LEGO announces next generation Mindstorms at CES

Mindstorms EV3

15 years after the release of the original Mindstorms, LEGO has announced the next generation, called EV3, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

It looks to be a massive upgrade from NXT, both in terms of hardware and software, and a big change is that you don't need a PC (or Mac) to program it: you can do so on the EV3 itself or from your iOS or Android device.

LEGO Mindstorms EV3 will be available in the second half of 2013 and will have a suggested retail price of $349.99(USD), €349.99 (EUR) and $399.99 (CAD).

Head on over to TechnicBricks to find out all you need to know, then read the official press release at Engadget.

Woah, woah woah. I guess they are not targeting us people with lower budgets? This set would be all the LEG0 you'd get.

By in Canada,

And I just bought one, hah.

Time to ship it back to LEGO.

Why ship it back? The new one doesn't ship for six months. Besides you got PARTS!!! Which are the limiting factor in these designs, not the expensive electronic pieces.

Awesome I can program it with my tablet :D That is an evil looking robot though. Squinty red eyes :P

Doesn't appear that the "computer brick" uses a rechargeable battery to make the brick thinner for smaller creations, although it would run up the cost. Maybe they come out with that later.

One to pick up in Florida in November at that price I think.

If only I had the money… :P

This is welcome news since you can pretty much make a more sophisticated robot using non-Lego kits and electronics (ever heard of the arduino?). Glad to see Lego is staying ahead of the pack.

Awesome! The robot looks like Johnny 5 from short circut. At least the second movie anyways.

Here's a good video on the EDUCATION side of things from LEGO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51VJOGIZoBs

Keep in mind that the EDUCATION and RETAIL versions of the software will be different. (Different pieces and possibly some different sensors, I'm having trouble finding out what the differences are but I imagine they're listed somewhere)

And here's a blog with some EDUCATION models and sensors http://thenxtstep.blogspot.nl/2013/01/education-ev3-so-cool.html

Get it in October when S@H has double points so the set would be more like $320ish.

It looks stupid with the mohawk, and I would pass on putting the stickers on, otherwise a nice sight to see.

$350? Dayum.

By in United States,

Funny, I LOVE the mohawk! Then again i'm just a lego punk paramedic, so maybe i can make an iv pump out of one. i've been avoiding mindstorms but this might be the end of it.

By in United States,

Way too expensive. I thought the current version was expensive, guess I was wrong.

Coolest mohawk ever!

Apparently, according to education.lego.com, LEGO education is already selling EV3 kits, sensors, accesories, and software on a preorder basis. The site also provides a better look at the sensors and servos. According to the website, EV3 will be released through them Fall Semester 2013

If ordered then@1360, 1230, that 699 points for you, and add a small set, that's like getting $70 back.
