Series 5 minifigs revealed in Portugal

Posted by ,

It looks as if this weekend's Arte em Peças event in Portugal was a success, judging by the pictures in their flickr stream.

Of particular interest to us are the excellent photos of the series 5 minifigs, both assembled and disassembled, and the Technic Unimog. See them all here.

Although this series looks like it could be the best yet, I have to say I'm getting a bit 'minifig weary'. It's such a nuisance having to track them all down and worry whether you'll get them all. Just when you've completed one series, another one comes along...

By in United States,

These look amazing! Are they still only identified by the raised bumps?

Gravatar
By in Ukraine,

Well if you don't like them, THEN JUST DON'T BUY THEM, it's as simple as that, right?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the Palace guard and perhaps the gladiator are the new Spartans. I really like the guards torso and face print.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm looking forward to going through it all again and adding these to my collection. As many Royal Guards as I can find me thinks!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Dwarf and Gladiator have SO much detail in them! Printed everything!

The Gangsters vilon case is a bit disapointing though....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, this series does look like the best yet! What are they going to call the Jane Goodall fig? "Monkey Researcher". :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

I actually like the hunt. :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's not really that hard to get them anymore. Since series three I have seen plenty of collectable minifigs available.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Did anybody notice that the boxer has a double-sided face? Really good deal, IMO.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really can't get over the decision to make blue the series 5 packet colour. It doesn't make any sense considering purple and red haven't been used yet. I would understand if they'd used all the colours and had to recycle old ones but when 2 perfecly good colours haven't been used it seems very strange.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This series does look like the best yet! Top notch figures!

By the way, would anyone in Germany be willing to ship me over the Hero Factory 3.0 figures? Fully paid of course.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Some of them are good, but a few of them are a big boring compared to the previous series

Gravatar
By in United States,

Brix, I feel your pain. That has been my complaint since series 3... I was expecting primary colors first.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am still only missing the Hockey Player from Series 4..have everyone else. I think though Series 5 might be my last one, UNLESS series 6 has some really sweet figures in it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think they ALL look really great. Thanks for the pictures, Huw! I agree with you that having so many of these coming out with so little time between each release is an issue. TLG has really been upping its ante the past couple years....

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^ Hockey player is easy to feel in the package, feel for the armor and the skate, although you need to actually find the packages. I found a few extra's I decided to buy when looking for hazmat guys.. You also cannot really trust the dots anymore.. I tried while looking for hazmat guys and wound up with three extra football (soccer) players and only one hazmat guy.. you need to feel the packs, which looks crazy when standing in front of a TRU service desk (where my TRU's packs are located) but it is worth it to get the figs you want.

I would say that the figs would get tiresome if they were not out of a while. I have my fill of Series 4 (but series 3 are still around..mostly because they are dogs compared to the other sets IMO) got a few sets and also got a few extra Hazmat guys at a TRU.. The TRU by me has three boxes whereas another TRU by me has none.. The distribution is kinda spotty still... A Walmart had a whole display I ran into when they apparently first got them, but apparently someone went and cleaned them out and they had none when I went back 2 weeks later... Again distribution seems to be bad still. OR people still insist on buying an entire box when they see them.
I think the minifigs would be crazy if the distribution numbers were lower then maybe, but that obviously is not the case (seeing Series 3 and 4 left after 5 has been announced) I think Lego should almost start considering, at 3 dollars per, to ditch the rarity and put little windows in the packs to show what you are getting OR charge extra for a chance for people to buy an entire set off of the bat for those that only want a set.

By in United Kingdom,

is anyone else getting sick of 'extreme' sports people in every range (skateboarders/surfers/etc) im guessing its cheaper and easier to reuse the peices, but what use are they?
also the current china/nonchina debate really annoys me, the peices are still LEGO regardless of where they produced, to be honest, im gonna predict that going forward more and more peices in sets (especially the large preformed peices) will be chinese. As a buyer id rather the sets get cheaper.
Minifigs are great, im an AFOL (was 40, yes 40 last week. dont laugh) and i love them, i dodnt have the patience to hunt them down, so on series 1 to 4 have just bought a full box. BUT think i may play along this time.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There are also detailed photos of the entire build of the Unimog, including all the new parts. It looks ace.

By in United States,

^ Yeah I can do without the Skater and snowboarder in every series.... Getting old fast.... I guess they cannot do a bmx'er as the bike would show in the package to well...lol
I am actually waiting for a tourist fig (guy with shorts on a hawaiian shirt and a camera)
I do like the guys in suits motif and at least they wait a few series before putting another clown (which is vastly different than the series 1) into the Series 5 set.. All in all I like the Series 5, it is definitely better than series 3, and maybe better than 4.. ok, as good as anyway.
Although I am surprised the have no doctor yet (I mean one that is not a crazy scientist) a fig in 'scrubs' with a mask on maybe... or even a 'patient'... a guy in a gown, No golfer yet, American Football player, etc.. they have lots of ideas to make still.. maybe they can leave out a snowboarder or skateboarder for once...

I do know I want the 'zilla suit guy and the gangster guy.. The series five have a lot more figs I actually 'want' instead of 'need'.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^ That unimog looks awesome.. it also looks like it is 1/10th or 1/12th scale I can see why it sounds like the price will be around 200-250 USD for it

Gravatar
By in United States,

am i mistaken or was the gangster supposed to come with the tommy gun and not pistol?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I find it interesting that the latest issue of GameInformer not only has Collectible Minifigure news but they also state that series 5 is supposed to release July 20th. Was this widely known? I thought I kept my ear to the rail on this stuff and it caught me off guard.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ThisIsMyCup all the pics I've seen are of him with the pistol.

@beefygrefe thats great news if true! I was just wondering yesterday about series 5, and decided to look it up to find any news (found nothing new) then today we get this update on the front page! If its released july that's awesome, I heard it was no till august.

And the boxer with the double sided face is sweet!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would be much more interested in these if only one series was released per year, a la modular buildings and creator houses. With 32 figures per year at USD $3/each before tax, it's easy to rack up well over $100 just to collect them all. I'd rather spend that money on full-fledged building sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Beefygrefe yeah i saw that too very strange. And these figs look great but i have to catch up because i have 4 missing from series 3 and 9 missing from series 4! But lego should just give up trying to hide what minifigs are in the bag and stop raising prices!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm still seeing loads of series4 in the suppliers near me. Makes me regret the panic buying at the beginning and the ebay buying. If series5 distribution is the same, it seems they will be plenty of time/opportunity to pick up the ones that I want.

Gravatar
By in United States,

While i will buy the entire set, and dups of dwarf fighter. The set good, but only average. I thought it was a mistake for them to put 2 monsters in ser 4 (wolfman & Frankie) and none in this set.

And as far as hard to get??? ser 3,4,5, production has likely tripled over Series 1. Nice to see the Series 1 gaining some respect on ebay (zombie $15-18). I would like to see them pay homage to some older themes.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm still actually not all that impressed with series 5. That being said, I would have purchased this series regardless if it wasn't for two factors.

(1) To me the quality of the mini-figures from series 4 seem inferior compared to series 1 to 3. The hair pieces are difficult to fit onto the MF heads. I did not have this problem with previous series'. The hands are difficult to move. I've had this problem with series 3 too but not series 1 and 2. The mini-figures are very loose. It seems as though they have been heavily played with even though they are brand new. Possibly from everyone feeling the bags in store? I'm not sure. There are other quality control problems. With the series 3 tribal chief MF I got the pilot's head. In series 4, one of the figure skater's came with no skirt.

(2) On top of what I perceive as declining quality the price keeps going up. I bought series 1 and 2 for $2.86 CDN at Wal-Mart. I paid $2.99 CDN for series 3 while I shelled out $3.26 CDN for series 4 (all at Wal-Mart). The Wal-Mart prices are good deals since everywhere else sells them for more but with series 4 not meeting my quality expectations it's hard to stomach price increases.

On top of that the MF are coming out way too fast. Three sets, maybe four in one year is a bit too much for me. I might give a future series of collectible MF a shot but for the near future I won't be buying them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

At first, I wasn't thrilled with the selection for Series 5, but every time a new set of high-quality images appear, my interest grows. Originally, I thought this series would be like Series 1 where I only bought half at most with only a few duplicates. Now, I plan to track down the majority, though it won't be like Series 3 and 4 where I collected all of them.

As for quality, my perception may be wrong, but I feel that the minifigures I've acquires have increased in quality with each series. 1 and 2 had loose legs, and the printing on legs seemed the worst on those figures as well. Series 3 and 4 no longer had loose legs and all printing appeared better placed on the various pieces. Although I have heard of plenty of instances of minifigures missing parts, I have never encountered this issue myself nor have I ever opened a pack to find broken parts (a fear I initially had when I heard the figures were manufactured in China with inferior plastic).

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I really want the small clown (bowler cap!).
@brix-I agree with you. Purple and red are great colours, right?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@: voypro : no monsters but there is an ax man! You can have the ax man chase the werewolf and Frankenstein around!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

People keep complaining about the gangster's violin case. Wouldn't it be possible for a gangster to store his tommygun inside the case rather than a violin? That was my first thought when I saw this figure a LONG time ago! Makes sense to me!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Am I the only one who thinks that the "violin case" is actualy a guitar case? That would be onr BIG violin. Then again, It'd be one small guitar.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I like the figures, but I agree the whole process is tiresome.

The worst part is the hunt. If you had barcodes on the figures, fine. But increasing the random-chance aspects of it (because, let's be honest, the bumps aren't exactly 100%. I've gotten close, but there's always one or two that don't quite match up, and then you have to hunt) -- it's annoying. It's a transparent cash-grab, and it does bother me.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I went on Brickapedia and the Release Date for Series 5 says August 2011, but Since Series 4 came so fast after Series 3 Im figuring It will come sooner, does anybody have info on this or an actual release date for these, like when LEGO actually ships them out to the stores, I mean how did they get here?

Gravatar
By in United States,

First off, i just want to say I love these figs!! Second, (not talking to anyone in particular and not meaning to be offensive), but c'mon! Stop saying that this will be your last series because we all know that when series 6,7,8,etc. come out and there are awesome figs, you are going to be eating your words. (Once again, that was not meant for anyone in particular and I did not mean to be offensive at all.)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Zordboy: I understand what you mean, feeling up packages looks a bizarre to store employees that watch you so that can be difficult, but the bumps are not there for the benefit of the buyers. No Offense, but the last time I checked Lego was in the process of making money, so yes it is a blatant cash grab....
Not to mention the whole idea of them being meant as a 'mystery' pack, not a 'Hey see what is in the' pack. Especially since all the bar codes did was allow hordes of resellers to go buy ONLY the Spartans and cause people without the codes, or even with the codes, the inability to get a complete set.( Yes, I am sure a few 'hobbyists' were in it to get a Spartan Army, but I also saw WAY too many people trying to sell 10-20 Spartans on eBay)

That being said, people obviously keep buying them. Until this stops then Lego can do what they want.
I would say, and many others have said on this board, what Lego should do is basically charge a bit more for the chance to buy a complete set. This should stop the hordes of resellers which still manage to go to some stores to buy boxes so sell for a wild eBay profit of like 50 cents per package (when you factor in all of eBay fees)
OR basically ditch the whole rarity and have them all 'common' and have a transparent window in the package to see the fig to be bought.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@beefygrefe: I have read that Game informer article too. It was article #20 on the page. It did not specify a release date. It just said that series 5 would be released this month.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@spency13 LOL you're so right...

I disagree with people saying you look weird feeling up the bags, (well you kinda do) but my I was at a TRU with a non AFOL friend and he was waiting for me to feel up the bags. In an attempt to embarrass me he asked the employee if a lot of people do what I was doing, and the employee said "actually yea, most people do" and at another TRU I mentioned to the employee that I think the CMF are more popular amongst adults, and she agreed, she said mainly adults buy them, and rarely do kids come by to get them. Basically after that I didn't feel so bad feeling up the bags, because as it turns out the minority of people DONT feel the bags.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ok, I retract my earlier statement. It does say in the Game Informer mag that the release date of series 5 is July 20th. Although there is no mention of them on the July Lego store calendar.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Last week I came across a fresh box of series two figures next to three boxes of series four figures at a local store. Must have found them hiding under something out the back.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Oh one more thing just to comment on something I just read further up the board, it may be different in NZ but resellers are charging up to $18.00 for some of the rarer figures, they cost $5.00 new in stores but people are buying them for alot more. I sell my double ups for between $6.00 and $10.00 depending on the rarity as I see it. People will pay a bit more to get what they need and avoid "the hunt".

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

I want the Gorn (lizard guy). There's a great Star Trek themed MOC waiting for that figure.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@starfire2 - quote "... the release date of series 5 is July 20th". We'd heard that the 'official' date was around the middle of July (but the exact date will probably vary from country-to-country); for all the previous releases, they've actually started appearing ~month before that, so we'd expect to see them pop up somewhere very soon indeed ...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I find the dot patterns don't work. My advice would be not to bother with the dots. Feeling the bags works much more well. Every time I've felt the bag and thought a particular mini-figure was inside, I'd end up getting that specific mini-figure I thought I was getting. The "feel the bag" method only failed me once whereas the dot method fails me half the time.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I love the boxer even more now, with that alternate bruised face, I even kinda feel sorry for him!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@the_real_indy: Huw has to keep up with the minifig galleries.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I think the lumberjack is Canadian, eh.

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

I wish, LEGO will do minfigs series wherein there will be more Female than male or a Female to Male reverse ratio. That would be different.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Are there any pictures of the guitar/violin case open?

Gravatar
By in United States,

There's only a few out of Series 5 that I want then compared to Series 4 or 3 where I was able to finally pick up multiples from a local store.

Gravatar
By in United States,

ANOTHER snowboarder? Besides the snowboarder and the gymnastics teacher (who looks JUST like the singer in series 2) series 5 looks awesome! I think the gladiator and the boxer will be the most wanted and rare.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

The gladiator helmet looks amazing, somehow I thought the grill at the front was actually printed on the face from previous images. It should be easy to find gladiators by the feel-method because the helmet looks huge. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Some fantastic minifigs in this series!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love being an adult and complaining about lego toys... I'm not too crazy about another snowboarder. The aerobics instructor, while a good idea, for some reason doesn't interest me. They should have at least done the pop singer hair in a different color. Also not too crazy about the zoo-keeper or her unposable monkey. If they didn't want to throw in one of the superior existing monkeys, they should have given her a different smaller animal or two instead of a monkey and a banana. A hawk would have been great and very useful.

I like the rest, however, I wish the mobster had a tommy gun and the lumberjack had a beard.

I still can't wait to get all of these and I hope to see collectable minifig releases continue for a long time. There are still hundreds of good ideas out there that haven't been done yet.

Gravatar
By in Ukraine,

@LEGOlas1, HUW

RE: "Huw has to keep up with the minifig galleries."

Yes, but the Official Lego Website puts out excellent animated images of all of these figs... So is it really necessary for HUW to photograph them all? If he wants photos of the real plastic figs, then he can always just arrange to take photographs of someone else's figs at a regional convention or something!

The bigger question is "Why would you buy a LEGO set (or even just a minifig) you do not like?"

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Woo. And I saw series 3 and 4 figs still available this weekend... Can't wait to get these as well.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@mo123567 - I personally like the unposable monkey and think that it will be better for smaller MOCs than the posable ones. It is nice to have a variety.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I like the british guard, and after seeing the Canadian Mountie on Brickarms I think they should make one for the next series, I think it would be cool, and maybe an FBI agent or CSI agent.

Gravatar
By in Malaysia,

Yes, it's tiring, but that's all part of the thrill. Of course, one could easily just get it done and dealt with by paying extra to get them all off ebay or bricklink. I was one of those desperately hunting when it all started, as back then they were actually limited in production, but then TLG started releasing more of the series at an even more faster pace and upped their production, so the market now is literally saturated with these guys, so I'm not too worried and have taken a more laid back approach now. But those days sure was crazy when I was literally hopping toystores to toystores in a matter of minutes!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@QL "maybe you can incorperate some system to automaticly add the EB reviews...".

Automatically adding them isn't possible but many of the EB Reviewers' Academy teachers have special access to Brickset to enable them to add them. I suspect these two will be added shortly.

Gravatar
By in Israel,

Is Series 5 the last series, or are there going to be more?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Be-Burger: there was an article in brickjournal saying that they had finished series 6 when series 3 came out and they were able to confirm that they will go, at least, through series 8 now. Can't remember what issue of BJ it was though...maybe 14?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@the_real_indy: He said he doesn't like the hunt, not the figs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think one series per year would have been enough, don't ya think?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ sinfanti - Gorn, That is a stretch, but I love it. If we are reaching for Star Trek minifigs for modding than you have the Sherlock Holmes Data. Zarabeth from ST TOS "All of our Yesterdays" in two costumes no less cave girl and Eskimo. A Gangster from the ST TOS "Piece of the Action"...and Chekota from that boxing Voyager Episode. Ahh! the Geek mind, truly a fertile field.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@ Dash Justice - I dont think so, 1 Series per year seems way to long, I already bought All of Series 4 and cant wait for 5, im always checking for release dates and always checking at my store, I'm mad there not releasing them sooner because I want them so bad, keep em coming! and bring on a MOUNTIE PLEASE!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A lot of these seem quite bulky (gladiator helmet, eskimo hood, egyptian dress & hair, dinosaur suit, guards bearskin hat, cavegirl club & hair, dwarf helmet & beard, gangsters violin case, boxers helmet & gloves) HOPEfully making them easier to identify when feeling the packs. Either that or its going to cause a lot of confusion :P

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Like the lumberjacks arm printing and his Axe. There are a few that I am not overly keen on, but will likely get 2 of each anyway, one to collect and one of each for my son to play with.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Thomson & Thompson: Is your want of the bowler hat a reference to your username?

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Definitely the series with the most "must have" figures!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@beefygrefe- Series 8? Wow. I wonder when that will come out.
@LEGOlas1-No, but good point. Now I will have to make Thomson & Thompson minifigs!
@JDLego-a Mountie would be cool.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Thompson & Thompson-http://www.brickrepublic.com/servlet/the-730/Brick-Republic-Custom-Minifigure/Detail
Here is a Link to BrickRepublic which is a Reseller for Brickarms, they sell most of the stuff that Brickarms has on there website, including collectable Minifigures and Lego. This is the Picture of the Mountie I was talking about, so I hope Lego includes a Remake of this in future Collectable Minfigure Series.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I must admit, the novelty of Collectable Minifigures has worn off. I'd rather save up for something better.
