Posted on behalf of LEGO's community team:

You are invited to take part in the most exciting competition in LEGO Technic history!

Design a special top for our new 9398 4x4 Crawler!

You can do it!
New to LEGO Technic? Or a seasoned veteran builder with a basement full of elements? Not important. We’ve got the chassis, so if you have a great idea for an awesome design to go with it, don’t let anything hold you back!
Upload a picture of your design to the LEGO Technic Co-Creations Gallery.

You can draw a model, use paper, sticks and glue, LEGO, or something completely different.

The prize
If you win, you can call yourself an honorary LEGO Technic Designer! We help you get the complete Technic design and building experience perfect. And the best part? We produce 20,000 of your unique model as exclusive collectibles!
You can find all the details on how to enter, tips and inspiration, and pictures of the chassis you need to use on lego.com/technic .

The competition is open until midnight, December 31, 2012. But hurry -- you need time to get enough votes to make the top 100 and be considered for the final!

We can’t wait to see your creations! -- The LEGO Technic design team.

By in United Kingdom,

I saw the advert for You Design It - We Make It on their website yesterday. I wondered if it was going to be a rehash of the Design by Me site.

It was odd that LEGO broke their own news embargo. The press kit we were sent said not to publish until 12pm CET today.

It was definitely on their website last night.

PS. the link under the image is not formed correctly.

Edit: nor is the text one.

Interesting contest... too bad I don't have the parts to build anything that large...

By in Netherlands,

Why not use the cussoo platform for this? Isn't that the same thing: posting ideas, getting votes, getting your idea produced?

Cussoo is dominated by the StarWars and other franchise fans. Technic-based models have little chance of making the 10,000 vote cut there no matter how creative or polished. Kudos to the Technic team for recognizing Cussoo's deficiency and providing an alternative proving ground for the Technic designers.

From the LEGO-site: "You can win the honour of being the best LEGO Technic designer – but no further prizes will be awarded."

Yes, it's cool that they'll produce the winning design but some kind of reward would be appropriate, don't you think? You don't even get a copy of your own design?!

It's completely different to cuusoo. Cuusoo is about new ideas. This is designing a specific section for an existing model.

@Thunderburt

In my perspective being given the honor to become co-designer of a LEGO Technic official model is a huge prize in itself.
And guess this could turn even more cool, when we come to see all the details by the set release date.

However bear in mind this is a contest targeted for all ages, including children and TLG won't be able to pay them.
That's the reason why there is no prize money in this challenge.

^ I agree it would be super cool (wait, I should say 'fat', right?) to have them produce your design and I'm not saying LEGO should reward the winner with royalties or money. However, them specifically stating how 'no further prices will be awarded' makes them sound almost greedy i.m.o. Especially when they have so much to offer that wouldn't cost them but would be of great value to the average fan. I mean, they have special limited sets for all kinds of occasions, why not throw in one of those? Or a small selection of new sets? Or at least a copy of the winning set!

This exact "Build a new Body" contest was actually "Unofficially" announced by Lego earlier this year...
