Medieval Market Village set for January 2009 release

Medieval Market Village

Today, at the Great Western LEGO show at the STEAM museum in Swindon, Jan and Tormod from LEGO revealed a new Castle set for 2009!

It looks excellent -- lots of interesting features, great colours, cows, fish, the return of the Scala roast turkey body and so on!

LEGO's description reads as follows:

This classic medieval village with marketplace is a perfect match for any LEGO Castle. Full of authentic features, fun accessories and all-new animals to expand and enhance your kingdom; it includes two complete buildings with detailed interiors like a blacksmith's shop with waterwheel-driven hammer, a food stand, tree, table, cart, cows, horse, chicken, rooster, duck, peasants, knights, rare elements and colors, and more!

  • Includes 8 minifigures: blacksmith, 2 soldiers, 2 male peasants, 2 female peasants and a boy minifigure!
  • Play inside! The 2 two-story buildings feature a hinge system that allows you to open and close them as you wish!
  • The yellow building contains the stables, blacksmiths shop and his home upstairs! Help the blacksmith forge the swords with the working water powered trip hammer! Don't forget to close the stable gates and feed the horse some carrots!
  • Blacksmith's home features pictures on the walls, opening windows, table and fireplace!
  • The classically European styled blue building features a cozy tavern on the first floor and welcoming bedroom on the top floor!
  • Lots of authentic touches: fireplaces in the bedrooms, pictures on the walls, dressing tables, working doors and windows and other interior details!
  • The soldiers and peasants alike shop and eat in the marketplace filled with baskets of fish, apples and flowers. Sit at the table for a meal of ale, cheese and whole turkey but stay out of the way of the soldiers carrying the king's treasure!
  • Buildings measure over 7.5" tall and over 9" long when open wide!

It's perhaps a little pricey at £85 in the UK, but judging from the reaction on Saturday, it's sure to be a hit.

There are more pictures at Brothers Brick.

By in United States,

the food items and the peasants look cool so do the cows

Gravatar
By in United States,

they also seem to use that new teloscope piece a lot

Gravatar
By ,

This set is great, but I don't see how it is 1600 pieces. I love the new chicken piece, and the wheel. Lots of cool minifigs too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks for giving me acknowledgments... :P

Looks cool....I'm getting it!

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

This looks cool, I only dislikes some minifigs. This maybe will be my favorite 07-09 Castle set because have no fight and it is like a village, like in some older castle sets. And the houses looks cool too.

Gravatar
By ,

I think the figs look great, I'm not a big fan of castle but this set looks like a must buy.

Gravatar
By in Honduras,

I don’t have any castle sets, but I agree with legolegend88, it is a must buy.
I don’t know what I am going to de next year, to many sets to bay and not enough money.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The last castle set I got was in the 80s, but this one is just too fantastic looking to pass up. I actually think that it will be not to difficult too aesthetically change a few things and have it fit in with an off shore pirate village/market.

Gravatar
By in Malaysia,

Finally! I have longed a market square without MOCing (not enough decent bricks) and its always easier to buy something that has instructions! Also, this set used the new type realistic whole chicken. And also the sets have ultra-realistic Tudor facade buildings! A tavern! A tavern is a must have, where else your minifigs would go on a sober night? A must buy! Oh yeah! Sorry I am too excited! Pfft!

Gravatar
By in United States,

amazing but since a 500$ set has 5200 pieces this will cost like 150 dollars

Gravatar
By in United States,

As I said when this was brought up in the new power miners pics article,

LOOK AT ALL OF THE FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I apologize for the double post, but I accidently hit the submit button.
The fish look new, I love the way that a 1x1 yellow slope was used as cheese (why didn't I think of that?),there are new minifig heads and bodies, cows (probably the same mold as the farm ones), and severeal kinds of birds made in a way eerily similar to the Penguin's penguins.
This is the coolest castle set I have seen in a long long time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have to agree about all that food. plus i like the new bulls ,turkey, carrot, fish, and apples.hopefully it will have an economic price like the taj mahal.Altohugh what this set need are some trolls to ransack it

Gravatar
By in United States,

sorry for the double post but at the brothers brick link,it has the prices of the set
US 99.99 usd
UK 84.99 euros
Australia and canada $149.99

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope that those prices are true. Thats a pretty good price for a set that large isn't it?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I have got to get this set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's like the Cafe Corner but in a Castle theme. If it's really 99.99 USD as water jedi 17 said, I'll probably pick one up.

Gravatar
By in United States,

AM I crazy, but are those GOLD pieces in the tavern by the windows?

Also notice the 09 pirates telescope seems to be used as a support a lot, and the torches are also sextants.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

this is soo crazy awesome looking even though I'm not that big a castle fan I want to get this

Gravatar
By ,

Did you see the fish thats awesome so many accesories.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, this looks amazing. I'm definitely getting it!

Gravatar
By ,

It doesn't look like 1600 pieces does it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This could be one of those sets that could be multithemed. You could make a village with Castle sets or use this as a historical part of your town.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

kings castle siege has almost 1000 pieces, and for me this set looks even bigger. you must think about that the walls are completely brick-built without bigger pieces and that there are a lot of accesoires.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great price, parts, figs, and design! What more could a LEGO fan ask for??

Gravatar
By in United States,

I saw this today at NW Brickcon, They had it displayed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I saw it a few minutes ago on BrickShelf. i must say this set looks very very very GOOD.You get 8 minifigs,2 cows,a bird,Agent Trace hair,2 girls, and loads of food.Im gonna have this on my wanted sets list.I also hope LEGO continues like this and hopefully Castle can surive.

Gravatar
By in United States,

cool mini figs, and the fish idea is clever. i might have to get this one.....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hear that? That’s the sound of every AFOLs craziest dreams come true.
I will certainly get this set. Two brown cows, new fish, lots of new telescopes, great new figs (including women, no less), and a duck, what can you not like about this set? Even the price is good! I pray that Lego continues this line of thinking, with more medieval village oriented sets. I can just see a brikwars battle with these buildings.

Gravatar
By in United States,

looks like alot of new pieces

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Huw went down to Steam at Swindon yesterday (Saturday). Brilliant show, I came away inspired. As for 10193 I don't usually like castle sets, but because this one is quite realistic to old town scenes, it will not take much to put it in a modern city display.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

WHOA! This looks very impressive. Can't wait. Those food pieces could prove useful too...

Good day

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Great! A new medieval-themed Town Plan. The best set since 3739. Very good for not adding fighting in it. Can't wait!

@legolegend88:
Australia: $149.99
Canada: $149.99
UK: £84.99
US: $99.99

I don't know what the price will be in the rest of Europe.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can't wait for this castle set becaUSE i'm not a big fan of the others but this set finally has a medievil town! I am definitely going to get this castle set if it's the only one.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks like lego is bringing castle back in a big way. All the new food elements look great and it's nice to have a more 'normal' town instead of a battle scene. The colours are nice and the waterwheel looks good. Too bad it does't look like it will come with a baseplate of some description, a cobble printed baseplate would be cool.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The chicken/turkey looks awesome! Minifgures.... awesomer! (Cows!!!) But most of all... thtose buildings are amazing! I'm adding this to my wanted list!

Gravatar
By ,

What were the other sets at the show any star wars? And by the wat maybe because this set has so much food pieces I'm saying that might be 1600 pieces.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is amazing. The uK price of £84.99 is amazing. It better not go up. I was goign to get the RGS with my own money at chistmas, but this set has replaced that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

same here. now i can have some older building to add to my town

Gravatar
By in United States,

Saw this over at Brothers Brick and couldn't believe my eyes! I am not a Castle fan (more of a City fan) but this set would fit right in with a City scene. It is beautiful. The colors are not prime colors such as red, white, blue and yellow. The new pieces are cool. The new figs are really sweet and the overall look of this set is striking.

I agree with peppermintmecha, a cobblestoned baseplate would be an amazing add on. I hope this set does well enough for LEGO to consider more like it from other themes like the upcoming Pirates theme. When is the 3rd Modular LEGO City set coming out? The designer of Cafe Corner and Green Grocer stated in Brickjournal that there would be 3 sets from his new modular theme (not including Market Street which was a fan designed set from the Factory theme).

Anyway, great job LEGO! Now it is up to AFOLs and TFOLs to go out and buy this set so there can be more like it!

How much longer before we see someone's version of this set online?!?!?

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

This is a great set but I probaly never get as don't collect castle sets but never say never. On another note the cows look too duplo to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ Brickmaster^, you could replace these cows with Brickforge cows, BF cows have angles much like horses. And they have udders!

Gravatar
By in Finland,

This definitely looks like an *excellent* set, particularly because there are very few large specialized pieces. I am not a fan of the Castle series, but I'll get this set because the houses are perfect for the historical downtown of a northern european city.

One more reason for me to truly appreciate this set is the use of the (very old) Legoland idea of making the houses "foldable". You can choose to fold/close them, thus getting a 4-walled tiny cottage, or otherwise leave them open to easily reach the inside. For reasons unknown, despite the fact I'm an AFOL I do prefer "open" buildings to closed-type ones.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i was there! looks like a fantastic set, anyone know the price?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yay! A chicken/turkey body! And cows! I am so getting this set instantly!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not really my type of set altough i like the new element and the creatively designed birds. Most likely it may cme out in the holiday season as it looks like this set is ready to be on the market
@ everybody asking for the price:two members have already posted the prices so please look at the comments.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

legoville410, was your last post in reply to mine? If so then you get 600 more pieces for £5 more!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It is part of the 'January' release from LEGO. I handled it yesterday, and again today, and it's lovely, but I won't be buying one ... I'll be buying at least two :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

A perfect set for all castle fans!I love the new minifigs! The turkey looks cool, and it does look like a town!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree and it is somewhat what lego needs to do to revive the castle theme. I mean this is the best castle set since the 90's!Plus the new figs with the peasent attire is exactly what I wanted along with new bulls, features, and food. I mean that's three times as good!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

At last, something for my pirates and trolls to plunder the bajeezus out of.HAHAHAHA! Seriously, though, I WILL get that at some point next year. (By the way, brankell5566, if some of the admin have already handled the model, it's going to be released. I don't see why not. At last, we have peasants again!)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to add that I just thought of something... Lego seems to be bringing back the classic themes in a big way. I am talking retro reformation on a grand scale. They announced new Pirates a while back, now this, who knows what next. They're up to summat, I tell you what, son.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree, Mr. F, but Lego needs to bring back the town sets of the early 90s because it is one of the best periods of Lego sets ever.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it. I wish they would do something like this for Star Wars sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This set looks really great. I got hooked on these three weeks ago and now I can not wait for January. This will make a fine endto my collection. Or a new start!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I would love to get this, but it's probably too much.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I agree with Trandoshan cost a ton

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

As this set is a special edition of the Lego S@H, it will not come to Brazil, probably. But I want to get another way to buy it. I never liked and I still don't liking the current Castle theme (2007-2008...), except for this set.
It is really the only set that was interesting in this new castle theme to me, and it is because it have at least a resemblance to the classic times.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow. Allover beauty. If I can, I'll buy 2. But that probably won't happen...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I agree to to what Gus263 said this is the one and only castle set I will like (mabye) :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

They need a robin hood in it lol

Gravatar
By in United States,

85 pounds that would be $129.99 in US currency and $149.99 in canadian?

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

The availability and price of this set in my country still unknown. But anyways I hope that I will get it, even with other 09' sets in my wanted list.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm torn between this and the star wars sets coming out at that time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree with gus263 on the fact that this is the only castle set I like.

Gravatar
By ,

Actually nmurray2 84.99 UK is 149.99 USD which makes the price 1.5 times what the US price is (Canadians have it the same as Brits as well). So Americans have it best by far.

Gravatar
By in United States,

so I could buy extras, sell them online to people in canada for slightly more, and we both'd be better off? that makes me like this set even more

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've got to get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

After the large castle last year being my first and (I assumed last as I saw the rest of the lineup for this year) last castle set, this one will probably make it into my collection too.

Very good parts for the money!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am just too excited about this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I so want this!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Finally: A castle Village.

This would be a great way to build an old-style british country-village style area for Huw's Great Western Lego Train Club or any other European scene, just add cars, modern people and ligting fixtures that are gas or electric looking.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Uhm... so this set is a Shop@Home exclusive? We won't find it in local shops?

That is disappointing news indeed to me.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Let's wait, a lot of "exclusive" sets made it also to local stores in the past.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it a S@H exclusive, or a TRU, Wal-Mart or Target Exclusive?

Gravatar
By in Austria,

S@H, if you trust TLG. But i don't :p

Gravatar
By in United States,

Only $100? Cheap, really.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Remember the old Castle line-up? Well, part of the theme had Robin Hood/Sherwood Forest-type sets. So you could just mix the two things (This set and the sets I was just talking about).

Gravatar
By in United States,

legolegend88:

It is 1600 pieces.

Gravatar
By ,

wow this set looks awesome a town for the castle to protect. but now i cant wait till january lol.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would love Robin Hood sets, jonbuddy. As long as they weren't based off 'Robin Hood Prince of Thieves'.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, that looks pretty cool. :) Certainly a nice addition to the LEGO Castle theme.
God bless,
Crushmaster.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

I think that this set is cool, a good addition, only with few problems (I think that some pieces could be replaced by better parts, but it still a good set). Hope this theme turns into more medieval than fantasy/battle. If I'm right, this is the first set of the theme that don't includes battles!

Gravatar
By in N/A,

This is what I'm buying after christmas(B-day and christmas money). This set looks AWESOME!!!!!!

Gravatar
By ,

this set looks awsome.im defanitly gonna buy one.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

that one male peasant by the stall looks sad

oh this sets ausome im geting one

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This looks very good, and I can't wait til it comes out!

However, I really do not like the lack of a door for the bedroom in the Inn, I also do not like that fact there is no proper door to the blacksmiths and there is no bed in the blacksmiths and there is no bed in the blacksmiths!!

When this set comes out I'll add another baseplate to the blacksmith's and give it a staircase and a door and put a door to the bedroom of the inn.
