BrickList: "Space" set that best reflect its subtheme
"Space" set that best reflect its subtheme
This is a collaborative list between Biggy and Novelty. Between us, we decided to pick out the best and most iconic set in each Space subtheme (and a few other space related subthemes) that best reflect the spirit of that particular subtheme.
The Star Wars sets were chosen on a slightly different criterion - not only do the sets have to be the best and most iconic, they also have to represent the definining moment or the theme of the movie. Because of the wide scope of Star Wars, we have limited ourselves to each of the 7 movies, and then only to minifig scaled sets (and thus excludes all mini- and mid-scale models and the UCS, which really deserves its own subtheme).
As usual, suggestions welcome - contact Novelty via his profile. Also, suggestions for future collaborative lists are welcome. If you would like to develop a collaborative list with Novelty or Biggy, please feel free to contact them as well.

1. 358: Rocket Base
Pre-classic Space.
We both agree that this rocket base pretty much sums up the best set before the advent of classic space proper. The other set 801 is an earlier set and didn't make an impression on either of us. This set clearly is the forerunner of what was to become the Space Theme and as such, it gets our pick.

2. 928: Space Cruiser And Moonbase
Classic Space - White and Red era.
This is the most famous set of the new Space theme back in the late 70s and early 80s. There's nothing more iconic than this set for Classic Space. The space logo seemed to be the same as the box-shot of this set up till about 1982.

3. 6950: Mobile Rocket Transport
Classic Space - Yellow era.
We decided to split up Classic space based on when new minifigs were introduced. The all yellow minifig was introduced with 2 sets in 1982 and this set captures what was interesting about space then - huge rockets!

4. 6891: Gamma V Laser Craft
Classic Space - Black and Blue era.
The mid 80s saw the introduction of the blue and the black classic space minifig and it was difficult to pick a set for this era. We selected this set because it was the first detachable cockpit ship of the era. It also comes with a small blue robot/android, which was the "in" thing of the mid 80s.

5. 6932: Stardefender 200
Futuron.
The decision for Futuron was unanimous. This set has all the themes found in Futuron, from the huge cockpit and the octagonal pieces to the buggy on the ground.

6. 6894: Invader
Blacktron.
There aren't too many Blacktron sets to choose from. The huge base had a little of everything and looked nice. The smallest set 6876 seems to have it all. However, we settled on this set, which comes not only with the standard black and yellow and trans red colour scheme, but is detachable and can be reconfigured/recombined. It also has the on-board storage capacity common to most Blacktron sets and has a tiny robot/android.

7. 6886: Galactic Peace Keeper
Space Police.
The space police introduced the modular prison and almost all sets had that feature. We chose this set as it is the most compact of all the sets with the feature, yet still looked great. The Space Police colours are all there in the set, including the large trans-red cockpit hood.

8. 6923: Particle Ioniser
M:tron.
Both of us missed out on this set, and perhaps that's why we agree that this set represents M:tron the best. The colour scheme of red with black and grey and neon yellow highlights is typical of the subtheme and it comes with the usual M:tron magnets and storage box, plenty of tools and a robot/android. This is one of the few choppers in the Space theme.

9. 6981: Aerial Intruder
Blacktron II.
What set the Space Police II apart from the other themes was the jetpack/backpack and the detachable cockpits, which were interchangable with most of the ships. This set has both and is also pays homage to the set that made it to our Futuron slot.

10. 6957: Solar Snooper
Space Police II.
The revamped Space Police had a larger prison which could be mounted on a vehicle, or "picked up" by the holes in its sides. This set has both those features built into both its vehicles.

11. 6973: Deep Freeze Defender
Ice Planet 2002.
This ship was splashed across many of Lego's promotional materials the year that the Ice Planet were introduced. It has all of the Ice Planet features - skis, the trans-orange saw blades and rockets with magnets. In addition, the ship is modular and can be reconfigured in a number of ways.

12. 6939: Saucer Centurion
Spyrius.
The Spyrius theme was about technology stealing and this set, with the dual cockpit, the robotic arm and the "getaway car" encapsulates the theme. It is also nicely designed in the red and black and trans blue Spyrius colours.

13. 1789: Star Hawk II
Unitron.
Internationally, the monorail was more popular and it was shown on most of Lego's promotional materials. However, we decided that it was too generic of the Unitron theme, which consists of interchangable cockpits. This US-only set has the interchangable cockpit (which will fit on the monorail and the ground vehicle) and has an interesting bird of prey design.

14. 6339: Shuttle Launch Pad
Launch Command. (Town subtheme)
There was a US-only shuttle launch pad for the Town theme a few years before this subtheme, and it served as the basis for this entire subtheme. Still, the main thrust of this Town subtheme was the Space Shuttle and this set - with the Space Shuttle on the launch pad was used extensively in all the promotional materials.

15. 6938: Scorpion Detector
Exploriens.
The Exploriens were about discovery, with giant telescopes, holographic stickers and magnetic dual colour images that can be viewed under different "lenses" to give different pictures. This set has all those elements, and also includes the triangular "wing" piece that was introduced in the Exploriens subtheme.

16. 6900: Cyber Saucer
UFO.
We picked an actual flying saucer to represent the UFO theme. We thought the smaller of the two saucers better represent the theme, than the larger saucer. This saucer had the new large quarter saucer piece, the first non-human space minifig and an actual spinning saucer feature.

17. 2152: Robo Raptor
Robo Riders.
There were only a handful of sets for this theme and it wasn't promoted majorly internationally. US S@H uses two of these sets to promote the theme, and we choose this set as the best looking of the two.

18. 6907: Sonic Stinger
Insectoids.
In a subtheme filled for sets that looked like giant insects, this set takes the cake. The huge transparent wings and bulbous eyes gives it a great look for the theme. It also comes with a battery powered light and sounds system, complete with insect sounds.

19. 6457: Astronaut Figure
Space Port. (Town subtheme)
The Space shuttle of a few years earlier gave way to a more classic-space inspired town subtheme that was spaceport. The theme had new backpacks, golden visors and a futuristic looking spaceship. We picked this simple set to represent the subtheme due to its simplicity, although the buggy 6463 also gets a close nod for 2nd place.

20. 7190: Millennium Falcon
Star Wars Episode 4 - A New Hope.
We both agree that the Millenium Falcon fits the bill here. Choosing which though, is the tricky bit. Since this is Episode 4, the UCS version is eliminated. Likewise, the non-minifig scale versions (key chain, miniscale, mid-scale) were also elimiated. Which leaves us with 2 other version. We chose this version because it looks cleaner with the UFO saucer parts.

21. 7130: Snowspeeder
Star Wars Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back.
The episode is famous for its ice battle so we choose the snowspeeder as being representative of this movie, as well as being a famous vehicle in its own right. Again, we only limited the choice to minifig scale versions, and we choose the first one as that is the one with the better design and aesthetics.

22. 6210: Jabba's Sail Barge
Star Wars Episode 6 - Return of the Jedi.
There's no shortage of sets for this movie, from the X-wing in the swamp, to the Death Star. However, the one thing that captured most fan-boys was the image of Princess Leia in a golden bikini on a huge ship. Hence the selection of this set for this subtheme.

23. 7171: Mos Espa Podrace
Star Wars Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.
The one thing that captured the imagination in this movie was a young Anakin Skywalker racing in these incredible vehicles. There are bigger and better designed sets in this subtheme (Gungan sub!), but the racers, in their wild and zany models best captures the movie.

24. 7315: Solar Explorer

This subtheme seemed to be a merger of the Space Port Town subtheme and Aliens/Insectoids Space subtheme. We picked this set because it stood out the most, and was splashed on the forefront of Lego's promotional materials for the subtheme.

25. 7163: Republic Gunship

26. 7470: Space Shuttle Discovery-STS-31
Discovery. (Discovery License theme)
This theme was based on actual real-life space vehicles. We liked the Lunar Lander and the Mars Rover, but ultimately picked the Space Shuttle as iconic for the theme because it was the most popular of the sets and was used to promote the license.

27. 7257: Ultimate Lightsaber Duel
Star Wars Episode 3 - Rise of the Sith.
The final battle was what set this movie apart from the rest of the others. We chose this set to represent the subtheme, because, eventhough it was not a vehicle, its importance was so great even Lego honoured it with a set.

28. 7694: MT-31 Trike
Mars Mission.
The subtheme that relaunched Space in the new Millenium, we had a contentious time picking a set for this. Novelty wanted to pick the set designed by AFOLer Mark Sandlin (7692), but Biggy thinks the subtheme was mostly ground based vehicles and thus a ground vehicle will better represent the subtheme. This compact vehicle is proposed as the compromise, which was used extensively on Lego's promotional material, both online and offline. In addition, it has the new feature that defines the subtheme - a holding cell/prison for the aliens of the theme.

29. 7675: AT-TE Walker

Most of this movie was character driven. However, one of the best scenes was these huge AT-TE's crawling vertically up a sheer cliff and getting knocked off one by one, while the Jedi were jumping like locusts all over.

30. 5973: Hyperspeed Pursuit
Space Police 3.
It is still too early to pick a set for this subtheme. Tentatively, we picked this set because it had a nice balance between the good guys and the bad guys, although we reserve the right to change this in future. The set has shooting arrows, popping jail cell, chest of gold, nasty aliens, spiky spaceships, all the stuff that stands out in SP3.

31. 7593: Buzz's Star Command Spaceship
Toy Story
There was only one "space" set announced for Toy Story and Biggy was considering including this, but Novelty didn't really see the point - how could you have a subtheme with only 1 set? Well, Lego has announced 2 other space planes for the Toy Story theme. Those are small sets, but they aren't as awesome as this set, so this set gets our nod.
