    ...absolutely fantastic!

Thanks to Bert who found this image of a forthcoming Maersk train set, consisting of a Maersk liveried locomotive, container flats and container handling vehicle, at LEGO.com. It looks great and it's a set that people will be certain to want to buy multiples of, so that trains can be double- or triple- headed and to get more wagons. Personally I can't wait...

Update: I've been asked to remove the image, despite the fact it was found on LEGO's own server. I will leave the link to it intact, if they want it removed, they can do it themselves.

Absolutely fantastic indeed! :) Looks WONDERFUL! :) Who doesn't love Maersk blue construction hats? :) I saw it in the new additions bar! :) What do you mean by "...it's a set that people will be certain to want to buy multiples of, so that trains can be double- or triple- headed..."?

Posted by 1265 in United States, 23 Jan 2011 09:47

Wow....a stunner of a set!! I see muliples in my future.

Posted by Orange_Juice in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 09:47

You are right Huw, it is absolutely fantastic. I think I will be buying at least 2 Just for the extra rolling stock.

Posted by 3dom in Sweden, 23 Jan 2011 09:49

absolutely awesome!
don't you think that the truck looks a lil bit like Mog U400?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 23 Jan 2011 09:50

@3dom: Remember, there's going to be a Unimog U400 Technic set this Summer! :)

Posted by superbrick in United States, 23 Jan 2011 09:54

@3dom What? It doesn't look like a mog at all!
Definetly getting this set. I'm gonna take apart the two cars and use the blu for something else

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 09:55

I'm trying not to get too excited, just in case this ends up being an exclusive set for Maersk employees like the container ship initially was (although thankfully LEGO eventually made them available to all), and like the Vestas windmill still is....

I agree that it looks absolutely superb, and I can certainly see myself getting a couple of them. If we're given the opportunity of buying officially, that is, rather than being held to ransom by gleeful Maersk employees on eBay....

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 09:57

@Alemas, it's common practice in the USA to haul trains with 2 or more locomotives.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 23 Jan 2011 09:59

@Huw: O_O Two locos? One each end? Or one attached to the other?

Posted by Doctor Leg O'Brick in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 10:03

@Alemas, i was going to say the same thing myself about them hats...If i am not mistaken, is this the first minifigure scale Maersk set in a good ten+ years?

Posted by Morgan19 in United States, 23 Jan 2011 10:04

It looks nice. But given the inexplicably large price hike of the recent Maersk ship re-release and the overall price point of trains in general, I shudder to think how expensive this "perfect storm" of costliness will be.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 23 Jan 2011 10:06

@Dr. Leg: *Does quick Brickset search* Indeed: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=1831-1 The last minifig-scale Maersk set was released in 1995!

Posted by jjfan in United States, 23 Jan 2011 10:15

Love this new set! Makes me even more tempered to but the Maersk Container Ship.

"@Huw: O_O Two locos? One each end? Or one attached to the other?" Over here in the USA, the trains you always seem to see have 2 engines in the front, either facing the same way of opppsite ways. And yes some of our trains even have 1 or 2 engines at the end of each train. This is usually what you see when trains go cross-country and have a long cargo line to pull.

Posted by riot_act in United States, 23 Jan 2011 10:17

@Alemas, Usually the locos are put together. It's common to have 100-120 freight car trains with 3 or 4 locos. For example this one http://images.travelpod.com/users/nz2uk/1.1282077286.four-engine-train.jpg

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 23 Jan 2011 10:21

@jjfan and riot_act: Yeppers. 100-120 freight cars? That's MASSIVE!

Posted by Dodge in Canada, 23 Jan 2011 10:25

Is this meant to work with the 9v system? (see subtheme):
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=10219-1
Would that mean that it might come with a motor? This would be VERY exciting!

Posted by Murdoch17 in United States, 23 Jan 2011 10:25

Wow... I want the instrucitons so I can make this in black with a red base! THANK YOU LEGO! We've been needing a new 1033-styled set ( http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=10133-1 ) for a long time... seven years to be exact. I can't wait!

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 23 Jan 2011 10:30

Want.

WANT.

Oh man, I think I just passed out.

Although, honestly? One big engine, two reasonably sized carriages *plus* the truck -- I'm scared to think what the price will eventually be (particularly given that in Australia, we're currently paying twice as much as overseas Lego buyers).

Still. Holy cow. AWESOME.

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 10:30

@Dodge - I can't see this coming with a 9V motor I'm afraid. I actually don't think it'll come with a motor at all, to be honest. Motor or no motor, it will of course fit on both the old 9V and the newer tracks I'm sure.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 10:35

Yes, sorry, my mistake, it won't be 9v. But I suspect it'll be convertable to 9v.

Posted by legotrains in United States, 23 Jan 2011 10:47

Oh my gosh!!! This is awsome i hope it comes out around april when the emerald night did and i hope they do a catolog special thing so we can get the stuff we need to power it for a discount

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 23 Jan 2011 10:56

It's nice looking but not worth the price. It's a nice engine, very details with a cool truck. However the train cars are lacking. I think I'll just find the directions and make my own version.

Posted by bsquiklehausen in United States, 23 Jan 2011 10:58

Hooray! What a neat set! If you look carefully, you can see that the train has Power Functions! On the roof of the locomotive you can see the IR Reciever, and the SNOTted sides of the loco are probably to cover the 4 stud wide battery box!I can't wait for this train to come out!

Posted by skullsndogbones in United States, 23 Jan 2011 11:05

I'm not into trains myself, but this set looks great!

Posted by modena in Italy, 23 Jan 2011 11:07

That's a nice set! Maersk might soon make it's own theme if it makes any more sets! There are like 7 sets!

Posted by carding in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 11:31

Posted by Greyface in United States, 23 Jan 2011 11:38

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 23 Jan 2011 11:40

@Greyface: Maersk is a company that transports stuff all over the world. They made a few LEGO sets: http://www.brickset.com/search/?query=maersk See this: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=10155-1

Posted by BobaFett2 in United States, 23 Jan 2011 11:53

Woah....this is odd...I'm psyched, although I know I'll be ultimately disappointed when the price tag proves to be more than 150 dollars

Posted by KLF in Slovakia, 23 Jan 2011 11:57

AWESOME ! I'm wondering what the price will be?

Posted by harrypotter2010 in United States, 23 Jan 2011 12:07

Awesome! Diffently want 1 of these! Just hope it's within budget :) Yup, we live by train tracks, Union Pacific to be exact, they have 2-4 locomotives on each end all the time.

Posted by legotrains in United States, 23 Jan 2011 12:11

Oh my gosh!!! This is awsome i hope it comes out around april when the emerald night did and i hope they do a catolog special thing so we can get the stuff we need to power it for a discount

Posted by 3dom in Sweden, 23 Jan 2011 12:12

@superbrick - well, my first thought was Unimog, especially because of the release of 8110 Technic U400, there are some similarities with Mog - steep windscreen, very short and typical for U400 bonnet, on the other hand the construction of the truck looks quite similar to 1651 Maersk truck - 4 wide cab, 6 wide body

Posted by legotrains in United States, 23 Jan 2011 12:20

Hey bsquiklehause, you're right you can barely see it but I think it has studs there so I'm thinking you have to buy the stuff yourself but yes that could be a possibility. good eye : ) and also I hope the price isn't too high

Oh, god. My cousin is gonna freak over that. :)

Posted by Greyface in United States, 23 Jan 2011 12:33

This looks stupid. I was hoping for another HP special... I dislike the train theme (apart from Hogwart's Express) but that's just me.

Posted by madforLEGO in United States, 23 Jan 2011 13:09

..sigh.. yep there goes my Lego Budget for the year....My first guess is that it will be 100 dollars US.
Especially if it does not come with track or engine....So it probably should fall in line with the Emerald Night.. But I guess it will go up to 149.99 As it has the truck and three minifigs. But if it does come out at 150 then I have a feeling Lego will have a ton of these left for a clearance...

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 23 Jan 2011 13:15

THE IMAGE HAS DISAPPEARED!!! :(
EDIT: About the update: I expected it... :(

Posted by grogall in Germany, 23 Jan 2011 13:30

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 13:57

Looks like a lovely set; a *proper* train model. Very much targeted at adult collectors ... and priced to match I'll wager. I'm not really into trains, but I'll make an exception for this :-)

Posted by Tantive IV in Denmark, 23 Jan 2011 14:19

Maersk is a danish fright company, owned by the richest man i denmark Maersk M. Møller. (And yes i can do the æ, ø and å because the danish are really weird. Who add 3 letters to the alphabet for fun??) Anyway, Maersk transports goods all over the world. If you live near a port or an airport, you are most likely to see a container with the name Maersk on it. Now you know!

Oh yeah, nice set by the way.

Posted by merlinh in United States, 23 Jan 2011 14:32

If the set is in fact the "next exclusive", if the set is marketed much like the Emerald Night (special, fancier than usual) set...it sure looks like it's intended to the AFOL market (me).

I'm very hopeful Lego would not deny AFOL's the chance to buy this set. Besides, train collectors must want other 10133 style locomotives. I would buy this style locomotive no matter what the color. The black and baby blue is a fantastic bonus.

Posted by voyanui8768 in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 14:33

Quick everyone, save the image to your computers before it disappears everywhere!

Posted by mysterygoo in United States, 23 Jan 2011 14:42

Here in Colorado BNSF uses 4 engines on the coal trains, they don't come over the mountain passes. But Union Pacific uses 6 engines because they come over the Rocky Mountains with their coal trains. As for the maersk train, put me down for 5 atleast

Posted by Firox 5000 in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 16:31

Looks amazing , I probably wont be able to get it as Iam short on space and money so will probably have to live with the cargo train from 2010. I reckon the train will cost £132.99 and $149.99 probably.

Posted by djkilof in Poland, 23 Jan 2011 16:32

WOW. I want that!

Posted by eMouse in United States, 23 Jan 2011 16:49

@Alemas: Here's video of a 4-engine line. Takes two and a half minutes for the full train to go through at a decent speed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX2N77yicS8

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 23 Jan 2011 17:01

@1265: The Maersk loco looks like a recoloured Santa Fe... :|
@eMouse: O_O

Posted by legomaniac in United States, 23 Jan 2011 17:54

Santa Fe, maersk etc... trains are the same North American EMD engine.
Looks great, though I have no room for a train :(

Posted by Brickmeister1138 in United States, 23 Jan 2011 18:17

It looks like Lego is attempting to make an EMD SD40-2, one of the most popular locomotives in the U.S., though the set loco has 2 wheel trucks instead of 3 wheel trucks.

Also, it is common practice to place a pair of locos at the end of a train as it goes over mountain routes near where I live.

If you are a train purist, you may need to get up o six of this set, which would give a nice intermodal consist, 4 locos for the head, and a pair of helpers for the rear. Though if you are a train purist, you would also have to modify all of the trucks on the locos to make them 3 wheel type.

I am definately interested in this set as a train/Lego/HO scale model railroading enthusiast.

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 18:27

As we've seen with the Emerald Night, I bet we'll see a lot of custom versions of this set from fans after it's released. Maersk holds a special place in the hearts of many older LEGO collectors and fans, and I think this set is going to be a big seller :-)

Posted by thisisandyok in United States, 23 Jan 2011 18:30

I am so going to buy this

Posted by Acadia in United States, 23 Jan 2011 19:11

Posted by tontonsega in France, 23 Jan 2011 19:28

Posted by Murdoch17 in United States, 23 Jan 2011 19:34

@ bluemoose: I plan on making a black diesel with red base on Lego Digital Designer once the instructions become public. However: I want to order it eventually, so I will be restricted to the Design By me pallet. Hopefully it will work out. By the way, does anyone even want to guess how long the engine is? My guess is a 28 studs long base, with extensions of 2 studs on each end. But then again: it looks longer than the freight cars, which are 34 studs long. Mabye a new, longer train baseplate?

Posted by AETerry in United States, 23 Jan 2011 19:38

It looks like a sweet train and will eagerly await an official release from LEGO.

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 23 Jan 2011 19:41

Well remember how the BNSF engine (and the Santa Fe carriages, IIRC) was on a 28 stud baseplate, but they added 6x2 plates on either side to make the base longer?

They've probably done the same thing here, I would guess.

Posted by Captain Blockbeard in United States, 23 Jan 2011 20:09

I haven't bought a Lego train in many years, but I think I may have just found a reason to purchase one again. Of course, that's assuming this set isn't $150+. Even with so many great sets priced $150+, I haven't been able to push myself to buy one in that range.

Posted by legobob in United States, 23 Jan 2011 20:16

I find this ironic. I was complaining to myself about how long it's been since a ''real'' locomotive has been produced and if one were to be released about not hesitating to purchase multiples, and then WHAM! Here one is. My wallet is already cringing.

Posted by IlovePowerMiners in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 22:05

@ Brickmeister That looks like a 3329, which actually has 2 wheeled trucks.

Posted by brankell5566 in Canada, 23 Jan 2011 22:12

My birthday is in August, this would be a great gift for me! ;)

Posted by IlovePowerMiners in United Kingdom, 23 Jan 2011 22:19

Oops, the 3329 actually does have 3 wheeled trucks.

Posted by Brickmeister1138 in United States, 23 Jan 2011 22:37

The reason I believe it is based on an SD40-2 (6 axled locomotve with 3 axles per truck) is because a Norfolk Southern SD40-2 (3329) was one of the 3 locomotives painted into this promotional sceme along with a Santa Fe ex. Amtrak SDF40-2 and a Santa Fe GP60M.

My guess is Lego made it 4 axeled becasue the train motor cannot accept a 3rd axle. Otherwise it seems to be pretty accurate. I still would love to see the NS logo on the Loco though...

Posted by suckerpunch83 in Canada, 23 Jan 2011 23:47

Well this has definately jumped to the top of my wanted list. I already told the wife this evening that my Lego buying has been put on hold until this comes out - aside from Series 4 Minifigs, of course.....;)

I am not really that big into the train scene, but love vehicles and that truck is a must have. The last train theme I bought was this: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=10170-1

Hopefully the price wont be higher than $130 either. I guess we'll have to wait and see on that, however.

Posted by richselby in United Kingdom, 24 Jan 2011 09:00

Ironic isn't it? The CEO of The Lego Group asks fans not to publish pics of pre-release sets pinched from elsewhere, whilst at the same time then they go and upload some to their own public web server. And instead of taking down the image when they realise their mistake, they ask other websites not to link to it. You couldn't make this up.
Memo to TLG top brass: please read up on web based marketing techniques. You have much to gain and little to lose.

Posted by bzbox in Slovenia, 24 Jan 2011 09:44

I think it's not fair LEGO doesn't make 9V exclusive train sets. I mean, at least there could be both versions for the same price. Afterall, this set is collectable.

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 24 Jan 2011 09:52

I hate Lego's copetitors, why not just have them all meet and make one big group called Lego Bloks. We get Lego's great quality and Mega Bloks cheap prices! Anyway, this set have an awesome color scheme and looks really great, but I won't be surprised when the price is $99.99; sadly. :(

Brickset is certainly a powerful Lego media partner now. We've been told that the reason for keeping it under wraps was because it was meant to be officially unveiled at an AFOL event in the near future; so LEGO are officially unhappy (with themselves) that it's been released early ... suggestions that it was a 'marketing leak' don't really add up.

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 24 Jan 2011 18:00

@Gowinkle - If that ship was minifigure scale I would have it built and waiting for that train. I wish that TLG would make a new, minifigure scale ship to go with the train.

Anyone who has the ship: A, is it worth it? and B, can you put minifigs in/on it? How out of scale is it?

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 24 Jan 2011 19:27

If the company has an internal leak (which it would seem to do), shouldn't that be just as much a concern to them as fans posting the picture? You'd think they would've taken the photo down straight away.

Posted by Duq in Ireland, 25 Jan 2011 09:30

They don't seem to learn from their mistakes, do they? How many times have we found out about new sets from Lego uploading images too early?
The engine looks good, as does the tractor. The container cars however look pretty bland. At least there's two of them. Maybe all that moaning about the Emerald Night with its single car has had some effect after all?

@ Duq: You know, container cars are quite bland in reality. I think lego did a pretty good job with them myself (especially considering how thin they are in reality), though I do not see why they are not articulated cars like they often are in reality. See Below for a pic:

I cannot wait for this! I'm going to use it with my custom Union Pacific Engine (An Alco Century 855), and my TTX Intermodal Cars to make a double headed train.

@Duq. I agree with you on the Container Cars being bland. But they are the first container cars LEGO has done since 2005.

@legocoastguard - The Maersk ship is not necessarily worth the price (about 25% too high). It is not minifig scale but if you like midi scale realistic sets it's not too bad. It actually is about the scale of the Tower Bridge set (a little bigger), but the two together look great!. You need two cargo ships combined to make a decent minifig scale ship though 250 bucks for a cargo ship is pushing it. Also, you'll be shocked by the size of the box, about the size of a shoe box, the Train is easily $159 in my opinion.
