BrickList: Classic Castle - the first cycle

Classic Castle - the first cycle

1984 marks the relaunch of the Castle line from a Town subtheme to its own fully fledged theme. A list of the sets that formed part of the relaunch (with my comments) can be found in a separate list: http://brickset.com/bricklists/?75

In the 80s, most themes had a "cycle" of 3 - 4 years (the lead time of the design cycle), with a lot of new sets during the first year, then dribbles and drabs in the next 2 or 3 years.

The first castle theme cycle lasted from 1984 to 1987. This list details the sets from 1985 - 1987 (again with comments!).

1. 6102: Castle Mini Figures

Minifig sets are almost an afterthought, and these were popular in the early to mid-eighties. This is just the regular minifig pack with 3 Gold Lions and 3 Black Falcons, each of which have a different headgear and weapon. These were good for army building, which makes a lot of sense for the Castle theme.

2. 6011: Black Knight's Treasure

Where 6010 was almost a parts pack, this little cart is a treasure in its own way. It takes the Black Falcons' colours of black and yellow and red and uses those effectively in this cart. This was also the smallest set in this cycle to have the treasure chest.

3. 6055: Prisoner Convoy

This is the largest set released in 1985 and it is not very large. 1985 was the first year of the "dribs and drabs" and it shows with 3 tiny to small sets. This set though has 5 horses and was a good way to build up horses in the first cycle.

6. 6067: Guarded Inn

This European-only set is long sought after for its unique parts and the 2nd female Castle minifig. The design of the set is gorgeous and it has a modular castle wall (see the modular wall list at http://brickset.com/bricklists/?122 ). This set was selected as one of the sets to be re-released as Legends (set #10000)

7. 6041: Armor Shop

1986 was a year that played up the non-warfare elements of castle with a "taxi" cart, an inn and this set, an armoury shop. The set includes a shop built into the modular Castle wall and has every single weapon produced in the castle line.

8. 6074: Black Falcon's Fortress

This is the mid-cycle replacement for the first Black Falcon Castle (6073) and it is bigger than its replacement. It continues to use the Black Falcon theme colours, but omits the red for the yellow. The castle is asymmetrical like its predecessor and includes an instructing "house" structure on the wall.

9. 6062: Battering Ram

The original siege tower (6061) gave way to this mid-cycle replacement of this functional battering ram, and this time it's Gold Lion vs Black Falcon, with the latter taking over the wall. Although the boxes of both sets are about the same, this set includes more minifigs and expands the wall to include two hinges, a tower and a door.

10. 6017: King's Oarsmen

1987 was a year for castle boats and this is the smaller ship of the line. Despite the fact that this is a tiny set, the boat is packed with 2 figures and has quite a bit of useful accessories.
