The Sun promotion has started...

30163 ThorI'm sure I don't need to remind UK readers that the free LEGO with The Sun promotion has started today, but just in case you've been living in a cave for the last few months... get down to WHS right away! :-)

Today's offering is 30163 Thor and the Cosmic Cube. Given that this set has not been seen in the UK before, and previously Thor was available only in expensive sets, it's a great little polybag to start off the promotion with.

The rock piece is frangible so that you can mimic Thor breaking it by moving the black Technic beam lever on the side. It's pretty unremarkable otherwise, but with Thor in it, it's worth 50p of anyone's money.

My branch of WHS was surprisingly civilised this morning at 9:15; my wife and I walked straight to the till, and there wasn't a walking-stick wielding granny or scalper in sight. I suspect tomorrow will be worse given the store doesn't open until 10:00 am and everyone's had time to get up and go into town by then. In case you need reminding, here's the list of sets we can look forward to this week.

Forgive my ignorance but what's a scalper?

My WH Smiths was very civilised this morning and opens at 9am on Sunday so hopefully will be as good again.

Love the Thor polybag, great little set, reminds me I have to bring one to a friend =-)

You guys sure are lucky to have these offers every few months, most in the US have nothing close... I'm lucky to live smack dab next to a Lego store and a few blocks from TRU so I can take advantage sometimes, but that's it. Gonna get cleanie and go see what the Monster Fighters build at TRU is like and try to get some schwag =-)

Same here Smiths was dead at 08:30 and I did the buy a paper get lego, walk back to car and take voucher out of paper walk back to Smiths get second bag, so one for best and one to open, nice result.

scalpers are those who get multiple bags and then head over to ebay and try and do flog them for a nice tidy profit. The good thing about this offer, that the price of Thor poly on ebay will now drop, and so will Hawkeye( sundays poly)

There was no panic at my local either in fact they still had some left at half 2 which is v unusual

I've never done it before, so can someone tell me how it's done? Like do you just go to the shop, pick up a newspaper, pay the 50p at the till and they give you the polybag?

"frangible", nice word, I always like to use it myself.

^^ That's pretty much it, yes.

@Jon_K, we don't condone 'double-dipping' here, as it's tantamount to fraud.

Huw - if that was the WHSmith in Fareham the scalpers had already been. I was second in the queue at 0830 and the guy in front bought 20. He said they were all for "his boy"....but who the hell needs that many Asgardians? The grannies behind me immediatly engaged "tut" mode at him. I expect I'll see him tomorrow!

I bought mine off eBay this morning, for only £3.50. So take away the 50p paper charge, it's only an added £3 for a lie in and home delivery. The bus fare into town and back is more than £3 anyway.
It's a nice little set and I can't wait for it to come.

@Huw; I'm presuming 9:!5 is 9:15? :P

Well I was elsewhere in town, but my parents got it for me around half tennish, apparently there were loads of people, but also loads of polybags there. Maybe they just have really good stock this time round.

Totally agree that more than a couple should not be allowed. I do however get 2. One I open to photograph and review and the other to keep.

@huw.. double dipping a necessary evil, but unlike some I have seen some greedy folk that is another story.. as for fraud.. I think the courts would be hard pressed to prove it

Went to get mine at about 3 o clock in burton and when I gave the voucher in the lady said "how many do you want?"
I replied "one is fine" and she then gave me 2!
2 daughters now have one each to build before one disappears off to my office at work next week to join his pals...

It was a mad rush on opening at Cribbs Causeway Bristol. The queue was slow mainly because the scalpers were out in force the two people in front of me had twenty papers each - I've doubt that e-bay is going to be awash with these!!!

I missed out on today's set due to a late flight (caused by snow of all things), but it should be easy enough to pick one up on eBay or Bricklink for a couple of pounds.

Yes

So glad I got this, great way of getting a figure otherwise expensive to buy :) Probably will get a Uruk Hai and a Zombie car too. :)

I admit to buying 4-at-a-time, but only for sets that were "fillers" in the '09 Mirror giveaway... 4899 City Tractor (for the wheels) and 30000 Medic's Car (for the fig torso). Both times it was afternoon, after even the scalpers had passed them by, so I figured they were fair game :)

I'm tempted by the Mining Quad this year for the mining helmets, if I can overcome my revulsion for the rag giving them away >.<

So far I've got 1 Thor set and 2 Hawkeye's - I've decided to keep one in its bag, have already built the Thor set and one of the Hawkeyes's.

I am pretty disgusted at the ebay style scalpers - I did see a guy yesterday with LOADS of papers. In my WH SMITH they actually use a UV pen to mark an 'X' on the voucher inside so you really have to use one paper per Lego.

I may not get the Quinjet - Lego's not Lego to me without a figure. I made the mistake of forgetting the clocks went back an hour yesterday so did wonder for a moment why my shop wasn't open so had to waste 20 long mins with a Latte until they opened up!

Thanks to those who bought a few extra THOR's and made it possible for me to buy one at EBAY! I'm grateful... and happily pay a few extra quids for your inconvinience! ;-)

By in United Kingdom,

Just finished the count for Saturday's THOR only got 99 and none for the lazy people on EBAY who can't be bothered.........

By in Canada,

I have to admit, if this set wasn't for free I wouldn't be too keen on paying 5$ for the set before taxes. At only 25 pieces, even though it is a cheap alternative for those of us who just want a Thor, the price per piece ratio is terrible. Of course I'm a hypocrite who pays 5$ for other polybag sets that are roughly around the same price per piece ratio as well. Collecting LEGO Polybag sets is a very messy business.
