2013 Brickset Holiday Gift Guide

Posted by ,

Perhaps the only thing more joyous than receiving LEGO during the holidays is gifting it!

With that in mind, we've compiled the Brickset Holiday Gift Guide, highlighting our picks for the best offerings from LEGO to help repair your reputation from the ugly sweater you gave last year.

We've chosen various price points to suit your gift giving needs, from stocking stuffers to sets so large you'll run out of wrapping paper! Within each price segment, we'll identify two sets: one appropriate for children, and one appropriate for children-at-heart.

"Stocking Stuffers": $10 and under

For Children: 40058 Decorating the Tree

A Christmas present that's a LEGO set of people gathering around a Christmas tree with presents? That's so meta!

Polybags are generally designed to be impulse buys, and therefore usually do not present the best value for consumers. 40058 Decorating the Tree is an offering that bucks that trend; for $7.99 USD, you get 110-pieces and among them are two minifigures.

Moreover, the set itself does not suffer from the feeling that corners were cut in order to hold to the low price point; the tree is a fair representation, and there are plenty of presents to go under it.

The set is currently $7.99 USD from LEGO shop@home. (For other countries, click here).

For Adults: 850705 Salt and Pepper Shaker set

Salt and pepper shakers serve as conversation pieces just as much as their more mundane job of containment, and being shaken. With that in mind, don't let your loved one pass on the opportunity to profess their love of LEGO and put in on their table for all the world to see!

The Salt and Pepper Shakers are up-sized to 2.5" x 2". The product description says they are 600x larger than a 1 x 1 brick, but somehow that math doesn't add up. Never mind that though, they're still cool.

This set is currently available from LEGO shop@home for $6.99 USD. (For other countries, click here).

Do you have other gift suggestions in this price segment? Feel free to share them with everyone in the comments. And tune in tomorrow for our picks in the $10 - $25 range!

By in United Kingdom,

Even if you go by volume, I make it about 260x bigger.

60000, 60006, 60053, 60054, 60055, 31013, 31014, and 31015 (last 3 being x2 each for $10)

And if anyone has it in their kmart 31017/31018 already, being 25% off this week for Creator sets gives it to be just under the $10 bench mark at $9.74.

By in United States,

I'd suggest doing this project (which I really enjoy) a bit earlier. Since Christmas is only 2 weeks away (yikes!) many of us are already done shopping.

Are the shakers stackable?

@LegoAthos: Thanks for the comment, we'll definitely try to get it up earlier next year. Thanksgiving coming so late this year -- and with it the holiday shopping season -- really compacted things.

Great, but in future, could you put the UK prices as well? Thanks!

@Mickitat -Yes, they are stackable and they actually stick together like real bricks. ;)

@chilis - really? That's so cool, in that case I will get them for myself. :)

As an adult, I'd still rather have the tree.

By in Ireland,

If Decorating the tree hadn't been sold out for the past two weeks it would have made a nice stocking filler indeed...

By in United Kingdom,

I'm smiling to myself as last week, I bought exactly these two items as Christmas gifts for Lego-liking friends...great minds think alike! :-)
