30017 Police boat

30017 Police boatHere is today's free set with The Sun in the UK. It's been available as part of many promotions over the world so from that point of view it is the least desirable of the selection, and arguably, being Police, the most boring.

Having said that, there are a lot of large pieces in it compared with the Super Heroes sets we've had so far and the minifig is actually quite cool. Dark blue legs are always useful, his hat is great and he's sporting one of the new life jackets that appeared last year, which is a great improvement on the earlier version. The Forest Police torso is also very nice.

My verdict today, then, is if you're passing WHS you might as well grab a few, but it's probably not worth making a special trip for.

Nice. But that neck is such a design fail.

Always happy for more wedge plate in my life.

^^ Agreed with the neck comment. It's a big design fail IMO.

^ & ^^^ I guess it has to be like that so helmets etc. can still fit on.

It seems this wave of free sets hasn't attracted the same interest as normal. I have picked up all four sets without the usual que's waiting for Smiths to open

Ditto on the neck / life vest design flaw - am sure Lego will widen the vest for the head to fit back on flush. For what its worth, a set of this size would probably retail in shops for £5 and over as is the case these days sadly. Its good for the 40p paid I'd say.

I don't like that shade of blue used for the legs or indeed torsos - it looks bland and too dark imo. I also don't like the mouth design for the head...a nice simple smiley would look much nicer.

Get ready for a storm of "RARE LEGO NECK FAIL LIFE VEST"

On the neck thing I noticed a similar thing with the 'battle damaged' Darth Vader I recently got, where a diving mask is used around his neck!

When I realised what part that was I dug out a red Aquanaut visor and was very tempted to list a 'R@RE ALL-RED Battle-Damaged Darth Vader minifig' on eBay, just for a laugh, but given the storm that accompanied the sale of some red test-moulds of the Vader helmet online I backed off from that particular prank.

In the states, this was $3.47 at Wal-Mart, so it's likely would be 2.50UK in the UK.

For someone who doesn't own any forest police, it isn't a bad little set for a forest ranger figure.

I was actually very happy with this model today, expecting it to be the most boring. I agree on the subject of the figure with everyone though, it is very nice, but the neck is a problem which ought to have been sorted out during the design phase.

@Huw,
I was going to mention this a few weeks back when I got the fishing boat from Tesco. The new life jackets are awful! They just dont allow the head to sit flush on the shoulders and have a really irritating millimeter gap. Definitely need a re-design.

Pleased with the set - I'm glad it was forest police instead of yet another regular police polybag. Very disappointed in the new life jackets though.

I don't really care about the vest, I just want the boat.

By in Australia,

Yeah, the vest is fail. But I do like it, as a cute little boat. We haven't had many of those recently.

I missed this one in the states back in March (so it is listed). Remove the vest, and I quite like the figure myself. I haven't bought much city this year, and so I haven't scooped up any of the forest rangers.
