BrickLink designer program voting has commenced
Posted by Huw,The BrickLink Designer Program series one has entered its third phase and you now have the opportunity to vote for your favourite fan designs.
Following the vote and an internal selection process five models will be made into BrickLink sets.
375 designs were submitted, so there's plenty to choose from, even if half of them seem to be either modular or mediaeval buildings, such as the joiner's workshop, pictured.
Take a look through the gallery and cast your votes, then let us know which ones caught your eye in the comments.

There are even more now than yesterday evening. Lots of nice builds, although not a lot stand out to me as being something different. One of the builds I love is the steam roller with workshop.
So many!
Is there an easy way to scroll through them, or do you have to click each one individually?

Open the website on a desktop browser, then you have the voting icons on the overview already.
A lot of nice looking models but none that I can say I want to own & build.
The similarity of so many I think shows how hard it is to come up with a truly novel idea.

Which browser and where? I'm not seeing them.

I came up with a new LEGO modular building MOC that can be placed in three ways on your street I hope you might like it :)

Sorry, my bad. They must have changed this. Yesterday evening the icons were there.
The black pirate ship is great but the lack of sails really hurts it. Not the designers fault obviously.
Lot of generic-looking builds unfortunately. I hope BL staff will make a selection as good as precedent editions.
The example from the article is 11/10 tho, joiner's workshop got my vote !
So many amazing builds. I have put at least 30 love it.
well done everyone. So inspiring.
If you filtered out the modulars there’d be only like 50 options lol
I’m exaggerating, but you get the idea
I also find it very unfortunate that there are many people who have collected their existing mocs instead of making something new, I also expected more variation in the projects.
I think those who made a new MOC did their very best :)
Supporting STL_brick_co’s fabulous modern house modular, go give him a vote!
Can't believe Bricklink still isn't mobile friendly...
I think Lego should remove:
- all licensed MOC’s
- all MOC’s linked to current Lego themes like Modulars
This is out of self preservation. As much as I like some designs: I only collect the ones that are Modular since I want all modulars. So I did get the Construction Site and Lego Shop. Had some doubts about the Venetian Houses but decided to get it anyway since it can be combined with modulars.
The problem is that because Lego won't change the design before they're produced, there are very few which are already at (or are close to) Lego's design standards. I only voted for about 3.
The problem I see as everyone here: too many Modulars (most of them look like the current ones with some changes), and most of them are big (more than 3000 parts): I wish to have more smaller designs (3x horse is amazing) and more variety in themes...

Yeah even most of the nicer ones aren't at "Yes I would buy this as a set" standards, IMO. I spent a lot of work on my model to get it up to those standards but even looking at it now there's a few things that it would need to touch it up to make a set.
Whilst there are many good designs only a few stand out for me that I would actually buy. I preferred the previous BDP with the rejected Lego Ideas sets. They had all previously reached 10,000 votes so the overall quality of the sets was much better.
I agree with other comments about too many modulars and an overall lack of variety.
I wish there was a tag system! Give me tags for Modular, Pirate, Art, Medieval etc. Bricklink!
A lot of nice designs of what are sadly very much same old, same old ideas. A lot of good ideas that are rather average designs.
The only one that took my fancy and I'd probably buy, is the Caravan Theatre.
Castle theme is at his peak :)
My entry is a little bit different from the others even if there are various "things to hang". Hope that people likes it even if I have no hopes at all :)

I voted for a bunch that I liked but have mixed feelings about it: from previous rounds these sets usually end up being super expensive compared to many sets of similar size that are mass produced by Lego through their regular themes (I know the number of pieces is not the only factor to consider but still feel pricey to me) so I may end up not buying any of them after all. It happened last time with the Observatory, beautiful set I was determined to get until the price was announced, I remember the struggle to press the buy button before it sold out. In the end I couldn't justify the price and didn't get it.
I had intended to rate every design but the visible icons yesterday were very hit or miss, and today we need to go into each design individually. I simply don't have that much free time. There are quite a few I like, although probably less than 10% of the total number of submissions. Only about half a dozen received a "Love it" vote. If there isn't at least one modular and one medieval building in the final five then I'm not convinced how successful this program is going to be. From a fans' point of view this is meant to rectify the errors made by LEGO in every Ideas review.

This was one of the ones I voted for but on the assumption that the final set would include sails. Otherwise it just feels incomplete.
There are so many new mocs I had not seen before, all very beautiful, but sadly hitting 3000 piece region so unlikely to be able to afford at $400 but I guess that is usual for detailed mocs.
Similar to my own $50 submission, I was expecting more space, aircraft or even Technic type sets as more amenable to keeping just above the 400 piece minimum requirement to keep your sanity when making instructions following the BL rules. As only 5 are going forward this requirement could have waited (to give someone some time to write AI code to turn a BL .io design into steps) and we would probably have had 1000's of entries.
I like the:

It won't get sails. These are near finished submissions and LEGO designers won't get input."
Then I wouldn't buy it. A sailing ship without sails is quite pointless. It clearly isn't meant to be a wreck.
I focused on modern and futuristic building architecture in my entry, a concept that I hadn’t seen explored very much in the past. https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/291/Modular-Modern-Office-Building
Would like the "like it but won't buy option"
Can only say two besides the one Huw highlighted grabbed my attention
Chichen Itza - Would like Lego to do this one in Architecture theme (though we just had Giza)
Gothic Cathedral - I know Lego steers clear of religious sets
I liked some of the slightly more unusual ideas - though not necessarily unique concepts. I love the 'Ode to Youth' group of skaters (similar to 21334 Jazz Quartet) https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/499/Ode-to-youth:-Skateboard-adventures, and the Apocalypse bunker with pre and post apocalyptic world views https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/173/Apocalypse-Bunker. I also like quite a few of the microscale models, particularly the Painted desert and Micro Railway. The skylines were good too.
My favourite model is the Belfast skyline - completely biased though - I'm right on the doorstep of Belfast! https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/31/Belfast-Skyline

I think it's designed so you're not given a curated selection of projects. Hence why there's no "sort by popularity" or "most comments" or anything like that. That way each one gets a fair shot at equal exposure.
I can see what they are trying to do by making all models available for the vote, but for me it's just overload. They all end up looking the same, and it's not an enjoyable process, so I'll pass. I would much prefer something curated.

It's one of only two I "loved" in the vote. Uncommon idea, looks quite finished and isn't a billion pieces so I would actually be able to afford it.

Yeah what they probably could have done is cut it down by 90% by taking out models that don't stand a chance.

If you like architecture and historical buildings take a look at miy model of the Temple of Artemis: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/583/The-Temple-of-Artemis
Life's too short to wade through all those but I voted for the Space Bar which is quite cool.
There are some nice models, but none that I would buy. Using the 10K Ideas from the past was a better approach. Those were, on average, more polished and more reasonable in size (and therefore cost) because of the limits LEGO placed on the submissions.
I really liked the "bookends" models that I have seen on Ideas in the past. They are both nice, and practical. Wish some of those would get selected.
I voted for about ten, but only three I voted "I love it".
The whole thing seems to follow the motto "quantity over quality" imho.
I’m a big fan of the BLDP but I have to admit that I was just significantly underwhelmed after browsing 375 submissions. Not for me was the story of the day.
Ugh, the bricklink UX really is bad, isn't it? It's 2023, responsive websites should not be optional...
Some interesting designs, but looking at the Ideas process, I've realized the Lego designer input is really key to getting a good set. We all complain about changes to designs, but without it, you end up with nice mocs but poor build experiences.
Still, the Lego ecosystem is big enough for sets I don't care about, I hope those of you that like these models get the one you want!

I enjoy the booknooks or whatever it's called where it goes between your books and adds a little scene. I might try making some of those on my own, they are a cool display option that isn't immediately noticeable.
I was sorta hoping for more small-and-cheap options here. I'd love to buy something from one of these someday, but nothing here really seems to be for me; and while I'm sure a lot of them are impressive, most seem like they'll be far beyond my price range, so I didn't look closely at a lot of them.
Even so, though, a few caught my eye; most especially the Mountain Fortress and the Lost Temple. While I have no illusions about ever affording them myself, I hope they both do well regardless ^^
I also find the one of the lizard really cool as well - the one where it's coming to 'life' off the page as the artist draws it. I'm not sure it's something I could see myself buying even so, but it's definitely a very appealing model ^^

An overwhelming number of sets with very little stand out and the voting system as it stands is kind of flawed. Nobody is going to or has the time to open up 375 entries to cast a vote so only personal preferences will get any type of input.
The older system for the BDP seemed more logical and feasible than this. One primary example is the Pirate Ship with no sails...no sails would probably result in no sales.

Thank you I appreciate it and the vote! Here is the link for anyone interested!

Not one Technic model in that large list - the closest to Technic is the orrery.
Surprisingly, the models I liked the most were Pirates themed (black ship is very nice). There were also more than a few very attractive modulars. I was expecting more Space related material - there are no 'real' space at all (i.e. NASA, Roscosmos, ESA, etc).
There are also a few odd selections (the airstrip??)
The voting system is too cumbersome. Best of luck to all the designers - very good skills shown!

The train one is amazing. But my problem is that my bookshelves are overflowing, so I don't need bookends. I need book...middles. :P So making a little scene like that would be fun. In fact, I'm considering rebuilding a little bridge I made into a small booknook.
Can Brickset please relay to TLG that something went wrong with submissions this time?
I assume the problem was a lack of notice(less than 60 days to create models) and the fact that it was announced during the Holiday season. Most builders probably had less than 30 days which means submissions were either unfinished or had previously been completed. There is also few prior Ideas projects which implies that TGL may not have reached out to creators.
Have not gone through all of them yet, but l really love "modular demolition site". It's so simple but looks fun to put in a modular city

True!
There's so many, geez. So far I've voted for Brachiosaurus altithorax, but I'm only up to C after sorting alphabetically by title.
I may have another look but on first glance there were only 2 or 3 that stood out for being unique and likely affordable.
I now own the Modular Lego store, 50s diner and Studgate station from previous Designer Program rounds. They are OK builds, but for me they just lack a certain wow factor. This new round the modular apartments and Brick Cross station stand out. The rest doesn't interest me. It's a nice program for the designs that are rejected by Ideas though.
Shameless plug for my project:
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/484/City-Bus-and-Bus-Stop
It's an 8-wide city bus which has many seats for minifigures and actual walking space in between the seats, something I feel is missing from the City lineup which only produce 6-wide buses. It's one of the more affordable options, though I had to inflate the part count somewhat to be able to include at least one passenger.
There's a lot of negativity around the voting but honestly it makes a lot of sense to me.
Lego Ideas has a really bad platform where popular projects are floated to the top and everything else is buried. Visibility is really low. Here everything is presented to viewers the same regardless of comments or votes or views or anything of the sort.
Additionally having "not for me", "like it", and "love it" allows them to evaluate not just number of votes, but the ratio. A project could have double the votes of another project because someone shared it allover the place, but the ratio of negative:positive could be much lower than a project with half the votes. Provides another point of data to consider IMO.

If recollection serves, fan designers were welcome to resubmit previously adjudicated Ideas ideas. And the preliminary intent here is for this process to be evergreen so any submissions not ready for this round can always get submitted for later rounds.
My favorite at the moment is probably the Magician Automaton.
Small, likely affordable, and an interesting idea with play value.
Also, with the complicated and time consuming voting process, is anybody really going to bother about voting "not for me"? I'm certainly not going to waste my time to vote about 360 ideas "not for me". Takes ages to vote for the ones I do like. That's more than enough for me.
I did my Lego duty and voted.
Maybe my work-life balance just sucks, but I don’t have time to critically examine 375 sets so I can tell LEGO which ones they will make the most money from… Maybe they could cut it down a *little* more?
All the same, congrats to the designers and their hard work! Win or lose, I hope you are all super happy with your designs!

Yeah, well, I would need about 3000 VIP points or something to go through and curate that list where every third set is something ZERO people in the world would put money on.
Put some work in, Lego.

Nice work, that looks awesome!
I’m a bit cautious about the likely prices, but I really do like the Chinese Restaurant and Glass Studio modulars. The Glass studio in particular has some really original geometry and colour design, and yet would still fit really well alongside the other modulars.

I came up with a new LEGO modular building MOC that can be placed in three ways on your street I hope you might like it :)
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/377/The-little-post-office"
I'm confused... It's a corner modular, but also not a corner? On every official Lego modular corner, the sidewalk wraps around the corner. It looks like this post office only has a walkable sidewalk on one side, but connection points on one side and the back like a corner. ...and one of the sides with connection points also has windows and exterior detailing? I'm confused as to how this is supposed to fit into a modular layout.
I tried to start voting yesterday when this went live but the random shuffle and display of sets each time it loads & having to click on each one is annoying & super time consuming. I gave up after about 20 votes. I need to get into the right frame of mind to try to slog through 375 different sets. There's got to be an easier way.
There are a few really good options for modulars, but as a fan of the series, it's tough to reach Lego-levels of colors and design quality. Which is understandable since they have teams for graphic design and for building, which is not the case with these submissions. Still, off the top of my head, the Glass Studio, the Modern Office, and the Season Gardens would be really nice, along with a few others that feel closer to being complete.
I would have liked to have seen some more botanical submissions (since they'll never pass in Ideas) but perhaps part availability in the right colours is an issue since the official sets rely on recolours to be interesting and look good.
Mostly I was bored looking through all of them, the user interface is pretty terrible which didn't help but there were very few that grabbed my attention. The joiner's workshop is definitely one of the best ones. Some of them were clever but I'd never buy them (the 3x scale horse for example).
This one is awesome! https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/119/Four-Seasons-at-City-Park---Modular

To avoid the random shuffle, you can order the sets by title which will keep them in alphabetical order.
The Brick Cross Station stands out for me. As a railway station fan I skipped Studgate because of its vast footprint and was disappointed The Meeting Place didn't get selected in Ideas when it reached 10k.

"I tried to start voting yesterday when this went live but the random shuffle and display of sets each time it loads & having to click on each one is annoying & super time consuming. I gave up after about 20 votes. I need to get into the right frame of mind to try to slog through 375 different sets. There's got to be an easier way."
To avoid the random shuffle, you can order the sets by title which will keep them in alphabetical order."
But it totally resets every time I go back requiring even more clicks on my part. But it's working a little better now since it seems to be returning me to the page I was previously on after another click.
A nod to the creators of these designs for making their imaginations visible with Lego bricks. A shout out to support my Personal Top 4 (please consider visiting their submissions to vote):

"The polar bear" by @BriquesdeLoic >> https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/273/The-polar-bear
These four gorgeous builds all first caught my eye, then continued to hold my interest.
The two medieval sets are immersive, rich with story potential, and compatible with my own Lego universe narrative, without being unnecessarily fussy. The two arts sets are visually stunning, with striking use of colour contrasts and bold delineation to portray a clear and compelling moment in time.
Of many gorgeous and creative builds submitted, my Personal Top 4 are potentially the sets that I would $buy$ rather than only appreciate from afar :)

For sure! If it makes it to the crowdfunding stage, I'll be sure to add some more snow on the roofs!
Thank you for the support!

The Medieval Stonemason's Guild got my vote. A very fresh and unique take on the Castle theme with great execution, nice detailing and reasonsable piece count. I really hope it moves to the next round.
My 2 favorite ones: (and they have a reasonable parts count)

"will you still have to checkout from the Lego site?....or will this be thru the Bricklink site like before?"
Last time sales were made through Lego.com for payment so probably the same this time.
A lot of the projects are very similar, but there are still some really unique ones such as: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/335/Astarr-and-Soluu
^ Nice to see a Bionicle-ish submission.

Nice work, that looks awesome! "
Thanks :)
Some good submissions but far too many choices IMO. Difficult to see the wood for the trees (or the bricks for the LEGO!).
Lots of modular and medieval buildings that I guess will be popular.
I particularly like these two:

"I was sorta hoping for more small-and-cheap options here. I'd love to buy something from one of these someday, but nothing here really seems to be for me; and while I'm sure a lot of them are impressive, most seem like they'll be far beyond my price range, so I didn't look closely at a lot of them."
This smaller set caught my eye: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/399/Little-park

This is the 1 for me.
There's one set that stood out to me and it's just mentioned above here, but just look
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/117/Medieval-Stonemasons-Guild
It contains so much. I love the contrast in the brickwork. The beauty and awe of a cathedral building is being captured even in it's part completed state. Very impressive to do in lego. You can feel transported to a Ken Follett world. It's so alive. As a display piece it's like this little monument to all the effort and dedication that goes into building something truly grand and the awe it can generate to people of all walks of life. And it's such a lively scene, giving it a ton of play value. Of course, it draws classic castle nostalgia feels as well....it really is a special piece. I hope it makes it through.
What i like more feedback creators,...
Looks like the website has fixed the buttons on the main page, so now you don't need to open 375 different tabs to vote all of them. Glad we'll see the picked projects in May, rather than the more extended wait of Ideas, gonna have to look forward to it.
Some interesting stuff, but I felt a growing antipathy toward modulars and castle stuff toward the end of it, as it felt like there were fifty of the same model from each of those categories. At least there's some hope the internal review will cull some of them for a greater variety. Lots of them also feel like they don't meet sufficient justification to buy when the Lion Knight's Castle currently exists. Plus the visible problem of many submitters taking max part count as a challenge.
Didn't find too much I was astounded by. Probably a dozen in love category, and twice that many in liked. Maybe I expected too much, or am too discerning a buyer.
Too many to look at - 32 pages, each with 12 designs. I gave up after page 5. I just don't care enough to go through and vote for them. Will see whats offered at the end and go from there.

I bought almost all of the BDP invitational sets and agree with your sentiment. Lego is clearly getting greedy and that’s why they rushed out this new program so quickly. They want to do 15 BDP sets every year with 3 intakes per year. It’s just too short of a window for quality designs, and the novelty of “limited” sets is bound to wear off if Lego is endlessly pumping them out. I feel like Lego should change the program back to only being rejected ideas submissions and have a pool of like 20, producing only the most popular 5. Plus they should only do the program once every two-three years. That would lead to quality and beloved designs while also keeping the program exciting. I don’t see myself buying any of these series one sets unless the prices are very competitive and the 2 or 3 I really liked get selected.
Your design is an absolute banger visually!

"I focused on modern and futuristic building architecture in my entry, a concept that I hadn’t seen explored very much in the past. https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/291/Modular-Modern-Office-Building "
Guess I should have waited a few days before casting my votes. A quick check seems to indicate that my votes are done.
I love this lizard! It's definitely my favorite out of all the submissions. So different from other ideas.

I looked at the palette available for about a week before I started building my entry in December. Its a fantasy airship with some interesting build techniques and I hope people like the dirigible frame construction as much I did when I created and built it. The relatively short period for a completely new design and learning studio along the way made it hard for creations that use a lot of changing angles. I built it and rebuilt it which led to to a lot of streamlining that I wouldn't experience when building a MOC. So if you have any interest in something that's not a building I'd be honoured if you take a look: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/309/The-Cloud-Chaser-Fantasy-Airship
