Advent day 24

Posted by ,

Christmas Eve has arrived at last, and we are treated to an excellent minifig in today's City window. It's Santa, of course, pictured here with yesterday's sleigh. As far as I can tell it's the same as the one in CMF series 8, except this one is made in a LEGO factory and not one in China. It's a vast improvement on the normal Santa that has been used in regular sets up until now.

My wife has been opening and building the Friends calendar this year and she was disappointed not to have a Santa in hers. Of course there isn't a Friends version of him, but who knows, maybe one year there will be.

Our three calendars are lined up side by side and this morning she said 'look at all the stuff in your calendars compared to mine' and she's right: the Friends calendar does seem to contain much less than the others. It has 40-odd pieces less, and I suspect many of the parts are tiny 1x1 plates or tiles, or other small things. Many days' windows contained just a couple or three pieces which is a pretty poor show, even if one of them is an animal or handbag or something.

All that remains then, is for me to thank Chris, the Capn', for his excellent reviews of the Star Wars calendar and to wish you all a Happy Christmas. As usual I hope all your presents rattle!

We currently own 5,802,026 sets between us, according to the home page: I wonder if it'll be up to 6 million by the end of the year? :)

Shame, last year's City advent was the only LEGO advent calendar I ever bought. Now, they HAD to include one of my favorite CMF's that I never got on the last day this year. Oh well!

Merry Christmas, Huw!

I'm going to take the plunge and buy a Friends calendar next year and let the OH get Lego City.
Even if it's bad it's gotta be better than cheap stale chocolate.
I haven't actually opened the rest of my calendar past 8...

Why haven't you been doing the other days, a countdown should be a countdown no matter how "boring" the item inside is, plus I don't think any of them have been boring. Huw, just some advice for next year, let someone more interested take over so that we can have a more in-depth countdown.

I really hope we see a Friends Santa doll next year. I was happier with the Friends calendar this year than last, but perhaps I had lower expectations this year. Lily, the MP3 player, and ice skates were enough to make the Friends calendar a worthwhile winner for me, and Stephanie's clothing too.

The biggest disappointment with the Friends calendar was the squirrel. It seems like he was supposed to be the highlight of the calendar, but colored and printed the way he is, he's a figure that most Friends fans would already have. A new color or printing would have been nice.

This year I bought the Star Wars and city calendars and must say both were better than last years where the Star Wars in particular I found disappointing.

I think this is the best city calendar we've seen for three years as I wasn't impressed with 2011's and last years wasn't much better.

By in Netherlands,

Really love this Santa minifig!
The sleigh is also a lovely item, so I am happy with this items for my winter village.
This Santa will be the real one, the one from last year was much less like a 'real' Santa.

Merry Christmas everybody!

@Firox, I have to agree, and meant to say so in my article: this year's City calendar has indeed been better than in previous years. I much prefer self-contained models rather than bits and pieces of fire station or prison cell or whatever.

@miamiheat631, I never said it would be a countdown and did mention on day one that I'd only be covering the interesting days. Feel free to get in touch next year to photograph and think of something worth saying about them every day.

The white printing looks so much better than on the CMF one…

I love the Father Christmas minifigure.

I'm going to keep him on permanent display rather than put him back in storage after Christmas.

By in United States,

This was a pretty good advent calender. Didn't bother with it the past 2 years, but this one is at least mostly Christmas oriented.

@Huw What isn't interesting about a toy train or crane? I think I definitely will get in touch next year because this year's coverage has been horrible, especially in the last week and a half or so!! :(

By in Taiwan,

My son and daughter had the City and Friends calenders. I also thought the Friends one was a bit lacking. Plus, what there was seemed repetitive from 2012's. But she wanted it, she got and honestly she enjoyed it for the most part. Hope they put a bit more creativity into the 2014 one.

As for 6 million by the end of the year, seems totally possible provided we all do a post-Christmas update of our sets lists. I'll get to work on mine. :)

Merry Christmas everybody.

What struck me this year was just how this years City Advent Calender stood head and shoulders above the other two. It had such a nice broad mix of items, sub themes and Minifigs. But it all worked together to become a playable whole. This years Star Wars calendar was great, and reasonably paralleled the City one, except in one key way. All of the extra special pieces that came bundled in City. The SW Minifigs were entirely bare bones. Whereas the city figs were a MOC'er and customizes delight. Each came with extra special pieces. Bandana's, hats, cups, food, beards, everything. Every fig had more than expected. It was a delight. The SW one nicely gave you exactly what was expected, nothing more. The Friends set felt more than a bit stingy. You're getting less than you expected to be there.

Granted the SW calendar wins for best figures with the lower cost new Scout Trooper and the delightful exclusive young Boba Fett.

I'm very impatient to open what is standing under the christmas tree...My wife and my daughter are still sleeping so i have to wait...
This year we had got the city and the friends advent calendars and the city was excellent. The Friends one very disapointing.
Anyway every year in december that's always a pleasure to open a small box everyday.*

Merry christmas everybody !

I thought it was weird that they included a collectable minifigure instead of a city one.

My presents did indeed have rattling. Got Minecraft Village, Winter Village Market, OverBorg Attack, Hover Hunter, and Nindroid MechDragon.

I think I can add another 100 to the total if I go back and look at at collectable mini figs I bought for customization.

By in Denmark,

I got six of those fisherman beards yesterday: two from the advent calender, two from Winter Village Market and two from A LEGO Christmas Tale.
