Advent Day 9 - Star Wars

Posted by ,

On day nine we have another mini model, this time an Acclamator Class Republic Assault Ship. This vehicle only appears fairly briefly during the latter stages of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, but it also features heavily in the Clone Wars and various books and video games set during the Prequel Trilogy.

This model is a little too far from the source material for my liking. It is just about recognisable as an Acclamator Class Assault Ship, but the shape has not been captured perfectly and there is far too little detail in my opinion. The tail fin and engines have been recreated nicely, and I like how light and dark bluish grey pieces have been used to break up the design a little. However, the overall shape of the model is too long and not wide enough for my liking. Also, the tip of the ship is far too blunt (an issue which plagued the Star Destroyer mini model last year in 9509), although I can see no way of rectifying this given the limitations imposed by the scale.

The biggest issue for me though is the bridge section, which is completely wrong as far as I can see. This could easily be rectified with a 1x1 round tile in light bluish grey, but the 1x1 plate with clip simply does not work here in my opinion. The relative obscurity of the vehicle combined with the partial failure to capture the shape of the ship might mean that one would struggle to identify what it was immediately. This fact is evidenced by Huw's photo, which he took from the rear not realising which end was the front. Still, I think we can all agree that this is a great shot of the back of the ship!

Overall - 2.5 - Not a bad model, but only a vague representation of the vehicle in the film unfortunately.

By in United Kingdom,

When my brother got this today, He didn't know what it was, and I didn't know what it was :P

Likewise I thought it was some sort of star destroyer, but couldn't place it

I thought it was a hover-tank, hence photographing it this way round.

@Huw I don't blame you for not knowing which end is which. Poor design.

By in United Kingdom,

I must admit we struggled to work out what this one was but on a positive note it makes this year's weapons rack look better!

By in Germany,

Beats the bench from the city calender, though.

Huw, I'd suggest playing a game called Republic commando, considering it contains EVERYTHING about the prequels + Clone Wars. It is also a fun game.

I have to admit, I snickered a bit about Huw's taking the photo the wrong way round. :-)
Sorry, Huw. ;)

^ Agreed, One of the best Star Wars games ever! :-)

By in United Kingdom,

I had no idea what it was either. When I searched on google to see what the one from the movie looked like, compared, the one in the advent calendar looks nothing like the original, the thing that threw me of was the slope at the end.

By in Norway,

I recognised it, and thought it was a pretty good model. It would seem I'm in the minority. I also thought Zam Wessel's speeder was very good, but that might be because I have very fond memories of 7133.

Better than the City calendar today.

Seriously, what did we get? A bench? That's what I'm using it as.

I think we might just be looking at the worst Advent Calendar day of the last three years. A poor excuse for a Republic Assault Ship in the Star Wars Advent Calendar, a four piece bench in the CITY one and a pair of unidentifiable objects in the Friends calendar.

^ I think I agree on that one ;)
I'm not that Happy with the bench :(

^^At least it's only the 8th. Imagine if we were saying that on the 23rd! Maybe TLG have synchronised the bad days so there isn't too much fighting in families that have more than one...? :P

Which way round does it go?!? Charging the amount they do for this calendar it's a real shame... But at least it's a daily lego fix

My son is totally disappointed with the past few days in the City - it's his first Advent Calendar - and he's getting benches and glassware as "toys" each day. I hope it gets better!

^^The picture is the wrong way around with the nose of the ship in the top right corner.

So far I think the FRIENDS calender has been most value for the money. But they are all miles behind the awesome KINGDOMS calender. Those were the days! :-)

@Patch22 - So it was!! Oops! And now it's the 10th? I can't keep up!! :P

It probably is the worst set of calendars. Everyone seems to agree that this is one of the worst models in the worst calendars. And yet it still scores 2.5/5.0.

Last year, there were quite a few 5 out of 10s, and a few 3 and 4, and even a 1 for the pile of tyres and the trolley.

Let's use the whole scale when it comes to rating these.

I know this is off-topic, but when I mark a review as helpful and I check back later and it says that I didn't mark it as helpful and I haven't already Marked as helpful or anything.

^^ Actually, I think 2.5 is about right. It might look nothing like the prototype but nevertheless it's quite a well designed little model of a spaceship (it turns out).

wow, seeing what this is actually meant to look like really ruined the model for me haha :p

I thought it was a mini Star Destroyer, juding by the comment from brix above I don't want to look up what it's supposed to look like now :) i'll just pretend it's a dinky little Star Destroyer and leave it at that :)
