April fools!

Posted by ,

As I'm sure many of you already worked out, many of our stories yesterday were April Fools' jokes:

- The next Architecture set won't be the BT Tower.
- Nobody found a 14ct Mr Gold minifig.
- The Rabbiz Chima polybag is a fake.

However the most ridiculous story of all, the Jabba's Palace one, is true. Unbelievable, isn't it...

Many thanks to rocao for putting his Photoshop skills to good use and coming up with the fake artwork for the BT Tower and Rabbiz. I thought the latter was particularly well done; in typical Chima style, the vehicle he's sitting in looks like just like a rabbit, doesn't it, and you can easily imagine LEGO coming up with something similar if rabbits do make an appearance in Chima :-)

LEGO related jokes were thin on the ground yesterday, with many of the other big sites refraining from posting any. The only ones I noticed were:

- Eurobricks to change its name to Ameribricks
- Toys N Bricks to start charging to access the forum
- BrickUltra announces GI Joe sets

What fun. I'm looking forward to next year already...

By in Bulgaria,

I actually fell for the BT Tower one... :P

By in Netherlands,

Indeed the BT Tower was the best!

They really got me on Eurobricks, it took me second to realise it was april 1st ;)

Er, ditto on the BT Tower. Well done, whoever built and photoshopped it. It wasn't the best representation of the tower, but on par with other Architecture range fails. I'm thinking of the ghastly Sydney Opera House model, and the equally slapdash BigBen. It's the completely out-of-character modernist clock face which ruins the BigBen model for me.
I can't say I cared enough about Chima to even notice the Rabbit gag. As for the 14 carat gold fig, that had me for a second or two.

Very good entertainment :-).

I thought the Rabbit one was real!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Yeah, I believed the BT tower.

I didn't believe for a second on the gold minifig, and the Rabbiz minifig, I didn't even notice that until just before. I liked the little bunny vehicle, though.

By in United States,

I had fun producing them so I'm glad some people enjoyed them. I have no disillusions about how keen and astute the community is, so I wasn't surprised that the jokes were deconstructed so easily and quickly, but I do hope next year that some people will refrain and allow the jokes to go on for a bit. We purposefully included the following easter eggs to confirm that they were indeed pranks, but maybe we shouldn't next time?

- 14kt minifig: 4/1 date on the taskbar and US format despite being from Hungary; LordPaisy_AFOL being an anagram for "April Fools Day"

- BT Tower: Eric Bedford Jr. instead of Adam Reed Tucker as designer; "Kithbet Neesan", which is "April Fool's" in Iraqi, replacing standard text on the box; and, of course ridiculously simplistic build

- Chima polybag: I guess not really an easter egg, but an absurdly cute bunny riding an absurdly cute bunny-mobile joining the Chima fray

By in United Kingdom,

I had thought about doing a "cease and desist" April Fool's joke, but I couldn't bring myself to do it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was getting ready to hunt down the Chima polybag to send to atkinsar!
Just kidding but the jokes had me going for a but until I remembered the date.

The Chrome Iron Man/War Machine one in the forums had me foaming at the mouth though. I wish we'd see that for May instead of the Iron Man that will be given out in May.

By in United States,

I didn't believe the rabbit for a second. I believed the golden minifigure one for a bit but soon realized it was fake. I completely believed the Architecture one. I know the simple build is supposed to be a sign of it being a prank, but after seeing some other Architecture sets, I wouldn't be surprised if that was a real set.

I feel reeeeeeealy stupid. :( I guess I'm just really gullible...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can u please give the instructions for rabbiz. lol

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I fell for the Chima polybag ... should've looked at that vehicle more closely ;-)

The BT Tower looked too bad, and the picture of the gold minifig was not quite good enough to fool me. Plus, I managed to work out the anagram. Good fun though.

By in United States,

Rabbiz was the first online April Fools prank I've laughed at in YEARS. Well done.

And even knowing full-well that it was a false set didn't stop me from adding him to my Sets Wanted list. He's just too darn good. ;)

By in Norway,

I like the BT Tower, a little simple looking, but not inaccurate. I am going to buy pieces to build it myself.
And the rabbit vehicle looks cute, i want the building instructions for it.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

^^ Perhaps rocao will make the LDD file available for us!

I forgot to mention in the post that the BT Tower 'Easter egg' was indeed Eric Bedford Jr. Eric Bedford was the architect of the actual BT Tower, who died a few years ago, hence the Jr.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

NOOOOOO! The Rabbit got me! Should read things properly.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I thought the BT tower was false because I couldn't find it in the architecture data base. The mock Chima model looks imaginative.

Gravatar
By in United States,

...I started thinking that the gold guy might have been a joke, but the rabbiz thing seems like something lego would do...and I was really close to running around town trying to find it...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I just hope samiam391 gets his money back for the 14k gold minifigure.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I know this was just a joke, but I think you went to far, I for one came here for real information and not for a joke. This should be a reliable site but sometimes it hard to tell whats real or not. So maybe next year, think twice before you spread wrong rumors.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@racao - the ridiculously simplistic build is what made your Architecture spoof so believable. That, and the outrageously high price. Well done. Note to TLG - give that man a job!

Gravatar
By in United States,

shouldn't you take Rabbiz out of the database?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ legoboy12345678 It was April 1st...don't believe anything you hear on April Fools day...the entire point of the day is for pranks and whatnot. Brickset is a reliable website, but no website is reliable on April Fool's day

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ I agree. There's no need to be serious every day of the year, it's nice to have some fun once in a while...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Yes, Rabbiz will be out of the database once everyone has had a chance to admire him :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I thought that rabbit looked weird

Gravatar
By in United States,

The bunny was the easiest to spot fake, it's just too bricky and blocky and bulky for a modern LEGO theme like Chima, more so for only 4$.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

LordPaisy_AFOL was a stroke of genius, somehow I thought there was something fishy about that name, but what a great anagram!

I knew there must be some clue hidden in those names on the BT Tower set, I would not have guessed at translating it into Iraqi though! I thought that was an excellent photshopping job personally as well. I did catch Eric Bedford after a quick Google though.

On any other day, if Rabbiz was announced as a new Chima character I would not bat an eyelid, great work on the graphic for that one too.

At least we can all stop living in fear of anything we read now...

@Huw - I think Rabbiz should stay under the subtitle 'Not released...yet...'

Gravatar
By in United States,

I totally fell for the BT Tower, and I was really wondering what was up with the horrible Chima poly. :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

As gullible as I can be, I took everything yesterday with a grain of salt, even if I did forget it was April Fool's a time or two. I've seen so many false rumors about LEGO on the interwebs that I rarely believe anything anymore until an official announcement.

As far as these pranks..

Since I'm not really into Chima, I didn't care for the polybag, but it did look like the wolf chest, so I didn't look into it too much. But I think bunnies would be a good faction. I actually want the fox eventually.

The architecture set would have had me fooled since I'm a very passive onlooker for those sets. As far as I would know, that could easily be a future set. I actually bought Brandenburg Gate for a mini Hogwarts build I'm working on and then I bought Big Ben because I actually like that model (unlike so many others).

And I was more happy for the finder of the Mr. Gold figure than jealous/upset. I was thinking well good for them finding one so quickly, it was only a matter of time... but I didn't pay attention to the 14 ct, which would be ridiculous (read: awesome).

As far as other websites, I didn't fall for eurobricks at all since I would never expect them to change the name, especially if the statistics did end up being true. And unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if Toysnbricks did start to charge people.

Thanks for the pranks. We'll see what next year brings.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

oh man that 14k gold minifig got me! but the other didn't as the rabits head didn't look like a mask and its ride was blockish.
the tower i didn't pay attention to because i knew it was a fake.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Same about the Rabbiz, maybe you could put him up as a Cusoo project so we can get one?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think the rabbit looked ridiculous, and it had a wolf torso, which made it obvious. If Lego made a new tribe they wouldn't use the same torso as another tribe.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I see a few posts written with concern that I purchased the figure and got scammed.

Thanks for the concern, but I was in on the hoax and didn't purchase anything :o)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was looking forward to all the April Fools yesterday. Thanks for pulling them. I'm still reeling from 'Lego to move all production to China' story that you ran (as a joke) last year. DAMN.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anyone else catch up on that the head from rabbiz was from the Christmas train set a few years ago. (Correct me if I am wrong)

Gravatar
By in United States,

The best news in this story is that the Simpsons LEGO was not revealed to be a joke. Commence arguing about how this is the best thing/ will ruin LEGO now.

Samiam391, next time I'll hold up my sarcasm sign.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank goodness that the figure was fake I thought it was odd about the free trip to the lego factory and that he is golden. Did any one else catch that cause that type of thing was in charlie and the chocolate factory. I also think one of the characters in that story was from hungary am I right? I am disappointed about the rabbiz set I hate chima but when I saw that one I knew I had to get it. However I did notice that the set did not have any play ability at all. Plus the rabbit head looked kinda odd. The tower I did not care for to be honest.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have to admit that I fell for the Chima bunny right away. I am not all that aware of the story and I could have sworn that my wife and son mentioned badgers, rhinos, gorillas and bunnies. Great job!

The next day my son did say that he thought it strange that the body was like the wolf (?) figures from Chima. So I guess he picked up on something but saw all my enthusiasm and did not say anything. Well he did fall for a "your shoes untied" April fools trick so I guess we are even.

Who am I kidding. You got me much worse.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope it's a CGI bunny head, otherwise you killed the bunny from a "holiday" set! :-p

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I fell for the BT tower one! Didn't look too closely at the picture at first just read the article, what a shame the one story I hoped was an April fools turns out to be true, I am referring of course to the jabbas palace farce.

@legoboy12345678, where's your sense of humour? I actually look forward to April 1st to see what Huw and co can come up with as jokes. I would say don't let April fools jokes put you off brickset, I believe it is the best, most reliable and most complete lego resource on the web. Huw and the other admin members work very hard to make sure of that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@HokieJoe99- And for a second I thought I was actually getting some empathy from someone. You should leave the sarcasm sign in the backyard next time.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm shocked so many people thought Rabbiz was real! Among other things*, the vehicle is bizarre**, the font for his name is way off, that's blatantly the Belville rabbit head, and the base image and minifig body are identical to Winzar's Pack Patrol. Any one of those is a dead giveaway. Before I realised it was April 1st, I thought someone at Brickset had made a genuine mistake.

*A Chima rabbit tribe featuring so far exclusively in a set in the 3025x range seems very unlikely, image quality is poor, the last number in the set ID looks weird, the name 'Rabbiz' is somewhat implausible, and his foot appears to be melting into the steering wheel???
**It's not a car, a bike, a sled, a boat, or anything of the like, it's... a weird rabbit thing. And it's so part-heavy! And look at those colours!

Gravatar

I fell for:
BT Tower
Ameribricks

Gravatar
By in United States,

I fell for BT Tower and Rabbiz. Shameful!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wait, why is Rabbiz in the database now? It's not real!

That was a good April fools joke. You really hade me there.

By in United Kingdom,

I saw a model of this at the Brickish Association AGM this last weekend! It wasn't for sale though.
