Advent day 11

Posted by ,

Advent day 12So the wheels weren't completely useless after all! Neither was the mechanic: he was needed to attach the wheels, presumably :-)

Actually this is a fairly decent little quad-bike model given the number of parts. I think it would have looked better with some cross-country tyres rather than the slicks.

Advent day 12Today's Friends model is suitably cute and presumably a gift for a pooch we'll be getting later in the month.

Advent day 12I presume this is some sort of hardware found on Hoth? I'm sure one of you will know what it's supposed to be.

City -- 9, excellent model that showcases what's possible with a handful of parts.
Friends -- 8, seasonal and cute.
Star Wars -- 5, not immediately obvious what it is, so loses points.

The Star Wars one looks like a radar gun. They did a good one with the last AT-AT (8129; it's the bit that's not the AT-AT! :P), and the pic on next year's Hoth set looks good too. Unfortunately, this one looks like an even smaller version of the laughable one in 7879! Yes, it's only a calendar so it can't have many parts. But surely given how much the 7879 version was mocked they should have just not bothered to try!
I think 5 is quite generous, especially as it's only got 6 parts - less than most of the micro models! Last year's Star Wars calendar was really good, but I'm glad I've not gone for this one.

Well I'm glad it wasn't only me that had no clue what the "dishy-doodad" is meant to be!
No recollection at all of anything similar in the "universe"...

By in United States,

I LOVED the City model today! Today's SW model will go good with battle packs.

Its a lawnmower with a satelite dish...

By in United Kingdom,

This Star Wars calendar is developing into a bit of a joke really, we have had four good things in my opinion (the Gungan Warrior, Imperial Officer, Vulture Droid and Naboo Starfighter), the rest has been either distinctly average or really poor. I am sure it is supposed to be one of the Hoth dish turrets, but it is an awful attempt, what do you expect with six parts though?

By in Sweden,

It's called a "Hoth Blaster Station" on Bricklink, though I suppose there's no official name or anything.

Anyway, the little quad bike is pretty nice considering it's a "calendar model" (i.e. a kid has to be able to build it just by looking at the illustration on the flap). I do wish they'd thrown in two 1x1s with grips in place of the white 1x2 plate though so you could attach equipment on the back of it.

The city I thought was quite good toda but the Star Wars one delivers another lack lustre model.

@Graysmith:
The Star Wars canon name is the Atgar P-Tower.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It certainly reminds me of the weapons used in the early Lego star wars games! I believe it is a small mobile 'turret' used by the empire in the battle of hoth. It actually looks quite good if you know what it is!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Starwarsgeek500 - nice knowledge! You've earned your name!
The problem with that is the weapon is meant to be taller than its user. Shame, eh!

By in Canada,

Honestly, today's Star Wars model is pitiful. How you can rate it higher than yesturday's AT-AT?

The other two models are pretty decent. The wheels were put to a good use.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Now that we've used the wheels on the car, the sack barrow seems quite lonely and yesterday's ten pieces has turned into two, because honestly, who isn't going to put their wheels on the car?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

THE "HARDWARE" IS A HOTH DISH TURRET, WHICH ANY STAR WARS FAN WOULD KNOW...... Not trying to be annoying, but come on! obvious!

Gravatar
By in United States,

How can you not recognize the Hoth (yes, you're right) Dish Turret gun? Yes, the handlebars on the back may throw you off, but I mean talk about EASILY RECOGNIZABLE!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just because it is recognizable, does not make it good. I agree though, yesterday's AT-AT should be rated higher than today, if only because the four telescope pieces will have more use for MOCing.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

another generous rating for the Star Wars one Huw! Friends calendar is still outperforming Star Wars by some way!

By in Europe,

I thought that the starwars was good today and a good accesory for the officer.

Friends is still way out in front with the points (82 total, 7.45 daily average), City and Star Wars are close together. (74 total, 6.73 daily av for City; 72 total 6.55 daily av for SW).

For the Star Wars model I knew immediately what it was. True Empire Strike Back fans know this stripped down to the bones version very well.
I believe it's meant to be this... http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/1.4_FD_P-Tower_laser_cannon

"When the P-Tower gets ready to fire, you can feel the charge, hear the hum, see the dish light up…it's a moment of hope. And then the blast just bounces off an AT-AT and you realize that the situation is hopeless…"

I had no idea what the heck that SW thing was, either. But yay, we have the internet to tell us :).

@ZipforBananas:
Yeah! Of course, the SW calendar ha a reputation for being nearly worthless for a lot of it.

City- 8
Friends-5
Star Wars-0
:-)
I had no idea what the Star Wars was but my 7 year old immediately said it's a laser. The Friends would get a 7 if the dog paw could be centered on the box.

LegoDad42, thanks for the links!

By in United Kingdom,

My son obviously agrees with Huw on the quad bike model, he left the slicks on the sack truck and went straight to his LEGO draw and fished out a set of wheels shod with off road tyres, it does look much better that way.

I think the radar gun will redeem itself (like the wheels in CITY did) when it gets someone to man it... then it is useful at least. I welcome it to my Hoth display. We don't know, it's entirely possible that the rebels had some small, one-man radar guns lying around that we just didn't see in the movie, I am happy to think that, so I don't mind if it isn't accurately sized or anything :)

City: I'm surprised you gave it such a high score...

Friends: Ok... it's a little bland, but still...

Star Wars: ...that's not a reason to deduct points; nearly any "normal" Star Wars fan can tell you what that is!! =P Well, you might not consider some of us as "normal." =P

^Yep, that round tile has a cross thing in the middle. Not exactly a stud, but it works pretty much the same.
