4440 Forest Police Station

Posted by ,

4440 Forest Police StationFor my pick of the week this week I've chosen a set that I hadn't planned on buying but, now I have it, I'm tempted to buy more of the series.

Normally, like most AFOLs I suspect, I have no interest whatsoever in emergency services sets, particularly police stations and cars, which have been done to death since I was a lad in the 1970s. However this year LEGO has managed to breathe some new life into the police theme by moving them from a city setting to the forest, complete with trees, bears, off-road vehicles and hidden booty.

4440 Forest Police Station is the largest set in the theme and, having just built it, I have to say that it is exceptional both in terms of playability and usefulness of parts. The fun starts as soon as you've built bag 1, which contains the tree, bear, quad-bike, robbers and a female police officer (not shown above). The bag would make an excellent mid-priced set on its own and is one you'd be likely to buy multiples of, for the tree parts and of course the bear.

4440 Forest Police StationBag two builds the Range-Rover style police off-roader, which is also an excellent model.

I'm not normally one for applying stickers but a police car without police markings would look a bit daft. As they are printed on transparent backing plastic and not white (which is prone to peeling over time), I made an exception this time.

The fourth minifig, another police officer, is provided to drive the vehicle.

4440 Forest Police StationBag three builds the police helicopter. It's a bit on the small side and also somewhat juniorised, but it's perfectly functional.

Although it adds to the set's playability it could be argued that it's a bit superfluous because, unlike recent police station sets, there is no helicopter landing pad on the police station itself.

The pilot is the fifth and final minifig, who has a dark blue torso and legs.

The set would make a great one for a family to build together because each sub-assembly has its own instruction book so they can be built concurrently.

4440 Forest Police StationThe police station is a good looking structure featuring a small office with desk and coffee machine on one side and a cell on the other. The cell doesn't really need two doors as there's no dividing wall, and I'm not really sure what the red letter-box thing between the doors is for: it slides in and out.

It's built with plenty of useful parts including 27 'Medium Dark Flesh Brick, Modified 1 x 2 with Masonry Profile' and 33 'Medium Dark Flesh Brick, Modified 1 x 2 Log' bricks so once you're done playing with it, it will make a good parts pack for your own creations.

One thing I found unusual was that the set comes with a second tree that is not shown anywhere on the box (or in my photos for that matter). It's not often you get more in the box than you're expecting, is it!

So despite my initial apprehension and normal dislike of police sets, I will recommend this set particularly at the moment because it's 33% off at all of the European Amazons (except France), making it a much more reasonable £40, or €50. At Amazon.com the discount isn't so great but US$70 is still a good price.

The red letter box is a "escape" play feature for the robbers

I am not entirely sure about this subtheme as a whole. There are highlights such as the bear which I have Bricklinked and the dark red truck in set 4437, Police Pursuit which I purchased, but other than that I find it all a bit specialist and not entirely relevant to me if course. Living in Southern England, you don't see too many bears wandering around, or very many forest Police stations for that matter! At a big discount though, as a parts pack, this set sounds excellent.

By in Switzerland,

I bought two of this, for parts (the set was something around 33 euros at amazon). It is a great set by itself, as for the theme I am with CapnRex101 - essentially it is just more police.

actually the red letter box is for giving the robber food, at least that is what i think it is. it would be unwise to open the door to hand them their meals

^Quote from the LS@H text for this set "Remove the mailbox and escape!"
Also on the product page on the LEGO City microsite, the animation shows a robber pushing out the red letter box and climbing out of the hole.
So I think that the purpose of the red letter box is pretty clear once you examine the evidence.

I have the dark red truck. It is a great way to get dark red pieces for Republic Star Wars ships.

This set is only £34.79 at Argos in the UK at the moment as well

^ I did wonder about that myself. There's something odd with the Argos website at the moment. If you view our discounted sets list, http://www.brickset.com/buy/uk/argos/, or indeed search for 'LEGO Police' at Argos it shows the discounted price, but once you land on the item details page it shows full price. I guess you might not know which one prevails until you went and paid for it...

^^ Just on the argos thing - I was in store yesterday deciding how to spend my £10 voucher from the 3 for 2 quinjets and batmobile as they run out the end of this month and on the instore screen came up at £34.79 too - ended up using the voucher on a Barbie Mini for my daughter though - only had to pay £8 for RRP of over £35. (Too much lego at the Manchester grand opening at weekend, plus trades plus JL batwing pricematch...)

By in United States,

I LUG NY did a parts draft of this set back in December and it was a perfect set to draft with the new Polics figs, bears, tree elements, masonry bricks, dark flesh log bricks and dark flesh 1x4 tiles. The only problem we had was that the set took FOREVER to sort and then draft. Well worth it though if other LUGs are considering this set for a draft.

Yea, wish TLG had made the first build in a set so I could get a bear in a set.
