Promotional Jor-El polybag found on eBay

Posted by ,

A seller on eBay has this Jor-El polybag listed, at £35 ($50-ish). I have no idea where they came from (or indeed, who Jor-El is), but I think we can be sure that it will turn up as part of a promotion somewhere, either at shop.LEGO.com or maybe somewhere like Smyths.

I have asked the seller for the set number so I can add it to the database.

Gotta brush up on your Superman lore, Huw :P Jor-el is the father of Kal-el (aka Superman). In "Man of Steel" he's being played by Russell Crowe, making this the first minifig of Russell!

Thank you for enlightening me!

Does anybody else think this looks a little suspicious as the legs, torso and cape are all identical to those of Superman? In the recently released trailer, where we see plenty of Jor-El, he wears an outfit nothing like this one. If it is indeed real then that is a huge kop out on the part of Lego if you ask me.

Perhaps I am just being cynical though...

By in United Kingdom,

I'm with you CapnRex, unless the new film has made some major changes with Jor-El, thereis no reason he'd be in an outfit like that. Trailer suggests that the Kryptonians wear a suit of metal.

By in Guatemala,

Suspicious indeed CapnRex101, I think Jor-El has never worn Superman's suit. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

By in United Kingdom,

I dunno, Jor - El, Kal El... Reminds me of Kim Jong Il, Jim Jong Un.
Are they by any chance related?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

His suit looks like a lighter blue than Superman's. And I'm sure I remember him wearing a cape at the beginning of the latest trailer.

By in United Kingdom,

I rather hope this is real, but I notice that there's no image in the top right of the bag - all previous Superhero polys (AFAIK) have had an image of a minifig from the line at that spot (Batman, Iron Man, etc). This raises my suspicions that this may be a custom of some sort. However, as I said, I hope it's real.

By in United States,

I'm wanting to say that this polybag design is a fake. The Super Hero polybags that have come before usually have LEGO-ized picture of the character in the top right corner:

Also, there is a distinct white glow around the minifig in the picture, which could indicate the covering up of a poor Photoshop job.

Plus the fact that the torso print is identical to the Superman body, I call shenanigans. But who knows, maybe I'll be proven wrong.

By in United States,

It does seem a little suspicious, but the superman logo is generally explained as being the El family crest, so it isn't completely out of the question that his dad would wear it too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now if someone would buy this for$ 50 we'd find out if it's real. :P

By in United States,

Maybe it could be like last year with the Hulk minifigure

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Namanbricks - I reckon you might be on to something there. This is pure speculation, but perhaps Lego saw the overwhelmingly negative reaction when it was revealed that the May the 4th/5th promotion this year for the Super Heroes was going to be a fairly Iron Man dull polybag. Therefore they rushed this Jor-El polybag out quickly, hence the lack of a special torso print etc.

Nevertheless, I am still not sold on this and have my suspicions. If it is indeed real, what I have mentioned above seems to be the only excuse I can think of for the lack of a specialised torso for the Minifigure, and this is one of the weakest promotional items of recent years in my opinion.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yea it could be speaking that i actaully have the promotional Hulk figure. Anyways yea it could be a promotion but for what and where can we get 1 at?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If you have ever watched The Superman films, Jor-El is the name of Superman's father and Superman's real name is Kal-El

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, it looks fairly legit. I guess it will be a S@H promo for June, like the Iron Man one for May.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I see Huw has received a set code now. Typing in the first four digits shows similar coding for the Batman 2 game - so perhaps this is intended as an extra to be included in a forthcoming game, or perhaps with the DVD of the new film?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe its like last years hulk witch came out in the middle of may after the star wars promo.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@TEDOG1232: You can download the full calendar on the Lego Stores website.

@Huw: By the way, this is a DC set, not a Marvel set. You should know at least that much. ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Okay thx I'll try that.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

....and I see the eBay seller has sold out. That was quick. Did anybody here bite?

Gravatar
By in United States,

No I saw that he had quality 2! He in the UK!

Gravatar
By in United States,

looks cool...........

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's not fake, well this one might be, but Jor-El poly is going to be a S@H promo at some point this year

Gravatar
By in United States,

What does the S@H stand for? Super and Heroes? Super Alliance Heroes? And he'll come he got 2? And where and how did he get them?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

S@H = Shop at Home. That is, ordering online from the Lego.com website.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Well, guessing from the most recent trailer, Superman says that the "s" stands for hope on Krypton. Also, they have shots of Jor-El (Russel Crowe) looking like he's trying to save the planet, so I bet he's wearing this suit, as others have mentioned.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Probably legit, seeing as the same seller has already sold several #5001621 previously.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well, it would seem it is indeed legitimate, in which case this is a particularly weak offering from Lego if you ask me, nevertheless, a welcome addition to the Superman: Man of Steel line-up and it is great to get our first Russell Crowe in Minifigure form!

By in United States,

Superman's suit (and this suit on the Jor-El fig) is what Kryptonians wear underneath their armor according to the new movie. Since superman never received a set of armor, he just wears the suit. This was explained in a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly. I'm not sure why Jor-El doesn't have armor though.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'd guess he doesn't have armour because the movie associates it with the 'bad guys' so Superman and his Father being the 'good guys' only wear blue suits.

Kind of like in the old westerns the sheriff usually wore a white hat and the bank robbers and such black ones.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey Huw, Jor El is DC Universe not Marvel, as its currently listed. :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe in the movie Jor el acts like Superman, steals his suit.

However the suit is horrible. The first suit from last year set is a lot better.

Gravatar
By in Hong Kong,

If you look carefully at the torso, the shoulder position of Jor-El is of different color from that of Superman.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So saying if this is released in May ,the new DC Super Heroes Unite comes out around May 21 so they might release this the same time as the DVD comes out on the LEGO website to have something with the Super Hero movie and the launch of the Man of the Steel sets. That's what I am speculating for now but I guess we will find out in May

Gravatar
By in United States,

It probably comes out in June, if it is indeed real, to coincide with the movie's release. Personally, I think it's official.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hmm I like this figure and I'm skeptical after doing research on the figure. Only if someone could buy one or at least verify the retailer that is selling this. If it is real, it will probably be similar to the Hulk Promo figure promotion where one will have to spend at least 50$ at the Lego store, it could give me a chance to buy the Black Zero Escape set and the Daily Bugle set, which I still haven't bought, unless the people at the Lego store have received an early shipment of the promos. PLEASE PLEASE LET THIS BE REAL!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

all I can think of by looking at this figure is "AND I'M JAVERT! DO NOT FORGET MY NAME!" Oh come on, it's Russell Crowe after all! I NEED THIS!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Well, if you're that excited, it appears the same seller has a couple more copies up for sale on eBay.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The seller has 100% feedback on eBay. I'd say this is genuine, and everyone is being a touch cynical.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As someone mentioned above, the S is the family crest. And there is precedent. Marlon Brando wore the S in a shield crest when he played Jor-El in Superman The Movie (1978) - if i'm not mistaken, his suit was white though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow, this is pretty weak. It looks like they've just slapped an Admiral Norrington head onto Superman's body (albeit the cape looks dark red rather than red). A Jor-El poly would have actually been quite cool if it looked ANYTHING LIKE THE SUIT IN THE TRAILER. Yes I did mean to use caps lock.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Rusty in minifig form!
Now they just need him in a Rabbitohs outfit and maybe something to fit into a 30 Odd Foot of Grunt scene (Google it for the non-Australians).

Gravatar
By in Indonesia,

All I thought when I heard this was Maximus and Javert...If this is fake, which I'm not saying it is, what head is that? It's too blurred to make out!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

if you look carefully, you can see there's wrinkles around the eyes... this is definitely a new head

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I've just realised, if you take all of Jor El's armour off, you have this outfit... dunno why people are complaining because he is in fact wearing this outfit underneath the armour... perhaps LEGO couldn't find a way to make the armour so they put him in that outfit instead? just a thought

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks fake. The white glow around the head is uneven and jagged unlike the rest of the body. The head also looks slightly off center to the body and a little too big.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It is a new torso because at the top of super man's torso has red on both sides but Jor-El has the regular blue so I think that the torso is brand new

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks for posting this. If it is real, then I will have to postpone my Superman shopping until this is available. I thought about picking them up as soon as I can, but I will have to wait to see if this is real and when it becomes available. I'm hoping it is real!

The blue does look lighter for sure and the cape does look darker. Who knows..

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it worth making a fake poly bag and minifigure just for 2 fifty dollar sales, ruining your ebay account, and potential aggravation from the people you rip off? People are so quick to call photoshop and fake on things nowadays, but how easy do you think it is to create fake packaging?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I bought one this morning so will let you know when it arrives and if it's real or made from plasticine lol.
