New site progress, and the winners are...

Posted by ,

Once again, I thank everyone -- over 800 of you -- who have tested the new site and provided feedback. I've responded to many of your feature requests and fixed most of the bugs, so I've decided to launch it as is, in two weeks' time, on the 3rd of February.

This is not to say that once it's launched that that's it, and nothing will be changed; it will be continually improved and refined and new features added but if I don't draw a line now to prevent feature-creep, it'll never be launched.

The header font still needs to be improved, and I'll be doing that later this week. I'm replacing the free Google Font Arvo with a commercial font, Museo Slab, which is higher quality and renders much better. Also, I'll be running the site through markup validators and improving accessibility in some areas.

As promised, I've pulled 10 names 'out of the hat' who will each receive a box of polybags. So, congratulations to Simon Johnson, Nathan, Peter81, Mark Soileau, sebfrogs, abri, Nick Tomlinson, Ben Lesso, shamrockgold and David Graham.

I'll be in touch to get your addresses.

Please continue to use the site and let me know, via the contact form or the feedback form, if you find any more problems.

Thanks for the heads up, and I ask myself, will this site be still up and running?

Is it possible to add a feature so you can go back to the current site, so once this new site is launched, you can go back? You know, for the people who really aren't the biggest fans of the new site.

No, because then I'd have to do double the work to upkeep two sites instead of one.

Ah, I see. Oh well. I'm growing quite fond of the new site, though.

Aw, darn, didn't win.

Oh well, I'm still anxious for the new layout release! Maybe we can customize the color of the background?

Congratulations to all the people who won (I didn't say the name because I'm lazy :P)

Hi Huw, I just accessed the new site with my iPhone. I did a search using Google Chrome, and the results were not good. The text I typed appeared white (in a white box), and many of the images weren't displayed. I switched over to Safari and it worked just fine. Thanks!

I'm just pleased this is a FREE SERVICE that I don't have to pay for. Many thanks to @Huw for having the best LEGO information site out there.

You should launch it on February 7, when The LEGO Movie releases! I'm so excited for it to come. It looks so much COOLER than the current site!

I think you misspelled one of those names. You see, that one right there in the list does not spell MCLegoboy in the slightest.

By in Singapore,

Is it possible for the gallery view to display more than 4 items per page? It's really a waste of precious screen estates when there is so much white space not utilized. I used to be able to see tens of items in a page, and have the option to zoom in to see more details in an item, but now I can't even zoom out to see 8 or 10 items per page :(

I'm using Samsung Galaxy S3 and Sony Android Tablet.

Edit : I'm using Chrome btw, on Dolphin it's slightly better with 9 items per page. Funny thing is in Chrome even if I reduce text size it doesn't reflect on the web page, the same goes if I tried changing text size on a system level.

Thanks for taking the time to update the site Huw, and for listening to everyone's suggestions and input. It's looking great!

I'm gonna miss this old site. One question - will we be able to make the background dark or something (sort of like a light switch feature), because it is very bright to me, even with the brightness of my monitor turned all the way down...

By in Romania,

After trying the new site for a few days I don't want to return to the old one. So that's a clear sign that the new site is better...
Thank you for implementing the item numbering in the set tabs. Now I will not click on a tab just to find it has zero content.

One thing I'd like to see on the new site that seems missing is to show the part in on the "Containing Part..." page.
For example: I see the sets on http://new.brickset.com/sets/containing-part-4521681 but have no way of knowing easily which part they actually contain.

^ Fair point. Not sure where it would go, though.

By in France,

I think for now the main graphic problem is background white, it tears the eyes, especially on high resolutions (wide).
A feature to customize the background color would be a real plus (and relatively simple to implement).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Why do you say that, I just don't understand. EVERY major site has a white background these days. Show me one that doesn't...

I dont like the way the Amazon deals are displayed now. It doesn't show the change from the day before, is it going to stay that way?
