Advent day 2

Posted by ,

My pick for today is from the Friends calendar, a cool ice-scooter for Sunday's Stephanie. I don't buy Friends sets normally so I was intrigued to see that they'd modified the handlebar piece, adding an extension to the ends so that the Friends figures, whose hands of course don't rotate, can hold it. It's been in a few sets already, I see.

It's interesting how many pieces they've made specially to work around the deficiencies of the Friends figures design, such as the 1x2 'T' panel to hold their feet when they are seated because they don't have stud receptacles at the back of their legs. No doubt we'll have some in the calendar later on.

The Star Wars calendar features a nondescript brown space ship which I thought was a Geonosian vessel but it turns out that it's Count Dooku's solar sailer. I never would have guessed.

The City calendar has a fireplace.

Come on Huw, if you don't want to, I'd be happy to give a review from the standpoint of a TFOL.

Re: "It turns out.... I would never have guessed" - priceless! :D
Is this the problem of doing Star Wars calendars year on year? Either you get endless rehashed X-Wings or you have to descend into the bottomless pit of geek and embrace the obscurity. I'm sure you're in the majority, but someone out there somewhere could have told you the specs of it from sight! (Like how I know the X-Wing model number is T-65, whereas the Snowspeeder is T-47... there is no limit to how sad us Star Wars junkies can be!)

Well, I'm glad I wasn't the only person surprised by the modified handlebar. It's the first time I've seen it too. Now, I wonder what interesting stuff it could do…

@zips, that's why CapnRex will now be handling the SW reviews: he knows what he's talking about :)

^I thought that might have been it, good call. :) I hope you'll keep giving SW a mention at least so they can all be side by side here, though I guess if CapnRex is doing them would you just be picking between City and Friends for your feature?
(@ilikebigbricks... - thank you for illustrating my point! ;) I've only got that sort of knowledge for the old films and the Timothy Zahn Thrawn era books!)

Well I like the review of the City set. It tells us all we need to know.

That Friends Advent calendar is a PAIN to find in stores and has been sold out on the lego site for awhile. I lucked into finding the last one on a kmart shelf. My daughter loves the Friends series so much a and my son is an out of control legomania so, despite our being Jewish, I got them each advent calendars. His is the City one and he's digging it! Thanks for these reviews. If only there was a Chima calendar!

@CCC, for the record, the fireplace has some fair pieces, including two 1x2 'profile bricks'; which you can never have enough of.

^I was well into them all back in the day, had something around 50 of the novels, but just mentioning them again makes me almost want to get them and read them again! The first Thrawn trilogy was the first of the books I read and I'm pretty sure the Vision of the Past was the last one I read too so they made good book-ends!
