May the 4th Star Wars promotion

Posted by ,

Nothing official has been revealed about this year's 'May the forth' Star Wars promotion, but there have been rumours circulating about the exclusive item that'll be available from brand stores and shop.LEGO.com for some time.

Now, this image has surfaced (on Eurobricks I believe) which substantiates the rumour: it will be Han Solo in Hoth garb. The accessory he's holding is a fur hat.

Thanks again to GrooveBricks for the news.

Looks like that hat is a new piece

P.S and so is that expression :0

By in Canada,

It's a nice minifig, but not the most interesting for a promotion IMO. TC-14 from last year was much better (and shinier).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If this is the promo minifig then I'm very disappointed at the incredibly average offering. Considering sets in brand stores and lego.com cost more than in other stores/websites then there needs to be a good incentive to do so. Last years chrome TC-14 was a beautiful minifig and well worth the extra cash, but this is nowhere near as good. A real pity :(

By in United States,

why would LEGO make another Hoth Han Solo. There are already seven different Hoth Han Solos. This one I might not get. I was hoping for a Jango Fett or some thing. I am not going to spend $100.00 on this one. I might buy this one on bricklink.com later.

By in Norway,

Not the most interesting Promo figure, wasnt his Hoth outfit Dark Blue?

Gravatar
By in United States,

For some reason it looked more like Han Solo was trying to get in touch with his inner Red Riding Hood, the snow hood looked like a wicker basket at first impression! At least Han's legs would make for an easy kilt...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Frederick - I think that's the point. One of them was, and they've not made him in this outfit before. Goes nicely with the general (was it Reeiken or something like that? Call myself a Star Wars fan, I'm ashamed!) in this year's snowspeeder set.

By in United Kingdom,

The costume colour is a problem. Kenner's 1997 figure had him with a brown coat, but later figures had him with a blue coat. Having seen the film numerous times, I believe his coat was blue.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe there will be some really good deals to make up for the nice, but less than exciting fig.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I imagine the brown costume is probably a reference to the original vintage Star Wars action figure error concerning the colour of Han Solo's coat.

I believe the story goes that the designers of the vintage figures released to coincide with Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, had only some initial designs and concept art to go on, and therefore the Han Solo action figure in his Hoth garb was released with a brown coat originally, which only later was changed to the correct colour of dark blue.

Anyway, a very disappointing Minifigure. There are numerous Minifigures which could be chromed or given some kind of special quality, but Lego offer us this...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree with pretty much everyone here. This seems rather lackluster for a special promotion - more like the kind of figure included with a DK Lego book. Usually the promotional figures are not of the most major characters (kind of like the difference between Boba Fett and Han Solo in terms of screen time).

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Screw whatever the minifigure looks like; because I know he'll be worth $20+ dollars by the end of the promotion! Last year there was nothing worth buying... since I didn't feel like dropping hundreds of dollars on a SuperStarDestroyer. I haven't lost a nights sleep since then, so I think I'll be fine passing on 20% discounts. If they want to grab my attention, start a midnight sale with a bunch of soon-to-be-retiring Starwars sets at 40-50%off. I'd rather Lego do these blitz deals then their weekend/weekwide sale of select exclusives (and other large hard to move sets) at 20%off +VIP.

By in Europe,

Didn't that hood come with the CMF series 5 fisherman?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I thought it was George Lucas at first...

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

When I first saw the Han Solo image, I thought the hood was made of a soft rubber material and that it would fit over his head and hairpiece.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Are the legs new? They appear shorter than normal and moveable, which would be great for the next wave of hobbit sets.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

^it's just the way the photograph of the polybag was taken, the legs are definitely regular length.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I guess I'm in the minority here, because I think a brown-coat version of Hoth Han Solo is very cool. A nice little nod to the decades long costume/toy confusion :D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well as a Star Wars fan and former Kenner figure collector I've got egg on my face here haven't I! I really should have known about the brown/blue confusion. :P
I do quite like it as a figure, but for a promotional figure it is lacking a certain something.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ agreed, i was disappointed when i heard another Han but smiled when i saw the brown color, indeed the story is that they made the origonal kenner figure based on still photos, there was some debate as to which color was correct, Hasbro, durring the Saga line released both colors as a nod to the old days, and its awsome seeing lego nod as well.

Ps. I have a picture of the Origonal Hoth Han coat, from the Star Wars collection and it indeed looks brown.

By in United Kingdom,

@ninjavader999 Not even a recolour - http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=8805-4
I believe the Ice Fisherman from series 5 had the exact same colour.

All in all then, not particularly exciting. I concur with just about everybody else here, and probably won't fork out the wad of cash needed to get it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^Ahhhh.... never got the Ice Fisherman. But I do have the Darth Maul Christmas version of the hood.
Won't be picking this version of Han up anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anyone else worried about the May the 4th deals (or lack of...)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can't say I'm absolutely excited about this one. I think the TC-14 fig last year was one of the best, but this is a problematic issue for me. Not sure if I really want this one, I get the nostalgia of an old action figure coloring issue for some, but I have to say that's a strange leap to a LEGO figure for this purpose. It's usually nice to see a movie figure that hasn't been in sets before, or has a special quality to it (chromed) that would be unlikely to see in a set. I have to say that this is still a nice looking figure, and I like the head part, it gives you the option of using on your blue Hoth Han when he's out in a snowstorm. I'm undecided so far on whether I really love this May the Fourth deal.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

@Zipsforbananas- Oh, never noticed that.
I think the alternate googled expression looks better than the one without, i can't remember Han ever having such an expression (Looks sort of scared.)

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I'm pretty sure from looking at the alternative image sources (thanks @capnrex101 and @austin3than!) that the hood is a dark brown colour with cream/tan edging, and a different colour from the ice fisherman's hood.

Edit: then again, you can barely see the back of the hood, and the poly image shows it to be very light-coloured, I'm guessing now that it is actually the same as the S5 fisherman's.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@LukeSkywalker Oh. It just looks like that in the image above.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

^i'm actually in agreement with you now, it looks the same as the fisherman's from the original image posted, so it probably is the same colour again. I was trying to edit my post but my internet connection is dodgy and acting funny and refused to allow me to reach the edit box for ages.

Hopefully it'll be at LEGO stores in June…

By in United States,

I have to say that I really like this version of Solo. His coat actually shows his rank which is a nice detail. I found many pics of Solo on the web with this same outfit. I'm adding this fig to my collection.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Are you sure it's Han Solo? It looks like he has grey hair, I might just be looking at the photo wrong

Gravatar
By in United States,

A Cloud City Lando Calrissian would have made this AFOL (who still kicks himself for missing out on 10123) quite happy.

A brown-coated Hoth Han Solo? Meh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really!!!?!?!? TLGs last exclusive at the toyfair was not good at all. I was hoping for an actually good May the 4th be with you promo to make up for the bad toyfair exclusive but now TLG wants me to spend $75 or more for this! I was hoping since this year TLG is celebrating ep II it would be a related promo like a chrome jango fett or something.
Last year they celebrated ep. I and they had TC-14 which was an excellent related fig. Oh well poor TLG is not getting much of my money this year I am very disappointed. Every promo fig by TLG has been awesome before this one and if that is bad TLG has made so many versions of this han solo it is not even funny:(

Gravatar
By in Indonesia,

Sigh...

Gravatar
By in United States,

think some of you people have story about the color of the coat mixed up. The vintage 1980 Kenner figure was blue and because of that and it's blueish appearance in the film, most people think the coat is blue. In reality the coat is more brown when you see the actual costume so when Hasbro released Hoth Han in the early 90's they used the correct brown color. Of course, despite photos of the brown coat, many people preferred the blue version because it had been etched into their memory since childhood so when Hasbro released yet another Hoth Han, they made it in both colors to appease the masses and they've been doing it with each new Hoth Han they release I believe.

It should be noted that the actual coat also has some blue fibers in it so the blue color is not entirely incorrect. Hasbro even made a version that tried to mimic this by molding the figure in brown plastic and then painting it with a light coat of blue (or it may have been the other way around).

In any case, I think it's great that TLG is releasing a more correct color version for those of us in the brown camp. Still not a good exclusive though.

By in United Kingdom,

Why does the polybag say "Stck" after the number of pieces? Will there be information about the number of pieces on German packagings in the future?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Are those moveable short legs? I really hope so!

Gravatar
By in United States,

this sounds awesome unfortunately I do not have the money to blow on 70$ lego star wars set (plus I looked at this years sets and none of them caught my eye right now). But I do like the brown coat on han he personally looks better this way. I love his head the most however I am disappointed that the hood is not a new color. But still thanks to austin3than for the pic of the other side of his head.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I resorted to looking at stills of Han Solo from ESB. In some pics, it does appear that Han's coat is brown, especially one where he was just with the film crew. Others, though, seem distinctly dark blue, especially when he has just returned to Echo Base. I'm willing to concede that it could just be the lighting, and that Han's coat may in fact be brown in the film. I'm now pretty onboard with this figure, if it's more movie-accurate. I do like that it's a much more detailed print.

For everyone noticing the above picture's hood is not recolored brown, the links that people have posted all show that the hood will, in fact be colored to match the parka. It would be lame otherwise.

On a side note, I'm pretty darn sure that Han's less bulky coat, which he wears inside Echo Base, and through a good part of the film, is definitely navy-colored. Thus, the "open-jacket" Han from 8129 (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=8129-1) is still accurate.

By in Germany,

After seeing the new pictures ( thanks, guys! ) I have to admit I really like him but what to get is the question. LSW doesn't entirely freak me out anymore, it has all been there somehow. The Hoth set to get Riekan? But I have already everything else that's in it.. Instead I am so much looking forward for new Western sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

At first I thought this was General Rieekan! Is it me or is that hairpiece a much lighter brown than usual? It really doesn't say 'Han Solo' to me like all of the other versions of him. How boring...

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

I'm not thrilled either, actually. But on the other side, there will be more money for Super Heroes and Lone Ranger. not th mention internet auctions for Harry Potter sets (anyone got a 4840 Burrow standing around...?).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I actually like this figure! At first glance I thought it was Riken too.. Which would be awesome as well!
Is there a full scan of the May calendar available yet?

^Don't worry, none of them were in Episode IV, so at least we know they all died somehow. ;)
Sorry, I'm an old trilogy purist, and sarcasm always comes out more cruel than intended online! :P

Gravatar
By in Australia,

^^ I was under the impression that the remaining "Season 6" material would be released some other way, like Bonus content on the DVD or something. The loose ends will be tied some way, so don't worry too much :)

Anyway, the figure: at first I was a bit confused, as this could be in a set (which isn't the point of these promo figures), but as I understand it LEGO will be sticking with the blue Hoth Han, and this is just a nice little reference to the debate (one which I wasn't even aware of until now). I have "Battle Of Hoth" lined up to purchase online on May 4th, so I will be getting this figure :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^^ Let it die. If anything, cancelling Clone Wars will save the License from screwing itself over even more and we'll see some more OT sets as will as Prequel sets. Let it die!

Gravatar
By in Peru,

now that clone wars have ended then lego need to make at least 5 more sets including a set with a clone wars c3po ,a clone wars darth sidious vs darth maul and savage opress, a clone wars jango fett slave 1 , battle of coruscant and a set including commander bly with 327th troopers
