London Toy Fair Report, part 2

CraggerAs we all know, Legends of Chima seems to be receiving the lion's share of the LEGO marketing budget at the moment so I guess it was no surprise that Craggar (left), and Laval, were 'guarding' the entrance to the fair.

Anyway, on with the survey of what was on show, starting with Legends of Chima...

Legends of Chima

As you know, there's a large number of Legends of Chima sets in the shops already, and there's loads more to come. The second wave of Speedorz (70104-70106) will be launched in March, so if you do plan on buying them all, don't hang about buying the current ones as they'll disappear from the shelves fairly soon.

Then in June, the next wave will be launched. Another three Speedorz and another starter set. This is when they become interesting because new characters are introduced.

  • 70107, Skunk Attack, features Skinnet the skunk, as seen in episode 1 of the TV series.
  • 70108, Royal Roost, contains Laval.
  • 70109, Whirling Vines, contains Gorzan, from the gorilla tribe.
  • 70114, another starter set contains Eris and Rawsom, who might be a new character, or might have just been Rawzom spelled incorrectly.

The six 'buildable figures' looked absolutely terrible, IMO. A cross between the Ben 10 and the Super Heroes ones. They are out in August. I'll say no more about them...

There are four more Chima sets out in August, which look a whole lot better:

  • 70009, Worriz' Combat Lair, £60, is a 8-wheeled contraption that breaks into five sections. It comes with 6 figures: Eris, Grizzam, Windra, Wakz, Wilhurt and Worriz.
  • 70007, Eglor’s Twin Bike, £20, is a neat looking 2-wheeled vehicle being chased by Razcal in a small helicopter.
  • 70008, Gorzan's Jungle Striker, £50, is a gorilla-like mecha which looks pretty cool. It comes with 4 minifigs: Rizzo, Gorzan, Gardo, G'Loona, who's a female.
  • Finally, 70010, the Lion Chi Temple, £100 is an impressive looking structure which won a best toy award today. You can see pictures of it here. It comes with7 figures: Lagravis, Laval, Longtooth, Eris (she seems to crop up everywhere, doesn't she!), Cragger, Crawley and Razar.

Then in September, there are three more Speedorz:

  • 70110, Tower Target, containing Grizzam.
  • 70111, Swamp Jump, containing Furty, who appears to be a fox.
  • 70112, Croc Jump, containing Crug.

I hope you have deep pockets if you intend getting them all!

If I'm not mistaken, the new minifigs in the June onwards sets are:

  • Skinnet, Furty
  • Lagravis
  • Windra
  • Gorzan, Gardo, G'Loona, Grizzam

City

The new City sub-themes for later in the year are coast guard and cargo airport. The coast guard sets are, apparently, slightly juniorised and aimed at a younger audience. They do appear to comprise mostly large single-use pieces (boat hulls, aircraft cockpits, etc.). The coast guard vehicles in the sets are white and orange with blue accents. The five sets are:

  • 60011, Surfer Rescue, jet ski, 2 figures, shark.
  • 60012, 4 x 4 and diving boat, 2 figures.
  • 60013, Coast Guard Helicopter. This looked like the the most interesting of the five, the helicopter uses a new cockpit piece that, while juniorised, looks pretty good. The helicopter is rescuing a wind surfer. 2 figures.
  • 60015, Coast Guard Plane, seaplane rescuing fishing boat, 3 figures.
  • 60014, Coast Guard Patrol, the largest set, quite a lot in this one: large floating boat, RIB, rock and lighthouse, small helicopter, sharks.

The cargo airport sets were far more interesting. They are green and white:

  • 60019, Stunt Plane, is actually a bit out of place because it doesn't really go with the rest of the sets in terms of theme or colour. It'll be £10 and features a black/red/white single-prop plane and a small ground support vehicle.
  • 60020, Cargo Truck, £25, is a 'great vehicle': a 6-wheeled truck, an excellent orange fork-lift truck and a couple of pallets. A superb set by the looks of it.
  • 60021, Cargo Heliplane, £25, features the new cockpit piece also used in the coast guard helicopter and has end-of-wing mounted rotors. It looks to be supporting forest logging operations as the set comes with logs and a guy with a chainsaw.
  • 60022, Cargo Terminal, £70, contains an absolutely huge cargo plane, the largest LEGO has made by the looks of things, at least 40-studs long I would estimate. It also contains various ground support vehicles, including a conveyer truck for loading the pallets, and also a control tower.

Finally for City, 60023 is an interesting 'City Starter Set' which contains an ambulance, fire engine, a police motorbike and 5 minifigs, all for just £20. I think this is the first time we've seen all three emergency services in one set, isn't it? Shame it didn't also have a coast guard vehicle and an AA van in it, too :-)

Advent calendars

Three Advent calendars again. The City one seems to be more varied than the last two we've had. The Star Wars one features a Santa Jango Fett. The Friends one, probably more of the same...

Ninjago

There are NO more new Ninjago sets this year.

The Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger sets were on display but not all of the minifigs. All except the smallest contain the Lone Ranger and Tonto, and apparently they are different in each set, although they said that about Jack Sparrow in the POTC sets and that turned out not to be the case. We have good pictures of them so I won't describe them.

In part three, I will cover Castle, Galaxy Squad, Super Heroes, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Stay tuned!

Chi Temple looks great!

Gravatar
By in United States,

CHI Temple actually looks decent. I posted a (somewhat good) MOC on Brickipedia. I really like the look of Lagravis, but why the new armor?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Castle? Castle is back? Oh my.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So Ninjago must git new sets in 2014...
Can't wait for part three!
@UtarEmpire,
Not a return of Fantasy Era but a new 'Castle'(Confusing right?) theme with basically recolored Kingdoms fractions... >.<

By in Bolivia,

The temple looks very plain.

By in United Kingdom,

Thanks! Couple of quick questions:

What does 70108 Royal Roost contain? The Speedorz had some alright mini builds in them, and that sounds interesting.

In the smallest City set with the surfer, can you describe what that fig was like? As in male or female, hair or hat, any new prints?

And I know you said not all LR figs were on display, but can you confirm whether the Native American in the Silver Mine was male or female? I think people were interested to know as it would be the first dark skinned female minifigure ever.

By in Hungary,

Santa Jango?! What the heck!

Gravatar
By in United States,

So instead of them giving us a new Jango Fett they give us Santa Jango? Give us Santa Vader next year please!

Gravatar
By in United States,

If the '08 Coast Guard sets are anything to go by, I'll try picking up one or two of the new ones. And yes, it is a bit of a shame that you didn't talk more about the Chima Figures, but I'm sure you had 'bigger fish to fry'.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is the Chima Lion Temple a new color? or is that just another tan/orange slightly tweaked by lighting/photography?

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

^^^I'm sure one of the new summer SW set contains a normal Jango Fett figure.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

No info or pics of the new Castle Theme coming out in august this year?

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Star Wars calendar sounds interesting. I'm really liking the sound of the City Cargo theme. As for coast guard, I'll probably pass as I own all the 2008 ones. Chima sounds interesting except the figures which sound terrible and I won't be buying the speedorz. Roll onnthebbigger next report

By in United Kingdom,

Wish I could have gone! Were there any details of the City set Town Square? Disappointed that the city sets seen to get more and more juniorised! Creator sets seem to be the only way to get any none police/fire sets these days...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

from looking at the images of the lion temple it appears you've mistaken ewald for eris. just thought I'd point that out. It seems dissapointing we get no new crocodile minifigures though :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I have to say I'm disappointed at the news that the Coast Guard sets will be [more] juniorised [than usual]. Coast Guard has to be my favourite City Subthme, and after a 5 year gap that isn't the best news.

By in United States,

Prices of the Coast Guard sets from Brick Fanitics:
60011 - Surfer Rescue£4.99 (US:$7)
60012 - 4×4 and Diving Boat£9.99 ($15 US)
60013 - Helicopter £24.99 ($40 US)
60014 – Coast Guard Patrol £59.99 ($80 US)

Didn't have prices for 60025 or 60027 (the 2 race City sets) Though, by the box size seen in leaked images they could could be 25UK/$40 by my guesses.

Note: US prices are estimates.

I like the CHI Temple, it looks quite reminiscent of set 8078, Portal of Atlantis (which I love). A more varied City calendar sounds excellent, and a Santa Jango Fett sounds fun so I am happy to hear that. Somewhere I read that we would be getting a young Boba Fett as the exclusive Minifigure in that Advent Calendar, so I am pleased to hear that we are actually getting a Christmas themed figure. All in all, rather good so far I would say, but the items which will really interest me are in part 3...

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

^^^ That's right. Set 60021 Cargo heliplane is an Osprey for civilian purposes.

So 60025 Grand Prix Truck and 60027 Monster Truck Transporter seem to be exlusive sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@The_Creator: Actually I didn't really have the 2009 Castle factions in mind when I posted that; I'm just a fan of the Castle banner in general. If it's more Kingdoms, I say bring it on!

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I wonder why they're heading back to larger more juniorised parts. That journey didn't end well last time...
A City starter set with ambulance, fire truck and police bike sounds great cause really, you don't get enough of the emergency services in other sets... :-S Why not do a starter set with two plain cars, a plain motorbike, two bicycles and some trees and lamp posts?

Darth Santa, anybody?

> I think it's pretty bad that you won't even list the ultrabuild figures just because you don't like them

They are already in the database.

> What does 70108 Royal Roost contain?

Not much, it looks like a small frangible castle to aim at and knock down.

> In the smallest City set with the surfer, can you describe what that fig was like?

Male, can't remember torso print, Dastan hair

> from looking at the images of the lion temple it appears you've mistaken ewald for eris.

The material I have here says it's Eris, but that could have changed of course, since it's preliminary.

> Are we talking about a tilt-rotor aircraft like the V-22 Osprey?

Yes we are

By in Sweden,

The Chi Temple looks absolutely horrendous compared to say 8078 Portal of Atlantis (which had some similar features like stairs and face in the center). Easily the worst-looking Chima set thus far. Can't imagine anyone paying £100 for that. Yikes!

Happy to hear the Coast Guard Helicopter will have the same cockpit piece as the Cargo Heliplane. Even if it's one big piece, it does look really nice to me, far better than previous such pieces they've used for cockpits.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yay Coast Guard is back! (At least, I hope the sets will be worthy of a "yay"...)

Gravatar
By in United States,

^Give the man a break. Huw was very informative overall and that specific info will surely be covered somewhere. I say this as a big fan of ultrabuild who wished to know more about them myself.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw, could you elaborate on the Chima fox figure possibly? Does it have a tail? And does Skinnet come with a tail piece?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm starting to lose track of all these Chima-tribes! :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

No more Ninjago?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I want the Lagravis figure

Gravatar
By in United States,

That Chima set look really bad, but the mech sounds really nice.

"The coast guard sets are, apparently, slightly juniorised and aimed at a younger audience. They do appear to comprise mostly large single-use pieces (boat hulls, aircraft cockpits etc.) The coast guard vehicles in the sets are white and orange with blue accents."

So.... it's just like the last theme? Last Cargo and CG had big boat parts and plane parts.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

can i see some pictures

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I heard there be a rhino tribe from the tv show.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Huw can you describe Santa Jango a bit? What makes this minifigure "Santa-ish"? Red and white armor painting? Backpack instead of his jetpack? Thank you.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Like many of the figs from licensed sets, he wasn't on display, probably because LEGO has not finished making him.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can you confirm if the Lone Ranger 79110 mining set has straight narrow gauge track elements in it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes! Foxes! I feel vindicated as elsewhere I suggested foxes would make a perfect addition... But on which side...?

@JamesBenjamin The color is the same as on Laval's Royal Fighter, Bright Light Orange. The Chi temple looks neat but not quite as "green/blue" as I was hoping, based on all the promo graphics for the land of Chi. Maybe the Crocs base will feature some nice greenery. Also, can the RRP be confirmed yet? Here it says £100, on the site with the photos it says £89. The latter would put it at $120, yes? I don't quite see that many pieces, maybe $100 worth?

EDIT: Another gander at the photos and I'm thinking there could be quite a bit hidden behind the lion's mouth/gate.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks @brickarmor! I don't have any of that color yet, so i didn't quite recognize it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anyone know if Windra is a wolf or eagle? Is G'Loona the ONLY female introduced? If so that's dissapointing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm also disappointed not to see any meaningful coverage of the Chima constraction sets and Hero Factory sets here, but then again, I suppose what coverage there is of the Chima buildable figures tells us basically what we could have expected from a more thorough analysis: thoughtless, narrow-minded space-filler. Now, I'm not saying the Chima constraction sets are works of art (they have several flaws from what I've seen; though of course the idea of any flawless set is a fiction), but frankly it doesn't take liking a set to find redeeming value in it. Even comments as vague as "Lots of transparent blue elements for Hero Factory builders", or "neat sword blade pieces", or "a good parts pack for wing/claw pieces" could have been more informative than comments that tell us little more than "These are constraction sets, and I've hated other constraction sets like them; therefore, I hate these as well".

@Zemata: Even if there's only one new female character in the summer, that's still three female characters in one year of sets. Granted, Chima's huge cast of characters means it might not be doing much for the overall gender ratios, but I still think that's a lot better than the female representation in many play themes.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You said AA Van? That could make an interesting set in it's 'elf. (LOL!)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Zemata All Chima characters have names that start with their tribe, thus Windra would be a wolf.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Zemata All of the names of the characters in chima begin with the same letter their animal begins with. For example, Laval is a Lion so his name begins with an L. so following this it seems Windra will be a Wolf.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Brickarmor sorry it seems you beat me to that explanation. I didn't realise until after I wrote it.
