Advent Day 5 - Star Wars

Posted by ,

On the fifth day of the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar we are provided with a Storm IV Twin-pod Cloud Car mini model. This vehicle appeared in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and challenges the B-wing for the most sets created compared with the number of seconds spent on screen, coming in at two so far versus the B-wing's four.

This model is fairly simple, using SNOT techniques throughout almost the entire craft to achieve the rather odd orientation of the vehicle in the film, which I like. The basic shape of the Cloud Car is captured, although the strut which links the two cockpits should be far narrower than it is here which takes away from the appearance of the model in my opinion. I like the inclusion of a trans-blue stud to act as the engine which demonstrates impressive attention to detail, although the shape of each cockpit windscreen is too steep.

Perhaps the biggest issue in my opinion however is the colour scheme, which should be orange. The red shade is acceptable, but the light bluish grey bricks which are the basis of each pod are quite unattractive, and they should have been replaced with pieces of the same colour as the rest of the model.

Overall - 3 - Not a bad model, but the accuracy is lacking in my opinion and I would have preferred the Cloud Car to be orange.

I agree the grey bricks don't look good in the model. But I'd much prefer to add grey ones to my collection than red ones.

I still think the V-Wing wins in terms of most models per second of screen time.

I had to go back to Episode III and watch the end in slow motion to make the thing out.

I thought the same about the grey bricks as I was building it, especially as the centre brick is a red version of the grey bricks......

@bigw1974 - That is a very good point, the V-wing is the champion! I suppose the Turbo Tank is up there as well since it appears for all of about a second at a couple of points in Episode III, and we have had three models of that vehicle (including the upcoming mini set).

^There have been three Turbo Tanks; the 2005 one, the Brickmaster exclusive, the 2009 one, and the upcoming mini one. ;-)

Well, the cloud car is one of those ships whose color "depends on the angle of the light". I'd prefer a darker/reddish orange, but between regular orange and regular red, I stick with red. The grey bricks are indeed out of place, on the other hand.

At a guess, I'd say it's probably read because the original set was. I've noticed that these mini sets like to pay homage to the original LEGO version.

The cloud car has three sets so far if we count this one

I agree with the color thing, but I don't think all the pieces needed where available in orange. Also, I dont think the Turbo Tank can count because it was also in the clone wars series. But if you are only talking about movie appearance then you are correct.

By in New Zealand,

Given the EpII theme of this years calendar - and because it's red rather than orange - I actually assumed this must be a prequel trilogy version of the Cloud City Pod Car but I couldn't face going back to and watching EpII to find out!

The Cloud Car gets a lot more screen time in the re-masted versions, at least on my DVD they get far more than the B-Wing ever did (poor poor B-Wing).

So many things are compromised in these micro builds. Some things come off really well, some you can tell are forced, but that one just looks horrible to me! It kinda makes me think of what an Angry Birds version of the ship might look!!

On the colour choice, the central piece only has side studs on two sides, not all four, so it's not the same piece as the mysteriously grey ones. (A quick check of the brickset parts inventory says:) Neither of those pieces comes in orange, and only the two-stud one comes in red, so that explains the red colour scheme and the odd intrusion of grey.
I'd have expected a Technic piece in the middle too, so the grey pieces could be attached with their bottom face at the back. That way the pods would be more symmetrical and they wouldn't be strangely shorter than the central part, and they could be spaced out with a round plate between if need be. That all knocks it down to a 2 or even a 1 in my view.

And no City/Friends review from Huw tonight? Not like him to miss putting something up, I hope he's okay.

I prefer Red more than Orange. It is really a Red Orange which TLG has never made any parts in. Perhaps they should do that so people stop arguing about what color this thing is.

@zipsforbananas, remember that in his 'Advent Day 1' article he said that he'll post a picture of the better of the Friends and City, but if they're both lame, he won't do anything. Shame, the Friends one doesn't look that bad.

@coson, I was wondering where's today's installment, but you're right, he did say that. I don't know if Huw is reading these, but I'd like to join all the previous visitors who said they miss his reviews. We (me and the kids) do too.

This little comment will probably not change anything... So might as well ramble on a bit more. I ran a small site myself, which still has a healthy, active community. One of the things I did for a while was a "Year In Review" post, once a year of course, summarizing things that happened in our little corner. One particular year (when I felt like Huw probably does now), being a bit tired of having to come up cheerful or insightful things, I just didn't do it. And... there was absolutely no-one asking for it back. So, that's it. I *wish* people on my site would be saying "hey man, I liked your posts, please do more" :-)

So here's my little review for today: the Friends calendar features a little stand. It's a nice little model with Christmassy colors, but unfortunately nothing is displayed on the stand. You can stand one of the minidolls behind it, it's the right size. I give it a 3. City calendar is even more uninspired: a barrel with some tools. When I think Christmas, I think axe, crowbar and handcuffs in a barrel! Don't we all? I guess it is an okay little model with city-like stuff, but I have to give it a 1.

I don't know, but it certainly looks a lot like TLG's current orange to me in the New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels illustration.

I think they look Red-orange in the movie because you see them mainly during sunset on Bespin, so the reds and golds reflect off of the polished hull, but at other points they seem reddish in other sources, like Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, even when parked in the streets...

Still, TLG's Cherry Red is not the right color for this model. They should have used orange, or developed a new red-orange.

My problem with this vehicle is that TLG has never done a good streamlined version in minifig scale.

I agree with kongutahu. Cloud car has now been in 3 sets. 7119 & 9678 are the previous ones.

^I do kind of understand what you're saying; the City one was, well, only good for parts, other than that, there wasn't much good about it.

As for the Friends one, it didn't look THAT bad.

^I wonder if the stall didn't look so bad, but next to all the other ones from previous advent calendars and sets it was too meh to matter. ;)
And I remember that part of the changes now, and it's more than fair enough. Nothing to say about a barrel of tools? Say nothing then! :D

I have to thank you for mentioning the Blog Huw! I truly appreciate it!!
Your photos are always hit for six mate! I can only dream of getting as good as you.
And thanks to "zipsforbananas" for giving me the heads up.
