Uruk-hai with Ballista

30211 Uruk-Hai with ballistaHere, then, is the penultimate set of the current Sun promotion and the one that many have been eagerly awaiting.

The Uruk-hai minifig is definitely the reason why, and in full armour he really does look great, and an excellent 'army builder' figure of which you can never have too many.

The ballista has some nice pieces in it, particularly the brown 1x4 curved brick which is not very common.

My WHS was fairly calm today, and in common with every other day, there was no limit on the number of papers I could buy, unlike some branches, it seems. Mind you, by 10am they'd run out of papers but still have loads of polybags left.

I hope you all managed to get as many as you wanted.

there was a big queue at my local at 7.30 this morning first time this week though .no limit on amount that you could buy and the pile soon went down .i got the 5 i was after :D

By in United Kingdom,

Queued at 0815 one in front of me and a guy sleeping in a bush Thankfully he wasn't camping out just recovering from a night out Got 5 one for myself the rest for friends kids Not bothering tomorrow as I need a lie in and already have a few Mr Baggins

By in United Kingdom,

Went to my local (Wellingborough WHSmiths) at exactly half past 8. Half the boxes had gone already meaning they must have opened at least 5 minutes early (I heard something about a secret shopper so they could be why) as there were none of the regulars I had recognized from earlier in the week and a lot smaller que. Picked up 5 one for myself the rest for trading not selling) with 5 papers however this was the first time an official printed WHSmiths notice was in front of the SUN newspapers stating only 5 Lego models, per voucher per newspaper per person.I am still unclear if they will hand out multiple models to one person if they have multiple vouchers as it says on the vouchers themselves that they are limited one per customer.

Is it me or is the large halberd slightly flexable compared to other halberds. It seems to be made out of a diffrent type of plastic.

By in United Kingdom,

No such luck for me. I hoped for a couple more to liven up a helm's deep attack (or boromir/hobbit capture), but could only buy one paper and they scribbled my coupon out. This was the first time i've ever considered picking up a few extra copies, but store flatly refused multiples.

Anybody want to share a spare? Or perhaps post me/in on my behalf the unspoiled coupon so that i can chance my luck with redeeming via post?

By in United Kingdom,

Rushden Smiths was the same as Wellingborough- Magnetobob, Limit of five per customer, the manageres told me yesterday that there had been a number of customer complaints and that head office had reprimanded the stores in some way. I got my five which is not quite an army but five more than I had!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i was buying for 3 today due to people being away, but managed to get the ones everyone wanted (just)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I got 3. Got charged for ONE paper by mistake so I was off sharpish!

By in United Kingdom,

For the first time, I visited more than one WHS - I'm shopping for a friend who can't get to the stores today. Harrow gave me my 5, but when I asked about Ninjago, said they'd run out moments before (I noticed a beaming granny with about 20 Ninjago bags, so I can't really begrudge her that). I then drove to my favourite, Greenford, where in addition to the Uruks I bought the assistant dumped 9 Ninjago polys in my carrier bag without being asked. Result! Glad I went early, though - by the time I left, the queues were getting heavy, and the car park was full.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think this set is pants (good pants mind you), unless of course LOTR is your thing. Worst of the promos so far over the last week. That said it's still pretty good for 50p, the bendy 1x2 bricks that I forget the name of are always useful pieces to have too.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Billericay WHS would only let me have 3, but all the other stores I visited let me buy 10 no problem. I'm at 85 so far. Gone home for a rest before heading out again to see if I can make it to 100.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

We will have to have a league table of Army sizes, 85 could take some beating!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Got to the Eastleigh WHS this morning at 830 just as it opened. I was the only guy there, which was odd as I had gone there on Thursday and had to queue but that was at 9am, so im guessing they opened early.

Picked up 10 poly's.

generally this week i have not had a problem. My work WHS is Havant, and there was always a queue at 9am, but I could go back on my lunch break at 1pm and was able to pick up poly's no problem.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nah, 85 is nothing; there's a guy called DeathLeech on eurobricks who's got like 20 Uruk-hai army sets and 10 orc forges+ multiple Helms deeps. But I can take consolation in the knowledge that my army cost considerably less than his! I think 100 Uruks should be enough for the 64x64 Helms deep MOC I was planning.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Durham WHSmiths was extremely civilised - I got mine at 12 noon and they still had more left!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i got twelve and thought i was being greedy... i normally get no more than 5 at a time. my local WHS told me it doesn't matter how many you want, as long as you have the vouchers to hand over.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bedford WHS were enforcing a 5-per-person maximum at 9am this morning.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There was a mixed feeling in Nottingham today, probably because I was feeling tense and slightly excited about getting an army. My local Sainsbury's had no Sun papers at 8am today so I picked up some coupons in Tesco Metro on the way into town. WHsmith at the Broadmarsh had a small queue at 9am and were limiting to three per transaction. At Victoria Centre the first box was almost empty by 9.30 but they were allowing 5 per transaction.

Beeston had a supply problem, but may have some figures tomorrow if you keep your coupon?
I was tempted to head for Chillwell, but decided to go to TRU instead, where I was able to pick up a couple more.
My army is more of a company, with 16 figures. That is more than enough for me :) :) :).

I must avoid TRU tomorrow. I spend far too much when I go there.... :}

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i wonder how many bags will you guys get tomorrow

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I wonder what does WH Smith and TRU do with the extra lego poly bags on Monday?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yeovil whs sold out by 2. They were scanning vouchers this morning, the first time I've seen this. I did tho get anyway with using vouchers from earlier in the week. I got 3

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I went to WHSmith in Gravesend and the shop assistant I got was in a right flippin' bad mood. I picked up five Suns (one each for my sons and three for a future army) and she told me I could only have four - I reminded her of the notice on the front of the papers stating maximum of five per customer.

She then demanded I open all the papers to the coupons so she could scribble on them (fair enough). Anyone would think she had a personal investment in them. Maybe she's hoping for a surplus at the end of the day for personal reasons.

I noticed she was snapping at others in the queue in front of me so I imagine her day will be filled with happy thoughts and thankful customers. Not.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Some of these quantities people are picking up are mad and slightly selfish on others but that's debatable. I don't want to judge. As long as you paid for each one and didn't use the voucher again as in 2 for 50p. no wonder people were complaining. As this is the only time ive EVER purposely brought multiples and only reuse vouchers if they have some left from the previous day.
Multiples to play and swap is fine and is what many of you are doing however multiples to sell on is not cool

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

10 uruk hais, yeah... the ghost army is getting bored. Plus i found out whats gonna be rattiling under the christmas tree this year...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My local WHS had sold out by 10am they don't enforce the one or even 5 per customer so got 10. I know that the main WHS in the galliries are limiting to 5.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I got ten at the Eastbourne WHSmith, exactly what I wanted, they had loads left at lunchtime and it seemed no busier than the standard weekend traffic in these places. The number of boxes they had was ridiculous, while I was in the queue I tried counting all the ones labelled Saturday and counted twenty-two, then they brought out some more, I would say about thirty boxes in total. Great little model!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My local WHS was sold out by 2:30pm but I'm happy with my haul of 85. Now to bricklink some pikes and crossbows to replace those horrible halberds.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

May I refer those with oodles of unwanted polys/coupons to my previous comment posted at number 5 on this board.
I will now leave the room before the comments like "I don't like Lord of Rings, but got 500 for ebay" start appearing, and making me feel the urge to bash my head against the keyboard. :o)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sorry to hear about that - you were very unlucky. Most branches were giving them out like candy. Some tips: If the shop has multiple cashiers you can purchase from each without them noticing. Take 2 different jackets / glasses and hats so you can pop back to the car to change your disguise between purchases.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^^ Your locals stock may of lasted longer if double digit figures weren't being claimed by so many customers.

^^ If you PM me though the forum @legomatt I will post you my 4 tokens from today as well as a number to call if you missed any sets I was given.

By in United States,

@voyanuitoa: Hasn't the large halberd always been more flexible than standard ABS minifig weapons? I remember them being that way since as long ago as Dragon Masters (1993 or 1994, I think-- one of my earliest LEGO themes!)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@bluemoose - I was at the Bedford store at 08:45 this morning, and heard one of the staff members say "Only five per person, and make sure you clock their faces so that they don't come back again!".

My fiancée and I went in separately leaving the other one outside with the greyhound and got five each. Annoyingly they wouldn't let me pay for on of yesterday's Ninja (which I managed to miss) without dropping one of the Uruk Hais, so I'm still Ninjaless. Ah well :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well I've had a fun day. Got up at 5am (was supposed to be 6am but my Mum's phone was an hour ahead...) and at 7:20 I was on my way for the Bus. I got into town around 8am (This is Edinburgh by the way) and I went to both the Queensferry Street and Waverly Station stores, where they told me it was only high street chains. So I got a bus to Toys R Us on the outskirts of town, and received my first two Uruks! (I said one was for a friend). I then tried WHSmith at Kinnaird park, but it didn't open for another hour, so I bused myself back to Cameron Toll Shopping Centre and there I managed to pick up another two (Again, I said one was for a friend) So then I got on a very long bus trip to the Gyle shopping Centre from there (Thanks goodness I had Monty Python on my iPod to keep me going! I reached the Gyle at Midday, and they still had them, so I got one (the guy was standing handing them out so he could put people over to the self checkout (which I failed to use because they are horrible!) Then I tried WHSmith Books up from the WHSmith itself (I really did this to kill time) where I was told only the store I had just come from. So I went back and had a token to spare and to my luck, the man who had been handing out Uruks had given them to a pretty lassie (LOL) who took the token, so that was 6 Uruks aquired. I bused myself back to Cameron Toll (again Monty Python helped pass the journey, to find out that there were no more left. (2pm) So I bused myself to Fort Kinnaird and went to Toys R Us, and to my surprise, when the woman saw me (She had served me in the morning), she pulled me over to the side and gave me two other ones, saying that she wasn't meant to, but that I seemed to be the only one getting them. So I thanked her, then headed to use the remaining two tokens in WHSmith at the Fort, and they were sold out (2.45pm) So I just got the bus home where I had a phonecall and a facebook message saying that my friend and my Gran had got me one each. So my current total stands at 10. My Parents tried to get another one at the Gyle but the sign was up at the door saying "Sorry, No More LEGO Orks" (yes, they spelt Orc wrong...) So that concludes my story, in all I spent all of £2 (bought 4 Suns in all, 3 of which were sold to me without the token being taken out so used these tokens and of course the two surprise freebs.) I'm really chuffed with my purchase (I think 85 is a bit over the top, no offence) and I can't wait to get the Helms Deep set so this army can storm it! xD

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ wow...... @javert24601 you really must of wanted them bad ...thats a lot of bus trips and walking.....me on the other hand thought ,whsmiths would be open early so i got into town at 7.00 with my 5 little tokens didnt bring any money or a jumper as i thought i would not need it, as i will be in and back home within 30 mins.. to find out the shop does not open till 8.30 so i had to sit on a bench for 1 and a half hours and it was bloody cold with only a roll up to keep me warm... couldnt even buy a coffee as i didnt have any money on me and mcdonalds was right by it :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Javert24601: you are one committed Lego addict! Helm's Deep awaits you!

How many people are thinking of building up a Frodo army from tomorrow's set? Hobbits are hearty folk afterall ; )

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm used to the walking and bus trips, I enjoy looking at and admiring the scenery from the window anyway :D Back on Topic, my friend in Sunderland said she was lucky to get one as the queue was out the door... Oh and I've been on a lego forum elsewhere (I won't say which one), and someone has bagged themselves 200 Uruks....To me that's greedy on the other people who wanted it...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ I agree, 200 is obscene. I cannot believe that anybody would have the nerve to go up to the counter and demand 200. I felt awkward carrying 5 papers!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm only going to get 1 Frodo, and this is all the LOTR stuff I have apart from Weathertop and Gandalf Arrives, so my collection is just starting. :) I'm happy with what I have managed to obtain though! Just feel bad for those who didn't get thanks to the lunatics forking out £250...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would have loved this set but I was too late :( they'd all gone. I really should have got there sooner.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This was the only set I really wanted many multiples of I ended up grabbing 11 of them,no way am I going to sell these such a good part for Helms Deep. Everyday it was very civilised and after 1st two on Saturday and Sunday they didn't cross the tokens out what so ever, paying staff to cross tokens out wasn't very worthwhile. Yep the Suns all went into the bin and that was kind of over flooding aswell haha. I arrived their at 9:15,got up about 15 minutes earlier and I was fine :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I had a good day in edinburgh , picked up 14 in total with my good lady wife being the second shopper :-). I went to livingston WH Smith first ( my local store ) and picked up 3 each and then onto WH in the Gyle shopping centre, they had a sign up at 09.15 saying none left so never even tried. Having read Javerts post it seems this may have been a sign from the previous day as he managed to get some later in the day. Then onto Fort Kinnaird picked up another 3 each and then "cashed" in two coupons at TRU from papers that my wife bought from our local newsagents.

I was lucky that all assistants were happy and friendly so all in all a nice experience. I will only be picking up a couple of frodos. It's been a good week, I normally only picked up 4 of each of the other sets and I am one happy guy :-)

Gravatar
By in France,

You UK guys are very lucky with this Sun promotion. Lot of very nice polybags this time.
If any of you wish to share 1 or 2 Uruk with an unlucky froggy (TLG seems to ignore us here ...) feel free to contact me as I would gladly pay a reasonable price to get some evil soldiers. Thanks.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sounds like you had a good time Weebaldy, still you had Livingston so you had more stores to try than I did, but who's complaining? :D It's nice to know I'm not the only "big kid" who went hunting for them :D (I'm a TFOL btw) It's odd how Toys R Us and WHSmith's shipments were different. At Toys R Us in Fort Kinnaird, there were 3 big boxes of Uruks behind the counter, I saw as the lady collected the toys and I know they weren't from previous days because they had the same code the poly bag has on it (37M2) and in WHSmith, they only seemed to have 1 box at each store.... That could explain why I was given two for free... but it doesn't matter because it won't change the fact I'm really happy :D

EDIT: I also noticed how nice the shop assisstants were, I've heard stories of really horrible ones down in England, Scotland is lucky to have people like that!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Got to my nearest WHS in south London at 8.26am. The store opens at 8.30 but there was no queue to speak of. I got 20 uruks, 1 minifig per copy purchased. The staff were perfectly happy to sell me as many uruks as I liked.

I then went to a couple of other WHSs that were on my way to where I was going anyway and bought another 12 uruks. So that's 32 in all!

I figure I'll use 30 of them in my display collection and keep two in reserve. I also have the uruk army set which I intend to display.

I will only be getting a few Frodos tomorrow. For one thing, I can't stand fleshies so will need to replace the head and hands (and colour the neck-line). For another, I don't intend to amass an army of Mr Frodos.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I went up to my local WH Smith at about 12:30pm, but had discovered they'd all sold out, so no Uruk Hai for me. Tis a shame, as it's the only poly bag I was after.

Was only planning on picking up a couple, one for me, one for my son. Oh well, I guess some of the selfish 85-250 scalper brigade live in Wolverhampton!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

MY WORD! I'm not saying names, but I asked the person who obtained 200 how he got around so quickly and managed to get so many... he sent this reply

A - I live in London, there are about 20 of those stores down here
B - I got the train to other cities so I could buy them at stores in those places too
C - The Furthest I went was Wolverhampton, where I only picked up 15....
D - Why do you care? It's my money, I'll buy as many as I want to....
E - I have more than you

This individual really has some nerve (and a terrible amount of money...) What an *******e!

sorry for the language but seriously?! Back on Topic, my Gran phoned to say she'll pick up a Frodo for me tomorrow if she can,(which is very nice of her considering she hates going over the town and she's just all of a sudden decided she will get one for me) and my Dad is also going to get one, so I may have 2 Frodos after all :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I got 4 from my Toys r us in Swansea. Great additions to my Lego Lord of the Rings collection.

By in United Kingdom,

^^^^^^ I hate to think what that scumbag did with all those papers.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The uruks look great en masse: Just totally bad ass. But the sea of halberds isn't ideal. In the movie most of the uruks were armed with long pikes (as a defence against any cavalry charge by the Rohirrim). So I've bricklinked some black 2714 bars and 4497 spears to make some long pikes - also 10 crossbows. That should mix things up and add some variety.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If I were in the UK I would definitely get this, but unfortunately I'm not. Does anyone know where/if I can get this in the US?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I got 20 uruk-hai for my helms deep im getting and i think I will pick up 20 more on sunday. I have to admit that even 20 is enough though, I even know how to build the catapult off by heart!

As my mum sells lego and is top on ebay, at the end of the day she can buy the leftovers, but she didn't really bother buying some this promotion but she bought something like 215 firebirds (she regrets that) 150 alien conquest jets and lots more last promotion.

It's strange how the begining of the week how they have lots of promos left, and at the end they have none.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^^^^^^^^javert24601 That is a very strange way he did of collecting promos. I just wait till the end of the day and buy the 200 or so leftovers! this way other people can buy them, and there wont be none left so people will get upset, it's the fairest way.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

In mine they let a guy walk out with two boxes of bags (altogether 100) for £50 at thet start of the day and another woman with a whole box and i heard her say to her children 3 of them "are you happy now!".I managed to snag three bags but i don't think everyone would have been so lucky.Personally i felt slightly apalled that they let one guy walk out with two whole boxes and thought the fact that the woman bought that many uruk hai for 3 children was slightly selfish as many other people just hoped to get one and as three boxes were gone at the start of the day it may have been difficult for others.I was fine the figures are really cool and will make fine additions to my uruk hai when i finally get helms deep! :)

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Having all sent to 'Stralia in a few days, I don't need to worry. I think people who take 5 or more form one retailer is not fair - share the love of the polybags, just buy 3 or so, and that's enough. That guy who got 200 has pretty much taken 80% chance of anyone else getting one. What would you do with 200, anyway?!

The only time Australia had a deal was a Series 4 minifigure packet with the Sydney Morning Herald, which is $1.50 here, I bought a few, and sold the papers to other people.

Good luck tomorrow to all you UK AFoLs and fellow TFoLs with the Frodo poly.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Just been on ebay it is awash with urukhai with extortionate prices up to £4.99!!!!!!!! Lego should shut theese people down freebies should not be sold its unethical and morally wrong! Especially as the person who brought 100 in my branch didn't buy the papers he just brought the two boxes which breaks the rules of the promotion! Someone should email lego!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

True they probably wouldn't be able to do much but selling them on ebay for £3.99 + is morally wrong as theese were freebies! It is simply selfish buying many promos which could have prevented others from getting them, people who wanted just one!!! Then forcing people to resort to paying extortionate ammounts of money for things that they should have and could have got for free when they bought the paper if not for the selfishness of the person who bought a load just to put them on ebay!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

^ They paid for it - they do whatever they want.

I think the max should be 5, and maybe a "no resale" sticker.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I missed the Thor polybag, so if anyone wants to swap uruk hai, the ninja or a boat please do PM me :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Just back from my local WHSmith for Frodo and for the 1st day they have had a limit of 5 and were crossing out the vouchers, which I think is fair enough. I was already limiting myself to 5 and I feel comfortable with this as they have had left overs from the previous days each morning. I personally don't object to people selling things on ebay, I used to live 50 miles from the nearest WHSmith or TRU and ebay was by far the cheapest way for me to get them.

IMHO 100+ is way too many, they should have made they carry the 100+ papers as well.

I have a few of each to trade if people have any other interesting poly bags.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ok, I picked up two papers, got two figs. But after reading some of the stories above, I'd be more than happy if the stores employed a strict 'One toy per original voucher, per customer only' policy.
The store that sold two whole boxes to one person must be in breach of the agreement/contract they have with the newspaper. This store should be reported.
To thoese who are bragging about about grabbing 20+ at a time, I hope you get to see the disapointed faces of the kids that you've deprived. Just because some people have the money to make multiple purchases, it does not make it right.

I thought the logo community was better than this. Shame on you.

Stew.

Wow, I'm just gob-smacked that the scumbag scalper that bought 200 newspapers, just to sell the freebies on to make a profit on Bricklink/eBay, came as far as my home town of Wolverhampton yesterday, and further deprived me of a chance to get an Uruk hai.

Name and shame this person please, so we can all avoid his auctions/Bricklink store!

By in Europe,

The derby toys r us branch was pretty civilised with about 20 people in the que. I got there with 5 minutes before opening with 10 people infront, most of which were children and a few bored looking parents. I managed to get 4 urukhais as they were strict on 2 vouchers per person. People who had 3 had to give in 2 and go to the back. I just put a new jacket on though after getting the first bunch. A neat little set and a great addition to my helms deep. I agree 200 is absolutely ridiculous and unfair on those that cued up to get these. This is the most polybags I've ever picked up in one go though. I would never buy one on eBay for £5 though...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The greed of this is ridiculous. apart from uruk hai ( which i never got anyway, my dad did) i only got 2, one for me and one for my little brother. Those poor, deprived chileren!

^ This kind of situation (given away object that has a market value) always attracts selfish people. And there is always an extreme story (like this guy grabbing 200+ polybags) that converges anger of other people (especially if they couldn't get the 1 they wanted).

But do not focus on the dark side of the story. Better keep in mind that there is a lot of nice people ready to share and help others. I salute this spirit from Adeboygreen. This will make my boy really happy as I can't afford a LOTR set for now (he's actually reading "The Hobbit" and can't stop talking about it ...).

Once again : a big "Thank You" to Adeboygreen.

By in United Kingdom,

Gutted, my son's just opened his set today & the minifig body & one of the cross-bow pieces is missing :(
Hopefully they are spare parts you can get from Lego

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't mean to brag here, but I'm now on 11 Uruk Hai because Inverness WHSmith didn't sell out of them (strangely), and my Gran was in today, so the lady who had served her on Saturday, remembered who she was and had kept one behind the till to give to her in case she saw her again... That was most kind of her! I really was not expecting 5 let alone 11!!!

@chr15rey if you go onto LEGO's replacement part website, you can order the parts that are missing from there as they are all on there :D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Javert24601
Managed to order the missing pieces from Lego, was not sure if I would get them, I tried to order spare wings & antenna for Twitch from Toy story set but I was told they were un-availible as it was a limited set!
