London Toy Fair Report, part 4

Posted by ,

London Toy FairThis picture is taken from the gallery above the LEGO stand. As you can see virtually all of it was covered over thereby preventing photos from above. They really are paranoid, aren't they!

In this final Toy Fair report, I will cover Star Wars, Friends, Games and anything else I can remember. So, read on...

Star Wars

The Star Wars sets were the usual mix of the fantastic and the mediocre and ranged from must-have OT sets to obscure vehicles that nobody will recognise. However, again as usual, the minifigs in them all are stunning. Not many of them were on display, probably because they were not manufactured yet, instead all we had were pictures of them.

There will be nine sets released, not including 'power' items offered to specific retailers, which are not shown at the show.

  • 75015, Corporate Alliance Tank Droid, £20, featuring a new Jango Fett (at last!) a clone trooper and a battle droid.
  • 75016, Homing Spider Droid, £30, Adi Galia, Clone Trooper, Super Battle Droid.
  • 75017, Yoda vs Dooku playset, £40, quite an interesting set that's hard to describe. Basically it's a battleground with various obstacles and traps and a small speeder. It features a brand new Yoda with a olive green head, a new Dooku, Dooku's pilot droid and Poggle the Lesser, whoever he is!
  • 75018, Jek 14’s Stealth Starfighter, £60, this is apparently from the Yoda Chronicles. It's a fairly large craft, black with red accents which looks a bit like an X-Wing without the top wings. Minifigs are Jek-14, Separatist bounty hunter, Special Forces Clone Trooper and R4-G0.
  • 75019, AT-TE, £80, Mace Windu, Coleman Trebor, Clone Trooper Gunner and two battle droids.
  • 75020, Jabba’s Sail Barge, £100, this looks excellent. I can't say whether it's larger or smaller than the last one because mine is still MISB. It certainly looked big enough. Minifigs are Jabba, Leia, R2-D2, Ree-Yees, Weequay and Max Rebo.
  • 75021, Republic Gunship, £110, although the guy on the stand said it was much improved on the last version, superficially, it looks pretty much identical and seems to employ many of the same building techniques to form the shape of the ship. Contains Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padme, Clone Pilot, Clone Trooper Officer and two Super Battle Droids.
  • 75022, Mandalorian Speeder, £25, two Mandalorian super commandos and a new Darth Maul.
  • 75023, Advent Calendar, £25. No minifigs for this were on display but as I said earlier, it contains Santa Jango Fett.

Games

Three new games to be released in August:

  • Chima. This looked attractive and involves collecting CHI.
  • Batman. Chase baddies across Gotham City, looked to be just 'more of the same' and similar to other games.
  • Story Mixer. The most interesting of the three. I wasn't quite sure how it was supposed to work, but it seems to involve collecting small vignettes, on 4 x 4 plates which represent trees, cakes, houses, trains, planes, animals and all sorts of other things, which you have to use to make up a coherent story. It was said to be equally appealing to adults and kids, and as it didn't involve any actual building (unlike Creationary) it will be easier to play with non-building grannies and the like.

Friends

Discounting the collectable bags for a moment, there will be six new sets in August:

  • 41009, Andrea’s Bedroom, £10, dressing table, sofa (might be a sofa bed) small table with laptop.
  • 41010, Olivia’s Beach Buggy, £10, beach buggy, ice cream stand, palm tree.
  • 41013, Emma’s Sports Car, £13, light and dark pink sports cabriolet, picnic table, signpost.
  • 41006, Downtown Bakery, £25, two minifigs, similar in size and design to the cafe, but different colours: tan, dark pink, orange.
  • 41005, Heartlake High, £50, very attractive looking school building, probably 48-odd studs wide, but only eight deep. Made mostly from light yellow bricks with a dark blue roof. Three figures including an African-American boy.
  • 41015, Dolphin Cruiser, £60, large pleasure boat which, like many Friends sets, is a bit of a mish-mash of colours making it look a bit messy. It''s primarily white, with turquoise and pink. The top half is removable to access the bedroom and galley below deck. Three minifigs including a Caucasian boy.

The three series 3 collectable bags were on display, which feature a puppy and kennel, a fawn and a tree, and a green parrot in a open cage.

Super Heroes

I know a lot of you want more information about these but to be honest, they were very underwhelming. There were no minifigs on display, as I said, and the Marvel sets in particular were very un-memorable, I can't even tell you what they were. Pete has recalled some of the minifigs over at FBTB so if you have an interest in SH, please take a look over there.

I think that just about wraps up my coverage of the event. Hopefully more details, and photos will emerge from the German toy fair in a couple of weeks.

Excellent Huw, thanks for your great reviews.
I sometimes wish Lego would have a whole year off making new things so it would give me a chance to catch up.
I can't wait for the LOTR and SW stuff, Super Heroes are a must for me for the figures and can never resist a new Castle theme.
Probably will have to get the Lone Ranger sets as I love western and love Licensed figures in general.
Legends of Chima, as interesting as it looks will be left out for me. Can't afford to start collecting a new theme especially as I'm now regretting spending so much on Ninjago. Friends and City I'm not interested in.
Good luck saving for the year everybody.

By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for a great review Huw, it has sort of helped me get first impressions on which sets to buy and pass on later in the year. I can't wait for the photos to emerge. As for Lego, I wish they weren't so paranoid as they are that worried of people seeing Lego that is being released in a few months.

By in United States,

I am very glad to hear that TLG came to there senses and made boy figures for the Friends as I was getting kind of tired of only being able to play as Peter (The only male figure up to now) with my daughter. I think some of these sets could have boy appeal, but with no boy figures, it would be a tough sale to boys and parents of boys. I was working on designs for boy figures for Cuusoo, but now I guess I'll have more time on my hands to most likely get that second job to be able to afford these and other 2013 sets! Well done, TLG.

(Now I can start e-mailing them about including an African-American man as a father for Andrea... Are you sure Huw that these figures are boys and not men? Could they be a teacher at the school and the captain of the boat? I hope boys...)

Thank you for these four reports and the set descriptions. I am pretty excited about loads of sets.

^ I believe photos are not allowed to be taken at this toy fair.

By in Germany,

Thanks for your reviews, Huw! They were all an interesting read and gave me a good impression what to pass this year (there is quite some, to be honest). Right now only the Sail Barge sounds interesting to me, as I sold my old one some time ago. The SuperHeroes sets, I believe, will aim for the minifigure collectors and otherwise not offer memorable buildings or vehicles.

By in United Kingdom,

Urgh, shouldn't have Max Rebo been in Jabba's Palace?

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Even though I think Attack of the Clones is a terrible movie, I'm pleased that they are finally making sets for it again. And Jango Fett! Definitely getting most of these.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw... Are you going to be posting some info on the Technic and Creator sets?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank you very much for the detailed description of the Friends sets! I really appreciate your effort to include and describe all the things at the toy fair for everyone here with different interests.

By in Canada,

^^ Aready done, in a previous installment. Make sure you read them all!

By in United Kingdom,

Poggle the Lesser is the Geonosian leader with the walking stick in AOTC.

I think I'll grab the Adi Gallia set and the Republic Gunship. I really need to cut down on my spending.

Gravatar

Poggle Lesser: Off Bricklink
Colemen Trebor: Briclink
Corporate Aliance Tank Droid: Entire Set

@Huw and GREAT Reviews Huw once again!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've been wanting a Max Rebo fig for ages. Looks like I'll be buying at least one of these. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Coleman Trebor? He was barely in Episode 2. This could mean he will appear in the Clone Wars TV Show.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I apologise in advance if my FBTB report does not answer all the Super Heroes questions you may have. At least it wasn't just me that thought the display was un-memorable ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

You're right... not sure how I missed it. Thanks!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Poggle the lesser is a Geonosian of high rank.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Coleman Trebor = very hot mints.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ooo! Exciting news on the Jabba's sailbarge minifigs. Loving the idea of Ree-Yees and Weequay. Nesquick, Max Reebo was playing on the sailbarge too, the robot chicken take on him has his greatest hits coming out after his tragic death when it blew up.
One thought though, only 6 figures? I guess 4 less (okay 3, the carbonite doesn't exactly count, and 2 if you don't count the brick built monk) for £20 less might be about right. I'd have liked another Salacious B. Crumb though, and a C-3PO for the eye-pecking scene.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can't wait till the Spielwarenmesse International toy fair! (For the pics)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks Huw,
I think many times people think this information is just handed out and they do not realize what work goes into getting the information into our hands

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Looking forward to: Corprate Alliance Tank, Homing Spider Droid, Republic Gunship from Star Wars, although I wish the clone troppers were phase 2. From Lord of The Rings: Pirate Ship Ambush.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw,
Thank you so much for this detailed report—with no pictures allowed in the booth I imagine you did a lot of furious scribbling to get it all—we appreciate your efforts! First impressions—Must have: Chima 70008 Gorzan's Jungle Striker; City Cargo Airport sets; Galaxy Squad 70708 Hive Crawler; Lone Ranger sets—happy to have Western sets again; Lord of the Rings sets; Star Wars 75020 Jabba’s Sail Barge. Disappointed: After rollout of awesome Avengers sets, the sloooww rollout of Marvel Superheroes so far and odd character selection is somewhat frustrating: Nova, Iron Fist, Dr Doom? Love the Collectible Minifigures but 'hunt the gold minifigure'… really?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks HUW for the reviews! Too bad no pictures, but it only makes it that much more exciting for when the actual images and/or sets do come out. : ) I am most excited about the castle theme now that I know what the next modular will be. Other than that I honestly cannot find myself buying anything, the City Airport Cargo sub-theme I will have to take a gander at and "possibly" buy, maybe a rainy day this summer when I have nothing bettet to do. I guess its just an off year for me! : ) Good for savings and good for being able to build with what I have that is still new, bad because I won't experience that magic quite as often, you know, the magic when you bring that new box home and the world is your lego oyster sort of a deal? : )

By in United States,

I only really go for the starfighters and battle packs, it tends to be better for my wallet. I can't find any images of what Jek 14’s Stealth Starfighter looks like and I'm wondering if it only appears in the cartoon. if anyone has an image of the ship that they can prove it's canon I would love to see it.

I also find it amusing that Coleman Trebor would appear in a scene that took place after he died.

I'll also be getting Iron Man Extremis, Iron Man vs Mandarin, and any other of the superhero sets under $20. I''m really hoping those man of steel sets turn out good and I'm curious if the superman figure will have the red tights. I know the suit in the movie does not.

EDIT:

I just spend a minute putting two and two together. These are the combined results from FBTB and Brickset. I got the set number, name, and minifugures matched up for all of the summer superhero sets.

76002 Superman Matropolis Showdown - Superman, General Zod (£11.99/?)
76009 Superman Black Zero Escape - Superman, Lois Lane, General Zod (£19.99/$19.99)
76003 Superman Battle of Smallville - Superman, Colonel Hardy, General Zod, Faora, Lara Lor-van (£34.99/$39.99)

76008 Iron Man vs. Mandarin - Iron Man, The Mandarin (£11.99/?)
76006 Iron Man Extremis - Iron Man, War Machine, Aldrich Killian (£19.99/$19.99)
76007 Marvel 4 - Tony Stark, Pepper Potts, MK42 Iron Man, The Mandarin, Unnamed figure (£34.99/$39.99)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks Huw! I've been waiting for the larger Star Wars sets because I've been saving up but I didn't want to splurge on the Super Star Destroyer just yet. Now that you confirmed the new sets I'll be eager to get my hands on them!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Can you remember what Padme and Leia's hairpieces were? And did you see what the interior of Jabba's sail barge was like?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

All these questions and comments and not a single one so far has thought to ask one of the most important questions of all?

Ok, I'll bite... Yeah I know the designs are squarely aesthetically speaking most at home with LEGO Friends, but I've just got to know, seeing as this is the first time I think they've ever made one, what does the Fawn look like? Is it just a re-use of a pre-existing animal torso like the Friends horse with a different head? Or is it all a brand new sculpt that actually looks like what a deer would look like?

I mean, I guess, is it more Bambi or is it Foal with new head syndrome?

I have no idea how I've become so enamored with the Friends line, perhaps it is the design elements chosen or just the plain fact that LEGO is offering up models and elements that haven't been seen before and the uniqueness of that has made them highly desireable, all I know is that Fawn sounds like it has a lot of potential. Hope it can live up to it. Also like the sounds of everything else mentioned Huw, thanks for the reports, it seems the school building is going to be a real treat indeed just as I had hoped.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am really looking forward to Jabba's Sail Barge, really the only thing of interest for me atm!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I wish that there were events like this in Canada...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not much of interest in Star Wars. I cherrypicked some of the figures I wanted from the Spring sets, but redoing the Clone Trooper hasn't helped, so I have passed on them and most of the Spring sets. I have most of my budget reserved for LOTR sets, but most of these Star Wars sets aren't brilliant, very Clone Wars geared. I already have the 2008 Gunship and 1 is certainly enough. Again, might cherrypick a figures and buy the odd set but that's about it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Jango fett, poggle the lesser and a new jabbas sail barge! I'm so happy with that. However I believe the desert skiff would be required to get the full scene for the sail barge. shame I'm running low on money :/

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Odeinoichus, the fawn is very cartoon-y, a brand new scuplt and made to look very cute. There's a hole in its back for the obligatory bow :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

On Man of Steel: The news that Faora and Lorvan are minifigures is the first real confirmation that they are in the movie. I don't think I have seen any other news except General Zod, so that is a bit of news. I will wait to see if it is worth purchasing, though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Star Wars sets sound rather good to me, I am surprised to hear that you liked the Sail Barge though Huw. Perhaps the preliminary image is just a bad picture. The rest of the sets all sound excellent, but I am left wondering quite why we are getting another Corporate Alliance Tank Droid, I cannot be certain, but I did not know that they were on Geonosis with Jango Fett, not complaining though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am excited for the new Super Heroes, LOTR, and Star Wars sets! I hope we Iron Man in his Extremis suit. And finally, a new Jango Fett!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pictures can be taken at the New York toy fair I think. :D That should be happening soon, sometime in February?

Gravatar
By in United States,

~Castle
For me now it all depends on the minifigs, if there good I think I'll just use 70400 Forest ambush to army build and maybe get the 70403 Dragon peak.

~Chima
All I really care about are Ravens and Eagles sets so this looks good as far as there not being any for 2013.

~City
I always wished I had bought a few of the original Coast Guard sets but if these are all junorized I'll probably just skip it...

~Galaxy Squad
Want. All. :P

~Games
Need to spend money on other things... but I do hope having a mico-fig Batgirl means we'll get her in a set sometime...

~Star Wars
75015, Corporate Alliance Tank Droid, £20 - Need Jango and for that price...
75017, Yoda vs Dooku - Well since I have the original Dooku and Yodo, I might aswell get the new one! Just to bad about the price...

~Lord of the Rings
If I can only have one it'll be 79008 Pirate Ship Ambush but I wouldn't mind all or most of the sets...

~Superheroes
76006 Iron Man Extremis - Anything for War Machine
76003 Superman Battle of Smallville- Perfect way to get all but one fig
/76009 Superman Black Zero Escape- I want Lois but I don't need two Supermans and Zods....

~The Lone Ranger
I want 'em all but, money. Hopefully it turns out like Prince of Persia...

~Minifigures
"I don't know the full details but it seems there is going to be one 'golden figure' in each box and kids are encouraged to 'hunt the gold figure'. This is obviously very bad news for everyone except LEGO's marketing department. I think this will start in series 11. "
*Facewall....* Great idea... Anywho, Series 10 looks pretty meh so that's good and hopefully 11 will be the same...

To sum it up I need a really good job and some good sales. :P And LEGO needs to take a year break and not make anything new except for a few bad CMF Series... :P

By in United Kingdom,

@legomaniac - Yes pictures are usually allowed at the New York Toy Fair. The staff demonstrate the features and there are always plenty of videos of the models as well. I seem to recall the fair is usually in early February, so not too long to wait.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@wertyjj, highly unlikely to see Coleman Trebor in TCW since he dies on Geonosis in AOTC, which is before the start of TCW.

It seems that 75016 continues the trend of including a recently killed off character from TCW in a set. I'm excited about 75022 was wondering if they're going to reuse General Grievous' legs or something new.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I actually find the release of Coleman Trebor and Adi Galia significant on the basis that it allows Star Wars fans to complete their Jedi High Council.
Consider the members of the High Council at the time
1. Yoda
2. Mace Windu
3. Obi Wan Kenobi
4. Kit Fisto
5. Eeth Koth - Succeeded by Agen Kolar
6. Ki Adi Mundi
7. Saesee Tinn
8. Shaak Ti
9. Even Piell - Succeeded by Anakin Skywalker
10. Plo Koon
11. Coleman Trebor - Succeeded by Coleman Kcaj
12. Adi Galia - Successed by Stasse Ali

Good thinking on the part of TLG IMO.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Huw, Poggle the Lesser is the Geonosian archduke with the tentacle-like beard from episode 2.

Thanks for the great reports!

Gravatar
By in United States,

wow, a new jango fett. I used to have the old one, but I lost it years ago. Probably the saddest event in my Lego experiences :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks like there is to be a Lord of the Rings helm's deep board game as well. I guess it's lack of appearance probably means it's a retailer exclusive somewhere?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The Tank droids from SW were scheduled to be in Ep II but they never made it into the movie. However, it is canon that they were present during the Battle of Geonosis, just off screen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If only we could get a clone army builder....hmmmmmm.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nothing from TMNT come on is this a one time deal or is it wait for new york uuughhhhh and also why bother getting ready for this stuff my stores just got all the 2013 sets. Does this mean I only have a little while before these sets stop being sold seriously. On the bright side I love the idea of a new jango fett

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Does jango have new pistols?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Are the battle droids in the geonosis sets just ordinary or are we finally getting some new geonosian battle droids in the reddish colour?

Gravatar
By in United States,

What does the Darth Maul look like? Is he shirtless with mechanical robot legs or does he have his cloak with his mechanical human looking legs?
