55000: LEGO Universe Massively Multiplayer Online Game
    Gear/Video Games/PC, 2010

Our focus here at Brickset.com is on brick sets, not all the other ancillary products that LEGO make, and our news section reflects that. Occasionally, there are non-brick news stories that are worth covering ...

Back before Christmas, LEGO slashed the purchase price of the LEGO Universe game to 50% of the original price, and last week LEGO halved the price again - it's now only $9.99 US / 9.99 Euros / £7.49 UK / etc. in the the areas that it is available, a full 75% off the original purchase price. Remember this includes the subscription for the first month's worth of 'game time' ... also note this is the same price as the ongoing monthly subscription rate, so effectively you're getting the game for free when you pay for your first month's subscription. If you've been wondering about the game, now seems like a great opportunity to jump on-board and give it a go!

I'm not sure what this means for the game in the long-term; it appears that the take-up of the game has been less than expected, and LEGO are prepared to do what they feel it's going to take to get people playing the game and paying their monthly subscriptions ... personally I like the game, but I just don't have the spare time to devote to it. I also don't think it's the purchase price that is the problem, but rather the monthly subscription ...

Meanwhile, 'Minecraft' is going from strength-to-strength.

Well I might considered geting lego universe now

If they went F2P and dropped the subscription fee, I'd be all over it. Otherwise the only way I'd still spend money on this is if the exclusive orange figure still came with the purchase-- and even then I'd still cancel before the subscription kicked in.

I bough it when price was $19.90 played for few days. Even bough a lego universe book. But this game is to complicated, not very well design, so won't extend paid subscription.

I think the game is good, but I have to agree with martiger. The game play is very complicated. Lego had to sell a bunch of these units just to break even. I think I heard something around the 500K mark. If it was the 500K that was assuming the full price. Now that they are lowering the price I would have to say that they have to sell a lot more and when the next game comes around for little ones parents will drop the game.

The game just got a LOT better with the launch of Crux Prime and spinjitsu. My boys and I have been playing since Alpha test and the main problem with the game was just the lack of content for the price. A lower monthly price would make it a lot easier sell.

MMO-type games are currently at their weak point as it seems. FPS games tend to rule the market over other genres for the most part at the moment.

Minecraft ftw

Minecraft is going to beat lego universe so bad. Its already sold a million copies. And it has no monthly fees. Hmm.
Hint hint.

Now lego realise no-one is willing to pay £30 for a game to try it out.
At £7 now it sounds like i might purchase a copy to see if its good or not.
At the original price the game was a rip off and barely anyone could afford to buy it!
Oh and I have a feeling LEGO feel that just because they printed the LEGO logo on the box they must charge a fortune to play it. whilst you can get a good recently released PS3/Xbox game for £30 and you can actually play the game forever unlike 1 month you originally got for LU.
Probably Runescape is better than LU and the subscription for that is only £3 and is much more developed i can tell you that.

To be honest, I'm not surprised. When I first heard the game was going to be sold for $40.00 I stood for about an hour with my mouth open, surprised that lego would make the game that expensive, and on top of that have a monthly subscription. It's not that I have anything against the game, in fact I probably would have bought it for the half-price if it wasn't for the fact that I am already involved in another online game and don't have the time nor money at the moment to commit to another. Also I don't have possession of a good computer capable of running it, but hey, I know someone who does, and I may just buy it now that they have slashed the price again.

Wow . . . Just wow. And us pre-orderers are now stuck with a $40 dollar game disk, and only a minifig suit in-game, and in real life to show for it . . .

I think LEGO might as well just sell the game online, and do away with the disks all together. Having the game cards in the store should be enough to get people interested.

I really think they would get a lot more players, and a lot more profit, if they would lower the game price down to $5.

If LEGO wanted to sell a lot of copies fast, they should have done it as a direct to drive type game and came in at a low price point in the first place, which is what many successful games do/are starting to do. They should have probably also implemented a play for free system that would limit what you could do and pay monthly for more features. This would have sold many copies fast and would probably made the game that much more attractive to more people.

LEGO Minecraft maybe? :P

I don't see why everyone's hating on LU here, I don't see how the gameplay is complicated, I get along fine with it, and why is everyone complaining that it has a subscription fee? WoW has a subscription fee, and it does just fine.

You think they should sell it for 5 dollars? Really? That would be completely stupid, lowering it to ten is starting to be ridiculous.

Also, you can't compare a game to another if you haven't actually played it yourself, and the game has plenty of content and stuff to do, I'm still not even close to completing all the content.

And I thought 50 dollars CAD was a fair price once I got the game (I got it at half-price) especially now that there's crux Prime and a LOT of the glitches have been fixed, I haven't run into any frustrating glitches since the patch.

Okay, rant over.

Once again, the Australian/New Zealand market seems to have been left out by the the LEGO Group. Minecraft, on the other hand, is available in *all* markets!

If LEGO is serious about LEGO Universe, they need to improve the availability of the game in all markets, and obtain dedicated server space for LU in each of those markets to make it viable for the players (read: "Paying customers/income stream") in those places. Having played LU in Beta (at ridiculous times of the day due to time zone differences), I am sure that LU is a game that could compete serously with many other MMOGs out there.
