Ninjago in 2014?

Posted by ,

A Hungarian blog has posted more information that lends credence to the rumor that the Ninjago theme will be returning in 2014. http://www.kockamania.hu/blog/post/LEGO-Ninjago-2014?id=84

The image and set information indicates that the antagonists will be in the form of cyborgs, perhaps veering away from animals due to Chima.

A relaunch of Ninjago will surely please many who thought the theme ended abruptly and prematurely. If it comes to pass, it will be interesting to see the effect on whether or not Chima gains traction. Up to this point, the Chima launch has seemed disjointed and far short of the expectations for the theme's success.

Exciting! I really didn't get into Chima as much as I thought I would, so seeing Ninjago come back is making me happy. Especially mention of a Nindroid Mech Dragon.
Bring it on!

This is pretty old news to be honest, though I'm sure numerous Ninjago fans will be delighted to see that Ninjago will live another year or so. :)

I would love some cyborg type villains, the parts could be absolutely fantastic given the tendency of Lego to produce brand new moulds for Ninjago.

The fact that Ninjago is continuing isn't news. This image was revealed months ago (in fact, late last year) on the LEGO Message Boards. The accompanying post confirmed that Ninjago would be continuing throughout 2013 and into 2014: https://community.lego.com/t5/NINJAGO/Important-Ninjago-Announcement/m-p/4461464

Since then, it has been confirmed that at least eight more episodes of the TV series are in development for release late this year: http://jayvincentmusic.com/

Meanwhile, Mark Stafford said in his Bricklist on this very site that "I'm really glad there will be more Ninjago - it deserves a bigger bang then this to go out on!" His role as a set designer (and the show's epic conclusion) seems to make it pretty clear he's talking about the sets, not the show. http://www.brickset.com/brickLists/?5289

There are at least two more graphic novels coming out throughout this year, though I believe Graphic Novel #8, due for release in October, is an "interquel" rather than dealing specifically with 2014 story: http://www.papercutz.com/shop-all/lego-ninjago-vol-8/

And finally, here's a news article about TLG's decision to continue the theme: http://www.marketingweek.co.uk/news/legos-ninjago-brand-continues-due-to-super-fan-engagement/4006642.article

Overall, what IS new is the set information. It's a real surprise if this is legit set information coming out before we've even hit mid-summer, but it doesn't sound as dubious as some of the previous rumored set names and numbers I've seen. Then again, the names are also the sort of names that a person COULD come up with on their own if they had some background knowledge of the Ninjago story and the likely significance of the teaser image, so I'm going to remain a teensy bit wary.

Brickset even reported on this news months and months and months ago. Plus in three years NinjaGo has only released one theme with animals, the snakes. The others were skellies and rock people.

However the number of sets and names are new and sound really cool...

LEGO 70720 - Air Breaks (Hover Hunter)
LEGO 70721 - Kai fighter (Fighter Kai)
LEGO 70722 - OverBorg attack (OverBorg Attack)
LEGO 70723 - Thunder offensive (Thunder Raider)
LEGO 70724 - NinjaCopter (NinjaCopter)
LEGO 70725 - Nindroid mechanical dragon (Nindroid MechDragon)
LEGO 70726 - Destroyers (Destructoid)

Regarding the question of "will this conflict with Chima", I don't think it should pose a real problem. Legends of Chima was not designed with the intent of replacing Ninjago, just with the intent of creating a similar success story. So really whether Chima succeeds or fails will be on its own merit alone. It may succeed and it may not, but I don't think Ninjago's return will have a big impact.

Currently, the show isn't doing much for Chima, I don't think, but there's still time for it to improve. Only three episodes have aired, so let's hope that it's just off to a slow start and the dialogue won't remain so stilted throughout the whole series. I'm not optimistic about the show, to be honest, but it's not like it's the worst show on Cartoon Network (speaking as a Ninjago fan who had to endure a few minutes of "Johnny Test" when I changed the channel to Cartoon Network before a new episode).

The sets, however, have been performing strongly from what I've seen, if not as strongly as TLG had been projecting. Perhaps one of the biggest points against it for Ninjago fans was the myth that it was intended to take Ninjago's place, so the fact that Ninjago is coming back might make some fans more receptive to Chima than they were before. Others, of course, might have to cut Chima sets out of their budget, so there's a bit of give-and-take.

LEGO even admitted the point of Chima was to take over for the phasing out of NinjaGo.

Yes Yes Yes! Do to the end of ninjago I have resorted to watching TMNT!!! Now I can buy ninjago and TMNT in 2014 due to a rumor about both tmnt and ninjago!!! For those tmnt fans i heard lego is doing a metal head from season 1!!!!

LEGO really tried hard to keep up chima with ninjago:

Building Sets
Action Figures
Card Games / Speeders
TV Show
its own Online Game (i think, correct me if i am wrong)
Foam Shields and Swords

Ninjago:

Buiding Sets
Card Game / Spinners
TV shows
Foam Shields and Swords
Online game (somewhat)(LEGO UNIVERSE)

I never really got into the theme. I like the idea of the speeders but, i think Lego should stick to at least some human figures. Doing this, would increase the demand because i think that kids would be able to relate more to the characters. Anyway, cant wait for the 2014 Ninjago. hope l Lego brings back the spinners. that was a big miss that lego did, not having them for this year :/.

I'm intrigued by the Nindroids. The Nindroid dragon immediately leaps out at me. I absolutely hope they make these, I thought the whole stone warrior thing wasn't brilliant and Ninjago needs a better 'send off'. All hail Ninjago! :-P
Also nice to see that Chima hasn't necessarily replaced Ninjago. It's not fair to compare themes and say one is better than the other.

By in New Zealand,

Hmm....interesting discussion here. Everyone knows that ever since LEGO first started releasing the LEGO Legends of Chima sets at the beginning of this year, they have been trying to get loads of publicity for it - just look at the list of Chima-related stuff that "Mr. Green" posted above....video games, action figures, card games, merchandise and the list goes on and on. LEGO knows that if they could ever replace Ninjago, they'd need a really popular theme with lots of publicity (which Chima is fast becoming).

LEGO thought that they got it right when they started releasing LEGO Legends of Chima sets long ago and decided to announce that the Ninjago theme would be ending very soon. After that, all of the remaining Ninjago fans complained to LEGO and there was a public backlash against Ninjago ending. LEGO thought that they might be able to make a little more money with Ninjago (after they saw that there was actually more Ninjago fans left than they first thought), so they told the LEGO Message Boards moderators to publish a post announcing that Ninjago would continue from where it left off, with new sets coming out at the start of 2014 (which we knew a few months ago).

That's basically what happened over the past year with LEGO Legends of Chima and LEGO Ninjago themes. :-)

On the sets: the names look interesting (some sort of cyborg, techno wave of sets :S). It will be interesting to see where this goes. :-)

By in United States,

@Aanchir: Umm, yeah, pretty much spot-on. I didn't even know there was any doubt about NinjaGo continuing... For one, it was officially announced by LEGO representatives and for two, it makes very little sense for LEGO to discontinue such an unbelieveably popular theme. :P

By in United States,

The sets look like they're going to be excellent as always.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!

yeah. I wonder if ninjago will be apart of chima. *hmmm

What about a crossover or an actually historical relationships? (eg: all tribes are sealed and only Snakes and "Gorillas" survived)

^*Shrug*

Personally, I love inter-theme stories. I would probably buy Ninjago sets for the sole reason that they are intermixed with another theme. Well, actually probably not, but it would certainly have an effect.

By in Germany,

Legend of Chima doesn't contain any of the elements that made Ninjago successful. Check 'The Hero with a Thousand Faces' by Campbell, which describes perfectly how all our world's ancient stories and myths share the very same characters, plots and rites of passage. (This is - by the way - what George Lucas used as a checklist to create the Wars.) Many of these elements appear in Ninjago. Or with other words - it has been told over and over, but that's not what makes it boring - it's what people like to hear about. The characters are easy to identify with and have a purpose. I couldn't really say what the motivation of the Chima guys is, or even identify with one race at all. If there is a Darwin-esque point that TLC wants to strike, it is probably too complicated and too well hidden. Many times it's better to keep it simple.

I am glad Ninjago comes back, they should have worked on that theme more, evolving the universe instead of betting all on another horse. Marketing surely helps a good product. But might I say - perhaps Chima is not a good one - and I don't judge this by sets, designs or so, but simply by the story the sets want to tell. The story is more important than anything else and for some reason companies tend to forget that. Business management and marketing people all over the executive floor and no one can say what they're really selling? Didn't TLC once claimed themselves that they sell stories, not sets? Imagination?

Gravatar
By in United States,

So this isn't that current news about the theme continuing but it is very big news about the list of sets...
Long live NinjaGo =)
EDIT: I don't believe these sets to be true simple because there are seven of them when lego usually puts out six but maybe there will be an exclusive or something...

I wonder if in 2014, there will also be a summer wave, or if it will be like this year. I also wonder if there will be the card game with the spinners.

Also, if you look into the eye of the poster, you see someone, is that a robot, or another ninja, either way, it looks cool

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is in fact very old news...

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ ^^ It's old news, the sets are the new news. FYI.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh please, no more Ninjago. There's already been 2 or 3 seasons :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can't we just kill it and get a better theme? I think we have had enough, considering it's sales have dropped.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^Where are you getting your info? Bricklie? No, Ninjago was the 2nd or 3rd highest selling theme last year. Sales have dropped because it was partially discontinued, duh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Never understood the appeal of Ninjago. I thought it was cool because of the ninjas and whatnot but nothing special

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ninjago!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nindroid Dragon? Would love a Zoids/Lego crossover!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Cool, I'm not really into Ninjago, but nice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wouldn't be so sure that the new antagonists will be cyborgs. Remember Zane? The white ninja? He's a cyborg (nindroid), remember? That picture could just be him saying that there will be a new season of the ninjago TV series, which of course, means more new sets :) Needless to say, I'm excited to see what LEGO comes up with!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The set names seem promising, but I probably won't get any, because I have currently stopped collecting Ninjago.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Cyborg/Mech prints are always good for the Steampunk/Technojunkie niche. I can see those having appeal to people otherwise yawning about Ninjago

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow! Umm... I think that the photo is old news considering that it was on the LEGO Message Boards for the last couple months, but where are the set names that people are talking about? I don't see any. Also, further news on Ninjago can be seen at Jay Vincent's (The composer of the TV show's music) website, where he says:
"It has now been confirmed that there will be at least 8 new episodes of Ninjago that will premiere late 2013 and 2014. The writers Hageman are hard at work, and scoring will begin the late summer of this year. Look out for more Nindroids, new action, and many, many flutes!"

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeahhh more NinjaGo, also this is a little of topic but if you go to the ninjago mini site you can watch the full episodes of last season because I know in some places you cant watch it because of the law about shows based on toy lines

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not really a fan of Ninjago but i'm keeping an open mind until i see pics. But i have to admit mechanical dragon sounds cool.

By in United States,

I used to be a big fan of ningago. but I like halo better as you see from my earlier comments.

I used to like starwars, agents, bionicle and hero factory
but there all replaced with halo

By in United States,

@Aanchir I agree with you the fact that is not news what so ever as this site itself revealed it in...
http://brickset.com/news/article/?ID=5148 ...however it is new news that cyborgs are the new villains. Though what I really want to know is if there will be new minifigs in the sets like Misako, Ed and Edna, Dareth, good Garmadon, a new version of Nya and maybe new suits for the ninja. They all appear in the storyline a lot but it does not seem like we will be getting them all.

One thing I don't get is the rivalry between Ninjago and Chima. Personally I like Chima better but if you like them both so much that you can't decide which one you like more than I would think that you would not mind spending you're money on both.

Other than that I think this is great news :-D.

Big news!!!! I went to comic con over the weekend and papercutz was there (people who write ninjago books) they said that something will be reviled in the ninjago book that is coming in October... and that they couldn't tell us how but look for ninjago in 2014 and that it was only cancelled because that lego had planned all 3 years before they realesed thefirst wave and that they didn't expect it to sell so well so they changed there minds.
