2013 Advent Countdown

Posted by ,

Today's the day we can at last break the seals on those Advent calendars we bought way back in September and start building.

This year I'm not going to post three pictures and try to make up something interesting to say about uninspiring models every day. Instead I'll just pick one model a day, or none if they are all boring.

As is often the case, the first window in each contains a minifig so, unable to choose between them, here's a line-up of them all: a policeman, Steph, and astromech droid R5-F7.

If you want to avoid reading these Advent articles so as not to spoil the surprise you can do so by changing your news preferences.

Heads-up to everyone: last year (at least for the Star Wars advent calendar), the official picture of the contents showed them in order. You didn't need to see this daily Brickset news post to know what was coming up next. But this year (at least for the Star Wars), the sets don't appear to be pictured in order. I'm going to rely on this daily post to know which model we're about to open. This will be a lifesaver as I try to steer my older son to open it on days with the ship models and steer my younger son to open it on days with the minifigures.

oh come on Huw! last year's review was really good with the whole "out of 5" system! Thats the only reason i come on this site in december! (since all the January set pics are often posted in november)

Come on, Huw. Your daily advent calendar reviews are what first got me interested in this website 12 months ago. The fact that a lot of the daily models are bad makes your reviews all the more entertaining.

Will you reconsider?

anyone here know how to make a petition to get Huw to go back to reviewing the days' models? :D

By in Denmark,

I built my policeman in the bag, and will do the same with the rest, like I did in 2009! I still haven't opened the bag.

Great with one picture of all three... and great to get started with the countdown... and what a suprise we got a policeofficer in the city one. My son (got the city) is thrilled... so is my daughter (got the friends)!

Yeah, I agree with the others. I would like to see normal reviews like last year.

I Liked the Review's like Last Years,I think Most People here Do ;)

By in Netherlands,

Disappointed in you xD I liked last years daily 'review' about the models.

By in New Zealand,

Awwwlllll! I opened my first window yesterday (something to do with timezones) and I've been hanging out to come on here, read the review and leave a comment! Come on Huw - it's only once-a-year! Think of the children. Better still, think of the AFOLs!

By in Australia,

I give this review 3/5.

Am I right in thinking that's the only place R5-F7 has appeared outside of the recent Y-Wing set?
That would make it a very good figure to get to my mind as I thought the Y-Wing was quite disappointing. I guess it's also rarer than the other two too, so does Star Wars win today?

I like to see daily reviews like last year too Huw, but I can totally understand that it's a lot to do, and saying something meaningful (or anything at all!) about 10-brick builds must get harder every year!

Aw come on Huw! Last December was so much more interesting with the reviews. The out of five system allowed me to chart which one was the best calender. Last year Star Wars won. I was looking forward to doing it again. =-(

By in Australia,

I totally understand where you are coming from huw... I'm on Day 2 on my reviews and I am already finding it hard to write something. But as an AFOL and a parent waking up and seeing how excited my kids get when opening each door is something I will adding to my reviews... if you want to see into the future http://ozbricknation.blogspot.com.au/ has you covered ;)

I'm preaching to the choir here but I gotta agree - last year's review style was great. Please keep up the old style!

@ Tricky Brick - Yes, especially the AFOL's! :D

I dug out my advent calendars this morning which were purchased from Argos during their 3-for-2 offer and I was astounded to find I've been given a 2012 SW Calendar! Unbelievable. Luckily an Argos near some close family has them in stock at half price so I should get a 2013 copy after all. What they heck happened there, I've no idea.

I quite enjoyed the reviews of each set, but I can see how it is pointless and time consuming.

Police figure wins today IMO. Black cap, and I dont have any new police figs.

By in New Zealand,

I second what others have said - I really enjoyed the day by day reviews last year. I've never owned any of the Advent Calendar sets, but found them really interesting.

By in Hungary,

Yeah, one more vote for the "please do the review" protest.
Otherwise, how will I know, when the catapult comes? :D

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I really enjoyed the reviews in the last two years. They nearly have become part of my christmas/advent traditions ;) . So another vote for the "please do the review" protest from me!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Like to add one more vote for the "Please do the review" protest because Huws reviews was the only way for me to get names, with right spelling, on the Star Wars figs and ships I couldn't recognize. More than half of them I think it was.
So if no reviews at least let me know what fig/ship it is ;-) .

Oh man this isn't anywhere near as interesting as previous years. I love your reviews Huw
