Toy Fair report, part 3: Star Wars

Posted by ,

I won't go into a lot of detail about the set names and minifigs because we already know it from the faux-pas at Hamleys, so instead I'll tell you what I thought of them.

The three Planets sets are the same concept as those in series one. The X-Wing looks cool, the Cloud Car is orange, and not red as might have been expected, and the AT-ST is a new design, although similar to old micro-scale ones.

The Malevolence is a long sleek ship, dark blue and grey. I'm not that familiar with the ship, but I'm guessing that it's nothing near minifig scale (a bit like 6211 in that regard). The minifigs all appeared to be recycled Clone Wars ones, so it may not have any unique figs in it. If that's the case I'll probably pass on it.

The striker-class starfighter is a bit strange. It's red and dark red, with wings that can be rotated to be forwards-facing or 90deg. to the fuselage. Saesee Tin's starfighter is similar to other starfighters but with a different cockpit design. The Fury class interceptor is a big black and grey thing with interesting shaped wings that rotate in various places. These four are so-so and if it weren't for the minifigs I'd be happy to pass on them. However things get interesting with the next three...

The Desert Skiff is more substantial than the 2000 one and comes with Scarlacc. Lando looked good, different to the one in Jabba's Sail Barge, and I think Boba may have been slightly different to the last version of him as well.

The Gungan Sub is far far better than the previous effort and features an escape pod that detaches from the back. It comes with 4 figs including Queen Amidala. We have waited 13 years for Queen Amidala and I tell you, it was worth the wait! She is stunning! She has a custom-moulded skirt piece, not the usual 2x2x2 slope, white head and ceremonial headgear, exactly as she appears in this image as Wookiepedia. I can't stress enough how excellent she is!

But it gets better: Jabba's Palace. Yes it will cost £120 (or £150 in Hamleys :-) ) but it is fantastic and actually looks like a proper, solid building. I think Jabba is the same mould as used before but he's a different shade of green, possibly the olive green we've seen in the Dino sets, and also finely printed. Salacious Crumb was small but perfectly formed and printed and the other minifigs were all absolutely stunning. So, well worth the asking price, IMO!

Year on year LEGO push the boundaries with the SW minfigs, they just keep getting better and better!

Wow! These all sound amazing! If amidala is as good as you've described then the gungan sub is a must have!!!!!!

By in Ireland,

Finally, Queen Amidala in LEGO form!! I wonder what took them so long, she only appeared in the 3 movies as a main character...

By in Hungary,

What about the Mandalorian starfighter, and Palpatine's arrest scene? They were not exhibited?

On the preliminary photo of the Jabba's set was a mysterious minifigure shade, turned out who was that?

Ps: Sorry, if my english is not fully proper.

What a fantastic trio of reviews there, thanks Huw! Can't wait for the Lord of the Rings sets and all the new Star Wars figs. This year is going to be amazing, expensive, but amazing! Love the news about the Queen Amidala figure, thats enough to give you a semi! You wouldn't think a small plastic figure would be so exciting but it really is!

By in United States,

I remember seeing Jabba's Palace and Gungan Sub come out when I was younger, right at the end of my Lego Club days. Once I started collecting in earnest last year, I was sad to see that A) the minifigs for these sets were yellow, and B) they were rare. Although Jabba's Sail Barge definitely attracts way more interest (and money) I am glad to see them re-making this set. The sub too I have wanted for years, and of course Amidala needed to be a minifig. I am debating buying the rest of the sets, I love collecting the ships and the minifigs, but I'm not really familiar with most of the sets coming out this wave. I bought two of the current planets yesterday and put together Sebulba's Podracer. I wasn't planning on collecting the planets, which are just glorified mini-sets in a plastic casing, but they are growing on me. Looking forward to the new wave of SW sets!

What were the figures in the two Old Republic sets? : Fury and Striker Class Interceptor??

By in Sweden,

Here's hoping that skirt piece becomes the de-facto go-to piece for skirts for all sets from now on. The slope is fine and all, but it'd certainly be much nicer with a real skirt piece.

The Malevolence is from the Clone Wars cartoon and it's a ginormous battleship with side-facing EMP canons, and an internal and extensive light-rail system to move people and material around. So yeah, I doubt the toy is anywhere near minifig-scale. :D
I'm pleasantly surprised that Lego is doing The Old Republic sets. I like the look of the Striker Class Interceptor.

I can't wait to see official photos of Jabba's Palace and Gungan Sub. Like everyone else I've been waiting far to long for a Queen Amidala mini figure. She was on the Phantom Menace LEGO logo on those first sets and I just kept waiting and waiting for her to show up in a set. I do wish she came in Theed Palce set, as I have no love for the Gungan sub but will have to buy it just for her.

Jabba's Place, from the leaked photos looks very different then the original and I LOVE that is comes with Boushh disguise Leia and Oola! Now if they would revisit Cloud City for a Bespin Leia which I missed out on in first set.

The only thing I'm interested in right now regarding SW 2012 sets,
would be what the unknown figure in Jabba's Palace was (the one that looked like some hammerhead guy..)
and what the Old Republic minifigures looked like.

Was the trooper from the Striker Fighter some guy named Jacen Malcom, or either way, did he have a helmet?
And was the Sith Lord from the Fury-class Interceptor, Darth Malgus, the version with a respirator or without?
(Something like a facemask)
I'm also wondering about the troopers in the Fury-class Interceptor set.. Did they resemble these?:

Thanks!

Can't wait for the Gungan sub, Desert Skiff and Jabba's Palace. What about 9526, though?

By in United Kingdom,

@Graysmith: the Queen Amidala skirt looks wonderful on her, but I certainly hope it doesn't become the piece used for all dresses. I mean, we don't want every dress to have those big bulbous jewels at the bottom, do we?

Thanks for all the information. I'm very excited about Jabba's palace. Do you know if it has a decent exterior? And as many others have asked, who is the mystery character?

I'd also like to know if it's Padme or Ahsoka (the orange girl) that is in the Malevolence. I'm hoping it's the former!

Thanks again.

By in United Kingdom,

I have seen a few preliminary pictures with Padme in them. I really hope she will be included, otherwise the scene simply is not complete!

By in United States,

@Nightshroud99 the figures in Republic Striker Fighter are: Old Republic Trooper, Satele Shan, and an Astromech droid I believe. and in the Fury Class Interceptor: Darth Malgus, 2 Sith Troopers i think.

By in United States,

Well, the new ones will be great! But I doubt the "reboot sets" will be good enough to re-buy (I already have Jabba's Palace and the add-ons).

By in United States,

The biggest issue I've had with past Padawan Kenobis is that his braid is missing. Please tell me it isn't so with Gungan Sub! But don't lie, if he doesn't have it go ahead and tell me. :P Also, although the preliminary box art for the Malevolence showed Ahsoka, it has the NEW! stamp next to it, and I read elsewhere that it was a Clone Wars Padme.....which would be a new figure...

@Gregorovich: I read on Brickipedia that it was Zuckuss, but that's not always accurate....

Gravatar
By in United States,

The mystery minifig is NOT Leia in her Boussh outfit. The silhouette looks Ithorian... but that doesn't really make any sense for this set at all.

And speaking of minifigs I've been waiting 13 years for... why on earth did they revisit Jabba's palace without factoring in the rancor pit and FINALLY do a rancor minifig?

By in Spain,

Jabba's place, gungan sub and desert skiff are must sets fr e.

Im also interested in the fury class interceptor and sasses tins star fighter sets as well.

I think I'll probably miss out the striker and malevolence as I practically own all the figures in there and my collection is already tight as it is.

Ooooh, a building in star wars!
I may yet cross briefly over to the dark side.

By in United Kingdom,

Hi, I have one question if that's ok. From the prelim pictures, Jabbas Palace just looks like a small tower and Jabbas throne. Was there anything more to the model you saw? Thanks.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

An important question: Was the Sarlacc really trans purple, -like we saw on the leaked pictures- or that thing got it's own painting?
Thx

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

oooh I cannot wait for Salacious Crumb, my favourite Star Wars character! was he a proper minifig or just some lump of plastic, like for example, Sebulba?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I cant wait for the gungan sub I missed out on the first one and the sarlacc will not be transpurple because these are premlin pics and the gungan sub shows a different looking minifig than queen amidala so it will change and I think that salacious crumb is a lump of plastic.

By in United States,

It has come up on FBTB that the minifigures from The Old Republic sets are clone wars style, and not the typical Star Wars minifigures with black eyes and white dots. Could someone confirm this? I would be greatly disappointed if this was the case...
