New images for 1979

Knight's Joust

Our journey through the 1970s concludes today with new images for sets released in 1979. Actually, we added many of them earlier in the year when we covered Fabuland and Scala so today the new images of interest are of mostly of Castle, Space and Technic. By the looks of things, in LEGOLAND, the situation regarding minifigs in vehicles was improving: it looks as if they fit in most of them, but the poor taxi driver in 608 has to run alongside his car still :-)

1979 saw the launch of Space sets outside of the USA, so we were able to photograph nearly all of them in the archive, which doesn't generally have US numbered sets. However one exception would seem to be Galaxy Explorer, 497 (US) and 928 (ROW). There's a picture of bluemoose holding the US version of this classic set in the archive in the BrickJournal article about our visit, but for some reason 928 wasn't there.

You may have noticed in some of the pictures that the boxes have stickers on them. All boxes in the archive have a sticker on them, and thankfully in most cases they are on the side. Unfortunately in a few instances they've been stuck on the front which somewhat spoils them (e.g. 877)

Looking at the year's selection again today I think my 'set of the year' award goes to 383 (6083 in the USA) Knight's Joust, which looks so vibrant and exciting on the box.

So, that's the '70s completed but haven't finished yet: we still have around 100 images of sets from the late 1960s to add as well as a handful of other rare sets, some of which are not even listed in our, or any other online database, so stay tuned!

Brings back some memories, I actually got 497 for my Birthday that year, I was 4 and it was my first lego set of note.

Excellent ! Obviously minifig packs aren't a new phenomenon - I never realised that LEGO released 'classic space' spaceman packs. Great to see pics. Just wish I had those minifig packs....

There are now only 2 'mainstream' sets in my collection without an image in your database - 151 (a track pack from 1966) and 588 (the alternate set number for the 1979 police station set) - do you have these pics ? If not let me know and I'll send you set images.

We have 151 ready to add with the '60s images, but not 588, which was US only, so a picture of that would be welcome, thanks.

i like the design of this set much more than today's lego castle sets, they add more color and feels like there is a story going on.

I feel lucky to be alive in a time where Lego horses aren't horses made of lego bricks.
