Pirates of the Caribbean minifig gallery is now complete
Posted by Huw, 30 May 2011 09:45. Filed under Brickset.
I had a chance to complete the PotC gallery today (it's a public holiday in the UK and drizzling outside...), so all 28 minfigs are now present and correct.I liked SapmiSatan's suggestions for categories in this article, so I've used them.

Brick Calendar
Posted by Huw, 29 May 2011 04:32. Filed under New sets.
Check out this neat Brick-built calendar that's been reviewed on Eurobricks which features two series 1 minifigs and which is presumably going to be available in brand stores.
One thing the review doesn't point out is whether it's been manufacured by LEGO or by their their Chinese outsource partner, Broadway. I suspect that, given it has collectable figs in it, it will be the latter, like the similar 'Countdown Candle'.

This year's Christmas special is a Post Office
Posted by Huw, 29 May 2011 04:22. Filed under Brickset.
This is slighly old news but peter1975 reminded me yesterday that the next in the Christmas toy shop / bakery series will be a post office. No details or photos have emerged yet, but it's listed on a Dutch toy shop's website, and if like the others, it's a Jamie Berard design, it's sure to be excellent.

Cars 2 checklist
Posted by Huw, 29 May 2011 04:16. Filed under New sets.
Now that Cars 2 sets are available in most places now, if you're collecting them you might be interested in these excellent checklists that show every character and what sets they come in.I originally thought someone has created these, but apparently they come in the sets.
I had vowed not to buy Cars sets, but having seen these lists, plus the fact they are now in TRU and Argos in the UK, I might just change my mind...

Here's another new promo polybag set that's just been revealed on LEGO's customer service instruction portal. They've added instructions for many of the Cars sets, which you'll find listed on our latest instructions page.
I guess this one will be free with The Sun later in the year...

Update to PotC minifig gallery
Posted by Huw, 24 May 2011 16:17. Filed under Brickset.
Thanks to forum member nexhex I now have a Voodoo Doll Jack Sparrow fig, so he, and a couple of other figs, are now in the PotC gallery. Sorry it's taking longer than I anticipated to get this completed. You notice that, as well as his head, his torso and legs are also different to those on the other Jack Sparrows. His head is tan which is a pretty rare colour for head. The Tusken Raiders had tan heads but apart from them, has there been any others?

More new stuff in UK shops
Posted by Huw, 23 May 2011 17:32. Filed under Shopping (UK).
News from the forum and from various people that have emailed us is that six of the Cars 2 sets can be ordered now from Tesco Direct.
And, if you still have any money left after buying that lot, the three Harry Potter sets have showed up in John Lewis shops, although they are not yet available online. You can, however, pre-order them from LEGO.com, for shipping on 15th June.
UPDATE: The UK LEGO Brand Stores received their first shipment of Cars 2 Duplo & 'system' sets today, for immediate on-shelf availablity!

Heroica hitting shelves
Posted by bluemoose, 20 May 2011 18:08. Filed under Shopping (USA).
We've been getting reports that the new Heroica Games have been spotted on the shelf in US Toys R Us. This is an interesting take on the LEGO games genre, a modular game system that you can extend by buying extra sets ... applying the modular ethos of LEGO to a range of games. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Heroica and giving it a go. If it's any good, I can see it being heavily extended by the community and becoming a mainstay of AFOL events :-)
Thanks to georgebjones and others who let us know.

Harry Potter, Years 5-7, the Video Game
Posted by bluemoose, 20 May 2011 17:43. Filed under Software/Games.
As we've said lots of times, Brickset is all about the sets; we include some other LEGO products, but they aren't a priority for us in the Database. We've been getting quite a few emails about this one, so just for a little peace and quiet ... ;-)
It's being reported on Joystiq and other sites, that a new LEGO Harry Potter game will be out later this year, LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7. My guess is that the release will be timed to coincide with the DVD/BluRay release date, right in time for the important Christmas sales season.

Summer 2011 sets start to arrive in UK Brand Stores
Posted by bluemoose, 20 May 2011 11:38. Filed under Shopping (UK).
The Summer 2011 sets are starting to arrive in the UK LEGO Brand Stores.
This week saw the arrival in-store of the 'Alien Conquest' sets (including the battlepack), the 'City Harbour' sets, Creator Lighthouse & Hillside House sets, new 'Castle' sets, the architecture-series 'Burj Khalifa-Dubai', as well as new Duplo sets. I don't think the new Technic sets have arrived yet.
Not surprisingly, no sign of the new Star Wars sets yet; they are expected in a couple of weeks time. No Cars sets yet either.

May public survey
Posted by bluemoose, 20 May 2011 09:21. Filed under Miscellaneous.
The Community Engagement & Communication team have asked us to share the May 2011 Public Survey with our members, so please take a moment to fill out the latest survey & let them know what you think ...
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LEGO_AFOL_MAY
There are a couple of issues with the wording & functionality (particularly on the "How would you rate your satisfaction with the following ..." page, which won't let you select the same response for different questions, so be aware), but please do your best to fill it out.
Some feedback from the CEC team about the last survey -
"In the last survey, we found the following results:
- We found a regional difference in our ratings as the rating in US/Canada are higher than in EU and Asia
- The results show that many don’t feel like sharing information with others about the hobby as those that are interested in the hobby are already in the hobby
- Quality and customer service were given high marks by the respondents
- Only half the respondents noted that they belong to a LUG"

Latest LEGO Inside Tour exclusive
Posted by Huw, 19 May 2011 02:47. Filed under New sets.
I've written about the Inside Tours before and as you may recall attendees are presented with an exclusive model at the end of them. The first tour of 2011 has just taken place and Brickset member torviag attended.
I haven't been very impressed with the previous models but this one, of old and new moulding machines, is absolutely fantastic, and with just 68 made will surely become one of the most sought after and rare models ever.

Want to find out how I take the minifig photos?
Posted by Huw, 18 May 2011 14:44. Filed under Brickset.
Loads of you have asked, so I've documented my methods: the equipment I use, how the photos are taken and the post-processing steps.Read it all in my minifig photography guide. I hope you can make use of some of the techniques to improve your own photos.
(Thanks to bluemoose for putting me on the right track with my post-processing and rocao for proof reading the article, however if there are still grammatical errors or typos they are all mine...)

Free LEGO offer extended by 2 days
Posted by Huw, 18 May 2011 03:19. Filed under Shopping (UK).
As you may have read in the forum, it seems that The Sun's free LEGO offer is being extended into this weekend, with this AT-ST available on Saturday and 30090, Pharaoh's Quest aeroplane on Sunday. This is great news, but it's rather strange why its been extended like this: some have said that they wanted to see 'how successful' it was first. I think the promotion's success is in no doubt from what I've witnessed...
Atkinsar has updated his bricklist to show these additions.

Alien Conquest battle pack coming soon
Posted by Huw, 17 May 2011 11:46. Filed under New sets.
Eagle-eyed member Jarod98 found this 5 minifigure battle pack in the online LEGO catalogue, on page 37. It's not yet listed at shop.LEGO.com but the catalogue says it'll be $14.99 and available on June 1st.
It looks like a great 'army builder', if a little pricey, however -- I hope I'm wrong -- but I suspect it'll consist primarily of 'components made in China' like other battle packs which unfortunately will mean it won't be on my shopping list :-(

Pirates of the Caribbean minifig gallery takes shape...
Posted by Huw, 15 May 2011 17:41. Filed under Brickset.
In celebration of the release of Jack in his boat (30131) today, I've started work on the PotC minifig gallery!I've added the four variants of Jack Sparrow (Voodoo doll one to follow) and will be drip-feeding the other characters over the next few days. I'm going to photograph front and back this time, so it'll take a little longer.
I hope you like 'em!

Scrum to grab News Of The Worlds today
Posted by Huw, 15 May 2011 06:56. Filed under Shopping (UK).
Today's free set is perhaps the best of the bunch so I made the effort to get to WHS early today. As it was a nice morning I thought I'd cycle there (10km, half cross-country) and get there in good time for 10am (for those of you not in the UK, most shops are only allowed to be open for 6 hours on a Sunday and open 10am-4pm).
I arrived at 9:45 only to see a queue about 30 people long outside the shop! By time I'd chained my bike and got to the queue it was about 50 people long. I'm sure WHS isn't used to this on a Sunday morning!
Once the doors opened, well, I've never seen anything like it in a WHS! People were grabbing armfuls of the paper, handing them out to others then rushing to the queue for the till. I grabbed 4, paid, got my sets, then put the papers back on the pile. I didn't actually want to read the rag!
15 minutes later I returned only to find the shop was back to what you'd expect on a Sunday morning and of course there were still boxes of sets and a huge stack of NotWs left, so it was all a bit unnecessary. I couldn't resist getting a couple more, though...
Like others who have commented here, I can't condone buying 'hundreds' to sell on eBay but grabbing a few extra to trade is perfectly acceptable in my book.

Update to the Space minifig gallery
Posted by Huw, 14 May 2011 16:54. Filed under Brickset.
It's been a while since I added any new images to the minfig gallery. I'll be adding PotC and Alien Conquest in the next week or so, but today, as a warmup to tackling those and to check my equipment and processes, I've added five images of the original classic space figures to the Space minifig gallery.
I am indebted to legoloverman for lending me his best minfigs to photograph as I don't actually own them myself. Thanks Pete! :-)

Free LEGO with The Sun today
Posted by Huw, 14 May 2011 05:19. Filed under Shopping (UK).
Just in case you haven't heard, there's good news and bad:
The goods news is that there's free LEGO with The Sun newspaper this week! The bad news is that there's no voucher redeem offer which means you have to collect the set in WHS or TRU on the day. This is extremely inconvenient for me given I'm 5 miles from the nearest WHS and go nowhere near one on my way to work. My local WHS said they got 4 boxes in today and expect them all to go by lunchtime.
Today it's this mini X-Wing. Find out what's coming later in the week on atkinsar's BrickList.

PotC and Duplo Cars sets at Target stores (Australia)
Posted by jpmanalo, 08 May 2011 06:08. Filed under Shopping (Australia/NZ).
Several people have reported seeing new sets from the Pirates of the Carribean range and the Duplo Cars range on shelves at Target stores.
Prices at Target are currently at LEGO Australia's RRP, so it is still much cheaper to source these sets from the US - if you can find them online! Apparently, Australian customers who placed orders with Barnes & Noble for LEGO PotC sets recently have all had their orders cancelled, due to "no stock available".
Thank you to Brickset members shokwave2 and Dr. Rod and also toDinkums-Dazza (via Facebook) for your information.
Edit: Just in the mail today, and also as noted by Brickset member, TinyTurbosCityAndToyStory, was a catalogue from Big W advertising that they are now carrying the new Cars (non-Duplo) sets also. More details in the comments.

Free PotC set in the News of the World next week
Posted by Huw, 07 May 2011 10:14. Filed under Shopping (UK).
Markey reports that "there will be a free LEGO promo set in next week's News of the World newspaper. I saw an ad in The Sun today. The set is 30131, 'Captain Jack Sparrow's boat'. Tomorrow, they'll have PotC sticker book and stickers."
It's bad enough having to buy The Mirror to get free LEGO but the NotW? We'll have to put bags on our heads when we go to the till to avoid the shame of it :-)No word as to whether it comes with the paper or whether you collect it from somehere. I rather think it'll be the former given the thickness of most Sunday papers, that are often plastic wrapped. Let's hope so. You really will get some funny looks taking an armful of copies to the till, though :-)
Update: there's more! There'll be a total of seven sets to collect in The Sun and the NotW starting on 14th May, next Saturday.
- 30051 - Mini X-Wing
- 30131 - Jack Sparrow in Boat
- 30130- Mini Black Pearl
- 30080 - Ninja Glider
- 30081 - Skeleton Chopper
- 30083 - Dragon Fight
- 30091 - Car
See http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/free-lego-now-with-sun/934151. Unfortunately it's collect at WHS and TRU, not with the paper :-( Thanks to Hob and atkinsar for this extra info.

30%-off at Games Empire (Australian online store)
Posted by jpmanalo, 06 May 2011 21:23. Filed under Shopping (Australia/NZ).
Games Empire is an independent toy store in Australia, and at the moment they are running a 30%-off sale on all LEGO items. They have in stock many sets that the larger retailers, like Big-W, Target and K-Mart, have already stopped selling.
Unlike other online retailers, I have found their prices to be consistent with LEGO Australia's RRP, so this 30%-off sale does have some genuine savings when compared to other Australian retailers.
Happy shopping folks!

The Master Builder Academy (MBA) is now up for pre-order on the US LEGO Shop on-line site.
There are two options available at the moment -
- MBA Kit #1 is available to order at US $29.99
- MBA Kit #2-#6 is available as a subscription for US $69.99No confirmed dates, but we believe Kit #1 will ship later this month (May) and, if you take up the subscription, the other sets will follow at roughly two monthly intervals (i.e. Kit #2 in July, Kit #3 in September, etc.)
