PRESS RELEASE:

LEGO Group Builds Creative Merchandising Program for “THE LEGO® MOVIE”

-First of 17 Building Sets, Playable Video Game Demo to be Displayed at Comic-Con-

SAN DIEGO, July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL — The LEGO Group today announced that it will produce a collection of movie-inspired building sets celebrating the brand’s premiere as a theatrical film. The company has recruited an impressive roster of global partners to a broad, multi-category licensing program to support the much anticipated animated adventure film from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and produced by Dan Lin and Roy Lee, “THE LEGO® MOVIE” is rapidly building buzz following its first released trailer and assembles on the big screen starting in February 2014.

“The LEGO brand has been a vehicle for creative storytelling around the world for decades, so it’s no surprise that there is such growing enthusiasm for the first LEGO theatrical film,” said Jill Wilfert, vice president licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. “We are thrilled to collaborate with our valued partners to build a varied and compelling portfolio of products through which fans of all ages can celebrate this LEGO brand milestone.”

Building Sets
Inspired by pivotal scenes in the film and starring key LEGO minifigure characters, a collection of 17 LEGO building sets will deliver all of the “THE LEGO MOVIE” action to the playroom. Fans will delight in highly detailed and functional vehicles and structures that reflect the creative versatility of the movie’s many LEGO themed backdrops, such as City, Wild West, and Space. Comic-Con International attendees in San Diego, California will see the first “THE LEGO MOVIE” building set unveiled at the LEGO booth (#2829) on Saturday, July 20.

Additionally, the company’s line of collectible LEGO Minifigures will receive its first Hollywood makeover with a series inspired by “THE LEGO MOVIE” cast of 16 new and “new-again” LEGO characters.

Videogame
In related news, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that the chart-topping and award-winning LEGO videogames franchise from TT Games will include an epic gaming experience based on the film across all major console and handheld gaming systems. With more than 90 playable characters inspired by the film and 15 exciting levels, kids will be able to build an adventure like never before.

Movie-Inspired Merchandise
A roster of global licensees covering several categories will immerse filmgoers in the world of “THE LEGO MOVIE.” Perennial publishing partners Scholastic, Penguin, Ameet and DK Publishing will offer a range of readers, sticker books, activity books and movie guides. Apparel partners include T-shirts from Mad Engine, Isaac Morris, Kabooki, TV Mania and Casco Blu, hoodies from TV Mania, pajamas from SGI Apparel, TV Mania and Kabooki and undergarments from Handcraft Mfg. and Kabooki. Carry Gear and Grown Up will offer bags, including backpacks and cinch bags. Clic Time is producing clocks and buildable watches. MZB Imagination and Funtastic are creating an array of stationery items including notebooks, journals, folders, pens, pencils and pencil cases, erasers, rulers and luggage/bag tags. Functional key lights featuring movie characters are being produced by IQ HK. Storage partner ROOM Copenhagen is producing a lunchbox, lunch set, drinking bottle and storage and sorting boxes.

The Feature Film
“THE LEGO MOVIE” opens in some global markets the first week of February, 2014. The 3D computer animated adventure tells the story of Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

“THE LEGO MOVIE” stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Charlie Day, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman, as the voices of the animated characters. The film is directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (“21 Jump Street,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”) from their original screenplay, story by Dan Hageman, Kevin Hageman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, based on LEGO construction toys. It will incorporate some of the LEGO world’s most popular figures while introducing several new characters, inviting fans who have enjoyed the brand’s innovative toys and hugely popular video games for generations to experience their visually unique LEGO world as never seen before. The film is produced by Dan Lin (“Sherlock Holmes,” “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”) and Roy Lee (“The Departed,” “How to Train Your Dragon”). “THE LEGO MOVIE” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

By in United States,

Wow, if that set (if it actually is one of the sets) is any indication of what we can expect of future movie tie-in sets, this is going to be awesome.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Don't forget to post about the DeLorean pics and the Batman set..

By in United States,

The minifigure series sounds interesting. The set reminds me of Agents. It looks pretty good, but until more pictures are available, it's hard to judge the line. Also, it seems like they are producing a LOT of non-Lego stuff, like the notebooks, watches, etc. I guess they really want to see this take off, because if not much merchandise sells, that's a lot of advertising and money to get the companies to make their products wasted. I would like to see this movie do well.

By in United States,

Oh, no....

There goes all my money. :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm excited for the new and "new again" bit. Reissues or redesigns from LEGO's history... oh boy!

Will they make Lego movie pajamas in adult-size I wonder?

Gravatar
By in United States,

^LOL!!! :P

@48bones48- If they do, it'll probably be Emmet. So I wouldn't want him.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That preview set looks amazing, and there's going to be 16 more after it...as long as the price stays down, these are going to be on the top of my buy list.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can't wait till they come out

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It all sounds and looks great! I would like Green Lantern, the mermaid and the panda from the trailer in the CMF line or a set, please, TLG :-)
*goes off to watch the trailer again*

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

I will be buying sets that mix well with Star Wars:
-Wild West;
-City;
-Space.
Seeing the trailer it gave me an idea: make a Lego world where every theme exist to support Star Wars.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

That zombie-robot-police dude looks awesome. In these sets, the designers can loose their imaginations I'm sure!

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

80s Space Guy confirmed for reissue (broken helmet included).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lordmoral, I don't really agree with that idea, even though I have done it myself on occasion, and for Star Wars, Just stop.
On Topic: I love the set, I want five!

Gravatar
By in United States,

why hasn't this site said anything about the announced new batman set with the flash and riddler??

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can't wait for the hood piece from the girl minifig

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

17 sets??? That seems a lot. I hope they're all great, otherwise it seems like overkill, time will tell.

Although it feels a bit like a kneejerk reaction to the fact that they dropped the ball on Universe by NOT having mutually supporting product streams, i.e. sets to support/promote game while the game promotes the sets. Kids (and adults) were crying out for stuff they saw in Universe.

But I'm learning to not analyse TLG decisions. They hardly ever make much sense to me. Lol.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Gravatar
By in United States,

On the one hand this is super exciting and on the other it's terribly disappointing because I know I won't be able to get them all. ;-) I love the goggles on that bad guy standing on the side of the truck and Emmett's face is hilarious! I hope the movie does really well...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I could see the 17 sets being a lot of smaller sets that will lure new Lego fans into collecting after they see the movie. All star cast attracts people to movie, movie attracts people to lower priced Lego sets, people get addicted (like us) and start purchasing more and more sets, branching off into the other themes. It's genius.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really hope Mr Gold is one of the CMFs!!! That would be so funny...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I wonder if the Minifigure series will be separate like the GB figures or possibly regular issue Series 12??

Gravatar
By in Germany,

"Additionally, the company’s line of collectible LEGO Minifigures will receive its first Hollywood makeover with a series inspired by “THE LEGO MOVIE” cast of 16 new and “new-again” LEGO characters."

I hope this will include Abe Lincoln, Panda Guy and Michelangelo from the trailer. I also hope the "new again" part means we will get an 80's space guy with the old helmet.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks SAWEET!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I am not sure about the rest of you but I hope the other 15 sets look better than this one and the Batman one on the internet.
Sure they look cool but I do not want to put to much money into a theme that does not look over the top and out of this world like star wars or LOTR/Hobbit.
The video game and movie look like playing and seeing though!

Gravatar
By in United States,

^, which Batman set?

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ I think ^^ is referring to the Riddler Chase set, but that's part of the Super Heroes line, not this theme.

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

Honestly, I feel it abit complex. It's a nice and commercial idea, if an original media story provide good theme for actual bricks. However, I've always wanted other previous media like Clutch Powers and City Undercover to have their own sets. If TLC only begins to consider it for newer media, I'm dissapointed.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The set looks pretty decent, nothing ground breaking but well done. The girl's hair is interesting, but I don't like the hood; it seems unnecessary to me, we've had printed hoodies before and they worked just fine for me. But I guess I don't have to use it if I don't like it, it is LEGO.
I'm also interested in Emmett's hair. Will he get a new texturised mould, or will he just use that smooth Classic male hairpiece that's been around since the dawn of time? I think it seems a bit pointless to make a new mould that's so similar, but then I always that hair looked really outdated next to all the textured hairpieces we've got today.

I'm most excited about this Minifigure series. I have no idea what to expect... I hope we get that blue and purple Mermaid, and this panda sounds interesting (though I don't recall seeing one in the trailer?).

Really excited for more information.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@LEGOManiac1 - In the midst of Chima and other unappealing themes for a non KFOL how could you not be excited for these sets, they're better designed than just about everything that I found in the front pages of my newest Lego catalogue. Come on.

Gravatar
By in United States,

O_O 17 sets!? What's going to be the price range here?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Gregorovich I think it is the exact same one from the trailer. It looks like a new textured piece with a tuft of hair sicking out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

17 sets seems a bit much, but if there's some good western, space, or castle sets I'll be sure to pick them up!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This hobby is going to destroy me. I can't keep up!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm going to run out of money it this rate with chima, minifigures, city, creator, galaxy squad, hero factory and now this.I used to think lego didn't make enough good themes but now it is a overload of good themes.

17 sets thats going to be expensive. but it seems like to many to me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

17 sets sounds like a huge theme. I wonder what will get knocked off the shelves to make space for it?

Liking the sound of the collectible figures, if only to get that awesome looking Morgan Freeman character wizard fig from the trailer.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm not surprised at the number 17, seeing how Lego has already sunk a boatload of money into the movie itself. If there's anything we know about Lego it's that their marketing strategy is "go for broke". I'm not sure I'm on board with the Lego group, I can't shake the feeling that their flushing money down the toilet trying to be the big toy giant.

Adults are a niche part of their sales, and aside from the advertising LUGs (and whatnot) provide, eventually they won't need to cater to our every whim and desire. I think in 2013 Lego really dropped the ball on overall set quality. I'm just as big a fan of Lego as the next guy here, but when I spend the kind of money I do on a product I need to know I'm getting more than the value of something listed on Ebay (aka it's resale value). I never grasped why people payed as much for certain minifigures as they do, but it seems like Lego has taken notice of that imbalance in set value and just started pooping out detailed minifigures and sticking them in lame sets. I'm 20yrs old, and I shouldn't be liking the Friends theme more than SuperHeroes (etc), but I can't display most of the SH theme! Lego and I aren't on the same planet.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ Surely he'll be in a set? I really want one too!
Having not been sure about a Lego movie, after seeing the trailer and this set I'm really looking forward to it all.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes! Yes yes yes!
This is great. I seriously can't wait. I want to get my hands on a Morgan Freeman "God" minifig.
EDIT: Just noticed in the picture that Emmet has his cowlick and the girl has the hood. I'm even more excited now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awesome! Unlike Clutch Powers, where all the sets were already made, this one must have enough new models to work with. I hope Emmet's hair has his cowlock!

Gravatar
By in United States,

SETS AND A VIDEOGAME? :D

This is awesome... I especially am excited about the new pieces... more sets on my list to collect.

(I'll also have to get a T-shirt :) )

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's about time LEGO realized its potential. Looks to be a lot of new pieces and imaginative ideas to be mined with this line. For too long have they relied on borrowing already licensed property when they should have been developing their own licensed property.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

"The 3D computer animated adventure "
Isn't the movie stop-motion? Sure it has some computer aided visuals, but mainly it is animated with real models.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would like to see an orange batwing, or maybe at least very dark grey.

Gravatar
By in United States,

17 sets, I wonder if that counts polybags or gear

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@EdwinJackson

Im a CG animator and i can tell you its all CG im afraid, its animated to look like stop motion but to get that level in stop motion isn't easy and would be a nightmare to do (why do you think i retrained from stop motion to CG not so much headaches and retakes). i think they have done a good job its done by the company that did a chance of meatballs and they are good. i think because of the jointed characters we usually see in Lego animations seeing a stiff jointed one can be deceiving and getting that realistic look, the film was probably rendered with renderman by Pixar.

I am so looking forward to this film as well as something else to collect in my ever growing list of sets to get.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Whoo go Emmett!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

New minifigs? Green Lantern. Green Lantern. Green Lantern. We're not asking too much.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Anyone getting a Time Cruisers vibe from this.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Will this be the first time a movie themed LEGO set actually looks exactly like it does in the movie?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I had the good fortune to see a preview screening of the Lego Movie on Sunday. The animation was still incomplete, but the writing and performances were very good. I hope they do not change a thing because I had many laughs. I'm a 40 year old AFOL and I brought my 7 year old. The movie was written for both of us and we enjoyed it a lot. I'm not going to give anything away (partly because they made me sign something to that effect) but mostly because I had no real expectations and came out very happy. If you go in expecting the best movie of all time, you'll never be happy. If you go in expecting Clutch Powers II, you will be very, very pleased. It had very much the child-like spirit of a homemade Lego movie (which makes sense incidentally), except with excellent writing, animation, and A-list acting talent. I don't know what the other people put down on their surveys, but Lego if you are listening, don't change anything - don't dumb it down, don't slow it down. Stay on target!

By in United States,

Awesome motorcycle! I'm putting this on my wanted list! *a dull 'ungh' is heard in the background* Sorry guys, that was my wallet.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@SI Builder- I just do not think these sets will be worth it.
Lego Batman has awesome sets and so does Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
That is where most of my money will go!
