Spotted! Set 3661 exclusive to Kmart (Australia)
Posted by jpmanalo, 30 Apr 2011 03:18. Filed under Shopping (Australia/NZ).
Set 3661 "Bank and Money Transfer" has appeared at Kmart stores with a price of 89.00 AUD. At this price, it might be worth waiting for one of the sales that Kmart has from time-to-time on LEGO sets.
From what I understand, Kmart will be the only Australian 'bricks-and-mortar' retailer to carry set 3661 on their shelves.

Alien Conquest & City Harbour sets available from TRU in the UK
Posted by bluemoose, 29 Apr 2011 12:05. Filed under Shopping (UK).
Popped into my local TRU this afternoon, after this morning's diversions, only to find all the regular (i.e. excluding the promo/30xxx series polybags) Alien Conquest & City Harbour sets on the shelf and available to buy. For reference, they weren't in the LEGO section, but in the 'featured items' area by the entrance. The visors in the Alien Conquest sets are clear and you do get a spare :-)

AFOLCON / The LEGO Show: this weekend!
Posted by Huw, 28 Apr 2011 10:00. Filed under Events (UK).
AFOLCON started today and The LEGO Show kicks off on Saturday. It's all happening in Manchester, UK, and if you're going, I know you're going to have a great time. Unfortunately due to family commitments I won't be there, which I am very disappointed about.I believe tickets for the public LEGO show on Saturday to Monday will be available on the door, so if you haven't already got them, don't worry, go along anyway, but I'd advise you to get there early (it opens at 10am) as it's bound to be popular.
Have fun, and when you've been let us know what you thought of it.

Eurobricks review links
Posted by Huw, 25 Apr 2011 15:24. Filed under Brickset.
Prompted by the addition yesterday of links to Eurobricks reviews of the PotC sets, Brickset member MERLego (Legolijntje on Eurobricks) has provided me with links to hundreds more reviews, including Technic, Pirates, Creator, Architecture and Indiana Jones. I've added them to the database and you'll see links to them when you browse set listings (example) or view a set's reviews. So, many thanks to him for doing that. If you'd like to see links to your favourite theme's reviews at Eurobricks, here's how you can do so:
Simply send me a list, in Excel (or CSV) containing the following:
Set number, Eurobricks thread number
So if the review for set 4181 is at http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=54306, I just need
4181, 54306As I've said before, Eurobricks is a great source of pictorial reviews but they can be a little hard to find. By adding links here we expose them to the benefit of both communities.

Pirates of the Caribbean: first impressions
Posted by Huw, 24 Apr 2011 15:26. Filed under New sets.
I've now built the four smallest PotC sets now so I thought I'd make a few observations about them. If you're still on the fence as to whether to buy them, maybe this will help :-)
- The packaging is excellent. As has been noted in various comments, the boxes are the new, smaller, type.
- The instructions and poster are packed in a plastic bag with a sheet of card to ensure they stay flat, even in the smallest sets.
- There are 27 unique minifigs, but it seems I was misled at the London toy fair: I was told that Jack Sparrow was different in every set, however according to BrickLink, there are just 4 variations, plus the one in 30132 which hasn't been added there yet. They are all excellent with many new accessories and headgear and are printed on the front and back of the torsoes.
- CapnRex101 has written some excellent reviews of two of the sets, and I've leveraged the new feature here to provide links to the pictorial Eurobricks reviews. You'll find them on the PotC theme page. What do you think of them? Add your own review, or comment here.

PotC now shipping from LEGOshop.com in the UK / TRU: what a palaver!
Posted by Huw, 21 Apr 2011 15:14. Filed under Shopping (UK).
All eight sets are available now, which is slightly earlier than I thought, to be honest.
That would be great news had TRU not been offering them in their 3-for-2 offer. It's not often that the release of a much anticipated range of sets coincides with an offer like that so I was determined to take full advantage of it. This morning I rang both Portsmouth and Southampton branches to see if they had put them out yet. Portsmouth said they hadn't so I went to So'ton (I live half way between the two). When I got there there were indeed plenty on the shelves. I intended to buy three of every set so as to maximise the 3-for-2 offer and effectively get 33% off the entire range. (In case you're wondering, one set is for me, one for DrDave and some of the others are for atkinsar: I'm not that greedy (or rich :-) ) )
So, I took three Queen Anne's Revenge and three Whitecap Bays to the till, all I could carry, and bought them. You have to be careful in TRU because their 3 for 2 offer is not intelligent. If you buy 3 £10 sets and 3 £5 sets in the same transaction you'd get two £5 sets free. Boots' (the high street chemist) system works properly in this regard but in TRU you have to get them rung through separately to guarantee getting one £10 and one £5 set free.
Anyway, I took them to the car and went back with a trolley to get 3 of each of the other six sets. Unfortunately they only had two Cannibal Escapes, so I made do with them and an extra Fountain of Youth. I though I might ask at the till if they had another Cannibal set, but in the end I didn't because when I got there the woman at the till saw how many sets I had and made a bit of a fuss, and called the manager. He was not available so who I assume was an assistant manager came over and started asking silly questions like why did I want so many of each and was I going to sell them.
I explained I was a maximising the discount available via the 3 for 2 offer and that one set of them was for a friend (which was true, DrD had asked me to get him some if possible). In the end she said she'd probably get into trouble but she let me have them. So, after another 6 till transactions (!) I managed to get all but one of the sets for 1/3rd off (and the cannibal one worked out at about 25% off) so I was happy.
Thus, what could have set me back £340 for the 8 sets only cost £229, which is still a ridiculous sum, but much better than full price!
If you have plans to do something similar, the offer only runs until Easter Monday and they'll be shut on Sunday. So get along soon!

Pirate of the Caribbean Sets Now Available at Target
Posted by yellowcastle, 21 Apr 2011 10:41. Filed under Shopping (USA).
All of the initial PotC sets except The Captain's Cabin (4191) are now available for order online at Target. Thus, it probably won't be too long before we start to seem them in stores. Additionally, they're listed at MSRP at Target while Toys R Us has already marked most of these sets up. Thanks to Brickset member vpustote for the news. Click here to buy.
Update: I found all the sets except for the Queen Anne's Revenge at our local Target last night. I'm pacing myself, though, so I only bought the Zombie Pirates. ;o)

Toys R Us Update: 2011 Sets
Posted by yellowcastle, 21 Apr 2011 09:13. Filed under Shopping (USA).
There's good news and bad news on the Toys R Us front.
THE GOOD NEWS: The Toys R Us website is now listing as "In Stock" several new City, Kingdoms, and Alien Conquest sets. This is great timing as we still have 3 days left on the current Buy One, Get One 50% Off sale and each of these themes is eligible. Additionally, the initial 7 Pirates of the Caribbean sets are also still available.
THE BAD NEWS: Unfortunately, the Alien Conquest Mothership (7065), City of Atlantis (7985), City Marina (4644), and Queen Anne's Revenge (4195) are still not available. Additionally, Toys R Us has just added their markup to all of the initial Pirates of the Caribbean sets. :o(
Thanks to Brickset members rotaylo and robsuckylife as well as Forum members typo and mkoesel for the news.

PotC in TRU already?
Posted by Huw, 19 Apr 2011 14:18. Filed under Shopping (UK).
burakki62 has commented in the article below that PotC sets are available in some TRU branches in the UK already. I'm mentioning it here as a separate article because dermott47 emailed to say that in his branch he saw them getting ready for a 3-for-2 offer which runs until the weekend after Easter.
If you find a branch with PotC sets AND that offer, do let us know!
Update: Mr_Le_Pook writes "Toys R' Us in Chester had shipping boxes of 'Pirates of the Carribean' Lego in the aisles this afternoon which had stickers saying 'Do not put on shelves until after April 15th'. I asked customer services if they were for sale and was told that they were.
"I took a 'Fountain of Life' set to the tills and was then told that they could not sell it yet. After a chat with the manager for clarification and several calls to head office I was allowed to buy the set for £19.99 (probably due to my disappointed looking son being with me).
"It seems there was some confusion across Europe about the actual release date, but the impression I was given was that the sets would be on the shelves and available for purchase tomorrow! The sets I saw were 'Fountain etc., The ship, London escape and The Fort'"

UCS Super Star Destroyer!
Posted by Huw, 12 Apr 2011 14:26. Filed under New sets.
Check out this monster! I'm a bit late breaking this story, but it's definitely worth mentioning. It's legit because the image came from LEGO.com, although I suspect it shouldn't be there, and we'll face the 'Spanish inquisition' from LEGO's community team again :-)
I wonder what price tag it will command?
Update: the source image at LEGO.com has been deleted. Expect me to be asked to remove it soon...

Australian sales news
Posted by jpmanalo, 06 Apr 2011 08:47. Filed under Shopping (Australia/NZ).
With the Easter school holiday period coming soon, it appears that Myer, Toys 'R' Us and Target are all running various promotions to get you to buy LEGO sets from their shelves in time for these holidays.
- Target is running a 20%-off sale from the 7th of April until the 13th of April. There are reports that they are carrying all of the new LEGO City Space sets (3365, 3366, 3367 and 3368).
- Myer apparently has "special introductory pricing" on the new City Space sets 3368 and 3367, listing them as "save $20.00 each".
- Toys 'R' Us is running a 20%-off sale on all LEGO apart from all Ninjago sets and all LEGO Games. This sale is from now until the 10th of April.
There is also print advertising showing that Big W is also carrying the new LEGO City Space sets.
Happy shopping folks!

HERO Recon site now live
Posted by Huw, 06 Apr 2011 06:08. Filed under LEGO.com.
We mentioned this a couple of weeks ago: HERO Recon is a 'Design By Me' for HERO Factory. It's now live and I've had a play. Basically you start with a HF 'skeleton' then put armour and weapons onto it using a Flash-based web interface. Once you're done you can save it and send it to your cart to buy it. The one I assembled came out at £9.99, which I didn't think was too bad. I don't know if the price varies depending on what you put on it: I suspect not.
Mission_zed who emailed us today about this said "At little disappointed, as only the 2.0 Hero parts/colours are available, plus the special two-tone chest piece. No villain parts or v1 Hero parts, the v1 arm cannons would have been useful. And the naming system is awful...."

New feature / New look
Posted by Huw, 06 Apr 2011 03:28. Filed under Brickset.
Now that Internet Explorer 9 is out, the time has come to be able to use the new features in CSS3 to add a few tweaks to the design of the site. If you're using IE9 or FireFox 4 and maybe some other browsers, you'll notice rounded boxes, drop shadows and so on in various places. You might also notice a slight speed increase because the markup sent to your browser is slightly smaller and the rounded corner images are no longer required.
If you notice anything that looks a bit strange, let me know and I'll fix it; I haven't tested every page in every browser. I may drop support for the image generated rounded corners in older browsers, and instead ensure the new ones work in as many browsers as possible (but not IE7/8 since they don't support CSS3 border-radius).
I've also added a cool new feature which was requested by DrDaveWatford. As you probably know, Eurobricks is a great source of pictorial reviews but as they can be a little tricky to find on the site, I've added direct links to them in the search results here, and also in the reviews tab on the set details page.
Although the means to display the links is ready, we haven't yet added all the data needed to generate the links. DrDave has provided data for Episode 1 and 2 Star Wars sets so you can see the feature in action on this results page - see the small Eurobricks log in the rating column. We'll be adding more data in the coming weeks. Thanks to Kim T from Eurobricks for allowing us to do this.

AFOLCON: Less than 4 weeks to go!
Posted by Huw, 04 Apr 2011 13:31. Filed under Events (UK).
Here's an update from the AFOLCON show team:With less than 4 weeks to go now until AFOLCON and the LEGO Show, the organising team have been able to publish the full agenda for the weekend - and it's a full one!
AFOLCON starts on Thursday 28th April, with a full day to register, setup and meet your fellow AFOLs. You'll receive your delegate bag on registration with a full 1kg of loose bricks and a few other things too! We'll also be setting up some very special MOCs for the weekend and don't be surprised if you see the press hanging around either ;-)
On the Friday, we've a packed day, full of exclusive sessions from speakers from all parts of the LEGO community. At the end of Friday, our Bricklink sellers will be opening up their stores to give AFOLCON attendees the first chance at the shopping! There'll be some great bargains and special discounts for AFOLCON attendees too. Remember, if you place a Bricklink order with MinifigforLife, Bricktivity or The Vault, you'll also get FREE shipping to AFOLCON.
On Saturday 30th April, we open to the public as 'The LEGO Show'. But before that, the LEGO Brand store on site will also open its doors early to AFOLCON attendees. Not only that, but every attendee will be eligible for a 10% discount on anything* in the LEGO store! Then we open to the public for the rest of the day.
Sunday is going to be a long day! The LEGO Brand store will be open again for an early shopping hour, why? Well that day will be the 1st May.... At the end of the day though, don't run away - we'll be running the AFOLCON auction. We've amazing bargains, hard to find items, money-can't-buy collectibles and much more. Check out www.facebook.com/afolcon for more pictures!
We wrap up the show on Bank Holiday Monday after hopefully an amazing weekend.
The show team have been working flat out to arrange some really special things for our first ever show. You might have seen us in the LEGO Club magazine or in the local Manchester press. Keep an eye out in the press for something extra special the week before the show. We've just been to see it and it's ever better than we thought possible! AFOLCON has just registered it's 75th AFOL attendee and The LEGO Show tickets are selling out fast. There is still time to register for AFOLCON or buy tickets for the public show though - full details are at www.afolcon.com and www.thelegoshow.com, just don't leave it until the last minute!
*10% discount is restricted to 1 (one) of each large item subject to stock levels. Pre-ordering is not available. At LEGO store manager's discretion.

Announcing the Brickset discussion forum... yes, really!
Posted by Huw, 02 Apr 2011 10:52. Filed under Brickset.
As announced yesterday, April 1st, the Brickset discussion forum is now live! (What do you mean, you thought it was an April Fool?)
Yes, it's true, one of the most requested features in our annual user survey is a discussion forum and now, at last, I have decided to implement one.
However, there's good news and bad:
- The good news is that the forum is for over 16s only. This will ensure that discussions are mature and worthwhile, and it won't become full of flashing avatars and questions about 'which theme do you like the best?' and 'if you had $20 to spend which set would you buy?'
- The bad news is that the forum is for over 16s only. I'm really sorry if this age limit precludes you from participating but I feel I have to keep the age limit high in order to maintain a high quality of discussion and to keep the moderating effort low. If you are under 16 you are welcome to read the forum but, please, do not join. If the moderators suspect that you are under 16 we will delete your forum account.
Click on the Forum link above and read the notes, confirm that you have done so and then a link to the forum will be available. (you'll only have to do this once).
You can blame yellowcastle for the double-bluff April Fool, it was his idea :-)
I look forward to seeing AFOLs and older TFOLs in there!

Yet more new promotional sets on the way
Posted by Huw, 02 Apr 2011 08:26. Filed under Brickset.
This morning's trawl of the LEGO.com instructions area revealed three new promotional sets: two Harry Potter (30110 and 30111) and a BrickMaster Star Wars set, left.
Around 30 new instructions were added: you can see the whole list here. They include the Maersk train and Farnsworth House.

Announcing the Brickset discussion forum

One of the most requested features in our annual user survey is a discussion forum: Well, now, at last, I have decided to implement one.
You'll see a new tab in the menu above ready for its launch, which will probably be on the 2nd or 3rd of April, if everything goes to plan, today, the 1st.
Check back over the weekend for more news...

Maersk train now at shop.LEGO.com
Posted by Huw, 01 Apr 2011 02:48. Filed under LEGO.com.
The set we've all been eagerly waiting for can now be ordered, despite earlier indications that its availability had slipped a couple of weeks.
So get it while it's hot -- and before its shipping date slips:
- Buy now from shop.LEGO.com in the UK
- Buy now from shop.LEGO.com in the USA
