures that are placed in that category. You could liken 'Extreme Sports' to 'Alternative Music' in relation to 'Sports' and 'Pop Music', respectively. In that way, those figures that have been labeled as such stand apart from the other sports figures in such a way that they look out of place when standing next to those in the 'Sports' category.

If you lump the surfer and skater into 'City', that category will get very large - the idea here is to subdivide based on like characteristics, which those current three (soon five) figures all have in common. Diving, however, is not considered an 'Extreme Sport' - unless it's some sort of 'shark fighting' or 'colossal squid wrestling' or something, which would actually be awesome. In fact, any sport you can refer to as 'awesome' or 'radical' fits into 'Extreme Sports' ;)

Additionally, the Surfer from CMFs1 definitely doesn't just look like a guy out for a day of fun at the beach - that's definitely a lifestyle for him. He LIVES on the beach ;)

By in United States,

How about doing a 'Sports and Recreation' category instead of just 'Sports' and 'Extreme Sports'.
Covers more bases I think. Skater Kid would fit in this nicely.

Also maybe Forest Man in Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Disco Dude and Gorilla Suit Guy in Arts and Entertainment as well.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Move the disco dude to arts/ entertainement

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Also, I like the little ticks in the corner showing you if you have the figure, but series 3 dont appear to work, and a few of series 2

Gravatar
By in France,

near perfect catégories! :) what about horror/fantasy instead so that the elf doesn't seem out of place with the more futuristic tone of the sci-fi catégorie?

Gravatar
By in Italy,

These are some great categories! However, I think the Disco dude should be in the "Arts/Entertainment" section.

Gravatar
By in Israel,

I think that the Disco Guy needs to be in Art/Entertainment. Besides that it is perfect.

Beautiful pictures, and great work!

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

good job Huw! i really like the categories but i think that the disco dude should go in arts/entertainment. other than that, perfect!

Gravatar
By in Norway,

The categories are much better now! I'm glad you made the horror category, which I think is good, for now. When Series 4 come out, you can move the Elf and the Witch to a category named "Fantasy", where they could be joined by the Gnome and the Dwarf. Also, "Sports" and "Extreme Sports" could be divided into "Summer Sports", "Winter Sports" and "Beach/Marina/Nautic/etc.".

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks for the great gallery! The only changes that I would make would be:
1) Put the Mime's beret on the right way :)
2) Move the Disco Dude to 'Arts and Entertainment'
3) Take the Forestman and Elf to make a 'Fantasy' catagory
4) Move the Deep Sea Diver to 'City'
5) Take a second picture of the Race Car Driver with his hair on

By in Denmark,

Personally I´d consider wrestling a more 'extreme' sport than skating... but in general, I don´t see why all the sports couldn´t be a single category, especially with Extreme Sports only holding three minifigs.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I don't see why there should be two groups of sport: sport is sport. And to me horror is also a fantasy.
A disco guy is entertaining. These days there are still pilots flying old planes so he is not really historical. Astronauts are people like you and me and are flying Space-Shuttles so he is not sci-fi but just a city.
@rslotb: A cheerleader dances and that's also kind of sport.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow!!! With all the sightings today of S4, get out and look and post and update! We can go on and on with this discussion, or we can start collecting! Not being sarcastic, but it has been amusing to read ALL the hype over categories.....I for one say exemplary job Huw on all the galleries!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Tweaks made, as per my comment above.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I agree with all categories, and thinking about Series 4/5, can't immediately think of any which don't fall into these categories. Great work! :]

Gravatar
By in United States,

The catagories appear to be extremely helpful and to the point. The one thing I don't quite understand is the difference between the sports and extreme sports category. Sumo wrestling seems to be a rather extreme sport to me while snowboarding is a lot more ordinary. If there must be two sports categories, I think one devoted to the Olympics and one devoted to non-Olympic sports would be a reasonable change.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@xiaolong...I believe the Spaceman is under Sci-Fi because he comes with a futuristic laser type weapon.

Don't mind the Fantasy/Horror category to give the Elf a home. That works. Scuba Diver in City works as well.
Lovin' the gallery. Can't wait to see it with Series 4....soon.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is sweet... but sports and extreme sports really do not need to be separate categories. That said, this is excellent, and useful. well done...

Gravatar
By in Ukraine,

OK, we are going to have 17 sports figs in a few months, plus many more to come, so how about simply...

1) "Olympic Sports" (skiing, figure skating, weightlifting, (plus boxing?) (plus snowboarding?) (plus judo?))
2) "Professional Sports" (baseball, tennis, hockey, soccer, racing, cheerleading, lucha libre wrestling, sumo wrestling, boxing... I am sure we will soon see basketball, american football, and many more of these in the near future!)
3) "Amateur Sports" (skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, judo, and the recreational scuba diver)

...That would all be a bit more useful and hopefully mostly non-controversial! =)

Gravatar
By in Ukraine,

Also, notice that what makes this particular scuba diver unique is that he is just a normal everyday recreational diver in an off-the-rack wetsuit, (and that is why I like him) rather than a member of some sort of sci-fi-fantasy-paramilitary-mercenary-action-agents-team as we have seen with all of the official LEGO scuba themes to date!

Therefore, he would fit perfectly under "Amateur Sports", rather than "Olympic Sports" or "Professional Sports".

By in Australia,

One thing: in the yellow box at the top it says "every minifig from series 3" when it's from 1, 2 and 3!
Love the new categories, however!

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

The Maraca man is why not in the History??? He is a Western minifig. :D

Gravatar
By in France,

the mime should be in "horror" lol

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

@TinyTurbosCityAndToyStory You have right!
Huw, this gallery is awesome! Cant wait to series 4!

Gravatar
By in United States,

the_real_indy's "Olympic Sports," "Professional Sports," and "Amateur Sports" are much more definable categories than the current "Sports" and "Extreme Sports" which are very subjective. I really like those suggestions.

I still think that the Gorilla-Suit-Man would jive better with the Entertainment figures, and the Disco Dude looks good with the Entertainment figures but should be placed in the Historical since that category does exsist. Sure, he could be a 70s revivalist, but then that could be said about any of the historical figures. Kind of.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My two pennies worth:
- PLEASE add accessories.
- Merge the Adjectiveless and Extreme Sports into just Sports. Apparently Solo Synchronized Swimming was an Olympic Sport in 1984, 1988 and 1992 ...
- Move Skater Boy into City and Gorilla Suit Guy into Art/Entertainment.
- Start thinking about what you'll do with Kimono Girl and Lawn Gnome !

[Going off topic: if the Lawn Gnome was minifig scale, would it be about the size of the Judo trophy ?]

Excellent work Huw, and I'm glad everyone is having fun with categories

Gravatar
By in Ukraine,

Wow... Plus we are going to have at least 21 figures that will fit squarely into the "Historical" category by Summer!

If we do the standard historical eras, it will deepen the theme of history, and it should work out very evenly...

1) "Paleolithic Cultures / Ancient World" (incl. Caveman, Inuit, Tribal Hunter / Spartan, Cleopatra, Gladiator, etc.)
2) "Global Medieval and Age of Discovery" (incl. Forestman, Viking, Musketeer, Samurai, Ninja, Geisha, etc.)
3) "Modern History" (incl. 1800s Explorer, Cowboy, WWII pilot, Sherlock Holmes, 1920s Gangster, etc.)

...whereas if you divide them up by regions, you will have too many Europeans and only a few others...

1) "The Americas / New World" (incl. Inuit, Tribal Hunter, Cowboy, Gangster, etc.)
2) "Europe and the Middle East" (incl. Caveman, Pharaoh, Spartan, Cleopatra, Gladiator, Viking, Forestman, Musketeer, Explorer, Sherlock Holmes, Royal Guard, WWII pilot, etc.)
3) "Asia and the Far East" (incl. Samurai, Ninja, Geisha, etc.)

I love the first way because it will juxtapose characters from around the world that could have met up in real life, and so it allows more scenes of exploration/discovery/interaction/globalism... very "LEGO-like"... plus the numbers of characters in each group break down much more evenly!

Place your vote on which method you like better, and again, hopefully this will mostly non-controversial! =D

Love,

I think that extreme sports, are sports that should have a much higher risk of injury than any sport in the sports catagory; (eg skating: while skating a half pipe you can easily fall off your skateboard and break a bone, snowboarding: since both feet are strapped to the board, you cannot just jump off if you know you are going to fall, and if your on a mountain there is a high potential of injury there as well). For skating and snowboarding it is commen that you will go down avery steep hill or go off of a steep ramp; again increasing the risk of injury, I also think that skiing should be in extreme sports too(for the same reasons as snowboarding).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh my goodness.... I am so bothered by these categories. Obviously, there are many ways of dividing up the minifigs and moreover the categories overlap. Maracas man can be entertainment or historical. Forestman can be either historical or fantasy. The upcoming Viking can be placed in historical but really is not because of the horns. He represents the pop cultural, or fantasy, representation of a Viking. The gorilla suit guy can be placed in entertainment or can remain in City. The diver can be put in sports or can remain in City. Etc, etc.

Anyways, since we must have these guys classified I guess the current system is pretty decent. EXCEPT for sports/extreme sports.

Get rid of extreme sports. Some sports used to be counter cultural, now they are mainstream. Skiers in the X-games wear numbers. Some snowboarders are mainstream recreational. This category just doesn't sit well. Instead, break sports up into competitive sports and recreational sports. Baseball, Cheerleader, Karate, Racer, Skier, Sumo, and Wrestler into the former. Diver, weightlifter, skater, snowboarder, and surfer into the later. Tennis is a tossup, but based on the bio I think competitive.

Speaking of bios, if you're keeping extreme sports then skier should make the cut: "The enthusiastic Skier is constantly plunging off cliffs, crashing into trees, and performing accidental loop-the-loops through the air. He can’t help tackling any new downhill challenge that he comes across, even if his attempts don’t always end so well!" Plunging off cliffs is extreme skiing.

And of course and the number of minifigs grow classification will have to be revisited.

Cool, looks great!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would like to see additional categories that would have figures repeated in them, such as having all of the women together and/or all the warriors together (Spartan, Samurai, Elf, Forestman, Viking, Ninja, Tribal Hunter, Tribal Chief, Musketeer). Just an idea.
