Posted by Huw, 30 Apr 2013 11:02. Filed under Events (Europe).
I've just been told about another LEGO event going on this weekend: MADbrick, in Madrid, Spain, which has this rather splendid advertising graphic. It's organised by the cultural association ALE! (Cultural Association of Amateur LEGO constructions of Spain).
As in previous years, MADbrick is a themed event, in which all exhibitors are coordinated so that their work revolves around one central theme, which this time will be the human evolution.
We have gifts for visitors, exhibitors contests, free construction workshop for the children and so on.More information can be found on the ALEBricks website.

Two AFOL events in France this May
Posted by Littlebricks, 22 Apr 2013 10:43. Filed under Events (Europe).
If you are in France in May, it will be worth visiting these two AFOL events:
- The first, 4/5 May, is in Mennecy on the outskirts of Paris, organised by Festibriques.
- The second one, a week later at Mulsanne on the outskirts of Le Man, organised by Freelug.
Since I moved to France over six years ago, the number of new LUGs and events has increased enormously as the fan base for LEGO grows. They are always looking for international groups to exhibit with them, so if you are interested, please contact me via my profile.

LEGO World Copenhagen report, part 3
Posted by Huw, 20 Feb 2013 04:37. Filed under Events (Europe).
In this final part of my LEGO World report, I'll cover the Fan Zone and other aspects of the show. The fan zone was managed by Svend Erik of Byggepladen, the Danish LUG, who I had the pleasure to meet and who was a great guy. It was housed in a massive annexe to the main hall that was about half the size of the main hall at the STEAM museum at Swindon where GWLS is held. Large though it was, looking at the map in the programme, it accounts for less than 10% of the total floor area of the show.
Most of the exhibitors were Danish or Swedish but I also met Norwegians, Germans, Irish and even Warren from Edinburgh who was there with his microscale Olympic park.

LEGO World Copenhagen report, part 2
Posted by Huw, 19 Feb 2013 03:59. Filed under Events (Europe).
Yesterday, in part 1 of my report, I described the LEGO Production area of the show. Today I'll cover some of the other displays and activities provided by LEGO, as opposed to AFOLs (which I'll cover tomorrow). I could be here until next week describing it all, so I'll just mention some of things I found most interesting. The main hall was divided into about 20 zones, each of which featured some sort of display or activity, usually correlating to a LEGO theme, for example Chima, Friends, Star Wars and Mindstorms.
In most cases, part of each zone was used to showcase the current products in the theme and for large display models, but most of the space in each was a building area, either on tables, in a pit or just on the floor. The vast quantity of bricks in them was mind-boggling.

LEGO World Copenhagen report, part 1
Posted by Huw, 18 Feb 2013 04:43. Filed under Events (Europe).
The fifth LEGO World to be held in Copenhagen has just ended. As you know I was there for two of the four days so I'm going to write a series of reports about the show which I'm hoping will persuade you to visit it yourself next year :-)First, some basic information about the event. It's held in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, at the Bella Center, which is a couple of miles from the city centre, and a couple of miles from the airport. It's on the city's metro system so is easy to get to. The Bella Sky hotel is next door and there's a Danhostel within walking distance, which provides budget accommodation.
It's unique among LEGO shows in that it's actually organised by the LEGO company, their Danish regional office. (LEGO participates in other events, like LEGO World in the Netherlands, but they are organised by clubs or other companies) This obviously means that they have a large presence, and indeed fill a massive hall with displays and activities.
Byggepladen, the Danish LUG, work with LEGO and coordinate the 'Fan Zone' hall, in which AFOLs from around Europe display their models.
I'll write the report in three sections: this first one will cover one aspect of the LEGO display: the production area. The other two will cover the other LEGO company areas and the fan zone.
Acknowledgement: Some of the photos in this report are courtesy of Chris, wiredforsound, whom I met at the show. Photography in the production area was difficult as it was always very crowded.

LEGO World Copenhagen, 14-17th February
Posted by Huw, 28 Jan 2013 15:16. Filed under Events (Europe).
LEGO World in Copenhagen is one of the largest events on the LEGO fan calendar. This year it's running from the 14th to the 17th of February.I've never been to it, in fact I've never been to an event outside the UK, but this year I'll be there; I've just booked my flights and I'm all sorted.
I don't know a lot about it, but from what I've read, the AFOL-contributed displays are just one aspect of the event, so I'm very much looking forward to visiting and seeing it all for myself.
I'll be arriving late on Wednesday and will be leaving on Saturday morning. It would be great to meet up with other Bricksetters whilst I'm there, so if you're going too, get in touch so we can arrange something.

Latest news from the AFOLCON organisers
Posted by Huw, 01 Feb 2012 05:15. Filed under Events (Europe).
The team over at AFOLCON are pleased to announce a whole raft of LEGO speakers for this year's convention!Joining the already announced LEGOLAND master builder and LEGO Certified Professional, are Mark Stafford (LEGO Ninjago designer), Adam Vaugn (LEGO Friends designer) and Bjarke Schonwandt (Senior Manager, Consumer Perceived quality).
We're very happy to have Mark return for his second year presenting at AFOLCON. Last year he brought with him a whole host of test models that were used in the production process, and he's promised the same this year!
Adam will be giving his first AFOLCON session looking at the development of the new LEGO Friends line. Years in development, he'll be explaining how LEGO Friends is designed to welcome a wider audience to the LEGO family.
Finally, Bjarke will give you an exclusive insight into how LEGO manages the quality of the LEGO sets and elements. How do LEGO track what is good and what is bad? Most importantly, Bjarke is asking you to bring along any samples you have of what is not acceptable - the challenge has been set!
We still have a few more speakers to announce for AFOLCON 2012, not least our Keynote speaker -- more details on that soon, as well as details of our auction. We've just come back from Billund actually, with all manner of goodies. There'll be more details soon, but we will say this. It's *good* !
Once again, the organisers have offered Brickset visitors a 20% discount on the normal AFOLCON ticket price of £60. All you have to do is quote the code BRICKSET20 when you check out. This is a limited offer so order now to guarantee your discount!
If you have any questions about AFOLCON or The LEGO Show, you can ask in the forum where Warren will be on hand to answer them.
AFOLCON runs on the 3rd and 4th May 2012 and is open to anyone over the age of 16 (16-18yr olds must be accompanied). Tickets cost £60 and include all session, an out-of-hours visit to the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre and a goodie bag which includes 1Kg of LEGO. For more details, go to www.afolcon.com.
The LEGO Show is open to the public on the 5th, 6th and 7th May. Tickets cost just £29 for a family of four when booked online, saving you the queue and 20%. For more details, go to www.thelegoshow.com.

"We're also soon be announcing the LEGO Designers that will be present at the show. AFOLCON attendees will again have a unique chance to listen and talk to LEGO Designers about how the products are developed.
