Traffic review of the year

  • Traffic review of the year

Posted by Huw, 19 Dec 2010 14:37. Filed under Brickset.

It's about the time of year when I traditionally review the level of traffic over the past year and compare it with previous years. (If you're interested, you can read the 2008 and 2009 news articles). I'm usually prompted to do so by the Brothers-Brick who celebrate their birthday right about now but I haven't seen them post about it yet, so this year I've beat them to it :-)

Anyway, once again, this year we've seen a huge increase in traffic, of about 75%! I usually publish figures from the SmarterStats analytics package that my server provider uses, but as you may remember the site was moved to its own virtual server in the summer and as a result of that I don't have a complete set of figures for the year.

However I do have figures from Google Analytics for 2009 and 2010, so the numbers below for 2009 will differ from those in the 2009 review because they've been gathered by a different method and in many ways reflect more accurately actual traffic levels because the SmarterStats figures include stylesheets, graphics, RSS feeds and so on. More importantly, they can be compared with the 2010 figures to show the increase:

     Google Analytics figures 2010 2009
    Page views 40,447,000 25,434,000
    Visits 7,926,000 4,556,000
    Visitors 2,719,000 1,766,000

That's over forty million page views, or just over 1 view per second on average which, when you look at it like that doesn't actually sound much, does it!

Don't forget, if you're interested in web stats (and I seem to be obsessed with them :) ) you can access the publicly available Quantcast figures on the Statistics page.

So, here's to another 75% growth in 2011! But before that I'll post a review of the year at the end of the month and just after Christmas I'm planning to launch some major new features to the site, so make sure you stay tuned!

Sorry to break it to you but...the high page views is probably due to my increased boredom this year, and clicking the link to this page every five minutes. XD

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 19 Dec 2010 15:14

^ Well, thank you for contributing to them :-)

Posted by shieldsy in Ireland, 19 Dec 2010 15:48

Any word on reviews, last year there were far less than '08

@vezon- Me too! Brickset is my internet homepage, so that helps too. :) Brickset is so awesome! Thanks for another great year, Huw!

Posted by cjg in United States, 19 Dec 2010 16:15

@Pepper: Brickset is also my homepage, and I'm on the internet a lot, which means I go to brickset a lot!

Posted by roddz in Philippines, 19 Dec 2010 16:27

Wow, that's a lot! Oh, and yeah, visiting this site for at least 8 to 10 times a day has become a habit of mine lately. It's just that AWESOME!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 19 Dec 2010 16:34

Woah. That's a LOT! I'm REALLY looking forward to these new features! Any... hints? :)

Congrats Huw to those figures! Well deserved. Brickset is just a super site!

Posted by voyanui8768 in United Kingdom, 19 Dec 2010 17:11

My homepage too! I always check up on the latest news before some more internet searching!

@Legobagel: I did! We had to watch 3 hours until we got to Lego, but it was a good programme - brought back lots of memories :D

Great job Huw, a really good year and a really great website. Would be my homepage too if I had a choice, but my wife's not a keen Lego fan unfortunately.... =(

Posted by PaulTR in United States, 19 Dec 2010 18:39

Sweet! Brickset is a huge part of my life: I wake up, chug some milk, and then immediately hit Brickset! I wish they could make a Verizon/Yahoo/Brickset homepage; that would be crazy cool!

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 19 Dec 2010 18:53

Congratulations, Huw - the success of the site reflects the love and attention that you lavish on it, and it's richly deserved !

Here's to further success in 2011.

Super achievement!!! I love this site, however, there can be improvements. Updates to piece count, minifigs, and retail price are a few I can think of. I know you are busy along with other mods but keeping up-to-date with the database is a must....like myself. Nonetheless, congrats on a great year and many more to come!!!

Congrats Huw to another great year! I'm really looking ofrward to 2011, for 2 reasons:
1. New Brickset features!
2. NEW LEGO sets!
Have a very Happy Holidays Huw!

EDIT: Hey Huw, what 2011 sets and themes do YOU want to own? Just curious. Thanks.

About 1,000,00 page views, and 10,000 visits come from me, Brickset is my life (and that thing, Lego, is second in my life). Like a lot of people Brickset is my homepage, and refering to PaulTR's comment I want a Verizon/Yahoo/Brickset homepage minus Verizon and Yahoo. I check Brickset about 10-15 times a day and view about 20-50 pages unless I'm grounded or sick (but I usually get on Brickset anyway). I can't wait for the new years, can't wait to see those updates!!!

Happy holidays, hoping you'll see lots of boxes of Legos under your tree!

To Huw, all the other mods, and all the members hear at Brickset! :o)

P.S. It would be nice if you made an "About Us" page and list everyone who works for Brickset and what they do, that way we can give recognition to those who deserve it.

P.P.S. If you get a chance shake everything under the tree to know what's Legos and what's not.

Just shows how important you guys are to the community! Great job and congrats! And I second the notion about the "About Us" page Jarod brought up!

I like this site better than Lego's site to be honest! Your activity seems to peak this time of year, which may be due to a number of factors:

1) Christmas shopping (what's out there, and the cheapest place to purchase it)
2) New releases from Lego
3) Lego's annual sales on black Friday
4) Info on sales from other locations
5) Seems like Lego discontinues more items this time of year, and it's the last time to buy before the prices skyrocket (one of my favorite pages from Brickset)
6) Nice repository for instructions (should one need them when building sets for the kids or me)

I have saved a TON of money this year thanks to you guys, and do come here often. I love the statistics pages as well (Data Mining is really neat).

Anyway, thanks again and have a blessed Christmas and happy new year!

Wow, I remember when this site had such a small community it would normally take hours before anyone responded to a news thread.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 20 Dec 2010 03:45

^ Yes, it is a busy time of year. In November and December the site's traffic rockets, as you can see from the Quantcast stats, so I try and keep the number of changes I make to the actual site to a minimum, to keep it stable.

However trying to keep up with all the sales and offers and also the appearance of new sets in the shops and new images online can be a challenge, and I am grateful for the help of bluemoose and yellowcastle in doing this.

The changes I have planned for next week are the result of 2 months of tinkering on my local development copy of the site, and they address many of the issues raised in the user survey. I won't say more than that just now....

I like the idea of a 'about us' page. I think we used to have one, I'll try and get it reinstated.

What are the new features? I can't wait!

Posted by mbolego in United States, 20 Dec 2010 09:18

Congrats - that is amazing - but I understand why (you have a fantastic site!)...

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 20 Dec 2010 09:40

This year was great! I can't believe it went up 75%! Let's make 2011 even better! :D

@legobob Have a look at this... *EvilgeniusHAHAHA*

Oh, and I have brickset as my homepage, so that probably added a few views to the count. Not that that'd make much difference, but it may have given an extra 50 or so. ^^

Well done Brickset!

Congrats to Huw and the mods! Great site and am looking forward to finding out more about you guys from the 'About' page. (^_^)

Posted by Scoutjo5 in Canada, 20 Dec 2010 12:52

Congratulations Huw!!! I never realised how popular your website was. Keep up the good work!! :)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 20 Dec 2010 14:14

^^^ The 'Advanced Collection Manager' is not one of the updates, I'm still thinking about how best to implement that without cluttering and confusing the interface.

And to all of you that have Brickset as your homepage, I'm humbled :-) Even I don't have it set as mine!

Posted by gjamesaustin2000 in United States, 21 Dec 2010 15:47

I Actualy go on brick set 10 times a minute.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 23 Dec 2010 19:00

^ Scary.
^^*Gasp* HUW! :) BTW, I also have Brickset as my homepage.
