New minifig related features

Posted by ,

I've added a couple of new features to the site relating to minifigs. When you're logged in, go to the 'My sets' tab and you'll see a new box for 'Minifigs I Own'.

The first time you look it won't show much except for a link to 'Update my minifig collection'. When you click on that it analyses the sets you own and generates a list of the minfigs you own.

When it's done, after 20 seconds or so, the box will tell you now many minfigs you own and will show a link to 'View my minfig collection'. Click on that and, well, go and see for yourself what it does :-)

You'll also notice that minifigs are shown with a green background if you own them when you're viewing sets or the minifig browser.

Because of the amount of data involved and the time needed for the query to run, your minifig collection is not automatically created for you, and not automatically updated when you add sets to your collection. So, you'll need to periodically click on the 'Update my minifig collection' link.

Another thing I've done is produced a print stylesheet which makes pages print better, without the sidebar, header and footer. If you're using IE7 enable the 'Print background colours and images' in the Tools | Internet options menu, Advanced tab and you'll then see the green backgrounds on your printouts.

I still plan to add more minifig-related features including the ability to record ones you own that are not in sets, loose ones you've bought from BrickLink, for example.

I hope you like this new feature. It's certainly helping me keep track of my collection and I hope it helps you too. As always I look forward to your feedback.

Wow, Huw, you're good at this. Thank you, and keep it up.

By in United States,

By the way, can you add a custom minifig counter? 'Cause when I went to lego land germany, I made a custom one. It'd be cool if you could upload a picture too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

nice touch, I have been trying to find out if I have certain faces, hairpieces, etc. so this is a huge help! Keep up the good work!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Cool. Now I don't have to count my minifigs all the time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Cool thanks!

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

The "Show all minifigs in this category:" is great imo.
It doesn't seem to count the minifigs from value packs though (at least not the ones in 1891) but a cool element anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

WOW, this would have been REALLY useful before I did my census last month (grand total, 577)!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love it. Really useful.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@yoshy, assuming you've ticked that you own the subsets of 1891: 1887, 1888, 1889 and 1890, then it will show them. I don't have a way of representing sets-within-sets in the database but maybe I will one day...

By in Canada,

Very neat.

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

This feature is very useful. Thnks Huw.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Wow, this is cool.
Now if I could only I be bothered to update my sets...

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Great idea! Now I can instantly take a census and get the population of my town! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is great Huw! thanks, i love it! (my count is 893+other random minifig parts and ones from LDD models I bought) I look forward to seeing this feature updating!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks Huw. A great idea. I hope to see some more awesome new features to the site. I remember getting into this site the first time and being stunned at how many sets there were. Now it just keeps getting better and better. Awesome.

By in Hong Kong,

Thanks. A great addition.

However, it seems I can't see all my collection of minifigs at one time, but only for a particular theme. The other thing is, I cannot add or reduce the number of a particular minifig I actually have. You know, we might buy some additional or sell one or two minifigs out of our holdings. Maybe it is too demanding on functionality though.

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

Yeah Huw, I figured it would work like that.

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

Hey, admin, this is a great new feature! Thank you so much!
One complaint though: Why can't I view ALL my minifigs, I always have to select one of the themes/subthemes they are in. Why not put an option "display all minifigs" or "minifigs from all themes", something like that?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

> Why can't I view ALL my minifigs

I could add that but it could put strain on the server when those of us with 1000's of them viewed the page. Let me do some tests...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nice job, Huw - never realised how many I had !

One thing that would be nice would be to see all the figs in a particular category, for example Star Wars, rather than having to view figures for Star Wars Clone Wars, Star Wars 4/5/6 etc. etc. separately. Is is possible for you to create categories of "Star Wars overall", "Indiana Jones overall" etc. so that the user can see all the figs they have for these themes ?

Cheers,

Dr. D.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's an AWESOME feature!!! I really like it. You rock!

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Huw - all I can say is amazing. Brickset was always great and it just keep's on getting better - thanks for your hard work.
I do agree with DrDaveWatford - an overall category would be neat (give us an inch and we'll want the whole mile!).

Looking forward to more surprises...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank you for listening to my idea that i typed earlier!

By in United Kingdom,

@DrDave,

> Is is possible for you to create categories of "Star Wars overall", "Indiana Jones overall" etc.

Well yes it is, fairly easily. At least for those themes that already have a generic entry in the list, like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I've made a small change (*) so that if you select Star Wars now you'll see all Star Wars figs, not just the generic ones. Same for IJ.

It's not perfect because other themes like Town don't have a generic 'Town' category, and the number shown against the category in the drop-down doesn't include all those in the subcategories.

LMKWYT. Is it better? When I get time I'll see if it can be further improved.

(*) it's now a LIKE SQL query, e.g. LIKE 'Star Wars%'

By in United States,

This is so Awesome. I already love keeping track of my sets but now to keep up with the minifigs is incredible. I did find a few issues. I have the Caslte advent calander but the jester does not show up as a minifig I own. Also the Indiana Crystal skull set 7927 comes with a Indiana Minifig but it also is not listing the. Just wanted to let you know to help you improve errors you may be working out. But I LOVE it and already loved seeing the minifigs in the sets. Thank you for all you do and the tiem you take to make all our lives easier. at least lego lives.

By in Ireland,

Amazing! Good feature!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hi, I've only been using the site properly for the past few days, and I must say that I think it's great. One issue, though, is that I've checked 7907, 2007's City advent calendar, but none of the minifigs shows.

Just so you know, man. Keep up the (very) good work!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The advent calendars are a bit of a problem because BrickLink thinks they are 24 separate sub-sets and Brickset doesn't. I could adjust the data that's imported but because it's necessary to import the BrickLink data regularly I'll need to come up with a way to do so repeatably.

By in Japan,

What a great resource. I have ben trying to re-assemble several older sets and this will make identification much easier.
Thanks.

Gravatar
By in Hong Kong,

Thanks for this great feature! It's been years since I last did a census.
I am wondering though if the calculation of total population double counted the figs in "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones".
Once again, great work and thanks!

By in France,

Hello Huw,

First of all thank you for adding this new tool, for its very useful.

I've noted a couple of mistakes according to my collection.

I own the 10144 Sandcrawler and it came with a "C3PO pearl gold and pearl gold hands" and NO with a "C3PO with pearl light gold" as it says on the list here.

I also own the 6211 Imperial Star Destroyer and it came with 2 "Royal guard with black hands" and no with 2 "Royal guard" as it says on the list here. (In this case the mistake also appears in the instruction book).

Thank you again,
Iggy

By in United Kingdom,

This feature has actually spured me into registering with Brickset and to start listing my sets

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@playmoiggy, BrickLink calls variations like this 'alternate' parts. If you look at http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?SetID=10144-1 there appears to be three variants of C3PO in that set. Brickset doesn't yet show alternate minifigs: it would be a lot of work to do so and given there are not that many and I suspect not many people care or notice, it might not be worth implementing it.

Gravatar
By in France,

You're right. Thank you,

Gravatar
By in United States,

wow i like this feature a LOT. not only does it say which figures you have but also how many! i'll be using this feature for a long time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw, It does show the IJ minifig on the set if you just do a search but when I go to the list of "My Figs" and then choose IJ Crystal skull sets IJ doesnt show up that I have any. BUt all the others quantity numbers are correct.
Trust me I am not complaining at all I am only trying to help you fix any issues you may not be aware of.
I love the minifig search and I cant wait for more things you are able to add to the site.
Thanks

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thx Huw. This feature is awesome and really usefull when it comes to organizing minifigs.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Huw, that's a brilliant feature, thanks for devoting your time to this excellent site.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@nrbenz -- right, I understand now. The reason for that is that the IJ fig is in the 'Indiana Jones' BrickLink minifig category whereas the others in that set are in the IJ and the KotCS category.

This page, http://www.brickset.com/minifigs/browse/?theme=Indiana%20Jones&subtheme=Kingdom%20of%20the%20Crystal%20Skull, shows the minifigs in the KotCS sets including all general ones, like skeletons, as well as IJ himself.

This page http://www.brickset.com/minifigs/myCollection/?category=Indiana+Jones+%2f+Kingdom+of+the+Crystal+Skull shows just minifigs which only appear in KotCS sets (which therefore have a category of IJ and the KotCS)

It's a bit confusing I admit, but I think it's all that can be done given the nature of the data.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wonderful feature, many thanks - look forward to the next one!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Very good. I use it. thank you for this facility.

Gravatar
By in Indonesia,

Great addition!!!

but I think the database hasn't completed yet, cause many LEGO's board games doesn't have minifig.. in my case its the Castle Chess (the small one) and tic tac toe..

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Huw, one question. I used to get a lot of lego from places like Salvation Army, but I have no particular set for the minifigs, leaving me a couple spares. I know this is a lot to ask for, but could you add a feature where you could just pick new figs from a list without adding a certain set?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

To quote Huw from the very top of the page -

"I still plan to add more minifig-related features including the ability to record ones you own that are not in sets, loose ones you've bought from BrickLink, for example."

I think that probably answers the question ?

Ian

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thanks bluemoose; yes I do plan to add that feature once I've figured out the best way to do so. Because of the site's use of BrickLink data which is under constant change and review I will need to keep the list of loose minifigs you own in a separate database table to those which you have from sets, because the latter can change should the BL data change (reasons being minifigs are renumbered sometimes, new information comes to light and so on).

To complicate things further, I'll also need to make it possible to record negative quantities in the list, because you might sell some from sets you own.

So it's not straighforward and needs some thought so it works properly and without complicating the user interface.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It sounds like this is gonna take a while. I hope all goes well as you continue adding great and helpful features.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well done, Huw - the minifig feature has massively improved since I last checked in. Big respect and thanks for all you're doing for the Lego community.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Hey Huw

You added a great feature to an already awsome site! When will it be possible to add figures you ordered from bricklink?

Bart

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@badboy -- see the message from me above. This week I'm busy building the AT-OT. I hope nobody begrudges me spending time playing with bricks rather than developing websites about them :-)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Huw, I've encountered a problem with the minifigs collection.
I have Jedi Duel 1 & 2, and one of them has two droidikas. But no matter how many times I refresh the collection, it says I have zero!
