Exclusive Elrond minifig now out

Posted by ,
Elrond

Here's the exclusive LotR Elrond minifig that's available when you pre-order the LEGO Lord of the Rings video game. In the USA I'm told it's only available in Game Stop.

Unfortunately, according to the back of the polybag, like other minifigs of its ilk, it's not made in Europe or Mexico so won't be quite as good as those that are.

Thanks to BrickPusher for the picture.

By in Canada,

Up here in Canada, it's through Toys R Us. Limited quantity at my local store by the sounds of it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

in the UK it can be pre ordered from both Game & Gamestation which is not a surprise as they are one of the same.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^I thought Game station closed down? or is it just my local one then

Not particularly interested in the Lego games or the mini figure it self, but reading about the quality makes this a pass for me

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I ordered from EB Games in Australia a few weeks ago. Not sure how many would be left in stock by now...

By in United States,

@HUW..... this site needs to stop it's bashing for items not made in certain countries, I have seen both good and bad things coming out of "other countries".
As an AFOL I don't care where my items are made, as long as ther are good and entertain me or my children.

Do you even have this item in hand to make such a comment " won't be as good as those that are"

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw, I appreciate the comments about quality. You just saved me some money. I don't see it as bashing ...I think Huw is commenting based on experience and there is nothing wrong with that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Have we even heard when Lego LOTR is coming out, or did I just miss that?

Gravatar
By in United States,

^It's kind of been out since July, or August in the UK...
EDIT: Oh, duh! I feel like a nitwit now. The videogame comes out in November.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is really strange. Mine hasn't even shipped.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I managed to get one today, was super exited for this figure, and was a little disappointed to find that it was made in China, but it wasn't going to stop me from getting it. What bugged me is that when I assembled the figure, his blue cape is HOBBIT SIZED! It barely reaches his waist. Did I get an incorrect cape, or is that the way all of them come? If anyone has one yet let me know.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Do you get the figure when you preorder? or do you have to wait until the game comes?

Gravatar
By in United States,

How are people already getting them in the US? I pre ordered the game from gamestop and it will not get released for until 11/13/12.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I was under the impression that all the minifigs are at least partly made in china now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does anyone know for certain that this figure will be released only with this game? I don't play video games, and if I bought this I would sell the game. I am not sure what the cost would be, if I bought this minifig on Bricklink, but it seems like it would be really high if this is the only way to get it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thats an odd representation of Elrond. He was never in any fights in the LOTR series. Possible exception is the preview when "he was there when the ring was taken from Sauron". I think he would have looked better in a stately, diplomatic pose.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

^ Nah, he fought a bit in the opening sequence before Sauron struck down Elendil and Isildur. He ordered the elves to fire arrows, then draw their swords etc.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd rather not buy a Lego game since after about a month the games usually go for half off in Gamestop used. Right now in Lubbock, Tx the Lego Batman 2 video game goes for 19.99 I'd rather use the money for the new SuperHeroes sets. I guess I'll just stop by my local Gamestop when I have to put more money on the preorder for Halo 4, the figure looks great but your pretty much paying 60$ for a Minifig that has the same quality as the Collectable Minifigure. Btw most Gamestops and Eb Games have to get rid of there extra preorders usually they will just give them away to anybody who asks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I may get this on amazon when it becomes avaible. @nightmarevalkyrie is eb games still around? a few years ago I used to see quite a few of them, but they are now all Gamestops.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Does he have an alternate excpression?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Lol everybody is saying that minifigs made in China are crap, but I just don't see why the figures from China aren't good. Only the colors are a bit different. The only figures I have that broke are minifigures made in Europe.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^But the colors are definitely noticeable, and on All my CMF the yellow is different than other figs I have plus on CMF the white on red is almost always pink instead of white.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

He doesn't look happy, does he? To me, this seems like a poor representation of Elrond. I still want one...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not a bad figure if you want one and don't mind varying plastic production qualities.
Of late, have inoffensive comments made only to represent the views of the comment poster on an open comments platform gotten overtly criticised? And now the bloke that built it gets grilled too!

Gravatar
By in United States,

These kinds of comments would end if Brickset would simply stop its public Sinophobia.

Huw thinks that all LEGO coming from China is automatically crap, we get it. Just stop.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's been repeatedly proven that certain LEGO manufacturing locations have lower quality standards/materials. I am grateful to Huw for identifying which location this fig is produced in, and will subsequently pass because of it. Get the game at amazon in a few months when it's a fraction of the original cost.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's not sinophobia at all: a representative from LEGO's quality department stated (at AFOLCON this year) that ABS parts made in China use a different forumulation because the raw granulate that LEGO uses elsewhere can't be imported into China and that's why there are differences in the finished products.

My view, and that of many, is that the ABS that is used is not as good quality as that used elsewhere so I feel it it my duty to inform people in cases such as this so as to avoid them shelling out for a game they don't want only to get a minifig that might not meet their quality expectations.

Some of the highest quality consumer products on the market (iPads etc) are made in China so it's not the country or its people that I am criticising: it's LEGO for accepting sub-par materials into its supply chain.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This would be a great minifig purchase, it is truly too bad about the poorer plastic. My experiences with sets like the Pharaoh's Quest battle pack and the Kingdoms Chess set have been disappointing and I try to avoid the Chinese plastic at all costs. It isn't just the colors, the minifigs don't hold their weapons/accessories very well. The hands are abysmal. Thankfully they are cheap to replace.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw, Exactly... TLG should go by there motto "Only the best".

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@Huw, that's a fair explanation, but I find fault with this - "so as to avoid them shelling out for a game they don't want". You seem to be decidedly slanted against the LEGO games (I recall almost an exact same topic some months ago about the Lex Luthor pre-order minifig for LEGO Batman 2), but hey!, come on, some of us are looking forward to this! :P

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Some, including me, don't play the games but buy them just for the figure. I don't know if I will this time or not, but I'm less likely to now I know it's made of an inferior ABS.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

How do I get the figure in the UK? I can pre-order the game on Amazon or Gamestop, but the figure isn't mentioned anywhere.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@HUW...... stating made in China is fine, but it is the un-needed extra comments "so won't be quite as good as those that are" Having collected all the minifigure collections so far I really don't see the issues.....they hold their weapons, the stay together and my kids love them.

Bottom line they do what they are intended to do.

I liked your final explanation....... But please keep in mind the comments of yourself and others does come off as offensive and I won't blame any readers from China to stop reading the continued bashing of lego products from their country.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What is the thing at the bottom left of the picture of the polybag? It seems to show a picture of the Lego LotR website. Maybe it has some sort of code thingy that you can put in?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Completely agree with what vamproe is saying. I don't have a problem with simply stating that a figure is Chinese-made and let readers come to their own conclusion. What irks me is the constant, repeated, and automatic association of Chinese-made LEGO with inferiority. It has been concluded multiple times that low-quality parts can come from any of the LEGO factories; conversely, Chinese-made parts have likewise been shown to have the same high quality that we all demand from LEGO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey, I want the game, but I don't want to shell out $49.99 if I can get it later for $19.99

Gravatar
By in United States,

To answer a few of the questions above:

teal93mr2 - The game release date has been moved to 10-30-12, the figure is available when you reserve a copy of any of the different versions of the game (I reserved the Nintendo DS version which only costs $29.99 US, the cheapest of the bunch.) It is up to the individual Game Stop if they distribute the figure upon reservation or upon pickup, although I am pretty sure it is supposed to be upon pick up.

yys4u - My figure also contained the hobbit size cape, not sure why but surely must be part of the international conspiracy that seems to be plaguing the Lego universe :-)

Plasmodium - The original polybag does have an online webcode printed on it that can be used on thelordoftherings.lego.com, the code was purposely blurred in the picture.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would imagine that many of the collectors that get this minifigure won't even open the polybag, so the quality of the minifigure won't be an issue.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Who cares if Huw mentions that the Chinese parts are inferior? - is he not just stating factual information? - it was my understanding that the AFOL community has proven this to be true (correct me if I'm wrong) - it is good to mention for new comers who might not know about the differences in quality

I would appreciate if country-of-origin was mentioned more on the site - because it definitely alters my buying decisions - maybe the cheaper plastic doesn't matter much to you - but quality always matters to me

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm a little bit confused on this. If the figure is out in Game Stop USA, can you go to a store and just buy one of these polybags without needing to pre-order?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I have three copies of the game on preorder. Has it been delayed in Canada as well?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Don't you just love a good ' Chinese Inferior Figures ' Debate?. I think you've hit a few nerves Huw! ;-)
Totally right though, the Chinese figures are clearly not as good as the others. Some of the old Star Wars magnet sets are so bad you can almost see through the legs!
Obviously a child isn't going to care or even notice but surely it can only add to the thrill of being an AFOL to have a collection with the least amount of Chinese figures???

Gravatar
By in United States,

@UtarEmpire, @vamproe, et al...

I see no mention of the word 'China' in the OP. Has it been edited? Either way, tossing around accusations of 'sinophobia' and accusing Huw of offense because he states a known fact (that has been confirmed by LEGO themselves) rates the labeler no better than the one they are labeling.

I don't get offended when others discount American mfg'd cars, and I seriously doubt too many in China get wound up when someone challenges the quality of ONE Chinese-made product.

Huw's site == Huw can say whatever he pleases. If you are truly offended because Huw is letting the rest of us know where something is made - and includes his opinion with it - then exercise other options available to you.

Name-calling and extreme accusations are certainly part of those options, but they do tend to make the accuser look no better than the one they are accusing...

/returns thread back to the MF and game conversation...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I guess I'll go to Gamestop and see if they have the figures yet. Won't hurt to ask and it's right across the mall from the Lego store =-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Legolas hair, in my opinion, does not work for Elrond. He needs hair over the shoulders not unlike 'Qui-Gon Jinn' hair, just less stupid-puffy and with ears.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@joedapoboy - probably just a quick easy fix. If/when they make a proper LOTR Elrond, hopefully they make a unique hairpiece or use Qui-Gon's hair like you suggested. I agree he needs the hair over the shoulders/front of hears.

I've started thinking about what minifigs/sets could be coming out next year... I'm pulling for either Minas Tirith or Rivendell as a big, exclusive, adult-oriented set a la Diagon Alley or the Haunted House. Barring that I have no real idea since it won't be a line of giant buildings. =)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Minifigure looks great to me and the poorer quality plastic is of little concern, just so long as Lego keep it isolated to only a few figures and it does not become widespread.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw: While I am perfectly willing to recognize that Chinese production doesn't always have the same consistency as LEGO is known for, I should mention that I've heard at AFOL events that the ABS used in the Chinese plant was chosen because it was the closest to their regular formulation (in terms of colorfastness, clutch power, chemical stability, etc.) that they could get within the country. There are apparently manufacturing laws in China that require them to use a certain amount of domestic material, and so using the same material as in their other plants is not even an option.

At least, that's my understanding-- I've mostly avoided this debate in recent months since there are minor differences and it really comes down to personal preference whether they are positive, negative, or inconsequential. So feel free to correct me if my info stands out as erroneous or out-of-date.

Gravatar
By in United States,

To throw some more facts at the Chinese plastic debate, my Elrond figure has a grossly misprinted ear, while my Legolas figure (same hair piece) has a very clear paint job.

@Brickpusher darn, that's pretty disappointing if they all have this ridiculous short cape

Gravatar
By in Mexico,

the real problem is that one strives to achieve a specific set for either parts or exchange game collection and quality that the difference TLG competition was based on durability and superior color ¿no

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Quick fix for getting a short cape: use the normal green cape used on Eomer (as he doesn't actually have a cape in the film) as a replacment, and then you get a spare short green cape! :D
The figure is very cool, in my opinion. Early on I thought it was a bit colourful, but it works I guess. I like the recurring theme of giving Elves golden arms. Anyone know if he has a double-sided face yet?

Gravatar
By in United States,

In response to Albus, yes, he has a second expression. He looks kinda stern or grim.
Regarding this stupid short cape, it's blue and matches his shoulders. I don't think the green would look quite right. I'm going to place a request for a missing or defective part with Lego customer service. The paint and everything else about the figure are fine though.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wow, blue! It really looks like dark green everywhere else I've seen it. Oh well, that's alright in that case I guess. Thanks Str0ngbad!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Customer service will send a replacement cape if you'll file a missing part claim on the Lego website. Apparently, the full-sized cape in earth blue won't be available until Nov. 15. A bit of a mess but their customer service was very helpful.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You can get him in the UK by preordering from Game!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well this kind of blows. Just received my order from the US Gamestop store and no Elrond figure :( Now I have to pay the ridiculous prices on ebay to get one.
