Is this the best minifig ever?

Posted by ,

Boba Fett from 9496In May 2010 when 8097 Slave I appeared, I think we all generally agreed that the Boba Fett minifig included in the set, ranked among the best minifigs ever.

Since then LEGO has continued to up its game, and we've had more excellent figures, including the Elite Clone Trooper in this year's battle pack.

Boba Now, with the release of 9496 Desert Skiff, LEGO has improved Boba, as you can see by comparing the new Boba with the old version, right. The helmet and torso are identical, as far as I can tell, but the main criticism of the old one -- that the legs weren't printed -- has been addressed. His blaster looks more convincing too.

Surely then, this has to be the best minifig ever? Can they get any better?

I think I'll crack open 9499 Gungan Sub next to see if Queen Amidala, who must take the prize for the most anticipated fig ever, surpasses it...

In my opinion the Darth Malgus minifigure is the now the best!

He's a beaut. Definitely a set I'm considering (though I would buy it under the pretence of my brother's birthday...;)

That's certainly a great fig - enough to now make the Cloud City playset Fett obsolete. The only way TLG can improve it now is to create a unique helmet stalk that isn't so big.

I completely agree with aaclapham, Darth Malgus is the best at the moment for me! If you have not opened that set yet Huw, you are in for a treat as he is really incredible. This figure however is also pretty amazing as is the rest of the set. Are you going to review the whole Desert Skiff Huw?

He looks great, but he still doesn't have the cool arm printing from his Cloud City counterpart. :)

The Star Wars figures are improving, boba fett is a prime example(he even has wookie hair!), the only thing they should do would be to improve the helmet and the antenna.
But im still suprised some figures like Chewbacca hasn't been changed since his debut except for a different shade of brown.

It's a great-looking minifigure, but it wouldn't even crack my Top Ten.

It looks good but I prefer the Imperial Guard (the Red figures from that one ship).

I think the Anubis Guards are some of the best figures ever made, they look absolutely fantastic.

Also, his face probably sucks.

I'm down with Darth Malgus from 9500 myself.

When they get detailed (separate) wookie scalp braids on Boba, then I'll rank him best.

Best SW minifig maybe, but best minifig of any theme? Not a chance in my books.

I have just noticed, I think that the dark green chest printing is lighter on the new one than the old one. I am not sure if it is just my figure, I cannot quite tell from the pictures at the top, on mine it is certainly much brighter.

I am quite sure that the queen amidala figure will beet this one

In my book the Top 3 Star wars minifigs are: #3 Bossk, #2 Jango fett (2002 original), #1 Boba Fett (Cloud City 2003) But this new one is still cool.

The helmet print is a little different. The black part on the front. And there's a little grey bit to the right of the black, otherwise they're the same.

Please pardon my ignorance, but why do people believe that the 2003 Cloud City Boba Fett is superior to this one? I don't have the figure, but I checked out the database photo after reading these comments.

It looks like it was a terrific minifig for its time, but it's a lot less impressive compared to this new version. The printing is much more crude--it doesn't have all the details, and definitely not the weathering. Did it even come with the cape?

I can see why people would prefer Cloud City Fett's molded rangefinder over the rather large one on this version. But apart from that, I don't really see why the older one would be considered better.

^Well not to offend anyone but the most reasons why the 2003 Cloud City Boba Fett is Better because. 1 The Printing is not CRUDE in fact it is better because it has arm printing and leg printing, The new Jetpack adds more of a neck wich I dislike, but the old one shows no neck. So those are my reasons why the 2003 Boba Fett is supier to this one.

What a difficult question to answer, but I have to say that the recent minifigures from 2010 and forward are better designed and executed than years past, simply due to new molds and more intricate printing. Also if the minifigure includes a cape, helmet, backpack, or weapon that seems to help add points towards the wow factor. The new Boba Fett has all that so it definitely would get my consideration.

I'm sort of impartial to the Super Heroes so Batman to me is one of the best.

@ The Reviewer - Granted the 2003 Boba Fett does have arm printing (very nice). The torso, leg and helmet printing is not better (in my opinion). Also the figure does not have a printed face underneath the helmet, but simply a black head. I also do not that you cannot rotate the helmet about the neck since the helmet and backpack are one piece. Finally no cape.

I guess Batman does get a mark down for having the white head band underneath.

The prize to best minifigure goes to Gold C-3PO because it is shiny... darn I wish I had one.

^ Well I still like the old Boba Fett better no matter what, but has anyone noticed the 2010 on has darker than the 2012 one?

@ The Reviewer - Yes I mentioned that up there^ Glad to know it is not just me.

I still prefer the Cloud City Boba Fett, but I don't have either new version yet. I'd rather have the arm printing, and even though the new helmet is separate from the jet pack now and is nicely detailed, I still like the older helmet/jet pack piece. The new one is too big and almost looks like it could have been taken from a regular action figure, whereas the older combined piece is clearly Lego. I feel the same way about the newer more detailed sets (such as the Tie Fighter). I know many people like the added details, but I want my Lego creations to still look like Lego rather than trying to hide the fact that it is made with a building toy.

By in Japan,

I like this fig a lot, but kind of wish they took this opportunity to make a ROTJ-specific torso print; he should have a different belt on. A bit nit-picky but it would have been a cool and accurate variant.

By in United States,

The new Boba is great, but I like the older one better. Sure, it's not perfect, but as someone else said it's clearly Lego. It's a more blocky design which I prefer.

@Energyarrow - I do not prefer the old Boba Fett and I did not say that I did, they are quite difficult to compare. The new Boba is obviously more accurate, but the old Cloud City Boba is still excellent for its era as at the time leg and arm printing were quite uncommon.

By in Canada,

This is for sure the best minifig EVER... well they will probably make another Boba Fett that will have arm printing that will be in maybe a new Sail Barge or something. But right now this is the best minifigure. In my opinion, but I like Boba Fett. He's my favorite character in Star Wars. The old ones are o.k but I like the helmet that comes off... I had been waiting for one for Y.E.A.R.S. Then when I saw the Slave 1 I was thinking oh my gosh... I need this, so this Desert Skiff is cheaper... no matter what your favorite character this set is a must have. It's especially cheap for how many characters... so when it comes on the shelves, you see it, grab 'em quick, just not before me. He He He
