Advent Day 17 - Star Wars

Posted by ,

Today we have another mini model, this time of Padmé Amidala's J-type Diplomatic Barge. This is a ship which appears only briefly at the very start of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones before quickly being destroyed by Zam Wesell's bomb. In the film, the vehicle is chromed all over, but it should come as no surprise that the LEGO version is light bluish grey in colour. I would not have expected any chrome components beforehand, but it certainly would have been nice to see.

For a vehicle which is supposed to be very organic in appearance (much like the Geonosian Starfighter), I think that a reasonable job has been done with this model. It does seem rather chibi in style, but this is fine in my opinion as every major feature of the ship has been captured including the four engines, cockpit and angled wings.

This is a fairly obscure vehicle, but an attractive one. I like the use of 1 x 1 slopes to achieve the sleek curves on the ship in the film, and it is very solidly constructed, so nice and swooshable as well.

Overall - 4 - Perhaps not a particularly interesting vehicle, but a nice representation of the J-type Diplomatic Barge.

My beef isn't with LEGO's rendition but with the original. Why did it sound like a 1940s bomber plane and even look like one but just sleeker.

^^Well, you know, George Lucas took many of his sound effects from real versions, not electronic ones. It's likely he did the same with the Royal Barge. And as for it's appearance, well, that's largely just coincidence, most likely.

I just wisht the wings fit flush against the fuselage and didn't have that gap. Its got some nice parts in it.

This day seems earlier, why?

I had a hard time figuring out what ship this was until I read the review. I like the model as a whole but it doesnt do the original ship justice in design IMO.

I love how this model looks kind of like a train with wings!

@coson perhaps CapnRex101 has nothing else to do at the moment :-)

Second one of these models that my boys and I misidentified at first. Thought the Geonosian starfighter was a wookie skimmer and that this was General Grievous' fighter. I guess the tiny scale makes it hard to be unmistakable or our Star Wars-Fu is weak. Gotta watch all them movies again, I suppose.

@ lego613master - Ben Burtt did the sound design. Lucas just heard it and said "okay." The design is definitely meant to evoke a mix of Spruce Goose and classic Science Fiction ships.

Should have been metallic silver, and the wings should have been 4-stud long wedge plates. Also, the top should have been tile rather than cheese slope to make it a little sleeker and a little more accurate.

Cute, but had it not been in the Star Wars Advent Calendar with a heavy EpII theme, I wouldn't have recognized it.

This actually looks more like the J-type star skiff (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/J-type_star_skiff) from Revenge of the Sith, with the exception of having 4 engines instead of 2. If they were going for the ship from EpII the bridge area should be flatter and the engines should be in the same plane as the wings, not underneath them.

A little bit of work can turn this model into a micro C-130.

Flip the rear gray "cheese slice" and remove the part in front of it.

I believe the light gray tan piece behind the dark clear piece should actually be a dark clear piece... :P

You can never please the Star Wars fans.

^ So true! I bet that's true of any obsessive fan-base, perhaps more so of Trekkies, but any time the fans know more about the subject than the product manufacturers you'll get that problem. We're certainly well up there in the disgruntled leagues though!
