    8043: Motorized Excavator

There are a few LEGO bargains to be had in the high street at the moment:

Argos has started its clear-out of old stock before the new catalogue is launched and the Technic Excavator is available for £99, which is £40 off. The Tantive IV is £30 off which returns it to its proper price of £99, and the Slave One is £60 instead of £80. You can check stock at your local branch at Argos.co.uk and reserve before you go! (thanks iso3200)

Tesco is apparently selling some stock at 33% off, but it seems to be somewhat random. Hob found the midi Star Destroyer for £20 and the limo/helicopter for £11.97 in one branch but not in another. If you have a large branch near you, go and check it out...

That's a great price for the Technic Excavator; I don't think it's discontinued by LEGO - there were problems when it was first released & the set was temporarily withdrawn while they worked out a fix, but it's all good now.

If you don't have the Excavator yet, then you should absolutely go out and buy it if you have been thinking about it at all. It's complexity and parts make it the best of 2010 IMHO.

I picked up 8053 for £60 in Argos, glad I hung on a bit as I had considered picking it up at full price only the week before.

I was waving my fists about when I went to castle vale in Birmingham. Smyths had no Lego sales, same story in Argos. I was hopeing for half price on 2009 sets, but no discount could be found in a mile....I came home cold, wet and angry after Argos had a Advert on TV saying "Half price on books, DVDs, toys and 100s of other items". Lets just say im only going back there for my 2011 sets. Thats another rant. I nearly had to call a Doctor when i saw the prices of most of the 2011 sets. I'll go to a discount store in 2014 and buy them then.....

Waterstones in Walthamstow, east London are selling the Dorling Kindersley Brickmaster sets for half price, so that's 9.50 each for Pirates and Atlantis.

Posted by avacadoturban in United Kingdom, 29 Dec 2010 15:55

Same in Waterstones Plymouth branch (the one at Drake's Circus) - about 60 Star Wars Brickmasters and around 30-40 of the Atlantis ones; a couple of Pirates ones too. All priced at 50% off down to £9-49, with the DK LEGO Star Wars Dictionary at £8-49. If only they had a Castle Brickmaster ...

The Technic Excavator isn't even available in Australia yet and wont be until June 2011

Posted by Thrund in United Kingdom, 30 Dec 2010 00:55

@ richselby and avacadoturban: Last time I was in Waterstones they had the Brickmaster sets reduced, but only to £12.99. I might have to take another look. I don't suppose the smaller DK books were also half price? £2.50 for a squid warrior would be a pretty good deal.

Posted by richselby in United Kingdom, 30 Dec 2010 03:47

@Thrund: I didn't spot the small books, but I did notice the DK Star Wars was also half price. Given the appalling lack of 50%-Off elsewhere, this represents the sole opportunity to get a decent discount.

Just bought the Midi Star Destroyer in Tesco (Lincoln, Wragby Road branch) for £19.78. They had a few more on the shelf so I might pop back to do some fleet building.

Also bought a Slave 1 from Argos at £59.99 (best price I've seen all Christmas). Now just a small hop to get a Tantive IV. Just wish it was properly discounted!

P.S. Firebox.com have 8089-1 Hoth Wampa Cave for £23.99 with free second class postage. I went via my favourite cashback site (Topcashback) so hope to get 12.12% cashback on my ex-VAT price too :)

I ended up going to 24 hr Tesco on the outskirts of Plymouth tonight to stock up with NYE beverages and picked up the Lego City Truck 3221 for less than £14 which was impressive. So much so, I bagged myself an Atlantis Deep Sea Striker for £9.99 too! They were sold out of Limo's tho. Glad I bought one when they first came out now...

@Pobwall: good to see another LEGO fan down here in Plymouth :) Picked up the Midi-Scale Star Destroyer for £19-98 at Tescoes Lee Mill. Off-topic, they also had some really nice Star Wars mens' t-shirts on sale (AT-AT Spec. and Stormtrooper) for all you Star Wars fans out there.

Our local ASDA in Leeds is doing the Toy Story Western Train for £40.00, bargain at 1/2 price.....

Ok, I have my excavator, it's built. How do I know if I have the new or old actuators without destroying them? Will Lego still ship a service pack? Does any have any ideas?

Posted by scholte23 in Australia, 02 Jan 2011 18:30

@stu241273 you will know if its the NEW design 8043 if this is written on the box:

"item# 4560806
barcode# 5702014601635
other # below barcode 125778"

The OLD 8043 has this written on the box:

Item: 4567590
Barcode Number: 73419 12937
Other (tiny) number below the barcode: 125778

Also once you open the box, your four Linear Actuators should have one of these codes (to indicate that they are the NEW design): 36X0, 37X0, or 38X0. Any other numbers mean that they are the OLD (pre-Service Pack), unlubricated Linear Actuators (and thus, the OLD 8043 set).
