Advent Day 8 - Star Wars

Posted by ,

Another mini model appears on day eight of this year's LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar, this time a Republic Gunship. This is among my favourite vehicles from the Prequel Trilogy and I think that the mini model here is an excellent representation of this iconic ship.

The anhedral wings of the Republic Gunship are captured perfectly using a pair of white flag components and I like how the twin cockpits have been included using a hinged plate. Perhaps my favourite part of the model however is the lime green tile which forms the nose cone, representative of the lime green highlights on the ship in the film.

This is therefore an outstanding little model, but there is a slight drawback. An identical Republic Gunship appeared in the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar from 2011 (7958) which Huw reviewed, so for those who picked up that calendar while it was around, this is a bit repetitive.

Overall - 4.5 - A sturdy and accurate little model of a great vehicle, but it is a shame that this is not its first appearance in the Advent Calendars.

By in United Kingdom,

I know you love this ship and it is a cracking mini version, and I'm cheating and watching Oz Brick Nation's great little blog that's a day ahead so I knew this was coming. I wondered what you'd deduct for it being a brick for brick repeat of a previous year's offering. Would it have been a 5 if it were original?
Maybe I'm harsh but I'd have docked a whole point for it not being new in any way, were you thinking the same but you love it too much to deduct that much? ;)

Agreed. It's a very nice model, but I think it's a bit lazy to give us another of a model from just two years back...

@zipsforbananas - I rated it on the basis of 'how would I react to this model if it was new to me?' I do love the model though so that influenced my score :o)

I missed 2011's calendar and didn't realise it was a repeat when I opened it up this morning, and I was rather pleased with it, it is a great little model.

the wings are anhedral, not dihedral

yeah i remembered this from the 2011 calendar when i opened it this morning. Very disappointing to have exactly the same again, are there not enough ships in star wars not to be able to make something else? Very lazy imo and i understand the reason for scoring it as you did but i definitely would have given it less due to it being a repeat. even if they were gonna do it again, could they not have altered it at all?

This is one of the best micro-models I have seen in the Lego calendars, along with the Slave I and A-wing. I would have at least preferred a repaint this year though...

My only complaint with the model is that I like the rectangular flags as wings more, but this is a minor complaint.

Actually, the stud on the back of the ship is a different color than the 2011 one xD

^Okay, I mean repainted as in the blue version seen in the 2D animated series or black stealth versions seen in the EU. Good point though...

^^They changed one solitary 1x1 piece? I feel I must retract my comment, it's a completely different model! He he! :D

Overall the calendar seems a little lazy to me, though maybe it's there being so few OT days in it (and one of those being the odd cloud car) that has made me biased against it... actually, now I've said that I think everyone should disregard any future moaning from me on this! :P

That1s the problem with SW advent calendar: there are not enough iconic vehicles to fill every calendar. So either they start making vehicles which are not so famous, or rehash them, like here. Maybe they should make SW advent calendar every 2nd year and do something else: LoTR, Superheros, Chima.

I like it. I didnt get the 2011 calender. So this is new for me. It well represents a cool ship. And it feels to be almost in scale as a model of said ship at minifig scale. So my City minifigs have now become SW AFOL's and have begun hoarding and building Lego Micro SW kits.

Does anyone elses hobby ever occasionally attempt to get oddly creepy on them?

@Yooha: The issue with that is the Star Wars advent calendars always sell like hotcakes, and dropping them would be a much bigger gamble than keeping a steady release cycle.

In any case, nothing wrong with having more than one mini gunship! Much more economical than having multiple full-sized gunships!
