    It appears Toys R Us is extending their current Buy One, Get One 50% Off promotion to all LEGO sets except Pharaoh's Quest this Tuesday (12/21/10) and Wednesday (12/22/10).  The email is a bit vague but doesn't say anything about this being In-Store only so be sure to check on-line in the morning.  I just got back from my local TRU and was very excited to find the new V-Wing, Jedi Shuttle, Bounty Hunter, and Gungan sets so I will definitely be visiting tomorrow!

Set-wise, it probably is, since you can get [most of] 2011 sets for MSRP before the TRU markup

Price-wise.......I'd say B2G1F sales are better.

Considering it only says excluding Pharaoh's Quest, does this mean the sale also applies to CMF's?
@Unknown User 2596: It seems many other sets are on sale as well, such as the AAT tank and Lotso's dump truck.

In theory, it should apply to nearly everything. Interestingly, many of the Lego Direct sets are already out of stock online...

@AZFIREWOLF: I am in IL, and have not heard of them doing a B2G1F sale at teh TRUS around here, but I may go tomorrow since they should theorectically have the Minfigs on sale again for BOGO50??? Unless they 'run out' (that is hide them in the back) until the sale is over like they did last week.
I mean I understand TRU appears to be clearing out their inventory in prep for 2011 sets, but It seems like they are listing sales like this when noting is in stock, at the store (or they hide the cherry sets, like the cargo trains) OR online...

The only down side is that Battle packs are $16, Slave 1 is $90 and the Clone Turbo Tank is $140 at my locale TRU. You still save but really TRU, did you have to jack the prices. The locale one also has no 2011 sets.

The good news is that the sale is valid both online and instore and there are definitely some great deals to be had. The bad news is that most of the direct or 2011 sets are already out of stock online. But the deal covers everything from the Lego branded table to the collectible minfigures so this is a great chance for good deals on last minute presents!

well my store has not received any new star wars of the 2011 sets. so thats a bummer for this sale, they are proably holding them back till after the sales to make more money

I also got the email about being open 24 hours. I suggest going Lego shopping in the middle of the night when they get a truck in, they typically restock over night. You should be able to find a lot of things they are normally out of, like Harry Potter.

@Yellowcastle: I think the best sale ever at TRU would have been about 2 years ago at their last Buy two get one free sale occurred before they started astronomically raising their prices every time there is a whiff of a sale (coincidentally that is probably around the time FAO bought them)

It is utterly ridiculous how blatent TRU is with this scam of theirs.. the sad thing is people are falling for it.
I mean their latest 'sale' online was so bad that after the mark ups, shipping, and tax were taken into account the TRU sale BOGO50 'discount' went from saving 25% on each item to saving about 3% on each item... That is for whatever they had left in stock online...
TRU is fast becoming a joke and it is sad.. their staff stinks, their stock selection is horrible at times, OR they are hiding it in the back (which I wonder if it can be proven and how the BBB would like to hear about that), and they are boosting prices to a ridiculous level... 140 for a clone tank????
People REALLY need to start hitting the BBB website to reports their acts and see if they are violations.

I mean I am lucky, I am near a Lego Store... if I ever want Lego I can go there. But other people simply do not have that as an option. This stinks because I liked TRU for the sales (especially Buy two get the third free sales... even which their gouging they have not started that with the more expensive sets, like Fire Brigade, or the pirate ship, etc. (unless SW).. at least they have not done so YET.
But this price increasing, especially before sales, and talk of hiding merchandise should be reported if people are seeing evidence of it.

madforlegos - yeah well the problem is parents still by their lego. You should stand outside a Canadian TRU and see what people walk out of the store with. Just shop at Walmart.com, I saw their online price for the turbotank go as low as $79.00! They don't stock everything all the time but they have daily updates in prices and shipping is free to local store and cheap/free to home.

The online part of the sale sucks because shipping isn't free! That'll be like an extra $15... aren't we trying to save our money?!

@Ypres: I think Walmart is fast becoming the next 'TRU' in terms of good Lego selection and good prices (including the 1 shipping and the ship to store).. It really is frustrating to see TRU constantly shoot themselves in the foot isn't it though? I mean you think they would have learned by now that they have to ensure that they do not get driven out of business by Walmart or Amazon.com....

@madforlegos - I agree that the recent price hikes are pretty frustrating. But I guess I am generally willing to withstand a 10% price hike (on average) if they continue to offer these kinds of sales on a frequent basis. While we all know we're not saving 25%, we are still saving. And if this is how they feel they need to do business in order to survive, then that's ultimately their prerogative. And I would rather have Toys R Us as a buying option then not have them at all. Independent toy shops have been doing this (and worse) for years and no one ever complains. The market has simply changed and Target / Walmart / and Amazon are now usually the retail destinations of choice for our Lego needs. :o)

What it means to us savvy buyers is that TRU won't be getting as much of our business anymore. There are definitely some good deals to be had. $110 each for the police station or pyramid is really high. But together during the last BOGO50% sale, you ended up paying only $165 for $200 worth of sets with another $16.50 coming back to you in the new year as Rewards Bucks. But I've been eyeing Hogwarts for a bit and had a chance to get it with their 25% Off coupon. Unfortunately, they had marked it up to $150 (If I recall correctly) and the savings would have just evaporated.

I just got back from TRU on my lunch break and happily picked up both the V Wing Fighter and Naboo sets (10 Droids!!!). At MSRP, I would have paid $45 for the 2 sets. Today, I paid $38.50. So, TRU ate up what should have been an extra $3.50 in savings but I still saved almost $7 AND I got 2 brand new just released sets. Additionally, I should be getting back $3.85 in Reward Bucks though I'm concerned I may soon be bumping up against whatever rebate ceiling TRU has set for this Rewards promotion ($50?). On a related note, I also picked up 2 Traveller sets which are currently Half Off ($2.25/each). And unfortunately, they didn't stack together with the BOGO50% Off at checkout. But they're pretty neat, great at $2.25, and already discontinued so...

I'm waiting for some state Department of Consumer Protection to go after Toys R Us for their illegal practice of raising prices prior to their 'sales.' As I recall, Kohls Department Stores got in some trouble for doing just that a few years back. If enough people in a state file a complaint, they will investigate.

Having watched LEGO prices go up just before a sale only to drop back down just after a sale, I know for a fact that they do that. What they don't do is intentionally hide things in the back (with the rare exception of things like Zhu Zhu pets and Wii where they would tell a customer on Saturday night they were out of stock, but then magically have inventory Sunday morning because it was advertised in the newspaper).

What they have is a horrible inventory and stocking system. The other day I was looking for a present for a niece, and didn't see any of the item on the shelf. Asked an associate who found a case of the item in the back. In this case, it was never stocked because at some point they were out of the item, so they filled the shelf space with something else. When the item came back in stock, there wasn't a spot for it so it wasn't put on the sales floor. This happens a lot! So if you don't see an item, have an associate check the computer. If they have it in back they'll get it for you, and it isn't out of maliciousness that they don't have it on the floor, more like incompetence.

By the way, the item for my niece was normally $40, but it was on sale for 50% off, and magically the retail price had changed to $45 just before that 50% off sale started.

@Yellowcastle: Your points are valid, but I think the bigger issue is that when you can go to a Lego store, or online, and pickup a police station for 99 dollars, that is a 10% increase in cost at TRU.. Considering that most people in the world are trying to save any way they can this seems to be a bit extreme. Because then you are also telling people, sure but if you buy another set from TRU you will get a discount.. what about those who can still only afford one set??? Couple that with incompetent, and sometimes down right RUDE, floor people, and the talk of them hiding sets that they do not want to sell for the sale and that really smacks of bad business practice.

I know they say well they are trying to make a buck.. Well Walmart is putting their Lego SW on sale from a RETAIL price... so are they losing money? Do they have a sweeter deal with Lego for distribution?
(Nevermind that alot of times TRU is spiking their SW Lego to 20% of the retail)
I mean I have Lego store near me, and I am lucky as I got the Mandalorian battle packs (three) for 11.99. I got the Lego Bank for 49.99, AND I get the VIP points, which have no ceiling per promotional periods.. The VIP system has no limit of how many points you can accrue, how you can spend and when you can spend them.
I appreciate TRU.com and their rewards programs, but it is really annoying to have to wait until Jan 1 to save 10 dollars on something and having to spend it by 1/15 or the coupons are invalid...Id rather have the prices where they were and they can hang their 'Rewards' program to be honest because for the money you need to spend (at mostly 10% over retail) to get two sets of 5 dollar coupons which you cannot spend at once makes NO sense, because for example, oyu buy a Police station at 110, use you 10 dollars off with your 'reward' points and you pay... 99 dollars... where is the discount??
I will not even go into the minifig series 3 debacle... (which is what I do use my coupons for right now to save a 1 buck per pack)

@meyer - Raising the price just before an advertised sale does seem pretty iffy to me...
@madforlegos - I love the VIP program and hope Lego expands and improves it at some point. In regards to how TRU distributes the 10% savings, I myself am curious about that. Hopefully they won't provide them in limited $5 increments as they normally do. And I realize I'm in the minority here in regards to TRU's pricing. But I believe that, within reason, it's the prerogative of TRU to charge what they feel they can/should for the products they sell. In the end, it is really up to us as consumers to choose not to shop there if we feel the prices are unreasonable.

As long as people continue to BUY the sets for the marked-up price, TRU will continue to sell them. That's how capitalism works. They can technically price them however they want to...if you don't like it, there are LOTS of places to buy Lego from...even if you don't live near a Lego store. Lego.com has free shipping often enough that you can order specialty items from them, Walmart and Target have 50%+ of the rest of the selection covered. No one is forcing you to shop at TRU...and no one is going to investigate them for their pricing.

Got back from my local TRU. They ran out of CM3 (grrrr)(or so they say....all they did was a computer search), and didn't have the new sets you mentioned. In fact, the only 2011 sets they had were the ones released earlier.

Surprisingly, I found a Ninjago set [2259 Skeleton Chopper] but was still unable to buy it.

Really, I don't get the kind of discussions like the one above. What all the whining is about. Like natro 220 says.. that is how the system works. LEGO company is doing the same btw: price figures, even expressed in €, are for many sets higher here then what in the US has to be paid in $ ... and then you still have to multiply it by about 1,4 to have the $ equivalent.

Even the "rip-off / scam" prices mentioned here above seem like super deals to me. still at least about 30% cheaper then what we have to pay over here in Europe. Just enjoy the bargains you can get over there.
