Brickset welcomes new moderators

Posted by ,

I have recruited three new moderators: fellow Brickish Association members Martin, bluemoose and Doctor Sinister. Their job will be to make sure we all play nicely in here, so please behave so they don't have much to do :)

By in United States,

First off, I would like to say welcome to brickset, Martin Bluemoose and Doctor Sinister. It is always nice to see that behind this amazing website there are actual people. I am Leggodt, and I do try to stay on-topic as much as I can, but if someone says something that upsets me that mightt also be off-topic I do respond. Hey, wait, Doctor Sinister, I've seen that name before. You used to be an ordinary brickset member, and you would always end out each comment with a "DS". Nice trademark by the way, but now I guess you've really gotten into it. Nice! :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hi Leggodt and anyone else reading. Yes, I'm Doctor Sinister, I've been back in the LEGO groove for the last year or so after some real life got in the way for a bit.

I'm glad to be here and to be trusted to ensure that things remain on track. Thanks Huw.

Hopefully I won't have much to do!

Dr. S.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

welcome and i see in the future you will be deleating many of my comments

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh! Oops! That's right! You end your comments with a "Dr. S". My bad! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Welcome! Have fun working for Brickset!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Just to clarify, it's "Martin" & "bluemoose", two separate people. :-)

Very happy to be here & helping out.

Ian

Gravatar

Oh, that's funny cause Martin bluemoose sounds like a funny name! :D

Gravatar

Isn't Dr. Sinister a Brickarms guy? But anyway thats good!!
Congratulations Martin, Dr.Sinister, and bluemoose!!!

Welcome new mods!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Welcome aboard!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey, Doctor Sinister, how did you go from ordinary brickset member to brickset moderator?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ah, Leggodt, good question. We've all actually been Brickset fans for a long time and we've known each other for several years now via the UK AFOL scene. We've collaborated on building, enjoyed a beverage or three together and even taken over a curry house for an evening. Therefore, I guess the answer to your question is personal acquaintance and ultimately, trust.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's nice that great friends can get together an enjoy a good conversation over LEGO. I'm glad that brickset offers this. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Martin is correct - although having a small stash of nuclear weapons is also a good bargaining tool. Oops, I've said too much.

@martinlegokitty4n5, yes you may know me from Brickarms where I have a spotlight page and the occasional forum post, but that's as far as it goes. Like a lot of AFOLs, I frequent a number of places online.

Dr. S.

Welcome Martin, Bluemoose, and Doctor Sinister! Hope you don't have much to do here... :D

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Hello and welcome Martin, bluemoose and Doctor Sinister I hope no one causes any trouble for you guys

Gravatar
By ,

Welcome new moderators! its nice to see moderators :) although your names are cool mine is like flat broke. Also i have seen your guys collections there bigger than mines. Like i own 25 sets
>.> but if i have to much lego my house will be screaming that theres to much and it cant take it.

sev15

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sev15, I'm pretty sure that with a collection of only 25 sets that everyone's collection is bigger than your's. Ha, nuclear weapons that's hilarious, Dr. S! :D It's nice to see that some of our moderators have a sense of humor. Oh, and martin, bluemoose, and Dr. S, would it be alright if a review of mine was not posted that here on this article I could post a comment that asks why it was not posted?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Yeah, so this gives you moderator status, huh? How come your comments aren't yellow, or is that only admins? Also, how come Grahame and Huw are admins yet they live completely 12,000 miles apart from each other?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

> How come your comments aren't yellow,

Good point, I'll change that!

> how come Grahame and Huw are admins yet they live completely 12,000 miles apart from each other?

Because we set up the site together waaay back in time, before most of you here were born (1997) :-)

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Hi guys.

Docter sinister are you part of eurobricks??? Just wondering because I see your name quite a lot.

Also welcome.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I remember that Doctor Sinister did a reveiw of the Indy Jones set with the two trucks, but not on Brickset.
Thanks for the answers Huw, I guess I'm just inquisitive about Brickset itself. Also, it was set up in the UK wasn't it, because the time is completely different. Yet, why are you up at 2:15 in the morning? Oh well, I hope that you will have a bit of extra time to do whatever on the site. :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Brickset web servers run at Eastern Standard Time which is 5 hours behind GMT. So, for UK people, add 5 hours to their post time and you'll get their local time. You'll see that Huw's messages are at sensible times but Dr S and myself were online late last night!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hi Dr.S, you know me right? Nice to see you're a mod here, a fellow British/Brickcish Lego Fan!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was born before 1997, Huw. And that's funny, skytalker, I was about ready to ask the exact same question(why aren't your comments yellow?). And, I'd like an answer to my question please. :)

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Welcome new moderators! I hope that you find fun moderate brickset :)!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Leggodt, if one of your reviews wasn't posted, I'm sure there must have been a very good reason for that. Feel free to send me a copy of it.

Dr. S.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wrote about three reviews but they never showed up too! Sadly, I don't have a copy of it.... :( Oh by the way, Welcome Doctor Sinister, Martin, and bluemoose!!! Dr. S you are HILARIOUS! It is nice to have new moderators! By the way I was born before 1997. I have a REALLY GOOD question, who has been the longest active member that still writes review and adds sets to their "My Sets" page? Just wondering..... :) I hope you guys don't have to do much work around the site!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh no, please everyone stop saying stuff about brickbrain.net. And that was completely off topic, it's going to be deleted. So are you 4 the only moderators? Or are there more?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Fighter 95 - there are 12 Moderator models, but no-one knows who the final five are... :-D

(sorry, been watching too much Battlestar Galactica)

Dr. S.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yay! Good job guys, and fast too :D Brickbrain better not come back again...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I dont get it, what do you mean the final five?

Gravatar
By in United States,

yeah, wht fighter95 said...

Hey why didn't i get chosen to be a moderator? I would love the job, for free, would like to get it this summer, email me if you want me to! =D

I still can't decide what i should get- Death Star of some battle packs for my collection? What do you guys think. Email also if you want to help me and i'll give you details. Today is 5/14, so email me before Saturday! Thanks!

Wow, never heard of this brick club in the UK, gonna check it out!

-Da_LegoBuilder

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sorry, the "Final 5" comment might be a bit lost on you if you are not up to speed on the latest series of BSG. Apologies. I'll try not to be so obscure. :-)

Dr. S.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thats a great idea! BTW don't want to sound stupid, but what is BSG?

Gravatar
By in N/A,

Welcome New Mods(Martin, bluemoose and Docter Sinister). Sorry off-topic, but I know why Brickbrain kept posting about how Brickbrain.net is good and stuff. On the site this is what it said. "This site is for the people who got kicked out of brickset.com. We are trying to make a site that other people will go to. But we are still trying to get people to go here. Will someone go to brickset.com site and tell people in all the news articles that we are here? We would love it. Thanks, and, happy building!"

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

lego12, BSG = Battlestar Galactica. You are not listening to the Doctor, and that is not wise... :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh I see where he he typed Battlestar Galactica! Sorry, my mistake! :) It is 12:28 p.m. in the UK, wow you guys are CrAzY to be staying up that late! Is Battlestar Galactica a movie?, because if it is i will go rent it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Battle Star Galactica, lego12. And, Doctor Sinister, I was simply asking IF a review of mine was not posted that I could ask why because I know there's a reason, but I would like to know that reason. But, lately my reviews have been posted so I'm in good shape. By the way, new mods, do you guys actualy rate reviews, because it would be soooo cool if one of my reviews was rated a "Yes" by an actual brickset moderator. By the way that number is one quadrillion percent, lego12.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey, I have a brilliant idea! Why don't we forget about and ignore those brickbrain goofballs and keep asking our new moderators some more questions like, do you guys moderate things other than reviews and comments?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

ok but complaing is more fun , so is there any lego afol's in canada

Gravatar
By in United States,

I ALMOST have all of the NEW Indy sets! I need Jungle Duel! I just got Jungle Cutter! That is off-topic so sorry!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Um, lego12, were you being sarcastic?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

May I ask the age of the new moderators? I do know that my Unlce in law is into BSG and Star Trek etc. Who out of the Mods likes star wars? (Question excludes the missing 5)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ummm... you might want to get back on topic, as all this chat is what a forum is for. New mods, I have a question. Is there a mod in each time-zone, so no one will post a spammy comment and have it ignored all night?

Gravatar
By ,

Mods I have a question (not a off-topic one either >.>) um why is that every day im always logged off of brickset and also i am clicking on the box when i sign back in?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

That is a small bug that the Mods might want to deal with. Also there is another bug which happens when you spend too long typing a reveiw or comment. What happens is that it just says "Not logged in." It gets quite anoying, and the only way to get your information back is to press back and then copy and paste it onto a newly opened page. Once this happened with me on a really long MTT reveiw I wrote, and because I spent way too long it disappeared completely from the page after I pressed back. Also it doesn't work if you press back twice and then press forward. A tip I usually use is to copy the information, and then post it. And then you have the information you might lose safe on the clipboard. I would like that bug fixed thanks. Maybe Huw can do it in his newfound spare time. :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

wow we get amazingly off topic in here

p.s. Huw, a great many of us were born before '97, actually.

1994 - go Ice Planet

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sorry chaps, I can't help with changes to the site, I'm just here to keep an eye on posts and reviews. Meanwhile...in response to some queries...

I'm 36, and I have a limitless number of clones so it is impossible for me to ever be wholly destroyed. :-)

I am a fan of Star Wars, Star Trek, BSG, Babylon 5...you name it and I'm probably into it, but my greatest sci-fi love of all is...Doctor Who. I have a loft full of DW stuff dating back more than 40 years.

There are a few more details about my LEGO interests in my Brickset profile and that's probably it really.

Dr. S.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

hey dr sinister did you choose that insted of dr who because of me, also im a sci fi geek too

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No, I've been using this handle for ten years or more.

Dr. S.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I thought this was a comment system, to comment on the original news article, and not a chat board ... my mistake, apparently (yes, that *was* sarcasm :-P )

I'm 40. I'm married, & we have two fir-kids (cats). I've been into Lego my entire life - I don't get much time to build at the moment (work takes up too much time) but I enjoy what time I do get to build as I find it an excellent de-stresser.

As moderators here on Brickset, we have relatively few things we can do - all new reviews have to be manually approved by a Mod before they become visible; and we can delete reviews or comments. That's about it, as far as I've been able to work out.

I used to be a Mod over on FBTB, and had been for several years, but gave that up a little over a year ago for various reasons I won't go into.

On a personal note, other hobbies I have include: photography, technology/gadgetry, driving my car quickly. I'm a huge sci-fi fan, but although I enjoy many current & recent TV shows (BSG mk.2, Stargate franchise, classic Trek & DS9, ...) my first love is sci-fi books, particularly so-called the 'hard sci-fi' & space opera sub-genres. Current fave authors include Ian M.Banks, Charles Stross, Ken McCleod, Alastair Reynolds, Greg Egan, Neal Asher, ...

Ian.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey, does your wife think that it's weird that you still collect lego even though you are a grown man, bluemoose?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nope; she's a fan too :-D

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really? I'm a bit confused. : (

Gravatar
By in Canada,

funny thing is im still young but i get made fun of for playing with lego but your old and dont get made fun of ,can you explain that

Gravatar
By in Canada,

now the funny part is the kid that still makes fun of me has no freinds and played with rescue heroes till he was in grade 4 or 10 years old

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Leggodt: "I'm a bit confused" - why ? My wife is a fan of Lego too; it is a shared interest/hobby. She particularly enjoys the 'public facing' part of the hobby (talking to people at shows/exhibitions, etc.), talking about the MOCs we've built.

doctorwho/: "your old" - gee, thanks for that :-(
I'm not embarrassed by it; I'm sure some people think I'm a bit odd (for many reasons <lol>), but I make no apologies for my hobby. Being part of an active AFOL group, like Brickish, where other adults share the same interests is a great way of getting over any lingering embarrassment :-)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

sorry its just your in your 30s im still in school, sadly i live in a small town full of hicks so thers no group of actual lego fans just people who suck at building ,thankfully theres the internet

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sorry to hear that doctorwho/. Try to keep with it, eh ?

Quite a few active members of Brickish are women, and they tend to be amongst the more creative builders in my experience.

Ian

Gravatar
By in United States,

oh and Dr S and bluemoose do either one of you like batman? that and city are my favs (but i do like exo-force, marsmission, racers, and aqua radiers but there not as good)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

well lego isnt just for guys ,thats why they had harry potter lego, is there a brickish association in canada or somthing like that

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not a huge fan of the Batman sets, but I do like the figs a lot.

For Canadian "LEGO User Groups", check out -
http://www.lugnet.com/map/ca/
I'm not sure how up to date it is.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Same here doctowho/, I also get made fun of for playing with legos, because people say its for nerds! Which is NOT true!

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I dunno what people really think of my lego collection, but I do know that they like playing with the train, and I usually have to clean up the city after my friends leave their trail of destruction.

Gravatar
By ,

Mods i have to ask you a question for your opinion. which is a better buy the temple of the crystal skull of the jungle cutter?
The reason i ask this question is because I am confused to know which is a better buy.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Judge it in playability and what you get out of it. The jungle cutter can really only be used for cutting Jungles, however the Temple is a place where people can return to it and steal more jewels or whatever. If you were asking me then I would say the temple. Agree?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have both of them and I would definately pick the Temple of the Crystal Skull!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ya, me too! Plus, if your into star wars, you could use the temple for the new jedi temple that luke skywalker finds on yavin 4.

Gravatar
By ,

Hmmmm... maybe i should get the temple of the crystal skull! Maybe who knows i could probably build something out of that set and also using that cool base plate! Thanks

Sev15

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Good point Leggodt! See how versitile a simple lego Temple is? That would be what i would use it for, Leggodt.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I just got the temple of the crystal skull! Hey mods, have you had a lot of work to do so far?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Yeah, and do you all moderate reveiws? I just typed one up and I'm wondering how long it will take for it to appear.

Gravatar
By ,

Mods i have a question do you have a sister? Cause i know i have one and shes very very annoying and such a no minded girl *rolls eyes*

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

lego master - 'temple' or 'cutter' ? They are very different sets, but having built both, the temple is a much more interactive set; much more 'playability' IMHO. But it is a lot more expensive. From a 'parts monkey' perspective, the 'cutter' set has a lot of interesting pieces. But I'd have to go with 'temple' as the better set overall, and also a good selection of pieces for building other things - leggodt's Jedi Temple is a good idea.

fighter95 - workload ? I'd say it's been 'average'; more than I was expecting, but less than I'm used to (that isn't a challenge !)

Luke Skytalker - do we all moderate reviews ? Yes; how long it takes for a review to get approved is a matter of luck, depending on when we're on line. We all do this in our spare time as volunteer work - it might get approved within seconds, or it might take upto 12 hours or even more. It's early Sunday morning here in the UK & I've just approved a bunch of them ... BTW, I agree - I bought two of them, but only because they were half price !

legomaster - I have an older sister, but we've always got on very well.

Ian

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank you, bluemoose! I'm hoping that we can be acquaintances! Is that okay, bluemoose? It just seems that befriending a moderator would be really cool. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Moderators aren't allowed to make friends - it's against Union rules. :-)

Re' the IJ sets, I haven't bought the temple and have no immediate plans to do so on the basis that I'd only strip it for the parts - I do however have the Jungle Cutter and I think it's great, I enjoyed the build.

Dr. S.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I got the Jungle Cutter, River Chase, and the Temple of the crystal Skull. I still yet have to build the jungle cutter and the temple! :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

Um whats a moderator?

Gravatar
By in United States,

it's some that approves and disapproves reviews and comments.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh well in that case welcome new moderators! :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey! i wrote a review yesterday and it didn't get posted! whats up with that?!? >:(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Boba Fett Jr: Could have been one of many reasons. Many we moderate contain either appalling spelling, lack any sort of objectivity, sometimes use inappropriate language and often have a review score inconsistent with the review text. Hope this helps.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Okay, I just rewrote my review so please post it this time. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Much better BFJ. Much better :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank you Martin and I'm sorry for the outburst. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just wanted to say hi and welcome to the new moderators, look forward to working with you :)

P.S Huw thanks for the mention mate :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

BLADE! I've seen that username before! You're a top reviewer, and now you're a moderator. Nice job,.....mate! hehehehehehe :D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You're a mod, Blade? I didn't know that, are you new? You didn't get mentioned in the new moderator post.
And Leggodt, i just realised you're a TOP 10 REVIEWER! Congratulations!

Gravatar
By in United States,

He's talking about the all time top reviewer's board, skytalker. And, thanks legoguysw! :D OH! And that reminds me, new moderators, how do you determine who gets on the this month's and the top reviewer's board?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The ranking process is automated. We decide if individual reviews get accepted into the system, but the ranking process is automated based on factors that I'm not going to go into. Manually ranking reviewers would be a very manually intensive process & but one that can easily be automated.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Why do my comments keep getting deleted? I'm sure they were on topic, or at least relevant to what the moderators were saying.

Also, how do the reveiws get to the top or bottom of the page? Obviously the buttons say yes or no, but what if you get 15 that say yes and one that says no, how would that compare to a reveiw where five say yes and none say no? who would go ahead?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

"Why do my comments keep getting deleted?" - probably because one of the staff thinks they have drifted too far from the topic, or it contributes little new to the discussion of the original topic.

"who would go ahead?" - not sure I fully understand what you're asking, but we aren't going to discuss the details for very obvious reasons (to stop people trying to manipulate the system to their own benefit).

But can we please get back on topic ? "New Mods" ...

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Sorry Bluemoose, I just wasn't sure of the system.

Anyway, welcome. Does this mean that Huw has some spare time on his hands? Would like to see a little bug fixed, though. And if you have the time I would like links that people post to be accessable by clicking, instead of copying and pasting.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That's a good idea; however Huw's got a number of issues he needs to deal with related to the site at the moment, but I've asked him to look into it if he gets a chance. No promises that anything will come of it though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm getting a little variety short. Why is the only moderator that usually posts comments you, bluemoose? Does anybody else like to talk to us. Is that another Union rule?!? >:(

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Moderators also have 'real' jobs, otherwise they wouldn't be able to afford all the new LEGO sets that are being released. This means that we are not sitting in front of our computers 24/7.

In my own case, I am away from home for weeks on end busy installing new communications systems into the nation's air traffic control towers and radar centres. I do try to check on Brickset most days though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I replyed before just as the site crashed so my old comment isn't here.

@ Leggodt: Yes I am a mod, and yes a top 10 reviewer, Thanks guys.

Top of the month is who has posted the most reviews in the last 30 days. All time is just most reviews.

@ legoguysw: yes resonably new, was hired to do a few special projects arround the place by Huw, Thanks.

@ Luke Skytalker: Rank is simple Take the numbers eg 1/1 or 6/6 = 100% go to the top and so on till 0/15 at the bottom which will be deleated as it is trash.
I will be writing a guide on what makes good reviews to help give some clearer guidelines as some of the stuff i have been seeing and finding is horrible.
P.S please feel free everyone to check out my reviews and rate them, if there is a way i can make them better email me.

I like to reply to members and help them out, as Grahame mentioned, we have jobs, lives and do this to help out.

For any further questions please email me or one of the other mods. Now back On Topic, Welcome to all new mods. :)

Gravatar
By ,

Are all the moderators close friends of Huw?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yes, I suspect we are all good friends of Huw's. I know that Bluemoose, Dr S and myself are all active AFOLs in the UK. And Jimmy, Huw has a full-time day job, as do all the Mods here (I think). As Grahame said, how do you think we afford to buy all the LEGO we have? :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, what is Huw's 'daytime' job then, Martin? You failed to mention that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Are you guys allowed to delete our accounts?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

At the moment I am the only one that can disable accounts and I'll do so if other moderators think it necessary.

Gravatar
By in United States,

oh, thanks Huw!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

leggodt -- my day job is as an IS analyst/developer for the UK's air navigation service provider. Which is a co-incidence because Grahame works for New Zealand's air navigation service provider but we didn't know that when we first 'met'.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awesome job Huw! Must be fun!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh ya, that's right! Huw, you told me that before; I just forgot. hehehehe :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i own a lego set
