God love bag end, but, I want Minas Tirith

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That bag end set is a beauty..... The rancor pit isn't bad either but will defintely need Jabbas Palace to complete it. As a stand alone set, it fails.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Both of those sets look great, especially Bag End. Did anyone see the Joker minifigure on ow.ly? Could there be a new Arkham Asylum set?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm disapointed with the Rancor Pit. The structure doesn't have to much to it and the Rancor looks really cheap.
Bagend on the other hand looks great. Some of the green pieces look like they are a lighter shade than the standard green.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, both look great. Bag End is amazing looking

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Rancor set seems to connect with the Jabba set...those four notches on the top of the Rancor set seem to be the connection points. Very nice...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bag End. Lovely piece of work right there.
Rancor Pit.... Not as lovely, but I'll get it for the sake of having a Lego Rancor. May have to get Jabba's Palace as well. Anyone with that set, can you tell if it could attach in any way to the Rancor Pit?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Rancor is not as good as I expected...Bag End would make a lovely Ewok or Yoda house though...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bag End looks like a MOC ! Bravo, LEGO !

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Are those stickers on the brown tiles for fence pieces or actual imprints??

EDIT: Just blew the pic up and they look like stickers :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Rancor Pit is o.k. but definitely not a stand alone set. Bag End... it is a masterpiece, but I wish the green was a little darker.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The hobbit set looks great. Will definitely put that in my collection when it's out.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ while its difficult to tell if Jabba's Palace will connect without seeing underneath it, interestingly, that set and Rancor Pit have uncannily similarly shaped bases (count the studs...?!) which could suggest stacking possibilities! - ALSO, if placed along side, that would put the lower part of the tower that comes with Jabba's Palace lower 'underground' which could reflect the cells where we find Chewie - wow, both sets combined could well be more than the sum of the parts...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Bag End looks beautiful

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bag End... I might even buy two... the green pieces look excellent!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bag end looks amazing! While the Rancor Pit doesn't look to great. I couldve made that myself. I will get it just for the rancor.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I loooove Bag End. Quite simply, Gorgeous.
Rancor pit... bit plain on its own but I imagine it will look cool with Jabba's palace. So, do I buy both sets or neither...?

@nadnerb112 - good spot and idea, the Joker does look to be in some kind of institutional jumpsuit...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Those are both so awesome, especially Bag End!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@nadnerb112 - great spot indeed!! I check quickly and that torso looks as if it has never appeared in another minifig before, perhaps I may have missed it but I am hoping for a new Arkham Asylum set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^ If we will be getting an Arkham Asylum set, lets hope for some updated villains, such as Freeze, Penguin, and Scarecrow.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^Yes, please!

Gravatar
By in Bolivia,

The hobbit house is pretty.

The rancor blows. This is a missed chance to make a cool giant brick-built creature like what a CUSOO idea suggested. Instead we just have yet another action figure that can be placed on top of studs. The pit itself is quite bland. Yet another set to rely completely on minifigures to sell.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow...Bag End. They went above and beyond there. It looks almost like it was targeted at AFOLs because it's so good.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Bag End? We wantss it, yess we do preciouss.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Mmm, modular Star Wars

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice LotR set. Rancor set looks ok, but the Cuusoo rancor project makes LEGOs version look like poo. Literally :P

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The TH set looks impressive and has a MOC like appearance more than a standard Lego set, Kudos to the Lego Designer team for developing such a intriguing, 'must buy' set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

SWEET!!!!!!! I will defintaly get the rancor pit + jabbas palace!!!!! They look AWESOME!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am looking at the bottom of my Jabba's Palace set now and yes, there are four little square holes in the bottom I had not noticed before that line up with the four pointed pieces on the Rancor pit. While I'm still not overly impressed with the Rancor pit, I do find this to be a very nice addition to the palace set. Let's just hope they don't overprice the pit...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope we get and arkham asylum set. maybe multiple modular to create a big arkham. Like bage end will get rancor set just for rancor.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bag End is a must buy for me. I wonder how much it'll cost - I'm guessing $60.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great Bag End set! I'm guessing it has more pieces than we think... I'm guessing it'll be close to 80 unfortunately. Awesome new pieces though! especially the hollow 4x4 round plates. Way to go LEGO!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@shizzuh - super, thanks for checking, I'd be staggered if these sets don't combine when you also take
Into account the trap door on the floor of the palace... Ditto re hoping the rancor pit is priced reasonably!! Would be great to usher in more possibilites to combine sets.

Bag end looks
Perfect...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Rancor Pit looks strangely familiar to Hoth Wampa Cave... Bag End looks fantastic but the dwarve's weapons look underimpressive.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Bag end looks great. Takes me back to the times lego made sets for building and design purposes rather than making ugly action sets and turning minifigures into violent action figures.
The rancor set looks kinda ugly and plain thought. Why is there a huge gap in the floor? It looks very cramped in there, not much space for the rancor chasing Luke. Oh well, the set isn't that important BECAUSE IT HAS A FREAKING RANCOR IN IT!!! :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

LOVE Bagend! Like Dr. Dave says...looks like a Moc. Love it!
Hope I don't seem like a snob but I'm disappointed in the Rancor pit. I was wanting a Rancor that could be brick built and larger. But I'm assuming coupled with Jabba's Palace should have a nice overall display look.

Gravatar
By in United States,

hoping that Joker is part of another batman set, maybe a late tie in with TDKR?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Both amazing and a few wishes fulfilled. I like both and will buy both thank you TLG for listening to us.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very disappointed with the Rancor set, looks like some mish mash thrown together. And really, no chute for the characters to drop down into the pit? This one doesn't make the cut, may just try to get the Rancor loose on eBay for the kids.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Any one else noticing the minifigs ghosting in the rancor set photo? You can see legs in the grey bricks that make up the base. Seems to be the same three figures in the same poses.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Joker looks like perhaps from a new Arkham Asylum set?
@gunoz...I think the 'chute' for characters to fall into the pit are in Jabba's Palace set when you move Jabba's Throne and under it is a trap door.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

love bag end. on ow.ly there are pictures of different things like the joker. i hope the lotr dwarfs have their first initials or something printed on them to know their name

Gravatar
By in United States,

amazing!

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's a nice looking hole. Definitely will stick my hobbit in there.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Inside the door of the hobbit hole there's a map of Middle earth! Zoom in on it, it looks great! And behind the cell door in the rancor pit... rancor pooper scooper!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Also doing a quick scan for new pieces, the hobbit's windows are 4 by 4 circles with a 2 by 2 whole in them, witch I believe are new. And the Rancor Keeper has a staff with clips on both ends! WANT!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really?? Is that it? LEGO has fallen into the trap of producing mediocre sets and packaging in some exclusive mini figures to help the crap sell. Even if it attaches to the upcoming Jabba's Palace it lacks creativity and depth of any kind. Considering Lego's increasing greed with the SW sets, this set will probably run upwards of $70.00. Garbage!! The Hobbit set on the other hand ranks at the opposite end of the spectrum. This is truly a superb looking set. I'm not a huge fan of the new LOTR sets but these kind of sets will definitely command my attention and get me to open up my pocketbook.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Rancor=fail in my mind.

Gravatar
By in Guam,

Anyone else remember when LEGO was more about imagination? I totally agree with the people here on the cuusoo rancor being so much better. As for the new Hobbit set...I actually feel like uncle Bilbo has left ME Bag End.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No, NO! The Rancor pit is gone!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Both sets look fantastic! I'd really like to see the Rancor Pit have some...functions, I guess. Like, a lever that pulls down the gate on the Rancor's head, like in the movie. And Bagend looks stunning! It's so viscerally beautiful from top (especially the use of those green pieces) to the bottom! LEGO has done it again!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bluemoose, the rancor pit picture has been removed. Im no expert, but I believe the brickset effect has struck again.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The rancor's okay for what it is, I guess. I'm disappointed that it's more like an "action figure" and not a buildable creature. It's certainly a big figure, but not nearly rancor scale.

Also, I'll eat serious crow on this. A couple weeks ago I had doubted CapnRex and a few others when they predicted that the four holes on the Jabba's Palace floor had significance.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it is safe to say Lego hit a home run on Bag End. I must say that the entire LOTR collection has been fantastic and not just becuase of the figures the builds are great. That said I am very excited to see the other sets in The Hobbit line.

The Rancor is a relief to see. It is a lackluster build... so far that can be seen, but the fact that more than likely it connects with the Palace is great. It is a pit so what do we really expect to see? I know many would like to see a brick built rancor but I for one am so very glad it is what it is. I like that style. It is a solid, usable "figure" and I like that. Too many times have brick built creatures disappointed me. So to the Lego team who made it thanks and thumbs up.

Gravatar
By in United States,

both great looking sets. i like the Rancor mould. the picture of the set on the link is gone, but if you google "lego 2013 rancor" it shows up on the top line.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wonder if bag end comes with a light brick, or that (very cool) interior lighting is only for marketing purposes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Perfectly happy with the Rancor set. Would have like to see a spot to wedge Luke into so he can hide from the Rancor. Hobbit set is great too but I hope that the dwarves have some better weapons than just knives. I think that Lego will do a set with the three trolls, campfire, and a small cave with the treasure and weapons in it. That will be a great set!! Can't wait to see the rest of them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bag End looks really interesting, I like it. As for the Rancor Pit, that just looks like a very lazy design. It's a simple square pit, that any 6 year old could make. No scope, no creativity. Hopefully the price reflects that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A close look at Bag End makes me think that the steam punk lego builders will be buying this set in numbers... look at those nice window and door pieces :)

The Rancor Pit... Sadly, I would rather see the Couscoo Rancor. Though the shape being shown might lend nicely to some Alien/Predator mocs. Still, I see the Rancor Pit being bought for minifigs. As stated before, the creativity of the pit itself is lackluster... and on the day I built my Desert Skiff 9496, which is a very quality build.

Gravatar
By in United States,

a quick web search for Lego Rancor should lead you to images of it, since the link here is no longer working.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It appears that the main part of Jabba's palace will fit onto the rancor pit, but what about the adjoining tower section?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The first picture has been removed : ( at Owly

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Bravo!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah, what's up with that. The picture of the "Rancor Pit" has been removed. I can't wait 'til the set comes out. I know Comic-Con said release is in 2013, but does anyone know yet if that means January 2013 or August 2013?

Gravatar
By in United States,

That rancor looks fan-flippin-tastic... and whew. That hobbit hole is sexy. I especialy love the door and windows.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ya picture has been removed on Owly of the rancor pit.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The Rancor Pit should connect below Jabba's Palace here, check this image http://cl.ly/1L0g0v221A3g3B0a3046 (comes from the instructions).

I've never been a fan of licensed items in general, but "Bag End" looks really really good.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am very eager for the rancor.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Anyone finds that the rancor pit reminds you of the rubbish compactor in the death star?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Any links for that joker?

Gravatar
By in United States,

OMG!!

I have been highly peeved and critical of the utter lack of a single female character in the LOTR line, and that has caused me major disappointment in the first wave of sets.

Seeing Bag End, though.... I am in awe. What an amazing looking set!! My daughter just finished reading the Hobbit, and she is going to be in love with this set.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The Rancor Pit I'll hopefully be getting for the monster and the minifigs. Bag End I'll pass on - not a big fan of the dwarf designs, Gandalf isn't new and Bilbo looks just like every other Hobbit going.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bag End looks fantastic - It's nice to see TLG taking some cues from the quality of MOCs these days.

tamamahm, there aren't very many female characters in the LOTR books either, as I recall. Arwen and Eowyn were secondary characters, but that's about it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lord of the Rings just does not have many female characters. Though @Blackicep8ntball, you forgot Galadriel. It's not Lego's fault that the source material is dominated by male characters.

I LOVE Bag End though, it is probalby my favorite of the Tolkien based Lego Sets. Lego captures the essence of the Hobbit hole very well, and it is epic, cute and awesome all at once. I am not too impressed by the Rancor Pit, I will save my money for other Hobbit and Star Wars Sets. That Rancor is going to be expensive on Bricklink...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@encoree Ya it will fit on there.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really like the Rancor set and hope LEGO will do more sets in this modular mode.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

The Rancor set picture has been removed. Bag End looks lovely, but this shade of green looks too bright for me. Maybe sand green would be better.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The only reason I want jabbas palace is because it attaches to the rancor pit, lego should make a lot more sets which attach like the old hogwarts!
and bag end looks Amazing!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Bag End is really beautiful!!! No more secons thoughts, I'll definetly make place somewhere in my house to store all LOTR & Hobbit sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

WOW! That Bag End is pretty darn impressive! Plus, do I see a new piece? The circle surrounding the window looks like a new piece. The Rancor Pit looks alright, but Star Wars figures are looking increasingly more and more un-lego-like which I find as a worrying trend.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

According to fbtb.net the bag end set is $59.99 and on fbtb.net they have loads more pics including the inside and I think I can see a new Lego pretzel

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Dont like the dorf weapons, (pick axe, small daggers & oversized hammer) hope Lego sorts them out by release. new axe and hammer parts please.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

^the pretzel looks great, didn't expect that! I predict that it will be appear in minifigures series 8 as an accessory for the lederhosen kid. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Given the recent price trends of January released SW legos, the prices usually don't go over $60...so hopefully the Rancor Pit will fall into that category. If it does perhaps I'll consider it given that I have always fantasized over a Rancor. I hoped it would be brick built but I do like the mold and the accuracy so I can't really complain there. However, it's the size that worries me as it looks to be undersized to the point where even the lego versions of the veractyl and dewback could dwarf it...which is wildly inaccurate and inappropriate to the Star Wars Universe. Oh, and Bag End looks utterly gorgeous and perhaps one of the best sets in the last decade. It is clearly a love letter to AFOLs and MOCers alike and, if I do say so, solidifies the belief that this is the second Golden Age of Lego.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I just clicked on the link to the Star Wars set and it said the picture was removed by the owner...But the Bag end set looks awesome!

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Bag End looks great a builders type set with a nice selection of minifgs to round it off; whereas it appears that the Rancor Pit is a more basic looking build relying on the minfigs to hook people in.

When I was first introduced to Lego during the classic space era you were limited to a couple of colours of the same figure and the reliance was on the look, playability and adaptability of the builds which continues with the non licensed themes today. The licenses for Star Wars and Superheros lead me to believe that the minifigs are the selling point - fair enough there are plenty of iconic vehicles with Star Wars which weakens my point a lot; however this Rancor set seems to lend credence to this theory as the stand out item is the Rancor and probably Malakili as the build itself seems 'basic' at first look.

The Bag End set is attractive as a build, as I remember sets from my childhood, the minifigs are the icing on the cake.

Of course in saying all that I would very much like to get both sets; the Rancor pit for the figs and Bag End because it looks great. Either way Lego keeps finding ways of damaging my wallet, I don't think my wife will be too pleased to see them either :).

Gravatar
By in United States,

"Pics"? Are there more than one of each set?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not at all disappointed by the Rancor, its as cute as the one I played with as a child with my Star Wars figures. I’m even liking the LOFR set even though I’m not a fan of the films/books.
I so cannot wait until they are released !!!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Since LEGO seemingly took the original dnow, a copy of the image of the Rancor Pit, for those who missed it:

http://i.imgur.com/0H1AJ.jpg

Sure, it's likely been circulated and backed up pretty much everywhere else in this fandom by now, but another copy never hurt anyone.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^Thanks!

And I noticed that the dwarf with the sausage, (Bombur?) has a flesh-colored 1x1 round tile for a bald spot!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have been thinking about the Rancor Pit set and my feelings are rather muddled. My first reaction was that it seems to be a fine set to fit the name, and very much movie-accurate as well. Yet I perceive some clear issues that belie Lego's descension "down a path I cannot follow." Is it too much to wish for a set without a hulking, one-piece Rancor as a stage-in for a brick-built version? The model itself is uninspiring and seems to incorporate little of Lego's usual wit and incredible design. Yes, it has detail, but is this the kind of execution that SW fans really want? Certainly not me.

But then again, I have been hoping Lego would make a better Jabba's Palace complex for years, and TLG does not disappoint on that count. Would I be a hypocrite not to buy this?

At all costs, I urge Lego and Star Wars devotees to think again.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bag End is only $60 which seems like a really good price for four dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo. I'm on the edge of my seat wondering about the piece count. Does anyone have a guess as to the amount of pieces?

Gravatar
By in United States,

OMG this is epic. Exactly what I was hoping for from the LotR sets!

Nice figs in this one. The Dwarf with the hat is Bofur, the fat one with the sausage is Bombur, the bald one is Balin, the white bearded Dwarf is Dwalin, and of course there's Gandalf and Bilbo.

And, holy crap, it looks like Bombur's hair/beard piece also has his fat protruding belly attatched!

I really hope LEGO makes the other nine dwarves available...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Since there's not a new thread for other SDCC news, I just wanted to mention that fbtb.net has official photos of the next series of Superheroes sets' minifigs. For Marvel, there's a terrific Venom (the real one, not the SDCC exlusive black-suited Spider-Man), Doctor Doom, Nova and some others.

For D.C., there's a Dark Knight Rises Bane, which is surprising--I didn't think they'd make movie-based sets due to the adult nature. It also looks like there will either be a jail or a new Arkham--there's a Joker in an inmate jumpsuit and Harley Quinn in nurse/administrator disguise.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Rancor looks great, but not much replay value for rebuilding it,tho it would look great displayed in a cabinet. The Shire looks amazing, great characters, great little Shire, especially those unique beard pieces.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The rancor pit is a very ugly structure. However, 'Bag End' is amaaazing! if its £59.99 though, it will be just too much for me. I love all of the caramel pieces!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

NO STICKERS PLEASE LEGO! Tis lovely though. Didn't get in quick enough to see the rancor pit

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Rancor pit looks great, and I think it definitely will connect with the Jabba's Palace set(or I will make it fit....lol). It looks to be around 350-400 pieces, so I think it will be around $50, given the current set prices at that piece count. The Rancor looks suitably large and impressive, and the Rancor Keeper, Gamorrean Guard(mmm...pork...munch munch), and Luke(with bone! nice) look good too. Can't wait.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Who can say that they did not want to see Bag End turned in to Lego when Lego Lord of the Rings was revealed? The model looks suitably cosy and fantastic, I love the use of turntable bases in the windows.

I hope there is some kind of function which allows you to hit the brown button on the wall of the Rancor pit and drop the gate on to it. It would not be that hard to MOC whatever is eventually included.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Rancor Pit looks okay ... I have certainly seen better. I cannot see Lego overpricing this considering how much Jabba's Palace costs. I reckon it will be no more than £40 / $60. Is there a release date?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow! I really love that set and I want it a lot!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Y'know... I actually like the rancor pit. In fact, I like it a lot. It really has all you need to recreate that scene, and it looks like a decent structure. Now the part of this set that really shines is the rancor itself. Frankly I have always preferred molded animals to brick-builds. To me even the good brick built beasts tend to look like clunky machines rather than living organisms.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That is awesome! Looks like no stickers!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Musst... get... Bag... End...!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

THE HOBBIT LEGO!!!!! I read the book recently and this looks like JRR Tolkiens discription I CAN'T WAIT
