Cuusoo of the Week: - MegaMan Project - by Alatariel

Posted by ,

Projects based on games of all types abound on Cuusoo. They make up more than 5% of projects over 17 support.

Though it likely shows my age, I desire none of these moreso than one of Alatariel's fantastic MOCs themed on MegaMan 2.

This is certainly one case in which I would not mind "Mega" getting mixed in with my LEGO. (Cue the groan...)

Alatariel is one of the more active Cuusoo users and is much better known for her vignette centric Female Minifigure Set than her reinterpretations of Megaman.

Anyone familiar with Megaman will quickly recognize the trials and environments that this Mega-LEGO-Man faces. For those unfortunates among you unfamiliar with Megaman, here are some in game shots for you to judge the work against.

For those of you worried about supporting a project that looks like it must in fact be a series, fear not, Alatariel is well aware of Cuusoo's limitations and is working to pair down these works into a single set. So If you plan to support, or have already supported, make sure to write a comment about what you want out of a Megaman project.

You can see more pictures of Alatariel's work on her flickr page.

Also, if it matters to you at all, this project needs just about 250 support to get to 1000 support and get that official comment. That is well within the Brickset fanbase's capabilities, if it so chooses.

As mentioned before, if you find Alatariel's work on this appealing, don't miss her Female Minifigure Set as they showcase her craftsmanship just as well.

Its Chances

Megaman is a timeless Capcom character. Not being owned by Nintendo, he has not enjoyed the ongoing notoriety of his brethren like Mario and Link, but he has continued to prosper through various incarnations. I hear that people who've never heard of him are today enjoying the original games ported, in their entirety, to apps. Regardless, he is obviously overshadowed by modern characters/game like Portal and Minecraft and that will be a mark against the project.

On the other hand, I am not saying that Megaman has the star power of Back to the Future, but there is proof that LEGO Cuusoo likes properties that harken to the childhood of today's parents and the 8-bit artwork does crossover well with LEGO.

In the end I think a big part of this project's success will be dependent on whether or not Alatariel can capture the quintessential Megaman in an single set. That will be very difficult given that the core aspect of the game is about traveling to radically different environments to face down unique minions and foes.

This week my favorite new project is the UCS Double-Ended Ferry. It is big, bold, and beautiful, but has been overshadowed by projects like the Tie Bomber, Iron Man Hall of Armor, and Club Penguin.

My review of these projects and a showcase of all the projects that came out in the last week can be found here.

Yes! MegaMan and LEGO have something else in common: fingers blistered through hours of fun and fury. I'm not sure whether the designer here should focus on the playability of the project or capturing a compelling 2D side-scrolling scene for display. There are many retail locations I can imagine a stack of these near the register selling very well, but maybe I'm just a sucker for 8-bit! Then again, I'm clearly not the only one. Out of the three photos above, I like the Bubble Man scene the most.

Ha! I just looked at this 5 minutes ago through a link on Facebook, and I was surprised to find the same project here. :P But, still a great review! Keep up the good work glenbricker!

When it asked how many I would buy, it told me "all of them" wasn't an acceptable answer XD

For every project I support I know I will not buy (I have a rather tight budget and have to really pick and choose what I get) so I just type "999999999999" because they won't let you type '0' and since I am obviously supporting it an would wish it to be made, I just show my support!

@ lego613master - I can appreciate supporting a project in theory even if you can't buy it, but that's not what Cuusoo is for. Lego needs information to help develop products: how many people would actually buy a set if it's made? How much would they be willing to pay? If you're supporting projects with no intent or ability to buy them, it renders Cuusoo virtually useless.

I have good feelings with this set.

Just so you know, the link and mouseover text on some of the pictures is wrong.

Thanks Cheshirecat. Now that I know about that feature I will be much more careful with it in the future.
